• Drawbacks to using background-repeat only for colors?

  So I need some custom colors on a layout, but I'm looking for a better way of doing it other than just slapping a giant picture with (background: url(something.jpg)) in the layout. Mostly I'm thinking of getting a color palette (i.e. from Adobe Kuler, colourlovers, etc.), getting a 5x5 sample of each color and sticking them in an array for CSS sprites or just as separate files and accessing them through: .color-one {transparent url(./one.gif) repeat} and just reusing that whenever I'd like to use the color. Are there any drawbacks to doing it this way? And if there are should I just stick with web-safe colors or is there a better way of doing this?

In SICP's exercise there is many tasks where students should create abstract functions with many parameters, like (define (filtered-accumulate combiner null-value term a next b filter)...) in exercise 3.11. In Java (language with safe, static typing discipline) - method with more than 4 arguments usually smells, but in Lisp/Scheme it doesnt, does it? I'm wandering how many arguments do you use in you functions? If you use it in production, do you make such many layers?

  Hello, I have a com interop c++ dll that is loaded in c++ throught the .tlb file generated in c#. When I run in my computer it works fine but when I run in a computer that just got formated it gives: WindowsError: exception code 0xe0434f4d Do I have to do something for the .tlb file or its dll to be registered in the system? Something regarding regasm.exe? If so, it is possible to only download regasm.exe and use it? Thanks in advance!

• Problems using FluentNHibernate + SQLite with .NET4?

  I have a WPF application running with VS2010 .Net3.5 using Nhibernate with FluentNHibernate + SQLite, and all works fine. Now I want to change to use .Net4, but this has turned into a more painful experience then I expected.. When setting up the connection a FluentConfigurationException is thrown from FluentConfiguration.BuildConfiguration saying: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more details. The inner exception gives us more information: Could not create the driver from NHibernate.Driver.SQLite20Driver, NHibernate, Version=2.1.2.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4. It has an InnerException again: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Which again has an InnerException: The IDbCommand and IDbConnection implementation in the assembly System.Data.SQLite could not be found. Ensure that the assembly System.Data.SQLite is located in the application directory or in the Global Assembly Cache. If the assembly is in the GAC, use element in the application configuration file to specify the full name of the assembly. Now - to me it sounds like it doesn't find System.Data.SQLite.dll, but I can't understand this. Everywhere this is referenced I have "Copy Local", and I have verified that it is in every build folder for projects using SQLite. I have also copied it manually to every Debug folder of the solution - without luck. Notes: This is exactly the same code that worked just fine before I upgraded to .Net4. I did see some x64 x86 mismatch problems earlier, but I have switched to use x86 as the target platform and for all referenced dlls. I have verified that all files in the Debug-folder are x86. I have tried the precompiled Fluent dlls, I have tried compiling myself, and I have compiled my own version of Fluent using .Net4. I see that there are also others that have seen this problem, but I haven't really seen any solution yet. After @devio's answer I tried adding a reference to the SQLite dll. This didn't change anything, but I hope I made it right though.. • int vs size_t on 64bit

  Porting code from 32bit to 64bit. Lots of places with int len = strlen(pstr); These all generate warnings now because strlen() returns size_t which is 64bit and int is still 32bit. So I've been replacing them with size_t len = strlen(pstr); But I just realized that this is not safe, as size_t is unsigned and it can be treated as signed by the code (I actually ran into one case where it caused a problem, thank you, unit tests!). Blindly casting strlen return to (int) feels dirty. Or maybe it shouldn't? So the question is: is there an elegant solution for this? I probably have a thousand lines of code like that in the codebase; I can't manually check each one of them and the test coverage is currently somewhere between 0.01 and 0.001%.

For commands it works fine, they are enabling or disabling correctly. But when i try to disable view and open perspective, that contains that view (myproject.view.input), it opened without that view, but also throws exception: !STACK 1 org.eclipse.ui.PartInitException: Could not create view: myproject.view.input at org.eclipse.ui.internal.ViewFactory.createView(ViewFactory.java:158) I can show full stacktrace if anyone want. I tried to debug my application and before i open my perspective whith that view, i checked currentState of my CommandState source provider, and all seemes to be ok: all variables values are correct and myproject.view.input.active = DISABLED Can anyone say, why exception is thrown? This way the user sees the fancy styled text while search engines can still index it. However I am started to think this sounds like cloaking since I am serving different content to the user vs the spider. However, I am not using this in a deceitful way.   When attempting to use HttpWebRequest to retrieve a page from my dev server, I get a web exception: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel." The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure... The url I'm attempting to read from is a plain-old http://myserver.com/mypage.asp - no SSL. The production server has a valid certificate so this shouldn't be an issue, but our dev server doesn't. Help!

