While there is a lot of discussion about the best one, I'd like to hear your stories about the worst programming languages you ever worked with and I'd like to know exactly what annoyed you. • .NET4: In-Process Side-by-Side Execution Explained

  Overview: I'm interested in learning more about the .NET4 "In-Process Side-by-Side Execution" of assemblies, and need additional information to help me demystify it. Motivation: The application in question is built against .NET2, and uses two third-party libraries that also work against .NET2. The application is deployed (via file copy) to client machines in a virtual environment that includes .NET2. Not my architecture, please bear with me. Goal: To see if it's possible to rebuild the application assemblies (or a subset) against .NET4, and ship the application as before, without changing the third-party libraries and including the .NET4 Client Profile (as described here) in the deployment. Steps Taken: The following articles were read, but didn't quite provide me enough information: In-Process Side-by-Side Execution: Browsed this article, and Scenario Two is the closest it comes to describing something that resembles my situation, but doesn't really cover it with any depth. ASP.NET Side-by-Side Execution Overview: This article covers a web application, but I'm dealing with a client WinForms application. CLR Team Blog: In-Process Side-by-Side: This is useful to explain how plug-ins to host processes function under .NET4, but I don't know if this applies to the third-party libraries. Further Steps: I'm also unclear on how to proceed upgrading a single .NET2 assembly to .NET4, with the overall application remaining in .NET2 (i.e. how to configure the solution/project files, if any special code needs to be included, etc.).

• Python - Help with multiprocessing / threading basics.

  I haven't ever used multi-threading, and I decided to learn it today. I was reluctant to ever use it before, but when I tried it out it seemed way to easy, which makes me wary. Are there any gotchas in my code, or is it really that simple? import uuid import time import multiprocessing def sleep_then_write(content): time.sleep(5) f = open(unicode(uuid.uuid4()), 'w') f.write(content) f.close() if __name__ == '__main__': for i in range(3): p = multiprocessing.Process(target=sleep_then_write, args=('Hello World',)) p.start() My primary purpose of using threading would be to offload multiple images to S3 after re-sizing them, all at the same time. Is that a reasonable task for Python's multiprocessing? I've read a lot about certain types of tasks not really getting any gain from using threading in Python due to the GIL, but it seems that multiprocessing completely removes that worry, yes? I can imagine a case where 50 users hit the system and it spawns 150 Python interpreters. I can also imagine that wouldn't be good on a production server. How can something like that be avoided? Finally (but most important): How can I return control back to the caller of the new processes? I need to be able to continue with returning an HTTP response and content back to the user and then have the processes continue doing there work after the user of my website is done with the transaction.

The solution works until it's deployed to Sharepoint.   Our web service wraps around a third party library that contains the following code. We are using an Active Directory service account in the IIS 6 app pool (no interactive login abilities). Our service fails with the error “The system cannot find the file specified”. We’ve traced the error to the “RSACryptoServiceProvider provider = new RSACryptoServiceProvider();”. The third party assembly depends on a x509 file based certificate for its encryption process and the Service Account has Read / Write access to the keys folder. Additionally, the service account has Read, Write, Modify rights to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys”.   Hello All, I'm using following code to save html to pdf file. But it fails to compile at if (!theDoc.Chainable(theID)). I do have using WebSupergoo.ABCpdf4; added at the begining of the code. Is this version issue? Is there any other method to save HTML string to pdf file in ABCPdf 4. • Good DB Migrations for CakePHP?

  Hi, I have been trying a few migration scripts for CakePHP but I ran into problems with all of the in some form or another. Please advice me on a migration option for Cake that you use live and know works. I'd like the following "features": -Support CakePHP 1.2(e.g. CakeDCs migrations will only be an option when 1.3 is stable and my app migrated to the new codebase) -Support for (or at least not halt on) Models with a different database config. -Support Models in sub-folders of app/models -Support Models in plugins -Support tables that do not conform to Cake conventions (I have a few special tables that do not have a single primary key field and need to keep them) -Plays well with automated deployment via Capistrano and Git. I do not need rails-style versioned files a git versioned schema file that is compared live to the existing schema will do. That is: I like the SchemaShell in Cake apart from it not being compatible with most of my requirements above. • VS2008 EF and non crud SP usage.

