  • Win32 select/poll/eof/ANYTHING!?!?!

    Using the standard Win32 file I/O API's (CreateFile/ReadFile/etc), I'm trying to wait for a file to become readable, or for an exception to occur on the file. If Windows had any decent POSIX support, I could just do: select(file_count, files_waiting_for_read, NULL, files_waiting_for_excpt, NULL, NULL); And select will return when there's anything interesting on some of the files. Windows doesn't support select or poll. Fine. I figured I could take the file and do something like: while(eof(file_descriptor)) { Sleep(100); } The above loop would exit when more data is available to be read. But nope, Windows doesn't have an equivalent of eof() either! I could possibly call ReadFile() on the file, and determine if it's at the eof that way. But, then I'd have to handle the reading at that point in time -- I'm hoping to simply be able to figure out that a file is readable, without actually reading it. What are my options?

  • Why this base64 function stop working when increasing max length?

    I am using this class to encode/decode text to base64. It works fine with MAX_LEN up to 512 but if I increase it to 1024 the decode function returns and empty var.   • Problems with XAML WPF 4.0 Editor in VS2010

    Wondering if anybody else has found some very odd behaviour with the XAML/WPF 4 editor in VS2010. This only occurs if the project is using .NET 4. Whenever I tried to open a XAML document for editing, the window would appear to open for a split second and then vanish, but VS2010 would still list the window as open. The fault was eventually traced to having the "Reuse current document window, if saved" option under "Documents" in the "Environment" options checked. Once this was unchecked XAML 4 files opened as expected. As I said, this only appears to occur on projects targeted at .NET Framework 4 - those targeted at 3.5 worked without a problem, and the "Reuse current document window, if saved" appears to work fine on other files.

  • MS Access 2003 - Is there a way to programmatically define the data for a chart?

    So I have some VBA for taking charts built with the Form's Chart Wizard, and automatically inserting it into PowerPoint Presentation slides. I use those chart-forms as sub forms within a larger forms that has parameters the user can select to determine what is on the chart. The idea is that the user can determine the parameter, build the chart to his/her liking, and click a button and have it in a ppt slide with the company's background template, blah blah blah..... So it works, though it is very bulky in terms of the amount of objects I have to use to accomplish this. I use expressions such as the following: like forms!frmMain.Month&* to get the input values into the saved queries, which was fine when i first started, but it went over so well and they want so many options, that it is driving the number of saved queries/objects up. I need several saved forms with charts because of the number of different types of charts I need to have this be able to handle. SO FINALLY TO MY QUESTION: I would much rather do all this on the fly with some VBA.   • why doesn't winmain set the errorlevel?

I compile this program to the name a.exe. Then from command prompt I type: c:\> a.exe (message box is displayed, I press ok) c:\> echo %ERRORLEVEL% 0 I get the same results if I do exit(90); right before the return. It still says 0. I also tried to start the program via CreateProcess and obtain the result with GetExitCodeProcess but it also returns 0 to me. I did error checking to ensure it was all started correctly. I originally seen this problem in a more complex program. But made this simple program to verify the problem. Results are the same, both programs that have WinMain return 0 always. I tried both x64, x86 and unicode and MBCS compiling options. All give 0 as an error level/status code.

  • Generate EF4 POCO classes first time only

    The problem I'm having is, using the POCO templates, generating my POCO classes the first time only and not overwriting them when the templates are re-ran. I know this sounds hokey and the reason is that I'm actually changing these templates and trying to generate metadata classes rather than the actual POCO classes, but these metadata classes will be hand-edited and I want to keep those edits in the future but still regenerate a certain amount of it. I have it all working exactly as I want except for the regeneration of the files. I have looked into T4 and it seems that there is a flag to do just this (see the Output.PreserveExistingFile property) but I don't understand where/how to set this flag. If you can tell me where/how to set this in the default POCO templates, then I think that's all I really need. Thanks!! :-)

    Whenever Resharper encounters code like this: (treeListNode.Tag as GridLine).AdvertiserSeparation = 5; it presents you with a possible fix (since treeListNode.Tag as GridLine might be null). It says: 'Replace with Direct Cast', which turns the code into the following: ((GridLine) treeListNode.Tag).AdvertiserSeparation = 5; This is great. However, when it encounters code like this: GridLine line = treeListNode.Tag as GridLine; line.AdvertiserSeparation = 5; Resharper simply displays a warning 'Possible System.NullReferenceException', but does not offer me to 'Replace with Direct Cast'. Is there a way to make Resharper offer me this refactoring, since it already has it?

