  • The same C# code produces different output in Visio Professional and Premium

    I have built a simple conversion Add In, but its behavior is unfortunately different with the different Visio Editions (Visio 2010 Professional and Visio 2010 Premium). The Add In takes a Process-Diagram created with Shapes from Stencil_1.vss and creates a new slightly different Process-Diagram with Shapes from Stencil_2.vsd. It loops through a Visio page and for each shape founded creates a new shapes from new master shape (from Stencil_2.vsd) and drop it into the new page. Geometry, captions etc. are the same, only the shape-appearance is changed. Below is the source diagram: When I run the code into Visio 2010 Professional the swimlane shapes are drawn correctly. When I run the same code from Visio Premium the swimlane appearance and layout are mismatched: Both times i drop the SAME Shape("Swimlane" from the same stencil) into the Page with the SAME Code fragment: Visio.Master vm = swimlane_stencil.Masters.get_ItemU(@"Swimlane"); Visio.Shape TargetShape = targetPage.Drop(vm, shape_x, shape_y); How could I ensure, that the code produces any time the same (correct) output? Must I disable any (premium)features in the swimlane-shapesheet?

  • Win 2008 Server configuration

    Let me preface my question by saying I'm a novice in regards to server configuration. It's been 12+ years since I've attempted this. What we (our small office) are trying to achieve is to setup a Win 2008 server (located in a home) in a home network configuration (basic wireless router w/DHCP) that we (the office) can VPN to from our office. I have installed the software, installed DHCP, removed DHCP from the router, set the scope for 100 IPs and am now looking for information as to where I go from here? I believe I need to configure DNS and possibly set up static routes on the router for the home devices that need internet? The wireless clients are not receiving IPs is the current issue that I'd like to tackle. Also, would it be feasible to use the router's DHCP to assign IPs rather than having the server do it? If so, what would be the most direct way to accomplish this? I appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks

  • Parsing localized date strings in PHP

    Hi, I have some code (it's part of a wordpress plugin) which takes a text string, and the format specifier given to date(), and attempts to parse it into an array containing hour, minute, second, day, month, year. Currently, I use the following code (note that strtotime is horribly unreliable with things like 01/02/03) // $format contains the string originally given to date(), and $content is the rendered string if (function_exists('date_parse_from_format')) { $content_parsed = date_parse_from_format($format, $content); } else { $content = preg_replace("([0-9]st|nd|rd|th)","\\1",$content); $content_parsed = strptime($content, dateFormatToStrftime($format)); $content_parsed['hour']=$content_parsed['tm_hour']; $content_parsed['minute']=$content_parsed['tm_min']; $content_parsed['day']=$content_parsed['tm_mday']; $content_parsed['month']=$content_parsed['tm_mon'] + 1; $content_parsed['year']=$content_parsed['tm_year'] + 1900; } This actually works fairly well, and seems to handle every combination I've thrown at it. However, recently someone gave me 24 ??????, 2010. This is Russian for November 24, 2010 [the date format was j F, Y], and it is parsed as year = 2010, month = null, day = 24. Are there any functions that I can use that know how to translate both November and ?????? into 11? EDIT: Running print_r(setlocale(LC_ALL, 0)); returns C. Switching back to strptime() seems to fix the problem, but the docs warn: Internally, this function calls the strptime() function provided by the system's C library. This function can exhibit noticeably different behaviour across different operating systems. The use of date_parse_from_format(), which does not suffer from these issues, is recommended on PHP 5.3.0 and later. Is date_parse_from_format() the correct API, and if so, how do I get it to recognize the language?

    I was attempting to install Visual Studio 2012 Express Version on windows 7, but got the following error. The error talks about some Interop Assem, which I believe is related to Microsoft Office. I tried to install the Interop Assem, but it seems that they cannot be installed for Starter Versions of the Microsoft Office. So, how do I go about installing Visual Studio 2012 on my Windows 7 machine, without full version of Microsoft Office installed, Or the error is related to something else. Update: I have tried to install the following Interop Assem but the installation terminates without any status.

