• Custom validation summary

  I'm using the UpdateModel method for validation. How do I specify the text for the error messages as they appear in the validation summary? Sorry, I wasn't entirely clear. When I call UpdateModel(), if there is parsing error, for example if a string value is specified for a double field, a "SomeProperty is invalid" error message is automatically added to the ModelState. How do I specify the text for said automatically generated error message? If I implement IDataErrorInfo as suggested, it's error message property gets called for every column, regardless of whether the default binder deems it valid or not. I'd have to reimplement the parse error catching functionality that I get for free with the default binder. Incidentally, the default "SomeProperty is invalid" error messages seem to have mysteriously dissappeared in the RC. A validation summary appears and the relevant fields are highlighted but the text is missing! Any idea why this is? Thanks again and I hope all this waffle makes sense!

  I was reading DJB's "Some thoughts on security after ten years of Qmail 1.0" and he listed this function for moving a file descriptor: int fd_move(to,from) int to; int from; { if (to == from) return 0; if (fd_copy(to,from) == -1) return -1; close(from); return 0; } It occurred to me that this code does not check the return value of close, so I read the man page for close(2), and it seems it can fail with EINTR, in which case the appropriate behavior would seem to be to call close again with the same argument. Since this code was written by someone with far more experience than I in both C and UNIX, and additionally has stood unchanged in qmail for over a decade, I assume there must be some nuance that I'm missing that makes this code correct. Can anyone explain that nuance to me?

• recursion tree and binary tree cost calculation

  Hi all, I've got the following recursion: T(n) = T(n/3) + T(2n/3) + O(n) The height of the tree would be log3/2 of 2. Now the recursion tree for this recurrence is not a complete binary tree. It has missing nodes lower down. This makes sense to me, however I don't understand how the following small omega notation relates to the cost of all leaves in the tree. "... the total cost of all leaves would then be Theta (n^log3/2 of 2) which, since log3/2 of 2 is a constant strictly greater then 1, is small omega(n lg n)." Can someone please help me understand how the Theta(n^log3/2 of 2) becomes small omega(n lg n)?

• how to detect an escape sequence in a string

  Given a string named line whose raw version has this value: \rRAWSTRING how can I detect if it has the escape character \r? What I've tried is: if repr(line).startswith('\r'): blah... but it doesn't catch it. I also tried find, such as: if repr(line).find('\r') != -1: blah doesn't work either. What am I missing? thx! EDIT: thanks for all the replies and the corrections re terminolgy and sorry for the confusion. OK, if i do this print repr(line) then what it prints is: '\rSET ENABLE ACK\n' (including the single quotes). i have tried all the suggestions, including: line.startswith(r'\r') line.startswith('\\r') each of which returns False. also tried: line.find(r'\r') line.find('\\r') each of which returns -1

• TinyMCE editor - line breaks not correct

• How to define a multipage environment not interrupted by tables and figures?

  I have defined a new LaTeX environment for excursions in a book chapter I am writing. The environment is multipage and often includes inline images. Moreover, I am using the shaded environment to give the environment a background colour to make it stand out a bit. However, the environment, as shown below, is split up by floating tables and images, which makes the flow of the environment visually more difficult to follow. For example, it is now difficult to see if that floating image or table is part (the missing background colour does not help).   I'm trying to add some dynamic controls to my Silverlight page after a WCF call. When I try to add a control to I get an error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.   Hi, I have a feeling of missing something obvious. UDP receiver application. It holds a collection of valid UDP sender IPs - only guys with IP on that list will be considered. Since that list must be looked at on every packet and UDPs are so volatile, that operation must be maximum fast. Good choice is Dictionary but it is a key-value structure and what I actually need here is a dictionary-like (hash lookup) key only structure. Is there something like that? An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) • Using svn with xampp for php projects

  I have heard a lot about version control and would like to work on it. I read some tutorials about the same. However i am not quite sure how svn works with xampp. I have installed svn, Tortoise svn and made the necessary changes in xampp. For instance i copied the two required modules to c:/xampp/apache/modules and also made changes to the conf file in apache. Here are the changes made in c:/xampp/apache/conf/httpd.conf. # Configure Subversion repository <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNPath “C:\svn” AuthType Basic AuthName “Subversion repository” AuthUserFile “c:\svn_conf\passwd” Require valid-user </Location>t I created the repository at c:/svn and also created the password file. However when i visit http:/localhost/svn i get a 404 page not found error. Where am i going wrong. what am i missing.? Any pointers?? Thanks in advance.

• RMI java doesn't create skeleton class

  I wrote a remote service MyremoteImpl.java and used following command after compiled it. rmic MyRemoteImpl I learned that this method suppose to create stub class and a skeleton class but I can only see the stub class, why is that? • Using NSURLRequest+NSURLConnection seems overkill for a webcall with no data return

  All, This might seems very straightforward but I have already gone through the URL loading system program guide and the various NSURL.... classes and not found my answer. I am just trying to do a simple call from the app to a website to reserve a party spot: NSString *path=[NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://www.myparty123.com/ireservedURL.asp?Nickname=%@&Seat=%i&Email=%@&Currentparty=%i",john,5432,[email protected],6598]; NSURL* reservationURL =[NSURL URLWithString:path]; NSData *call= [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:reservationURL]; This seemed to be the simple way but I get this warning that I am not using the "call" variable. And it seems overkill to do a call using NSData where there is no data return. Yet, creating an NSURLRequest and initiating an NSURLConnection and then implementing delegates with that request seems to be overkill as well. What am I missing. Thanks KMB

• Difference between Popup's IsOpen and Visibility properties?