  • Can I use VS2010's Intellitrace to gather data for a Windows Service?

    I have a Windows service that I'd like to gather some debugging data on using Intellitrace - the problem is that you can't debug a Windows Service by starting it directly from inside VS. I have the service installed, and the very first statement in Service.Start is "Debug.Break", which allows me to attach VS. However, you can't use Intellitrace if a process is already started when you attach. Does anybody know of a workaround for this?

    Microsoft's FxCop tool uses the introspection API. This introspection API could be used to develop new code analysis tools. But the introspection api is not documented well. Additionally, I was not able to figure out any blogs which explains this API in breadth and depth of it. The knowledge gained by understanding the API can also be used for writing custom FxCop rules. Does anybody knows about any blog or resources which explains the same?

  • Help to restructure my Doc/View more correctly

    Edited by OP. My program is in need of a lot of cleanup and restructuring. In another post I asked about leaving the MFC DocView framework and going to the WinProc & Message Loop way (what is that called for short?). Well at present I am thinking that I should clean up what I have in Doc View and perhaps later convert to non-MFC it that even makes sense. My Document class currently has almost nothing useful in it. I think a place to start is the InitInstance() function (posted below). I only have one doc and one view. I feel like I am going about it backwards with GetNextDoc() and GetNextView(). To try to use a silly analogy; it's like I have a book in my hand but I have to look up in it's index to find out what page the Title of the book is on. I'm tired of feeling embarrassed about my code. I either need correction or reassurance, or both. :) Also, all the miscellaneous items are in no particular order.   • Insert a datetime value with GetDate() function to a SQL server (2005) table?

    I am working (or fixing bugs) on an application which was developed in VS 2005 C#. The application saves data to a SQL server 2005. One of insert SQL statement tries to insert a time-stamp value to a field with GetDate() TSQL function as date time value. Insert into table1 (field1, ... fieldDt) values ('value1', ... GetDate()); The reason to use GetDate() function is that the SQL server may be at a remove site, and the date time may be in a difference time zone. Therefore, GetDate() will always get a date from the server. As the function can be verified in SQL Management Studio, this is what I get: SELECT GetDate(), LEN(GetDate()); -- 2010-06-10 14:04:48.293 19 One thing I realize is that the length is not up to the milliseconds, i.e., 19 is actually for '2010-06-10 14:04:48'. Anyway, the issue I have right now is that after the insert, the fieldDt actually has a date time value up to minutes, for example, '2010-06-10 14:04:00'. I am not sure why. I don't have permission to update or change the table with a trigger to update the field. My question is that how I can use a INSERT T-SQL to add a new row with a date time value ( SQL server's local date time) with a precision up to milliseconds?

  • In VisualStudio 2008, emacs mode - how can you enable "overwrite"?

    Using VisualStudio 2008, have emacs keyboard mapping scheme enabled. If I select text and try to paste over it, it INSERTS the new text, rather than replacing it. Also, if I select text and hit DELETE it deletes the first character AFTER the selected text (just as if I didn't have any text selected). Does anyone know how to fix this so that I get the standard windows behavior. That is: If I select text and try to paste over it, it replaces the selected text with what I pasted in. If I select text and hit the DELETE key, it actually deletes the text I have selected Thanks! Abby

  • Where does IE store the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie?

    I am a bit baffled here; using IE7, ASP.NET 2.0 and Cassini (the VS built-in web server; although the same thing seems to be true for "real" applications deployed in IIS) I am looking for the session-id-cookie. My test page shows a session id (by printing out Session.SessionId) and Response.Cookies.Keys contains ASP.NET_SessionId. So far so good. But I cannot find the cookie in IEs cookie-store! Nor does "remove all cookies" reset the session (as it does in FF)... So where - I am tempted to write that four letter word - does IE store that bloody cookie? Or am I missing something? By the way there is no hidden field with a session id either, as far as I can see. If I check in FF there is a cookie called ASP.NET_SessionId as I would expect. And as mentioned above deleting that cookie does start a new session; as I would expect. Can anybody imagine what is happening here?
