• Switching Workspace in Xubuntu Oneiric is slow, how to improve it?

  The processor is a single core AMD Sempron 1.6 GHz. While it is a few years old, workspace switching under Ubuntu Lucid / Gnome to ANY workspace was always instant, even when a lot of apps were open. Under Xubuntu Oneiric, switching to an empty workspace is instant, but switching to a workspace with 5 open applications takes 8 to 9 seconds. Compiz is not installed. Since XFCE is said to be more light weight than Gnome, switching should be instant too, isn't it ? How can this be improved ?

Edit : The Solution : Upgrade kernel and then update all graphic card drivers.Now there is no problem .

• Are there any resources for motion-planning puzzle design?

  Some background: I'm poking at a set of puzzles along the lines of Rush Hour/Sokoban/etc; for want of a better description, call them 'motion planning' puzzles - the player has to figure out the correct sequence of moves to achieve a particular configuration. (It's the sort of puzzle that's generically PSPACE-complete if that actually helps anyone's mental image). While I have a few straightforward 'building blocks' that I can use for puzzle crafting and I have a few basic examples put together, I'm trying to figure out how to avoid too much sameness over a large swath of these kinds of puzzles, and I'm also trying to figure out how to make puzzles that have more of a feel of logical solution than trial-and-error. Does anyone know of good resources out there for designing instances of this sort of puzzle once the core puzzle rules are in place? Most of what I've found on puzzle design only covers creating the puzzle rules, not building interesting puzzles out of a set of rules.

  I found a ton of formulae and what not, but 3D isn't my forte so I'm at a loss of what specifically to use. My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).   I was trying to see the effect of time slicing. And how it can consume significant amount of time. Actually, I was trying to divide a certain work into number of threads and see the effect. I have a two core processor. So two threads can run in parallel. I was trying to see if I have a work w that is done by 2 threads, and if I have the same work done by t threads with each thread doing w/t of the work. How much does time slicing play a role in it As time slicing is time consuming process, I was expecting that when I do the same work using a two thread process or by a t thread process, the amount of time taken by the t thread process will be more Any suggestions?

I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW.   I am trying to use Nvidia Optimus on my laptop by using Bumblebee, I have an Intel Core i5 with an Nvidia Geforce GT 630M. I have followed the instructions on the wiki page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee, but when trying to run optirun with Firefox (or any other program, like glxspheres), I get the following error: [ 1921.452820] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not load GPU driver [ 1921.452905] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled. • Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade succeeded partially - I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that?

  When I wanted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 the update manager told me that there was an unresolvable problem with calculating the upgrade. In order to see more details I performed the following on the command line: apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core do-release-upgrade Now do-release-upgrade tells me that no newer version is available but the "about" box in the main menu tells me I am still on 13.10. I think the latter is right, as for instance in the "system settings" there is no way to select local menus, which is present in 14.04 (I tried with a DVD, and there it is). Maybe the problem is related to the fact that "apt-get update" cannot get two resources called "saucy/InRelease" and "saucy/main/binary-i386/Packages" from the mirror (mirror.informatik.uni-mannheim.de; 404 not found). I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that? Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

  I installed WorldOfGooSetup.1.41.deb and it didn't work. There was a segmentation fault error (core dumped) in terminal. I fixed that with: sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvorbis.so.* /opt/WorldOfGoo/libs32 sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvorbis.so.* /opt/WorldOfGoo/libs64 That error is new for me as I have never had it before with previous releases of Ubuntu. The game starts now but no sound effects or music is played. I can hear music with my computer, videos, etc, so it is not a volume control problem. I am using ubuntu 12.04 final release.

• Shutdown after waking up

  This issue appeard after installing last week's updates from Update Manager. When waking up after suspend, the OS starts loading and it halts unexpectedly, before the load is complete. I don't get to see login screen. This worked well last week, before installing updates. Then I need to remove laptop's battery, wait a while, then plug it and start again (otherwise power button won't work). Is anybody else experiencing this behavior? I have an HP DV7 with an intel core i7.

• 12.04 install now just blank screen

  I have attempted to install a new copy of 12.04 using usb stick instead of using download manager. Everything went fine while using usb stick until I restarted after installation was complete. Then, I got the screen with cursor and 4 lines of script with the first line saying "could not write to bytes: broken pipes". I have used several versions of Ubuntu from 6.04, but this one seems broken. I have tried nouveau.blacklist and many other suggestions to no luck. I am using hp pavilion m7790y dual core processor system, with nvidia 7600gt video card, 4gb ram and two hard drives with Vista on one and fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on other. I'm still looking for help to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

  After I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 my rhythmbox wouldn't work. After many failed attempts I ended up uninstalling and removing all traces of rhythmbox I could find. Now I've reinstalled rhythmbox, and am getting the error rhythmbox: error while loading shared libraries: librhythmbox-core.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've tried sudo apt-get install librhythmbox* Only to get Reading package lists... • Drives will not show up on PCI RAID card in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Computer specs Intel E8200 Dual Core MSI G45M MB Ultra U12-40739 PCI Expansion Card - 2 SATA Internal Ports, 1.5Gbps, RAID 0, 1, JBOD 6 GB DDR2 Q1. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Amahi, for using Grey Hole, last night. The two disc on the raid card do not show up under Ubuntu 12.04LTS but they do show up under grey hole so I know the drives and the raid card are working and there. I need to access them in Ubuntu to format them and place folders on them but I can not see them or figure out how to access them. Q2. Only 4 of the six drives connected to the MB are showing in Ubuntu, but they show as active in grey hole. I also need to access these drives in Ubuntu as this is my storage server. I am new to LINUX so any help you can provide with simple directions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you Mechh69

Now i have 1580 packages to update and do not update. Partial system upgrade also fails in the first step. What next? Alternatively, to undo the changes? Thank's to help.

  I have been trying to install ubuntu along windows but failed. the issue is that I get a graphical glitch with the colours of the ubuntu loading screen while installing from usb and no progress is made, the pc freezes. I've tryied the nomodeset solution, but when I have to reboot I get the same problem.