  Using an edmx version of EF. My returned data is a join between tables that has a COMPOUND filter on the primary table. In essence this query is going to return a SEGMENT of Law codes and descriptions that a user can tie to a Sex Offender report. I have a complex SP because Linq2SQL cannot pass in a between statement, or at least that is how I understand the error. The Code itself is broken up by '-' marks. 39-13-504 "Aggravated Sexual Battery" User wants to have a query with 4 parmas 39, 13, 500, 599. Get all codes from Title 39 and Chapter 13 with parts between 500 and 599. I have the SP in place to do the work, is there are way to consume the SP within the EF? I find many blogs about SPs with CRUD operations as their use of an SP. That doesn't fit this need at all. I do not have a single table but a join to the "prior selections" table that maps the key for the code. Any pointers on how to get a READ with an SP? TIA

• SQLite table does not exist exception for existing SQLite database (and table)

  I've followed the instructions given here for introducing an existing SQLite database to your Android app. When I query the table "android_metadata" this is fine. But when I run a similar query on my own table "words" (which has _id for primary integer key) I get a table does not exist exception and the app crashes. Why is that? Code: Cursor c = myDatabase.query("android_metadata", null, null, null, null, null, null, null); works but Cursor c = myDatabase.query("words", null, null, null, null, null, null, null); returns a table does not exist exception. • Can I select 0 columns in SQL Server?

  I am hoping this question fares a little better than the similar Create a table without columns. Yes, I am asking about something that will strike most as pointlessly academic. It is easy to produce a SELECT result with 0 rows (but with columns), e.g. SELECT a = 1 WHERE 1 = 0. Is it possible to produce a SELECT result with 0 columns (but with rows)? e.g. something like SELECT NO COLUMNS FROM Foo. (This is not valid T-SQL.) I came across this because I wanted to insert several rows without specifying any column data for any of them. e.g. (SQL Server 2005) CREATE TABLE Bar (id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY) INSERT INTO Bar SELECT NO COLUMNS FROM Foo -- Invalid column name 'NO'. -- An explicit value for the identity column in table 'Bar' can only be specified when a column list is used and IDENTITY_INSERT is ON. One can insert a single row without specifying any column data, e.g. INSERT INTO Foo DEFAULT VALUES. One can query for a count of rows (without retrieving actual column data from the table), e.g. SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Foo. (But that result set, of course, has a column.) • Changes in resolving .resx in Visual Studio 2010?

  Hi, I'm working on a quite simple Webpage (MVC2), using localisation based on ResourceFiles. I have the MVC2 Project and the Resources in a seperate Assembly. The Resources contains 3 languages (Resource.resx, Resource.de.resx, Resource.en.resx, Resource.ja.resx) and I'm querying them via the ResourceManager. • Cannot update a single field using Linq to Sql

  I am having a hard time attempting to update a single field without having to retrieve the whole record prior to saving. For example, in my web application I have an in place editor for the Name and Description fields of an object. Once you edit either field, it sends the new field (with the object's ID value) to the web server. What I want is the webserver to take that value and ID and only update the one field. There are only two ways google tells me to do this: 1) When I get the value I want to change, the value and the ID, retrieve the record from the database, update the field in the c# object, and then send it back to the server. I don't like this method because not only does it include a completely unnecessary database read call (which includes two tables due to the way my schema is). 2) Set UpdateCheck for all the fields (but the primary keys) to UpdateCheck.Never. This doesn't work for me (I think) due to my mapping layer between the Linq to Sql and my Entity/ViewModel layer. When I convert my entity into the linq to sql db object it seems to be updating those fields regardless of the UpdateCheck setting. This might be just because of integers, since not setting an int means it is a zero (and no, I can't use int? instead). Are there any other options that I have?

• MSBuild fails, but building inside Visual Studio works fine

  C#, .NET 2.0 I have an ASP.NET website in a solution, with 2 other projects (used as library references). When I build (debug or release) in Visual Studio, everything works fine. However, building with MSBuild fails. This build had been working (it's actually invoked via a nAnt task). The only thing that has changed is that I have a new user control whose Type I am referencing in my code behind. The offending code is in my ASPX code behind. MessageAlert is the UserControl: MessageAlert userControl = this.LoadControl("~/UserControls/MessageAlert.ascx") as MessageAlert; userControl.UserMessage = message; this.UserMessages.Controls.Add(userControl); In order to get Visual Studio to recognize the type 'MessageAlert' I had to: 1) Set the ClassName="MessageAlert" in the @Control markup at the top of the user control (because using the auto-generated UserControls_MessageAlert wasn't working either) 2) Register the user control in the markup of my ASPX, using an @Register 3) Add a "using ASP" to the top of my code behind After those steps, I could successfully reference the MessageAlert type in my codebehind from visual studio. But from MSBuild I get "The type or namespace name 'MessageAlert' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " The MSBuild execution is very simple - it points the the very same solution file and sets the configuration property to release. It seems, based on the # of steps I had to go through to get Type references to MessageAlert in Visual Studio, that there is something missing in the MSBuild process. But what? Doesn't Visual Studio in fact invoke MSBuild behind the scenes? Is there a better way to reference a UserControl type in the code behind of an ASPX? EDIT: To clarify, the MessageAlert user control is not in the other referenced assemblies/projects. I mentioned them because, together with the website, the compose the Solution file, which is the same sln file being built by MS Build.

