• How do I perform an action if the upstart respawn limit is hit?

  I have an upstart job: description "foreman" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [06] respawn respawn limit 3 60 chdir /home/deploy/app/current env RAILS_ENV=production exec sudo -u deploy bundle exec foreman start We ran into a case where a rogue character in an app file caused one of the background workers to fail but the app ran normally (weird). The app worked fine, but the workers were never working. I'd like upstart to do something (send an email) if it can't start this job, since it's not entirely obvious if everything went alright. Is there something built into upstart to handle this, or do I have to get creative?

  Hi, As a computer technician I have to reinstall systems allmost daily (when it can't be repaired ;-)) My problem is that I recover user files by hand and a external mounting device. Most of the time it works fine, but also weekly I have systems with passwords and personal files which are often not sucessfull recovered. I know you can change owner, but when people have 30 GB's af data, my backup computer works for ages to change the rights. Can anyone think of software (commercial is no problem) which does the following: * backup user data without having user rights troubles * have a option to choose what to backup (email accounts, documents, etc, etc) even when it's externaly mounted, in short, it reconizes the folder structure) * Works on different OS's like XP, Vista, W7

• Installing Collective Access

  I am VERY new to installing any type of server program and to running any opensource type software in general. I am running Windows Server 2008R2. I want to install Collective Access to run locally only on my Intranet at home. So my host is localhost I sucessfully installed PHP and MYSQL. I installed CA in this directory C:/inetpub/wwwroot/collectiveaccess. 1st. I do not want to send mail through collective access. Will it install without all the email information? Can I comment those requirements out in the global config and setup.php file? 2nd I am getting the error. • Computer prints blank pages before and after content

  This would seem like a pretty simple question but I have exhausted every idea I can come up with. I bought a brand new Dell Latitude E5410 not too long ago with Windows 7 OS. I installed office 2010 on the machine right away and have had a printing problem since day one. For some reason every time I print a page, a blank page prints out before and after the content print. This also applies to any other application such as notepad or printing an email. If I have a 6 page document, it still prints out one page before and after every content page. Meaning I get my 6 page document along with 12 blank pages. I can't figure out why this would be some sort of default setting or what would cause this printing configuration. I am the only computer on the network that has this problem and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. Can anyone help me figure this out or steer me in the right direction to correcting this problem?

• Exchange enrypted messages with a single recipient [portable]

  I need to exchange encrypted messages with another party. These would be in the form of email like communication (not instant chat). The solution needs to be portable (USB stick). I've tried "Portable Thunderbird/Enigmail/Gnupg/Hotmail account" but it's just impossible to setup portable, countless meaningless error messages. Anyway, I would prefer something more straightforward. Notes: We won't know each others IP addresses. Our computers will often be switched off. Encryption would ideally be using a common password. Is there a solution to this?

• AD account locks out when using Outlook 2007?

  Hi, I/we have a problem with our Windows Server 2008 forest and Exchange. We are buying Exchange hosting from another firm and Exchange Server is in their Windows Server 2008 forest. So, we have two forests and there isn't any trusts between these two forests. Our own forest logon name is [email protected] and we also use the same email address to logon to the Exchange mailbox. Everything works fine if both our AD account and Exchange mailbox account have the same password, but if the passwords don't match, our AD account gets locked out. I have tried to figure out why Outlook sends false logon attemps to our AD. If someone can help, please do.