  I've played around with the WPF Popup Control and as far as I can see, the Visibility property is superfluous. If you have a Popup with IsOpen = True, it will be visible even if its Visibility = Collapsed. If you have a Popup with IsOpen = False, then its Visibility will be Collapsed, and will remain "Collapsed" when IsOpen changes to true, and it will appear. (i.e. you'll have something that appears on your screen, even though Snoop says it is Collapsed.) Why does the Popup control have both these properties? Am I missing something here?

• localtime_r supposed to be thread safe, but causing errors in Valgrind DRD

  I searched google as much as I could but I couldn't find any good answers to this. localtime_r is supposed to be a thread-safe function for getting the system time. However, when checking my application with Valgrind --tool=drd, it consistantly tells me that there is a data race condition on this function. Are the common search results lying to me, or am I just missing something? It doesn't seem efficient to surround each localtime_r call with a mutex, especially if it is supposed to by thread safe in the first place. here is how i'm using it: timeval handlerTime; gettimeofday(&handlerTime,NULL); tm handlerTm; localtime_r(&handlerTime.tv_sec,&handlerTm); Any ideas?

  I've been thinking about using Markov techniques to restore missing information to natural language text. Restore mixed case to text in all caps Restore accents / diacritics to languages which should have them but have been converted to plain ASCII Convert rough phonetic transcriptions back into native alphabets That seems to be in order of least difficult to most difficult. Basically the problem is resolving ambiguities based on context. I can use Wiktionary as a dictionary and Wikipedia as a corpus using n-grams and Markov chains to resolve the ambiguities. Am I on the right track? Are there already some services, libraries, or tools for this sort of thing? • How to refer to a previously computed value in SQL Query statement

  I am trying to add a CASE statement to the end of my SQL query to compute a value depending upon another table value and a previously computed value in the SELECT. The error is returned that DelivCount is an invalid column name. Is there a better way to do this or am I missign something? • How do I make lines scale when using GLOrtho?

  I'm using GLOrtho to set up a 2D view that I can render textures onto. It works really well, up until I try to zoom in on the image. If I pass half the width and half the height of the viewport to GLOrtho, I end up with all my textures displayed twice as big as normal, which is exactly what I expect. But then I try to draw a box around part of the image and it all falls apart. I call glBegin(GL_LINE_LOOP), place the four vertices, and call glEnd, and I expect to see the same thing I would see if I drew it at normal zoom level, doubled. Instead, I get lines that are all the right length, but they all come out one pixel wide, instead of two, and it looks really bad. What am I missing?

• BULK INSERT with inconsitant number of columns

  I am trying to load a large amount data in SQL server from a flat file using BULK INSERT. However, my file has varying number of column, for instance the first row contains 14 and the second contains 4. That is OK, I just want to make a table with the max number of columns and load the file into it with nulls for the missing columns. I can play with it from that point. But it seems that SQL Server when reaching the end of the line and having more columns to fill for that same row in the destination table, just moves on to the next line and attempts to put the data on that line to the wrong column of the table. Is there a way to get the behavior that I am looking for? Is there a table hint that I can use the specify this? Has anyone run into this before? • C++ input chaining in C#

  I am trying to learn C# coming from C++. I am writing just some basic console stuff to get a feel for it and was wondering if it is possible to do simple chaining of inputs in C#. For example in C++: cout<<"Enter two numbers: "; cin >> int1 >> int2; You could then just input 3 5 and hit enter and the values will be fine. In C# however I have to split it up(as far as I can tell) like this: Console.Write("Enter the first number: "; int1 = (char)Console.Read(); Console.Writeline(""); Console.Write("Enter the second number: "; int2 = (char)Console.Read(); Maybe I am just missing something.

  Python has a very handy package that can parse nearly any unambiguous date and provides helpful error messages on a parse failure, python-dateutil. Comparison to the SimpleDateFormat class is not favorable - AFAICT SimpleDateFormat can only handle one exact date format and the error messages have no granularity. I've looked through the Joda API but it appears Joda is the same way - only one explicit format can be parsed at a time. Is there any package or library that reproduces the python-dateutil behavior? Or am I missing something WRT Joda/SimpleDateFormat?

• Are all public read/write members serialized with XmlSerializer?

  I have a handful of public read/write members that are not being serialized and I can't figure out why. Reviewing some code, and my root class is marked serializable: [Serializable] public class MyClass I have a default constructor that initializes 10-15 string members. There are about 50 public read/write string members in MyClass with get and set--no explicit serialization attributes are set on any of these. Serialization looks like this: XmlSerializer x = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyClass)); TextWriter twWriter = new StreamWriter(sFileName); x.Serialize(twWriter, this); twWriter.Close(); only a handful (20-30) of these members are actually seralized to my xml file. what am i missing or misunderstanding about the XmlSerializer class?

• Easy way to add multiple existing .csproj to a Visual Studio Solution?

  I've checked out a branch of C# code from source control. It contains maybe 50 projects in various folders. There's no existing .sln file to be found. I intended to create a blank solution to add existing solutions. The UI only lets me do this one project at a time. Is there something I'm missing? I'd like to specify a list of *.csproj files and somehow come up with a .sln file that contains all the projects.
