• Deleting Part of An Array in Java to Free Memory on Heap

  I am implementing a dynamic programming algorithm for the knapsack problem in Java. I declare the array and then initialize its size to be [number of objects][capacity of knapsack]. When my number of objects or my capacity gets too large, I get a memory error because I run out of space on the heap. My questions is: If I delete rows from my double array as I go along, will Java free the memory as I delete? Or does Java reserve that memory space for the size of the array I originally created? If it's the latter, is there a way to manually free the memory in Java? Thanks for your Help!

• When does code bloat start having a noticeable effect on performance?

  I am looking to make a hefty shift towards templates in one of my OpenGL projects, mainly for fun and the learning experience. I plan on watching the size of the executable carefully as I do this, to see just how much of the notorious bloat happens. Currently, the size of my Release build is around 580 KB when I favor speed and 440 KB when I favor size. Yes, it's a tiny project, and in fact even if my executable bloats 10 x its size, it's still going to be 5 MB or so, which hardly seems large by today's standards... or is it? This brings me to my question. Is speed proportional to size, or are there leaps and plateaus at certain thresholds, thresholds which I should be aiming to stay below? (And if so, what are the thresholds specifically?)

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

• Unresolved External Symbol

  I am working on wrapping a large number of .h and .lib files from native C++ to Managed C++ for eventual use as a referenced .dll in C#. I have the .lib files linked in and everything has been going smoothly so far. Upon wrapping the latest .h file, I hit a snag when 2 functions came back with the link error: error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __imp__htonl@4 referenced in function "public: void __thiscall Field::setCharacter(unsigned char,int)" (?setCharacter@Field@@QAEXEH@Z) myutils.lib I have referenced "myutils.lib" in the linker options, so that shouldn't be the issue. What's strange is that I have about 20 functions in this particular .h file and all of the rest are linking just fine except for 3 functions. Any ideas?

• Can I force MySQL to output results before query is completed?

  I have a large MySQL table (about 750 million rows) and I just want to extract a couple of columns. SELECT id, delid FROM tbl_name; No joins or selection criteria or anything. There is an index on both fields (separately). In principle, it could just start reading the table and spitting out the values immediately, but in practice the whole system just chews up memory and basically grinds to a halt. It seems like the entire query is being executed and the output stored somewhere before ANY output is produced... I've searched on unbuffering, turning off caches etc, but just cannot find the answer. (mysqldump is almost what I want except it dumps the whole table - but at least it just starts producing output immediately)

Each GPS device daily data quantity is: 24 * 60 * 2 = 2,880 10 000 10,000 GPS devices daily data quantity is: 10000 * 2880 = 28,800,000 Each GPS data approximately 160Byte, the amount of data per day is: 28,800,000 * 160 = 4.29GB We need hold at least 3 months of GPS data in the database, My question is: 1, whether SQL Server 2005 can support such a large amount of data store? 2, How to plan data table? (all GPS data storage in one table? Daily table? Each GPS device with a GPS data table?) • Resources for Win32 C/C++ programming

  I have experience in a variety of languages (Java, Perl, C#, PHP, javascript, ansi-C for microprocessors, Objective-C and others), with Win32 programming not being an area I've done a lot of work in. Now part of my job entails maintaining a large Win32 codebase that stretches back 15 years and includes everything from C written originally for Win95 to MFC to COM to 64-bit code for Win7 to C++ using Boost and so on. If there's a variation on how to do something it's in there. Are there any good Win32 C/C++ references that discuss both the proper way to do things today and give you a little sense of how things evolved? Something like this discussion of all the various boolean types, or how to approach the API monstrosity of simply copying a string. I don't see my career heading too far down this path, but I do like to understand what I'm working with and I think this is an important part of programming history. thanks, Eric

• Software to cd (change directories) into .jar/.ear files?