• Need help identiying a nasty rootkit in Windows

  I have a nasty rootkit that not tools seem to be able to idenity. I know for sure it's a rootkit, but I can figure out which rootkit it is. Here's what I gathered so far: It creates multiple copies of itself in %HOME%\Local Settings\Temp with names like Q.EXE, IAJARZ.exe, etc., and install them as hidden services. These EXE have SysInternals identifiers in them so they're definitely rootkits. It hooked very deep in the system, including file read/write, security policies, registry read/write, and possibly WinSock/TCP/IP. When going to Sophos.com to download their software, the rootkit inject something called Microsoft Ajax Tootkit into the page, which injects code into the email submission form in order to redirect it. (EDIT: I might have panicked. Looks like Sophos does use an AJAZ email form, their form is just broken on Chrome so it looked like a mail form injection attack, the link is http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool/download.aspx ) Super-Antispyware found a lot of spyware cookies, in the name of .kaspersky.2o7.net, etc. (just chedk 2o7.net, looks like it's a legit ad company) I tried comparing DNS lookup from the infected systems and from system in other physical locations, no DNS redirections it seems. I used dd to copy the MBR and compared it with the MBR provided by ms-sys package, no differences so it's not infecting MBR. No antivirus or rootkit scanner be able to identify it. Most of them can't even find it. I tried scanning, in-situ (normal mode), in safe mode, and boot to linux live CD. Scanners used: Avast, Sophos anti rootkit, Kasersky TDSSKiller, GMER, RootkitRevealer, and many others. Kaspersky reported some unsigned system files that ought to be signed (e.g. tcpip.sys), and reported a number of MD5 mismatches. But otherwise couldn't identify anything based on signature. When running Sysinternal RootkitRevealer and Sophos AntiRootkit, CPU usage goes up to 100% and gets stucked. The Rootkit is blocking them. When trying running/installing HiJackThis, RootkitRevealer and some other scanners, it tells me system security policy prevent running/installing it. The list of malicious acitivities go on and on. here's a sample of logs from all my scans. In particular, aswSnx.SYS, apnenfno.sys and PROCMON20.SYS has a huge number of hooks. It's hard to tell if the rootkit replaced legit program files like aswSnx.SYS (from Avast) and PROCMON20.SYS (from Sysinternal Process Monitor). I can't find whether apnenfno.sys is from a legit program. Help to identify it is appreciated. • Exchange Public Folders in Snow Leopard Mail.app

  I am using Mail.app (running snow leopard) to connect to my email account on my school's Exchange 2007 server. I get my Inbox just fine, and iCal connects to my Outlook Calendar just fine, but I cannot seem to get any of the Exchange Public Folders that I can automatically see when I am using Outlook on a Windows box. The Account Type is shown as "Exchange 2007" I did not have any luck Googling this problem, in fact most of the results I saw were dealing with the opposite problem: Remove MS Exchange Public Folders I am aware that my question is a duplicate of this: http://superuser.com/questions/103115/apple-mail-app-all-exchange-folders-not-visible but since that question did not get any responses, I am reposting.

• Server 2003 RAS Server Utilising High WAN Traffic

  We have Routing and Remote Access configured on Server 2003 (also our primary domain controller), allowing users to connect in remotely to access files, email, etc. With one user, the RAS Server is constantly sending data to that user's remote computer. From 9am this morning it has transferred almost 800MB. The user isn't transferring any files remotely, certainly not enough to total 800MB anyway. None of the other remote users have had this issue. We have ensured that the user in question has "Use default gateway on remote network" disabled for both IPv4 and IPv6 and we are fairly confident that Offline Files isn't trying to synchronise with the server remotely, too. My question is two-fold. Firstly, has anyone had a similar experience? Secondly, what would be the best software to discover exactly what data is being sent to the remote user?

  I am about to get a ton of business cards printed from my new corporation, and I am allowed to have a QR code on it, and I would really like to be able to add a photo to be attached to the vcard. • Questions about Domains and DNS

  Hi, I am totally new to the DNS and server hosting world and not quite sure what I need. I want to get a domain, forward it to my own server, so that the user sees example.com in the url bar and example.com/foo/bar will work. Depending on what subdomain it is, it should do different things (another base-directory at webserver, ftp, etc). Also my email should be able to be sent to and received by that server. What irritates me, is the fact, that in the A-record I can only list IP-addresses and no ports. So do I have to set up a nameserver on my own server? Or do I accomplish this via vhosts on my webserver? I would appreciate any help or link to a tutorial. I know how DNS works, know some basic apache-stuff, etc... so no need to explain that. Thanks

• Thunderbird-3 keeps on downloading already downloaded messages again?

  I am using Thunderbird for my gmail account, with IMAP settings. All my folders are synchronized. A very strange behavior, after all my mails are downloaded, TB3 starts downloading email again. At times saying "downloading x out of y messages" where x y (like now downloading 19 out of 11 messages). Had the same problem in TB3 for windows so, replaced TB with Outlook-07, issue resolved. But on linux, I dont like the evolution's interface, so i have no choice but to stick to TB. Any suggestions how to TB not eat my bandwidth.

