• Reminder: True WCF Asynchronous Operation

  A true asynchronous service operation is not the one that returns void, but the one that is marked as IsOneWay=true using BeginX/EndX asynchronous operations (thanks Krzysztof). To support this sort of fire-and-forget invocation, Windows Communication Foundation offers one-way operations. After the client issues the call, Windows Communication Foundation generates a request message, but no correlated reply message will ever return to the client. As a result, one-way operations can't return values, and any exception thrown on the service side will not make its way to the client. One-way calls do not equate to asynchronous calls. When one-way calls reach the service, they may not be dispatched all at once and may be queued up on the service side to be dispatched one at a time, all according to the service configured concurrency mode behavior and session mode. How many messages (whether one-way or request-reply) the service is willing to queue up is a product of the configured channel and the reliability mode. If the number of queued messages has exceeded the queue's capacity, then the client will block, even when issuing a one-way call. However, once the call is queued, the client is unblocked and can continue executing while the service processes the operation in the background. This usually gives the appearance of asynchronous calls.

• MySQL – Introduction to User Defined Variables

  MySQL supports user defined variables to have some data that can be used later part of your query. You can save a value to a variable using a SELECT statement and later you can access its value. Unlike other RDBMSs, you do not need to declare the data type for a variable. The data type is automatically assumed when you assign a value. A value can be assigned to a variable using a SET command as shown below SET @server_type:='MySQL'; When you above command is executed, the value, MySQL is assigned to the variable called @server_type. Now you can use this variable in the later part of the code. Suppose if you want to display the value, you can use SELECT statement. SELECT @server_type; The result is MySQL. Once the value is assigned it remains for the entire session until changed by the later statements. So unlike SQL Server, you do not need to have this as part the execution code every time. (Because in SQL Server, the variables are execution scoped and dropped after the execution). You can give column name as below SELECT @server_type AS server_type; You can also SELECT statement to DECLARE and SELECT the values for a variable. SELECT @message:='Welcome to MySQL' AS MESSAGE; The result is Message -------- Welcome to MySQL You can make use of variables to effectively apply many logics. • Permission issues causes Unity Segmentation fault

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and I can boot to the unity-greeter and login just fine, but after login I just get a black screen with a cursor. I have tried following http://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and the manual install of the downloaded AMD drivers. All have the same affect. Also I have read Black screen after login with cursor I get a black screen after logging in ubuntu 13.04 black screen after login Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session Ubuntu 13.04 - Black screen with unresponsive cursor Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Problem - Boots into Blank Black Screen All of which were no further help then the two support articles about ATI drivers So I switched back to the default drivers and went a little further into debugging, when I do ctrl+alt+F1 and login and try unity --debug > unity_start.log then ctrl+alt+F8 the screen stays black with a cursor and when I switch back ctrl+alt+F1 the contents of the log output are http://pastebin.com/rdQG4Hb0 However when I try sudo unity --debug > unity_start_root.log then ctrl+alt+F8, unity starts and the output of the log is http://pastebin.com/Yv4RD2j7 The fact that it starts as root tells be it is either a permissions issue of some required file or there is some setting that is specific to my user that is causing the SIGSEGV. So to narrow this down I activated the guest account and tried to login and got the same black screens with only a mouse cursor, so this tells me that it is not a configuration issue, but a permissions issue, so how do I narrow down which file has the wrong permissions? Also is there anything further that may help debug this issue? Ok after a few more hours of googling I found that if I add myself to the video group I can login and see the desktop, but there are lots of other permission related issues, so I am thinking something went wonky with PolicyKit during the upgrade, is there a way to reset PolicyKit settings for a user?