  • Add Free Windows Live Apps to Your Website or Blog

    Would you like to use Hotmail, Office Web Apps, Messenger, and more on your website domain?  Here’s how you can add Windows Live to your website for free. Microsoft offers a popular suite of online communications products including Hotmail and Messenger.  Although Hotmail hasn’t been as popular in recent years as Gmail, it is getting a refresh this summer that might make it an even better email solution.  Additionally, the new Office Web Apps offer great compatibility with Office documents. While Skydrive offers 25Gb of free online file storage for all users, so Windows Live can make a great communications solution for your domain. Note: To signup for Windows Live for your domain, you will need to be able to add info to your WordPress.com blog or change Domain settings manually. Getting Started Open the Windows Live Custom Domains page (Link below) to get started adding Windows Live to your domain.  Your free Windows Live account will let you create up to 500 accounts, so it’s great for teams and groups that want to have customized email addresses in addition to those who just want an email account for their website. Enter your domain or subdomain you want to add to Windows Live in the box, and then select whether you want to setup Hotmail with this or now.  We want to add email to our domain, so select Set up Windows Live Hotmail for my domain and click Continue. You’ll need to sign in with a Windows Live ID to create the account, or choose to create a new Windows Live account associated with your domain.   Sign in with your Windows Live ID…this can be a Hotmail, Live Messenger, XBOX Live, Zune ID, or Microsoft.com account. Or, enter your information to create a new Windows Live ID if you selected the second option. Now, review your settings and make sure everything looks correct.  Click the I Accept button to setup your account.   Your account is now fully setup, but you’ll need to add or edit DNS information on your site.  The steps are slightly different depending if your site is hosted on WordPress.com, on your own server, or hosting service. We’ll show you how to do it on either one. First, though, note the information below this box.  You’ll see settings for your Mail setup…   Security settings…   And Messenger integration.  Make note of the settings, especially the circled ones, as we’ll need them in the next step. Integrate Windows Live with Your WordPress Blog If the domain you added to Windows Live is for your WordPress blog, login to your WordPress dashboard in a separate browser window or tab.  Click the arrow beside Upgrades, and select Domains from the menu. Click the Edit DNS link beside the domain name you’re adding to Windows Live. In the text box on this page, enter the following, replacing Your_info with your code from the Mail Setup box in your Windows Live Dashboard.  Note that this is the blurred section in our screenshots.  It should be a numerical code like 1234567890.pamx1.hotmail.com. MX 10 Your_info.pamx1.hotmail.com. TXT v=spf1 include:hotmail.com ~all CNAME Your_info domains.live.com. Click Save DNS records, and your settings are saved to WordPress.  Note that this will only integrate email with your WordPress account; you cannot integrate Messenger with a domain hosted on WordPress.com. Finally, return to your Windows Live Settings page and click Refresh.  If your settings are correct, you’ll now be ready to use Windows Live on your WordPress.com domain. Integrate Windows Live with Your Own Server If your website is hosted on your own server or hosting account, you’ll need to take a few more steps to add Windows Live to your domain.  This is fairly easy, but the steps may be different depending on your hosting company or registrar.  With some hosts, you may have to contact support to have them add the MX records for you.  Our site’s host uses the popular cPanel for website administration, so here’s how we added the MX Entries through cPanel. Login to your website’s cPanel, and select MX Entry under the Mail section. In the text box on this page, enter the following, replacing Your_info with your code from the Mail Setup box in your Windows Live Dashboard.  Note that this is the blurred section in our screenshots.  It should be a numerical code like 1234567890.pamx1.hotmail.com. MX 10 Your_info.pamx1.hotmail.com. Now, go back to your cPanel home, and select Advanced DNS Zone Editor under Domains. Here, add a TXT record with the following info: Name: yoursite.com. TTL: 3600 TXT Data: v=spf1 include:hotmail.com ~all Click Add Record and your Mail integration data is all configured. To integrate Messenger with your own domain, you’ll have to add an SRV entry to your DNS settings.  cPanel doesn’t have an option for this, so we had to contact our site’s hosting company and they added the entry for us.  Copy all of the information in the Messenger box and send it to your domain support, and they should be able to add this for you.  Alternately, if you don’t want or need Messenger, then you can simply skip this step. Once all of your settings are in place, return to your Windows Live Settings page and click Refresh.  If your settings are correct, you’ll now be ready to use Windows Live on your WordPress.com domain. Create a New Email Account On Your Domain Welcome to your new Windows Live admin page!  Now you can add email accounts so you and anyone else you want can access Hotmail and the other Windows Live apps with your domain.  Click Add to add an account. Enter an account name, which will be the email address of the account, e.g. [email protected].  Then enter the user’s name and a password for the account.  By default this will be a temporary password, and the user will have to change it on first log-in, but if you’re setting up this account for yourself, you can uncheck the box and keep this as your standard password. Now, go to www.mail.live.com, and sign in with your new email address and password.  Remember, your email address is your username previously entered followed by @yourdomain.com. To finish setting up the email account, enter your password, secret question and answer, alternate email, and location information.  Click I accept to finish setting up your new email account. Enter the characters in the Captcha to confirm you’re a human, and click Continue. Your new Hotmail inbox will now load, and you’ll have a welcome email in your inbox.  This works the same as normal Hotmail, except this time, your email address is with your own domain. You can now access any of the Windows Live services from the top-level menu. Here’s an Excel Spreadsheet open in the new Office Web Apps via SkyDrive on our new Windows Live account. If you setup Messenger access previously, you can now sign in to Windows Live Messenger using your new @yourdomain.com account as well. Important Links Accessing your Windows Live accounts is easy.  Simply go to any Windows Live site, such as www.hotmail.com or www.skydrive.com, and sign in with your new Windows Live ID from your domain as normal.  You don’t need a special address to access your account; it works just like the standard public Hotmail accounts. To administer your Windows Live for your domain, go to https://domains.live.com/ and sign in with the Windows Live ID you used to create the account.  Here you can add more users, change settings, and view usage details for the Windows Live accounts on your domain. Conclusion Windows Live is easy to add to your domain, and lets you create up to 500 email address for it.  With the upcoming updates to Hotmail and Office Web Apps coming this summer, this can be a nice way to make your domain even more useful.  And with 500 email accounts, you can easily let your team take advantage of your unique address as well.     Working for a big company I enjoy all the Microsoft tools I can consume. I also have the infrastructure to support my development and team communication.I recently helped form a small consulting team that requires the same type of resources.   • SharePoint Apps and Windows Azure