  We would like to enumerate all strings in a resource file in .NET (resx file). We want this to generate a javascript object containing all these key-value pairs. Now I can do the same with .resx files as I did with the embedded resources. Here is the code. Note that Microsoft made a needed constructor private, so I use reflection to access it. • Sql Query - Selecting rows where user can be both friend and user

  Hey Sorry the title is not very clear. This is a follow up to my earlier question where one of the members helped me with a query. I have a following friends Table Friend friend_id - primary key user_id user_id_friend status The way the table is populated is - when I send a friend request to John - my userID appears in user_id and Johns userID appears in user_id_friend. Now another scenario is say Mike sends me a friend request - in this case mike's userID will appear in user_id and my userID will appear in user_id_friend So to find all my friends - I need to run a query to find where my userID appears in both user_id column as well as user_id_friend column What I am trying to do now is - when I search for user say John - I want all users Johns listed on my site to show up along with the status of whether they are my friend or not and if they are not - then show a "Add Friend" button. Based on the previous post - I got this query which does part of the job - My example user_id is 1: SELECT u.user_id, f.status FROM user u LEFT OUTER JOIN friend f ON f.user_id = u.user_id and f.user_id_friend = 1 where u.name like '%' So this only shows users with whom I am friends where they have sent me request ie my userID appears in user_id_friend. Although I am friends with others (where my userID appears in user_id column) - this query will return that as null To get those I need another query like this SELECT u.user_id, f.status FROM user u LEFT OUTER JOIN friend f ON f.user_id_friend = u.user_id and f.user_id = 1 where u.name like '%' So how do I combine these queries to return 1 set of users and what my friendship status with them is. • Trouble running setup package after Publishing in Visual Studio 2008

  I've got a small winform application that I've written that is running fine in the IDE. It builds with no errors or warnings. It's not using any third party controls. I'm coding in C# in Visual Studio 2008. When I Build -- Publish the application, everything seems to work fine. However, when I go and attempt to install the application via the setup.exe file I get an error message that says, "Application cannot be started." • Zend Framework subdomain+subfolder router rewrite problem

  I'm new to Zend Framwork and this is an issue I've been struggling for several hours already... I'm trying to chain Hostname and standard Route in order to get url with subdomain+subfolders ie.: http:// lang.mydomain.com/myapplication/public/controller http:// lang.mydomain.com/myapplication/public/controller/action (sorry for the empty space in the address, this site won't allow links) Basically what I have done in Bootstrap is: // add language to default route $routePath = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route( ':controller/:action/*', array('controller'=>'index','action' => 'index','module'=>'default') ); $routeHostname = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Hostname( ':lang.mydomain.com', array('lang'=>$lang) ); $frontController = $this->getResource('FrontController'); $router = $frontController->getRouter(); $router->addRoute('default', $routeHostname->chain($routePath)) $frontController->setRouter($router); it finds the route ok, but every time I generate url in view or layout by $this-url() <?php echo $this->url( array( 'controller'=> 'guestbook', 'action' => 'sign', 'lang' => Zend_Registry::get('lang'), ), 'default', true) ?>"> I get http:// lang.mydomain.com/controller instead of http:// lang.mydomain.com/myapplication/public/controller I've been trying to set baseUrl on front controller but no luck... Also I've tried the static route with myapplication/public or following standard route: 'myapplication/public/:controller/:action/*' - it result with "An error occurred Page not found Exception information: Message: No route matched the request" and empty request Is there any way to assembly subdomain with subfolder in Zend Framwork?? EDIT: I changed above to: $frontController->setBaseUrl('.'); // add language to default route $routePath = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route( 'quickstart/public/:controller/:action/*', array( 'controller'=>'index', 'action' => 'index', 'module'=>'default', ) ); and it works form me, although I'm not sure whether it's been correct approach...

• Autocomplete or Select box? (design problem)

  I'm working on a comparison website, so needless to say the search function is the primary feature of the site. I have two input text boxes and a search button. At the moment, the input text boxes use Ajax to query the database and show a drop-down box, but I'm wondering if it would be more intuitive to use a select box instead? The second box is dependant on the first, as when the first is selected theres another ajax query so only the available options for the first selection appear in the autocomplete box. Autocomplete Pros: - "Feels" right? - Looks more appealing than a select box (css design)? Cons: - the user has to be instructed on how to use the search (made to think?) - Only really works off the bat with javascript enabled. - The user may get confused if they type in what they want and no box appears (i.e., no results) Select Box Pros: - Can bring up the list of options / know whats there from the outset. - We use select boxes every day (locations etc.) so we're used to how they work. (more intuitive?) Cons: - Can look a little unaesthetic when theres too many options to choose from. I'm thinking maybe at most around 100 options for my site over time. Any thoughts on how I could go about this would be appreciated!