• Accessing and Updating Data in ASP.NET: Filtering Data Using a CheckBoxList

  Filtering Database Data with Parameters, an earlier installment in this article series, showed how to filter the data returned by ASP.NET's data source controls. In a nutshell, the data source controls can include parameterized queries whose parameter values are defined via parameter controls. For example, the SqlDataSource can include a parameterized SelectCommand, such as: SELECT * FROM Books WHERE Price > @Price. Here, @Price is a parameter; the value for a parameter can be defined declaratively using a parameter control. ASP.NET offers a variety of parameter controls, including ones that use hard-coded values, ones that retrieve values from the querystring, and ones that retrieve values from session, and others. Perhaps the most useful parameter control is the ControlParameter, which retrieves its value from a Web control on the page. Using the ControlParameter we can filter the data returned by the data source control based on the end user's input. While the ControlParameter works well with most types of Web controls, it does not work as expected with the CheckBoxList control. The ControlParameter is designed to retrieve a single property value from the specified Web control, but the CheckBoxList control does not have a property that returns all of the values of its selected items in a form that the CheckBoxList control can use. Moreover, if you are using the selected CheckBoxList items to query a database you'll quickly find that SQL does not offer out of the box functionality for filtering results based on a user-supplied list of filter criteria. The good news is that with a little bit of effort it is possible to filter data based on the end user's selections in a CheckBoxList control. This article starts with a look at how to get SQL to filter data based on a user-supplied, comma-delimited list of values. Next, it shows how to programmatically construct a comma-delimited list that represents the selected CheckBoxList values and pass that list into the SQL query.   So I was working on an intro to development demo for the Central NJ .Net User Group and I found a few kinks.  I opened up a form to custom in InfoPath and Quick Published it wouldn’t work.  I imed my InfoPath guru friend, Lori Gowin, she said try to run a regular publish.  The form was still not showing up in SharePoint.  I could open it and it knew my changes, but it would just not render in a browser.  So I decided to create a form from scratch without using the button customize form in the list.  That did not work, so it was google time.  Finally I found this blog post: http://qwertconsulting.wordpress.com/2009/12/22/list-form-from-infopath-2010-is-blank/.  Once I went into the configuration wizard and turned on the State Service everything worked perfectly fine.  It was great.  See I normally don’t run through the wizard and check the box to turn all the services on in SharePoint.  I usually like a leaner environment plus I want to learn how everything works.  So I guess most people had no idea what was going on in the background.  To get InfoPath to work you need the session state.  It’s doing some type of caching in the browser.  Very neat stuff.  I hope this helps one of you out there some day. • Java crashes on lubuntu but not Ubuntu

  I have lubuntu and Ubuntu partitions on my drive. I've been having an interesting time with the new lubuntu partition. I've encountered strange things with the game Minecraft, Java and graphics drivers on the lubuntu partition. Firstly, I'll say that Minecraft runs fine at about 60fps on the Ubuntu partition with the latest drivers. (This is lower than it should be as it's a pretty decent graphics card [Radeon HD 5700].) When I first started lubuntu, I tried to see if I could get Minecraft running on Java. Java crashed when loading the main game graphics on both Sun and OpenJDK without proprietary drivers. Java also crashed on both Javas with proprietary drivers after the necessary restart. However, after disabling (with 'remove' button) the proprietary drivers with jockey-gtk in the session after the restart to install the drivers, Minecraft ran very well at ~120fps. This didn't continue after another restart, when it ran at 9fps. After failing thereafter on lubuntu to get it working at 15fps, I tried reinstalling lubuntu and installed the exact same driver (the latest one, not the one appearing on jockey) and Java versions as on Ubuntu. That is, now Ubuntu and lubuntu have the same graphics driver and Java version. Minecraft still crashes in the same way on lubuntu but works fine on Ubuntu. I would appreciate any explanation for any of these events. What differences between lubuntu and Ubuntu could cause this? Edit: After installing the 32bit driver version on lubuntu (seeing as lubuntu is 32bit), I have Java "working" for Minecraft. However, it is at <15fps again and it can't log in to servers as it takes too long.