  I am on a Windows 7 box, and I have tortoisesvn on my machine. After getting a little familiar with svn and tortoisesvn on a code repository, I set up a local repository to manage revisions of some word and powerpoint documents. I want to figure out some scripted way to output a set of files with the build/revision number embedded in the filename. I will then email the files to some business people to review. For example, say I have a group of files in my working directory: PresentA.pptx PresentA-notes.docx PresentB.pptx and TortoiseSVN repo browser tells me that I am currently at revision 21 for PresentA.pptx and PresentA-notes.docx but at revision 25 for PresentB.pptx, I would like some way to get 3 files with the following names: PresentA-r21.pptx PresentA-notes-r21.docx PresentB-r25.pptx Alternatively, if revision 25 is the current value for the repository, having all the names appended with -r25 would work, too.

I sell this ebook DRM free and take what I consider a friendlier/less obtrusive approach of using a service to "stamp" the customer's name and email address onto each page of the ebook as a way to discourage piracy. I would like to take this same approach for selling the ebook in ePub and/or Kindle formats. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any stamping services for ePub or Kindle. Is DRM my only anti-piracy option when using ePub and Kindle? For a reference point, ebookstamper.com stamps ebooks in PDF format. No, they don't do anything other than PDF.

• What tools can be used to monitor a web application? Beyond "doesn't 404"

  I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?

  About three days ago, I noticed the exim mailqueue started filling up on one of my servers, and upon inspecting some of the emails using # exim -Mvb $ID, I noticed they were being sent to some system email address (which is not a real address), and the body of the messages were as follows: (process:8259): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text() I'm wondering what could be causing this strange issue, as I've never heard of 'pango' at all... I've never seen that function used in my lifetime! It seems the process id (PID) is for an apache process, though, as the pids are always gone by the time I use # ps -aux to look them up. • How do I reassemble a zip file that has been emailed in multiple parts?

  I received 3 emails each containing part of a zip file. The extensions end in .z00, .z01 and .z02. (Emailed as such to get around the typical 10Mb attachment limit per email.) I have put all 3 files into one directory. I can use both 7-zip and WinZip to open the first file (the .z00 file) and it lists the contents of the zip but when trying to extract the files both programs are reporting errors. What is the least error prone way of reassembling this zip and getting to the files?

• Postfix configuration: different outgoing hosts based on sender

  I've seen a few answers to this on the web, but nothing definitive nor any good examples. I relay all my mail out through Postfix, currently everything sent to my ISP's mail server. However, there are a few users with gmail accounts or gmail-hosted accounts; I'd like to route their outgoing mail through Google's servers (since it will then appear in their Gmail sent folder). All email NOT from one of these senders should go out through the default relayhost. I believe I need to use the "sender_dependent_default_transport_maps" configuration within Postfix, but can't find a good example on what this setup looks like. Can anyone point me at a specific setup?

• Plesk 9.2.1 reporting much more SMTP traffic than the logs indicate

  Plesk is reporting nearly 7GB of SMTP traffic so far this month on one domain, most of it outgoing. However, after running qmail's mail logs (which only go back to May 8) through Sawmill, only about 900MB of traffic on that domain is accounted for. What I know so far: Email sent via PHP's mail() function is sent through sendmail, which has been logging its output via syslog to the same logs that qmail uses, at /usr/local/psa/var/log/ Messages sent by logging in directly via Telnet are logged as well I verified that Plesk is reporting totals correctly by creating a new domain, sending some large emails through it, running Plesk's statistics calculation script, and comparing its reported totals to the actual size of the emails sent The problem domain did have three mail accounts with blank or insecure passwords, which I corrected Does anyone know how Plesk calculates SMTP traffic statistics? Are there some log files elsewhere that I'm missing? What kind of SMTP traffic would Plesk know about that isn't being logged?

You can also sync your mail, and calendar from Hotmail or Gmail. It all works just great. Now my problem is that I have different profiles. I have my personal profile, and on the other side I have work profile. My work email is on Gmail Apps, so I have a mail and calendar there also. I also have a personal facebook account, and one I use for work. So my question is if there is a way of switching between these profiles quickly.

  Is this some new "feature" for thunderbird 8? When I start thunderbird it starts by opening thunderbird. Once it is loading thunderbird it loads another 6 thunderbirds. What happened to the one window? When I minimize to tray I got 4 of thunderbird icons. When closing one of them all of the close. My other windows 7(32 bit not 64 bit) only have one instance.

  I have an Ubuntu raring server running postfix/dovecot as an email server, with tumgreyspf doing greylisting and SPF checks. My problem is that I also have a backup MX server, that is supposed to store my emails temporarily, should my main server ever fails. It usually rejects receiving emails if it finds the main server online and functional.