  Is there any software/script that will allow me to cd (change directories) into .jar/.ear/.zip files and edit the contents of the files it contains? I'm working on a large EJB project (yuck), and I frequently find myself in situations like the following: something.ear/ |-- something.jar/ | `-- fileINeedToEdit.xml I work primarily via the command line (Mac/Linux), so I find myself decompressing the files with jar -xvf, editing the file I need to edit, and then recompressing with jar -cvf. Obviously, this becomes a major headache after the first few times. I'd like to be able to treat the compressed files as directories, and simply cd (or some alternate command) to the file I want to edit. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

  I have a windows service that receives a large amount of data that needs to be transformed and persisted to a database. To ensure that we do not lose data, I want to create a "Write cache" for the data that will continue regardless if the database is online. Once the database becomes available again, I would want it to flush the content of the cache back into the database. I've seen some articles indicating that I might be able to do this with NHibernate, but I haven't found it conclusively. What options exist for this, and is NHibernate the appropriate direction?

  For this website we're working on, we're trying to get the most popular topics (based on how many posts have been made in them within the last 24 hours). We have a medium to large based forum, and the current MySQL query looks like this: SELECT `forums_topics`.*, ( SELECT COUNT(`id`) FROM `forums_posts` WHERE `postdate` > (UNIX_TIMESTAMP()-60*60*24) AND `topicid`=`forums_topics`.`id` ) AS `trendy_threads` FROM `forums_topics` WHERE `deleted`=0 ORDER BY `trendy_threads` DESC,`postdate` DESC LIMIT 3 This unfortunately causes an SQL timeout with just one query and Error 500's. How can we get this information as quickly and as efficiently as possible?

• Create a complex SQL query?

  Hey guys, I have a program that allows me to run queries against a large database. I have two tables that are important right now, Deposits and withdraws. Each contains a history of every user. I need to take each table, add up every deposit and withdraws (per user), then subtract the withdraws from the deposits. I then need to return every user whos result is negative (aka they withdrew more then they deposited). Is this possible in one query? Example: Deposit Table: |ID|UserName|Amount| |1 | Use1 |100.00| |2 | Use1 |50.00 | |3 | Use2 |25.00 | |4 | Use1 | 5.00 | WithDraw Table: |ID|UserName|Amount| |2 | Use2 | 5.00 | |1 | Use1 |100.00| |4 | Use1 | 5.00 | |3 | Use2 |25.00 | So then the result would output: |OverWithdrawers| | Use2 | Is this possible (I sure don't know how to do it)?   I've read a lot of comments mention in passing that the BlackBerry threading model deviates from the Java standard and can cause issues, but no amount of googling has enlightened me on what this means exactly. I've been developing a fairly large business application for the BlackBerry and, although I don't really have any previous experience with Java multi-threaded applications, haven't come across any issue that we've been able to blame on threading, other than what we caused ourselves. Can someone describe exactly how the BlackBerry threading model is different, and how I as a developer should take that into account? Obviously any links on the topic would also be great.

• Can you use POST to run a query in Solr (/select)

  I have queries that I am running against out solr index that sometimes have very long query parameters, I get errors when i run these queries, which i assume are do to the limit of a GET query parameters. Here is the method I use to query (JSON), this is to show I am using the Http Extensions (the client i use is a thin wrapper for HttpClient) not an end to end solution. 90% of the queries run fine, it is just when the params are large i get the 500 error from solr. I have read somewhere you can use POSt's when doing the select command but have not found examples of how to do it. • What does this C++ code mean