• Better Embedded 2013

Visiting Florence is always a pleasure, but having a chance to attend to such an interesting conference and to meet Marco Dal Pino, Paolo Patierno, Mirco Vanini and many other embedded developers made those two days an experience to be remembered. I did two sessions, one on Windows Embedded Standard and “PCs” usage in the embedded world and another one on Android for Embedded devices, you can find the slides on the better embedded website: www.betterembedded.it. You can also find slides for many other interesting session, ranging from the .NET microframework to Linux Embedded, from QT Quick to software licenses. Packing many different resources about embedded systems in a conference was not easy but the result is a very nice mix of contents ranging from firmware development to cloud-based systems. This is a great way to have an overview of what’s new or interesting in embedded systems and to get great ideas about how to build your new device. • Ubuntu 11.10 is falling back to Unity 2D. How to get back to Unity 3D?

  It happened some minutes ago when I plugged my secondary monitor and my graphical interface simply crashed. So I had to restart my session. Since the crash Ubuntu insists to use Unity2D fall back instead of the default one. I used to plug the secondary monitor everyday when at home and nothing bad happened before. This 2D version of the GUI is ugly and has a lot of problems. • Twin Cities Code Camp 8 Retrospective

  I just got back (a few hours ago) from Minneapolis, where I was speaking at the Twin Cities Code Camp 8. I’d never been to a Twin Cities Code Camp, and I have always heard such great things, so I submitted and got accepted to speak. The conference (what I got to see) was great. My talk was pretty short on people, but there are many reasons for that. First, I spoke opposite Donn Felker (speaking about developing for Android) and Keith Dahlby (speaking about Dynamic .NET). So of course, my talk is going to be empty. How could I compete with that? Plus, my talk was about software process improvement, specifically about how our process has evolved. Maybe not the smartest idea to submit to talk about software process at a developer’s conference. The people who DID attend however, seemed to really enjoy the talk. There was good interaction and good, thoughtful questions. So the attendees seemed engaged. I actually did get a chance to go to one session. I went and saw Javier Lozano talk about Open source tools for ASP.NET MVC. I am hip-deep in MVC stuff right now and getting up to speed on MVC 2 as well. I learned about MVC Turbine, Javier’s Open Source project. I will definitely be adding it to my MVC arsenal. Thanks Javier! I did forget my AC adapter for my laptop and got a little lost in Minneapolis on my way to get one from MicroCenter Saturday morning, but other than that, it was a great trip. It’s a long drive, but seeing all the guys and getting two Nut & Honey rolls from Roly Poly in Eden Prarie for lunch on Saturday made the trip totally worth it. I look forward to seeing what Jason & Chris come up with for next year! Thanks for having me guys!

• Name disappeared from main menu bar

  I have Ubuntu 10.4. I installed a nvidia gigabyte geforce 210 graphic card because the intel graphic card is a disaster. I use a terminal and basic, fiddly adjustments were successfully made to get the window to fit the screen. The new card is a roaring success. Nothing freezes and visuals can be set to Extra. But, from that point on, my main menu bar misbehaved and icons kept disappearing. Logon and logoff usually helped. R-E-I-S-U-B was needed when the actual logoff icon disappeared. My full name, Anthony Burman, appeared in the main menu bar. It was alonside Wanda, the Fish , the Oracle.... My name disappeared and I cannot get it back. It can't be found anywhere in the 'add to panel' section. Indicator applet session also can't bring it back. How do i re-insert my name on the toolbar? Thanks, Ant.

• Cannot get webapps to work after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04. But I cannot use WebApps. In fact there is no sign of them anywhere. Firefox and Chromium are not prompting for integration. I tried re-installing both browsers/webapps plugin of each, but no luck. Out of curiousity, I tried to install unity-webapps-preview through terminal, apt-get reported that this operation is going to need 127mb. After installation, restarting session, nothing. I re-ran the unity-webapp-preview in terminal and SURPRISINGLY it again asked me that this operation is going to need 58mb. After Installation, nothing. Firefox is showing the unity-webapp plugin in Extensions but in Preferences there is noting like Unity settings or options for exceptions in General tab (as I seen in some threads). Chromium is not even showing the plugin in Extensions nor in the settings. Really need help. I know there is a reported bug but it is mostly about the complains that the webapps are not working as they should but in my case they don't seem to exist.