  I'm using require_once() in header.php to include the FirePHP library. In the page.php I'm doing the usual... $firephp = FirePHP::getInstance(true); $firephp->log($categories); Getting these errors.. 'Headers already sent....' and Cannot send log data to FirePHP. You must have Output Buffering enabled via ob_start() or output_buffering ini directive... I figured the using require_once in the template's header.php (above all HTML output) would be safe (pre header output). Guess this is not the case. Anyone have experience with this? (P.S. I tried the WP FirePHP plugin, wasn't working right)

  Hello, I am maintaining other's code and its using the class UdpClient. The code declares one instance of UdpClient and receives data continuosly using the UdpClient.Receive(). When data is received it is processed in another thread and the UdpClient calls Receive() again. At the same time when the data is processed the same client is sending a response back. Question: Is this a bug? I think so because UdpClient is not thread safe so you can not call two methods at the same time. Anyways code is working fine but ...

  I currently have a hierarchy of items based off of QGraphicsItem. I want to move to QGraphicsObject instead so that I can put properties on my items. I will not be making use of signals/slots or any other features of QObject. I'm told that you shouldn't derive from QObject because it's "heavy" and "slow". To test the impact, I derive from QGraphicsObject, add a couple properties to my items, and look at the memory usage of the running app. I create 1000 items using both flavors and I don't notice anything more than 10k more memory usage. Since all I am adding on to my items are properties, is it safe to say that QObject only adds weight if you are using signals/slots?

• BindException/Too many file open while using HttpClient under load

  I have got 1000 dedicated Java threads where each thread polls a corresponding url every one second. public class Poller { public static Node poll(Node node) { GetMethod method = null; try { HttpClient client = new HttpClient(new SimpleHttpConnectionManager(true)); ...... } catch (IOException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } finally { method.releaseConnection(); } } } The threads are run every one second: for (int i=0; i <1000; i++) { MyThread thread = threads.get(i) // threads is a static field if(thread.isAlive()) { // If the previous thread is still running, let it run. } else { thread.start(); } } The problem is if I run the job every one second I get random exceptions like these: java.net.BindException: Address already in use INFO httpclient.HttpMethodDirector: I/O exception (java.net.BindException) caught when processing request: Address already in use INFO httpclient.HttpMethodDirector: Retrying request But if I run the job every 2 seconds or more, everything runs fine. I even tried shutting down the instance of SimpleHttpConnectionManager() using shutDown() with no effect. If I do netstat, I see thousands of TCP connections in TIME_WAIT state, which means they are have been closed and are clearing up. So to limit the no of connections, I tried using a single instance of HttpClient and use it like this: public class MyHttpClientFactory { private static MyHttpClientFactory instance = new HttpClientFactory(); private MultiThreadedHttpConnectionManager connectionManager; private HttpClient client; private HttpClientFactory() { init(); } public static HttpClientFactory getInstance() { return instance; } public void init() { connectionManager = new MultiThreadedHttpConnectionManager(); HttpConnectionManagerParams managerParams = new HttpConnectionManagerParams(); managerParams.setMaxTotalConnections(1000); connectionManager.setParams(managerParams); client = new HttpClient(connectionManager); } public HttpClient getHttpClient() { if (client != null) { return client; } else { init(); return client; } } } However after running for exactly 2 hours, it starts throwing 'too many open files' and eventually cannot do anything at all. ERROR java.net.SocketException: Too many open files INFO httpclient.HttpMethodDirector: I/O exception (java.net.SocketException) caught when processing request: Too many open files INFO httpclient.HttpMethodDirector: Retrying request I should be able to increase the no of connections allowed and make it work, but I would just be prolonging the evil. Any idea what is the best practise to use HttpClient in a situation like above? Btw, I am still on HttpClient3.1.
