• How to configure Linux to open files by extension?

  The various Linux's desktops open files according to their mime type. This is a very nice feature but I also need to open them by extension (as with Windows). For instance, I want to open every xxxxx.vnc files with a specific program when I double-click on them. I use xfce but I don't think it differs from Gnome or KDE because all of them use the same configuration files (defaults.list and mimeapps.list). If possible the settings are user specific, not system wide. I've found some very poor informations about that, and all are system wide, so may be wiped out by some updates.

• mytop: least privileges required to run it?

  What is the minimum set of privileges that mytop requires in order to work, without actually requiring super-user privileges. I feel uncomfortable with the fact that I have to save the password in the configuration file (the less desirable alternative would be the command line), so I want to minimize the impact, should someone get to see the password. The password will still be used only in this one place, but I would prefer to not give unneeded privileges to the (MySQL) user mytop is running as. The mytop documentation doesn't mention any of that and all examples assume root.

  I have a remote dedicated server running CentOS 6.2 x64bit with ISPConfig3. This is a brand new install. Server Purpose: Basic LAMP Web Hosting with PureFTPD, BIND, CLAMAV, RKHunter. Any advice or link to a guide which will clearly explain how to optimize the CSF+LFD configuration is greatly appreciated. I am not exactly sure on where to start what I shouldn't loosen the restrictions on.   Distro: Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server 32-bit Server client: vsftpd 2.3.5 (from default "main" repository) Problem: Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 12.04 (nothing changed on client-side), vsftp has refused to make chroot-jails with the "chroot_local_user" directive on FTP(e/i)S-connections. Try to connect with an FTP user client and upload some files. With my setup, the above listed config works well at this point. Edit /etc/vsftpd.conf and set chroot_local_user= to YES. Make sure that chroot_list_enable= and/or chroot_list_file= are not set. Comment them out if they are. Save and exit. Run sudo restart vsftpd (or sudo service vsftpd restart if you like) in a terminal. Try to connect with an FTP user client. You should see a message more or less like this: GnuTLS error -15: An unexpected TLS packet was received. This is an issue for me, as I do not want FTP-sessions to be able to list files outside the user's home folder. I have checked with several client-side apps, and I get the same results with every one of them. Filezilla is not so good regarding cipher methods nowadays, but as I am able to make an FTP(e)s-connection over TLS (as long as chroot'ing is disabled and ssl_ciphers is set to HIGH) I have a feeling ciphers are not the issue this time, and that I won't find the answer by tweaking configs on the client side. My vsftpd.log stays empty, even though debug_ssl and log_ftp_protocol are enabled, so no info there either.

• Auto-detect proxy settings on network

  I am having problems trying to run web browser software on the local network through the proxy. When running off the profile drive which is on a network share, the system is unable to auto-detect proxy settings. When running off the local C drive, the browsers are able to correctly autodetect the settings. The error from the browser is about it being unable to fetch the proxy configuration file. Is this some form of authentication preventing it retreiving the settings when running of the network location? PS. Would this be better off on superuser?

Tutorials often say to use ntsec or ntsec tty here but those options are removed from the latest version of OpenSSH. I've tried using them anyway and the result is the same. The file /var/log/sshd.log is empty. If I try just running the command /usr/sbin/sshd I get the output /var/empty must be owned by root and not group or world-writable.. The /var/empty directory has the following permissions: drwxr-xr-x+ 1 cyg_server root 0 May 29 15:28 empty. Google searches on this error did not turn up any working fixes. One person seems to have solved it by using the command chown SYSTEM /var/empty but that did not fix it in my case.

• Apache mod_rewrite for multiple domains to SSL

  Hi there, I'm running a web service that will allow people to create their own "instances" of my application, running under their own domain. These people will create an A record to forward a subdomain of their main domain to my server. The problem is that my server runs everything under SSL. So in my configuration for port 80, I have the following: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mydomain.com ServerAlias www.mydomain.com RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule /(.*) https://mydomain.com/$1 [R=301] </VirtualHost> This has worked well to forward all requests from the http: to https: domain. But as I said, I now need to let any domain automatically forward to the secure version of itself. Is there a rewrite rule that will let me take the incoming domain and rewrite it to the https version of same? So that the following matches would occur: http://some.otherdomain.com -> https://some.otherdomain.com http://evenanotherdomain.com -> https://evenanotherdomain.com Thanks for your help! • Poor System performance on my machine running Ubuntu 12.04(Beta 2 updated to the present moment)

  Why is it that my system dies when multitasking(it is happening from 11.10) on Ubuntu11.10(Unity), Kubuntu 11.10(KDE) and Deepin Linux which is based on 11.10(Gnome-Shell) The thing is that I thought with 12.04 I would get performance like I used to get on 11.04 on which everything used to run fine without any lag or hiccups. The same lagging(Browser starts to stutter, increased delay in the launching of dash and applications)is happening on 12.04 http://i.imgur.com/YChKB.png and http://i.imgur.com/uyXLA.png . I believe that my system configuration is sufficient for running Ubuntu as you can check here http://paste.ubuntu.com/929734/ . I had the Google voice and chat plugin installed on 12.04 so someone suggested that I should remove that and see if the performance improves but no such respite(I am having this on multiple operating system based on Ubuntu 11.10 as I have mentioned above). On a friends suggestion Ran Memory Test through Partition Magic and my system passed that fine. One thing more that I would like to know is that why when I have 2Gb Ram and 2.1GB swap does my system starts lag and run poorly when Ram consumption goes 500+. If you require anymore information I will gladly provide it.

