• Using C preprocessor to construct a string literal for scanf?

  I'm attempting to create an sscanf string literal to aid in buffer overrun prevention in C99. The goal is something like: #define MAX_ARG_LEN 16 char arg[MAX_ARG_LEN] = ""; if (sscanf(arg, "%"(MAX_ARG_LEN-1)"X", &input) > 0) The obvious "manual" solution is something like: #define MAX_ARG_LEN 16 #define MAX_ARG_CHARS "15" char arg[MAX_ARG_LEN] = ""; if (sscanf(arg, "%"MAX_ARG_CHARS"X", &input) > 0) However, I would prefer something to automatically generate "%15X" given a buffer size of 16. • jQuery returning two elements for each one it finds?

  I'll start by saying I'm fairly new to jQuery. For the most part, I've found it intuitive and powerful, but this one circumstance has me thoroughly stumped. In the following method, the call to .each() returns two elements for every one found. It iterates over a set of table rows given IDs starting with the word, "communication," and followed by an ID number. For each row it returns, it processes twice. Using Firebug, I've validated that the DOM only has a single instance of each table row in question. Also using Firebug, I've validated that the method is not being called twice; the iteration in .each() is truly going over each returned table row twice. By the time all the AJAX call goodness is done, I'll have two entries in the database for each row created in the table. This is the code that's causing the issues: function getCommunications() { var list = $('[id^=communication]'); var communications = new Array(); list.each(function () { var communication = { ID: $(this).find('.commCompanyID').val(), /* * SNIP: more object properties here that are * unnecessary to this discussion */ }; communications.push(communication); }); return communications; } At the point of return communications, the Array returned will contain twice as many elements as there are table rows. I should note that nearly identical code (but going against specific lists of divs) is working on the same page. It's just the table that's suffering the issues. I'm using jQuery 1.4.1, the version which shipped with Visual Studio .NET 2010. The table markup is fully dynamic -- that is, aside from the header row, it's dependent on data either returned at page load or created by the user via a dialog box. I'll drop in just the code for what's created at page load; again using Firebug I've validated that what I create dynamically when an end user creates a row with the dialog box matches. So running it on raw input for the first line would produce: Hi! How are you? &lt;script&gt;//NOT EVIL!&lt;/script&gt; Now I need to escape all the input, but at the same time I need to preserve emoticons in their initial state. So when there is <:-P emoticon, it stays like that and does not become &lt;:-P. I was thinking of running a regex split on the emotified text. Then processing each part on its own and then concatenating the string together, but I am not sure how easily can Regex be bypassed? I know the format will always be this: [<img class="smiley" alt="] [empty string] [" title="] [one of the values from a big list] [, ] [another value from the list (may be matching original emoticon)] [" src="ui/emoticons/] [integer from Y to X] [.gif">] Using the list MAY be slow, since I need to run that regex on text that may have 20-30-40 emoticons. Plus there may be 5-10-15 text messages to process. What could be an elegant solution to this? I am ready to use third-party library or jQuery for this. PHP preprocessing is possible as well.

• Can you use back references in the pattern part of a regular expression?

  I there a way to back reference in the regular expression pattern? Example input string: Here is "quoted text" some quoted text. Say I want to pull out the quoted text, I could create the following expression: "([^"]+)" This regular expression would match quoted text. Say I want it to also support single quotes, I could change the expression to: ["']([^"']+)["'] But what if the input string has a mixture of quotes say Here is 'quoted text" some quoted text. I would not want the regex to match. Currently the regex in the second example would still match. What I would like to be able to do is if the first quote is a double quote then the closing quote must be a double. And if the start quote is single quote then the closing quote must be single. Can I use a back reference to achieve this?

• What 'best practices' exist for handing enum heirarchies?

  I'm curious as to any solutions out there for addressing enum heirarchies. I'm working through some docs on Entity Framework 4 and trying to apply it to a simple inventory tracking program. The possible types for inventory to fall into are as follows: INVENTORY ITEM TYPES: Hardware PC Desktop Server Laptop Accessory Input (keyboards, scanners etc) Output (monitors, printers etc) Storage (USB sticks, tape drives etc) Communication (network cards, routers etc) Software What recommendations are there for handling enums in a situation like this? Are enums even the solution? I don't really want to have a ridiculously normalised database for such a relatively simple experiment (eg tables for InventoryType, InventorySubtype, InventoryTypeToSubtype etc). I don't really want to over-complicate my data model with each subtype being inherited even though no additional properties or methods are included (except PC types which would ideally have associated accessories and software but that's probably out of scope here). It feels like there should be a really simple, elegant solution to this but I can't put my finger on it. Any assistance or input appreciated!

  What is the difference between a rules engine and an expert system? Example1: Let's say that I have a program that determines the expiration date of a new driver's license. It takes inputs like visa expiration date, passport number, birthday, etc. It determines the expiration date of the driver's license from this input. It can even give an error if the input did not have enough valid identifications to allow a new driver's license. Example2: Let's say I am making an online version of the game Monopoly. I want the ability to change the rules of the game (say $400 for passing go or no one can buy properties until they land on the same property twice, etc). I have a module in the code to handle these rules. Are these both rules engines or are they expert systems? They both seem so similar. Is it just a synonym?

