• Do different operating systems have different read and write speeds?

  If I have two different operating systems, such as Windows 8 and Ubuntu, running on the same hardware, will the two operating systems have different read and write speeds? My guess is that there would be minimal difference between operating systems and read and write speeds to the hard disk since the major limited factor is seeking; however, different operating systems may use different file systems in order to attempt to reduce seek time in the hard disk. Likewise, I'm sure that modern operating systems will not actually write directly to the hard disk, and instead will just have it in memory and marked with a dirty bit. Are there any studies that show differences in read and write speeds between OSs? Or would the file system being used by the OS matter more than the OS itself?

• Install OS X 10.5 on Intel 1GB Macbook

  I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook that previously had 10.4 on it. i am getting an error after selecting the language. What could be causing a box on the screen that says: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. It's an Intel MacBook with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 80GB hard drive. It has been formatted now, so there's no going back. According to the System Profiler on the 10.5 boot CD, the MacBook is version MacBook2,1. Thanks!

• Where are my Tomcat Logs?

  Hi All, I installed Tomcat6 on a Ubuntu 9.04 server using apt-get install tomcat6. I uploaded a WAR using the manager interface and tried to start the application but get a pretty generic error on the Web interface saying it couldn't be started. I am trying to find the logs to determine why my war won't start (I suspect low memory as i'm on a small VPS) but I don't know where they are. /var/lib/tomcat6/logs is empty. My Tomcat splash page reliably informs me of the following; Tomcat is installed with CATALINA_HOME in /usr/share/tomcat6 CATALINA_BASE in /var/lib/tomcat6, following the rules from /usr/share/doc/tomcat6-common/RUNNING.txt.gz.   I have an Nginx and Passenger setup that is proving problematic. At relatively low loads the server seems to get backed up and start churning results like this into the error.log: connect() to unix:/passenger_helper_server failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) while connecting to upstream My passenger setup is: passenger_min_instances 2; passenger_pool_idle_time 1200; passenger_max_pool_size 20; I have done some digging, and it looks like the CPU gets pegged. Memory usage seems fine passenger_memory_stats shows at most about 700MB being used, but CPU approaches 100%. is this enough to cause this type of error? Should i bring the pool size down? Are there other configuration settings I should be looking at? • Why are they putting "processors" on hard drives?

  What does it mean when they have a processor on the hard drive, how does it work, and what benfit does it have? I don't understand - the CPU is the processor and the hard drive transfers it's contents to RAM. Do have additional processors, preprocess the data some how? Here's some examples Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB "Dual processor speed" NETGEAR ReadyNAS 312 2-Bay Diskless Network Attached Storage "Dual-core Intel 2.1GHz processor and 2GB on-board memory" and routers now have processors too, why's that nescecary? I guess it sort of makes sense - some logic needs to happen for the packets to be read in to know which ports to send them out on, but why did old routers not need them? • Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86.   I have some old applications which are running on SCO Open Server 5.0.5, and i would love to move them to SCO Open Server 5.0.7 and on modern hardware(servers), currently am running SCO on old IBM PL 300 personal computer, on 92MB Memory, one processor, and it has been serving the clients pretty well. Now i have New Modern IBM xseries Servers and i would love to migrate the same applications to those new servers. Problem is, SCO 5.0.5 is unable to detect some of the hardware components in the new servers. I read somewhere that SCO 5.0.7 is able to detect the newer hardware even the USB ports etc. Is there anyone running SCO Openserver out there, and on what hardware architecture are they running on? • Keeps "SSH timeout" error in our AWS instance- how do i diagnose?

  I am befuddled by this error. We keep failing to SSH into our AWS instance, whether it is is deployment or via console. I have tried rebooting a few times, but it does not seem to be helping. • spoolsv.exe consumes all CPU and RAM resources

  Consider a Windows 7 x64 installation with 2 printers installed. The system has 8GB installed RAM. One printer is a Brother laser MFC-8220 Printer via TCP/IP, and the other is a CutePDF printer. Problem: the spoolsv.exe regularly eats obscene amount of memory and CPU when the machine is idle. Usually the device is powered off. Turning it on has no effect on the RAM or CPU usage. The first consideration was that perhaps a print job has previously been sent to the Brother, but the queues are empty, and no jobs are waiting. These screenshots do not show, but regularly the spoolsv service will consume all 8GB and climb to use 95-100% of the CPU. The two printers - a Brother and the CutePDF printer both have 0 documents in their respective queues. Question: what measures can I take to ensure the spoolsv.exe doesn't consume inappropriate amounts of CPU and RAM?

• PHP crashing on occasion - APC error?

• Laptop as server [closed]

  My client wants to use a cheap AMD E-300 ,5400 rpm disk,4gb memory laptop as a POS server and music player at the same time with dual screen. I couldnt convince him that this wouldnt be a good choice. The applications are a database a music player ,and the .net 4 application. I am afraid of performance issues. However the reasons for this choice is that laptop takes not much space ,easy dual screen for music player and application ,can easilly be replaced and that it will last forever as none of his laptops are ever broken. I believe that this is a good idea but i feel thats something wrong there. Do you believe that is an ok choice?