Very important to say that on windows 7 I have this working. May be this is because I don't see ASP.NET area in management window? • What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

  I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients. • Configure Nagios To Alert Depending On Host Group That Service Alert Originates From

  So my setup: Services are shared between all hosts (CPU/RAM/Disk/Services). Hosts are split into two main groups: "Production" and "Development". We have two contact groups: "Production" and "Development". Lets say my development SQL server runs low on RAM, I want it to only alert those in "Development" contact group (this service is of course assigned to a host in the "Development" host group, using the shared RAM monitoring service). I'm pretty much stumped on this... I can't configure it at the service level (they're shared there), and I can't seem to get escalations to do it for me either... Do I need to use service groups along with escalations and bite the bullet on building that list? Or am I missing something stupidly simple? I'm using Centreon for configuration if that helps.

• Why would the IIS UrlRewrite module continue redirecting requests after the rule is removed?

  Our application uses the IIS UrlRewrite module to temporarily redirect requests during upgrades to a maintenance site. We have seen a few instances where even though the redirect rule has been removed, the server continues to redirect all requests according to the removed rule. There does not seem to be any pattern with this, and has only occurred once or twice. We have taken the following steps to try and determine the cause of this behavior. Verified that the original rule was a 307 temporary redirect Requested the application from machines that had never requested it before Used a different browser Added and removed a dummy rule from the IIS management console Checked the http kernel cache using netsh http show cachestate Modified the applicationHost.config file by hand (the rule was not still in the file, we just added a superfluous space) In the past when this has happened, we have been able to restart IIS and it solves the problem but that is not always an option and we really want to figure out what the root cause is. How or why would UrlRewrite be caching the response and not responding to configuration changes?

  I am trying to get Synergy up and running from a new Windows 7 computer, to an XP computer. The Synergy installations seemed to go fine. I configured each to start on start-up, which they seem to, but the client won't connect. I get repeated: "server refused client with our name" messages in the log output. The Synergy FAQ says to "Add the client to the server's configuration file." But I can't seem to find an instruction set on how to do this. I've looked and looked, but I'm lost...

• How do I configure multiple domain names on my IIS server?

  We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

  I found this in the Event Viewer logs: The description for Event ID 11 from source RAMDiskVE cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. Which doesn't say much. The details don't reveal much more: Failed to read configuration information from registry. 0000000002002C00000000000B0007C0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 So my question is, what is RAMDiskVE and what device is it for? Basically I'm trying to rule out hardware but I have no idea what's failing...

• Any reason to prefer video adapter with two DVI ports versus one DVI/one VGA for DVI/VGA optional dual monitors?

  I am looking to buy a new video card to power two identical monitors. The monitors came with both DVI and VGA cables, so I am able to use either. My current video card has two DVI ports on the back, so I have both monitors connected via DVI at present. I have noticed that many modern video cards have a DVI/VGA/HDMI port trio and that cards with two DVI ports seem somewhat more scarce. Essentially, I have more options available to me for purchasing cards with a DVI/VGA/HDMI trio than with a DVI/DVI duo. My question is, are there any sound reasons to go to the extra effort of finding a card with two DVI ports versus simply running one of my monitors through a DVI and one through a VGA on a DVI/VGA/HDMI card? Quality differences? Any variety of image asymmetry? Configuration difficulties (I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu)? Anything else?

• How to make ClearType looks ok even with large fonts

  I discovered that on large/huge fonts ClearType does have a negative impact. Just take a look at http://patterns.dataincubator.org/book/ page (check title with huge fonts versus normal text). If you are on Windows 7 you can use Win+Plus/Minus to zoom in/out. I'm looking for a configuration that would make both small fonts and large fonts look well. The system is Windows 7 but I suppose you could replicate the problem on Vista and even XP if you activate ClearType. Current results: ClearType on and tunned - small fonts looking good and large one looking bad ClearType off - small fonts looking bad and large one looking ok (smoothed)

  I'm trying to install memcache on MAMP but I get the warning below, and when I continue it seems to complete properly. I add the line extension=memcache.so to the php.ini and restart MAMP but phpinfo() doesn't list the memcache extension. $ ./pecl install memcache downloading memcache-2.2.5.tgz ... • Redmine on Redhat/CentOS 5 Without using virtual hosts

  I've have followed all the steps to install Redmine on CentOS 5, except for the Apache part: http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/HowTo_install_Redmine_on_CentOS_5 I do not want to configure a virtualhost as we are not using virtual hosts. Can I configure Redmine to run with http://hostname/redmine? Apparently it doesn't work for my case. Redmine was extracted in to the webserver document root /var/www/html/ called /var/www/html/redmine What I did was added a redmine.conf to /etc/httpd/conf.d/ with the following configuration and restarted the server: <Location "/redmine"> Options Indexes ExecCGI FollowSymLinks -MultiViews Order allow,deny Allow from all AllowOverride all PassengerEnabled On RailsBaseURI /var/www/html/redmine RailsEnv production </Location> now i got this error Further information about the error may have been written to the application's log file.