  Suppose I have a big program that consists of hundreds of methods in it. And according to the nature of input the program flow is getting changed. Think I want to make a change to the original flow. And it is big hassle to find call hierarchy/ references and understand the flow. Do I have any solution for this within Eclipse? Or a plugin? As an example, I just need a Log of method names that is in order of time. Then I don't need to worry about the methods that are not relevant with my "given input" Update : Using debug mode in eclipse or adding print messages are not feasible. The program is sooooo big. :)

• Query to return internal details about stored function in SQL Server database

  I have been given access to a SQL Server database that is currently used by 3rd party app. As such, I don't have any documentation on how that application stores the data or how it retrieves it. I can figure a few things out based on the names of various tables and the parameters that the user-defined functions takes and returns, but I'm still getting errors at every other turn. I was thinking that it would be really helpful if I could see what the stored functions were doing with the parameters given to return the output. Right now all I've been able to figure out is how to query for the input parameters and the output columns. Is there any built-in information_schema table that will expose what the function is doing between input and output?

• A shortest path problem with superheroes and intergalactic journeys

  You are a super-hero in the year 2222 and you are faced with this great challenge: starting from your home planet Ilop you must try to reach Acinhet or else your planet will be destroyed by evil green little monsters. To do this you are given a map of the universe: there are N planets and M inter-planetary connections ( bidirectional ) that bind these planets. Each connection requires a certain time and a certain amount of fuel in order for you to cover the connection from one planet to another. The total time spent going from one planet to another is obtained by multiplying the time past to cover each connection between all the planets you go through. There are some "key planets", that allow you to refuel if you arrive on those certain "key planets". A "key planet" is the planet with the property that if it disappears the road between at least two planets would be lost.(In the example posted below with the input/output files such a "key planet" is 2 because without it the road to 7 would be lost) When you start your mission you are given the possibility of choosing between K ships each with its own maximum fuel capacity. The goal is to find the SHORTEST TIME CONSUMING path but also choose the ship with the minimum fuel capacity that can cover that shortest path(this means that if more ships can cover the shortest path you choose the one with the minimum fuel capacity). Because the minimum time can be a rather large number (over long long int) you are asked to provide only the last 6 digits of the number. For a better understanding of the task, here is an example of input/output files: INPUT: mission.in 7 8 6 1 4 6 5 9 8 7 10 1 2 7 8 1 4 14 9 1 5 3 1 2 3 1 2 2 7 7 1 3 4 2 2 4 6 4 1 5 6 3 7 On the first line (in order): N M K On the second line :the number for the starting planet and the finishing planet On the third line :K numbers that represent the capacities of the ships you can choose from Then you have M lines, all of them have the same structure: Xi Yi Ti Fi-which means that there is a connection between Xi and Yi and you can cover the distance from Xi to Yi in Ti time and with a Fi fuel consumption. I am programming a program to search the name from the list and I need to find them if the keyword is not in front of the names (that's what I mean non-prefix) e.g. if I my list is the music instruments and I type "guit" to the search textbox.   Hi all, I have this upload code. there are no problem running it individually, but when i try to add into my other codes, it did not get the $_files parameter. • Pipe ffmpeg to oggenc(2) with .NET

  I am trying to encode ogg files at -q 6/192k. ffmpeg doesnt seem to be listenting to my command ffmpeg -i blah -acodec vorbis -ab 192k -y out.ogg So i would like to use the recommended ogg encoder. It says the input must be wav or similar. I would like to pipe a wav from ffmpeg to ogg. However not only am i unsure if oggenc2 will accept input from stdin, i have no idea how to pipe one process to another inside of .net using the Process class.

  I want to create classes Car, Vehicle, and Airplane with the following properties: Car and Airplane are both subclasses of Vehicle. Car and Airplane both have an initWithString method. The acceptable input strings for Car's and Airplane's initWithString methods do not overlap. Vehicle is "almost abstract", in the sense that any initialized instance should be either a Car or an Airplane. It is possible to pass a string into Vehicle and get back an instance of Car, an instance of Airplane, or nil, depending on the input string. Any particular design pattern I should prefer? In particular for Vehicle's initWithString and/or newVehicleWithString methods.

  Ok so I'm working on an Eclipse plugin based on the JGraph example. The problem is I can't really get the "save" method to work, here's how the program works in short: - I have a DiagramEditor class with an init() method, where I create a GraphEditor object and call the createFrame() methord of that object. - GraphEditor extends the BasicGraphEditor (which extends JPanel), the createFrame() method returns a JFrame and has a line "frame.setJMenuBar(menuBar)" - the "menuBar" is an object variable, which is initialized in the BasicGraphEditor. Till here everything is cool, the problem is with the action listener which is supposed to save a file. To get the graph I need to get the GraphEditor component, so I do a Component component = (Component) e.getSource() whitch is the ActionEvent passed to that action listener and at that stage is the JMenuItem "save", then I get the parent which is the JPopupMenu, then I want to get that JPopupMenu's parent which should be the GraphEdiotor, but instead I get a null. Any idea why? • How to save some values from an array in a controller in Rails?

  I've got a links array that I'm saving to a database. The problem is that the records aren't saved in the order of the array ie links[1] is saved before links[2] and so on...