  I was trying to understand how webkit parses urls, and I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of this: Vector<char, 4096> buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1); This line is on line 1214 (you can see it here: http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/platform/KURL.cpp#L1214). I get that it's making a vector of type char, with each entry being an array of char 4096 bytes large, but I don't get the buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1) part. I think that it confuses me most b/c I can't find where the buffer variable is instantiated anywhere (shouldn't it be something more like Vector<char, 4096> buffer = new Vector<char, 4096>(...)?   Question: What is a good datatype to keep in session for a large collection of keys and values to frequently reference and update? Application: Updating an old .NET web app with a million pages and grids to have all the grids maintain their sort. They currently access helper code to format themselves graphically on load and on sort. I figured I could add to that code to check for a key based on the page and grid id in a collection in session to see if it has a previous expression on load. and the on sort update/add its appropriate item in the collection.   I'm doing Elgamal Signature Scheme and I need to use the decimal hash value from the message to compute S for signature generation. string hash = md5(message); cout << hash << endl; NTL::ZZ msgHash = strtol(hash.c_str(), NULL, 16); cout << msgHash << endl; There are no integer large enough to contain the value of 32 byte hexadecimal hash, and so I tried big integer from NTL library but it didn't work out because you cannot assign long integer to NTL::ZZ type. Is there any good solution to this? I'm doing this with visual C++ in Visual Studio 2013.

  In C, which would be more proper... void MyFunction() { int* array; int size; //do a bunch of stuff size = 10; array = (int*)(sizeof(int)*size); //do more stuff... //no longer need array... free(array); } Or is something like this okay? void MyFunction() { int size; //do a bunch of stuff size = 10; array[size]; //do more stuff... } The malloc uses the heap instead of the stack, so I suppose if you know size is going to be very large you'd want to malloc... but if you're quite certain size will be small enough, would the second method be reasonable?

• Combining bordering shapefiles in R

  I have five shapefiles of bordering counties in California that I am trying to combine into one large shapefile and maintain the original borders of the counties. I then want to plot points such as this so the map only needs to be a simple map of county boundaries. Is there a way to do this in R or will I have to use something like ArcGIS? There is extensive documentation about merging within a shapefile such as here where both shapefiles have the same coordinates. But no documentation on shapefiles that only partially share coordinates.

• Selecting data effectively sql

  Hi, I have a very large table with over 1000 records and 200 columns. When I try to retreive records matching some criteria in the WHERE clause using SELECT statement it takes a lot of time. But most of the time I just want to select a single record that matches the criteria in the WHERE clause rather than all the records. I guess there should be a way to select just a single record and exit which would minimize the retrieval time. I tried ROWNUM=1 in the WHERE clause but it didn't really work cause I guess the engine still checks all the records even after finding the first record matching the WHERE criteria. Is there a way to optimize in case if I want to select just a few records? Thanks in advance. Edit: I am using oracle 10g.

  I have a struct that's defined with a large number of vanilla char* pointers, but also an object member. When I try to statically initialize such a struct, I get a compiler error. typedef struct { const char* pszA; // ... snip ... const char* pszZ; SomeObject obj; } example_struct; // I only want to assign the first few members, the rest should be default example_struct ex = { "a", "b" }; SomeObject has a public default constructor with no arguments, so I didn't think this would be a problem. But when I try to compile this (using VS), I get the following error: error C2248: 'SomeObject::SomeObject' : cannot access private member declared in class 'SomeObject' Any idea why?

• FindControl() method throws ArithmeticException?

  I have a line of C# in my ASP.NET code behind that looks like this: DropDownList ddlStates = (DropDownList)fvAccountSummary.FindControl("ddlStates"); The DropDownList control is explicitly declared in the markup on the page, not dynamically created. It is inside of a FormView control. When my code hits this line, I am getting an ArithmeticException with the message "Value was either too large or too small for an Int32." This code has worked previously, and is in production right now. I fired up VS2008 to make some changes to the site, but before I changed anything, I got this exception from the page. Anyone seen this one before?

I'm writing a Word addin using Addin Express with Delphi, and I use some other 3rd party VCL's also, including virtual stringtree, TNT controls, etc. Now I cannot input Russian characters in Word anymore, but I can input English and Chinese.... • Django: ordering numerical value with order_by

  I'm in a situation where I must output a quite large list of objects by a CharField used to store street addresses. My problem is, that obviously the data is ordered by ASCII codes since it's a Charfield, with the predictable results .. it sort the numbers like this; 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 21.... Now the obvious step would be to change the Charfield the proper field type (IntegerField let's say), however it cannot work since some address might have apartments .. like "128A". I really don't know how I can order this properly ..