• Terribly slow Apache2 on VM Virtualbox

  I just launched VM Virtualbox with guest Ubuntu Server on host Windows 8. Both 64bit. Everything works perfectly fine. Maybe it's because I'm not using any X... Htop shows ~25% of memory usage, everything is fine, but not Apache2. Normally it's fine, but when I send request from my browser on host (networking mode set to Bridge mode), Apache2 is turning into 1-minute-long loading process with 100% CPU time. Any ideas how to debug it? Any ideas about solving this throat problem?

• Increase application performance on Amazon AWS

  I've got a client with an MVC v1 (.NET) application running on a micro instance. On this instance, I've got .NET, IIS 7.5, and MS SQL Server 2008 running to handle the application. The client has reported that it is taking nearly 10 seconds to process each request. Even loading the initial login page takes about that long, then logging in takes that long, etc etc. The currently running instance specs are as follows: 615 MB RAM Intel Xenon CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz 2.78 GHz 64-Bit Is the memory availability the issue? or is it the processing power? I forsee two options: Change to a larget instance Set up a 2-tier architecture with two micro instances Which of these will give the application better performance? Thanks in advance.

• Zabbix - Some of the monitored items don't refreh

  I'm experiencing a strange issue with Zabbix monitoring a MySQL server. Most of the data from the server such as MySQL queries per second and MySQL uptime , Buffers memory etc. update nicely while some data like CPU iowait time (avg1) , Host local time ,MySQL number of threads and other items which were monitored in the past has last check time of about a week ago. I can't find any logic in this, for example Mysql number of threads and Mysql queries per second are obtained in a similar way so it does not make sense one of them is monitored and one is not. Please help- how can I fix this? Update - I used zabbix_get from the zabbix server to check one of the items on the zabbix client and it works so the problem must be on the zabbix server side

• Network attached external harddrive from another computer.

  I have a server that is setup in raid. It is on the same network as my main computer. I would like to have some of the memory on my server to act as a network attached drive on my main computer. Basically, I want it to be a new data drive (similar two C:\, but 2nd drives are mostly E:). That way, I can reformat my main computer without loosing any important data. And the data that is saved (on server E:\ drive) is secured via raid mirroring.

  I have a reporting setup with SSRS on our sql server 2005 database. Because sql server 2008 is not supported by the main program which populates our database we are stuck with 2005 on our prod database. Unfortunately when I run our weekly check reports the web interface constantly times out because the server cant do the conversion to PDF. I've read that sql server 2008's SSRS is ALOT better with memory management. I was wondering if I can do some kind transact log shipping subscription publication from 2005 to 2008? Am I chasing a dream here. Currently I have to open up the ssrs project in visual studio and run the reports inside because it doesn't ever time out when doing the pdf conversion, only times out if I try to run it through the ssis web interface.

• How to change the fonts used in Foxit Reader?

  I really want to use Foxit Reader as my default PDF reader for its Tab Interface, and low memory footprint. Having tried mutiple times over the years the only thing that is stopping me are the Fonts. PDF in Adobe Reader looks Regular, but PDF Rendered in Foxit Looks Ugly. Would this solution works in Chrome as well? Since i record Chrome is using Foxit Reader as its embedded PDF engine. And is there any reasons why Fonts are used differently in Adobe and Foxit Reader?

  I'd like to install solr 3. It will accept connections only locally. I read that jetty takes less memory than tomcat. I have Ubuntu 11.10 server. There is no clear tutorial about it anywhere on the internet. Most of them are old and talking about other combinations. I tried some of them, but didn't succeed in making it work. I'd prefer using packages with apt-get, but if the packages are not updated, I may install each part manually. Also, some tutorials say to install openjdk-6-jdk and other sun-java6-jdk. • Hardware Raid Card Reviews with SSDs

  Yes I realize there are several questions about this but none of them seem to have the answer I'm looking for. I have two SSDs and am looking to buy a purely hardware raid card for them; however, I can't seem to find any reviews that have specifically tested hardware raid cards with SSDs rather than testing the SSDs themselves. I'm looking for a review because I'm assuming that for example: 100% gain with two 7200rpm drives doesn't necessarily mean 100% gain with a pair of SSDs, since there would be higher speeds, meaning more throughput, meaning more processor/memory usage for the card. If this assumption is wrong then that's fantastic; however if it's true, I am quite sad and would really appreciate any advice or reviews you can find. Thanks in advance!

• Change YYYY-MM-DD to YYYYMMDD everywhere in file

  I can't just delete all of the hyphens, because elsewhere they are used as minus signs. I can find these dates with [0-9]\{4\}-[0-9]\{2\}-[0-9]\{2\} but I can't figure out how to keep those three different digit wildcards in memory. My attempts end up replacing the dates with the search string (e.g., :%s/[0-9]\{4\}-[0-9]\{2\}-[0-9]\{2\}/[0-9]\{4\}[0-9]\{2\}[0-9]\{2\}/g). Any ideas? If there's a command line solution, I'd love to learn that, too. Thanks!