    Last Monday I had an opportunity to present as part of the keynote of this year’s SharePoint Conference.  My segment of the keynote covered the new SharePoint Cloud App Model we are introducing as part of the upcoming SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 releases.  This new app model for SharePoint is additive to the full trust solutions developers write today, and is built around three core tenants: Simplifying the development model and making it consistent between the on-premises version of SharePoint and SharePoint Online provided with Office 365. Making the execution model loosely coupled – and enabling developers to build apps and write code that can run outside of the core SharePoint service. This makes it easy to deploy SharePoint apps using Windows Azure, and avoid having to worry about breaking SharePoint and the apps within it when something is upgraded.  This new loosely coupled model also enables developers to write SharePoint applications that can leverage the full capabilities of the .NET Framework – including ASP.NET Web Forms 4.5, ASP.NET MVC 4, ASP.NET Web API, EF 5, Async, and more. Implementing this loosely coupled model using standard web protocols – like OAuth, JSON, and REST APIs – that enable developers to re-use skills and tools, and easily integrate SharePoint with Web and Mobile application architectures. A video of my talk + demos is now available to watch online: In the talk I walked through building an app from scratch – it showed off how easy it is to build solutions using new SharePoint application, and highlighted a web + workflow + mobile scenario that integrates SharePoint with code hosted on Windows Azure (all built using Visual Studio 2012 and ASP.NET 4.5 – including MVC and Web API).     As a programmer who work in a company whose vision is to make paperless office possible, is there any way I can work effectively while using less paper? I can list at least several kinds of papers I use quite often: Paper notebook, on which I do most of the pre-coding design work and ideas Books Temporary printouts of source code, though not so often (in color, with a 6 point font at 600 DPI) Sticky note, to remind myself of things that should be taken care of within a few days On the other hand, I also use a wiki and an office text editor. Once a while I would use a diagramming software to make a few flowcharts. Deeper questions: Is there a relationship between paper use and productivity? How can programmers help save the trees? Is paperless software development fundamentally different from paperless office? Related questions: Do you ever write code with pen and paper, and should we do it more often? What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? What things are essential on a programmer's desk?   • Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32

    I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two Windows XP machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VirtualBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is the following. Shared folders on ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (Even if I provide admin login details). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists.     I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional.   • Unwanted Chinese language got set in system settings

    I was discussing on the Ubuntu users list how to type in in Hindi (Indic language) in Libre Office and about a package installation problem. I have made some changes in system settings, following suggestions by some users. However, this morning when I did a reboot I am unable to see English as my default language. My system is showing some Chinese characters which I do not understand. All I wanted was to use Libre Office for a particular document in Hindi. What happened is that even Gmail is opening in Chinese. The system settings folder and others are also opening in Chinese. I am unable to use the system now. I have uploaded the snapshots here: please have a look. Upon a reboot, I was asked to rename all folders. Gmail opening in Chinese This is how menu on my system looks: half English and half Chinese Notice that in the third snapshot the calendar and menu are appearing in Chinese. I want the original US English menus and folder names back. I just wanted to type a document with Lohit Hindi font in Libre Office. I use Ubuntu 11.10. I do not use Unity, only Gnome desktop. I installed gnome-session-fallback a long time back and have been using that ever since. How do I get back to all English submenus and English folder names? I have a US English Keyboard and I use only US English. This thing which is now somehow set is unwanted.

    Follow these simple guidelines to make collaboration using SharePoint easier:1. File Name:While it is allowed to use spaces in your filename (and maybe it seems even logical to do so), don’t use them if your file will end up (or is born on) SharePoint. When you use the “download a copy” functionality, SharePoint will replace the spaces with an “_”. This might (will) result in inconsistency when you upload the “same” file again, since SharePoint will see this as a different file (since the filename is different). I recommend using a filename with Capitalization style naming guideline. For instance: the document “Overall governance model.docx” would be named “OverallGovernanceModel.docx”Use the TITLE field in the office applications to give your document a title (and subtitle and keywords, .) The title column can be used in a view in a library. You can get to the document properties by clicking on 'Office Button/Prepare/Properties'. (Office 2007). This is metadata that is stored with the document, and will remain in the document (even if you exchange this document via e-mail, via an external hard drive). The filename cannot be longer than 128 characters. (and that is IMHO far beyond reasonable) You cannot use any of these characters: ” # % & * : < > ? \ / { | } ~ 2. Versioning:SharePoint has a built-in versioning system. You can work with major (published) versions, and minor (draft) versions. Of each of these two document types, you can store a numbers of versions that are kept. Watch out, each version is saved, not only the delta between 2 versions, and this counts to your Site Collection Quota. (Example: you have a Word document with a size of 2 MB. When you keep 5 Drafts this will result in storing (and consuming) 10 MB.So, don’t call your document “NewUserAccountProcessDRAFTv1.docx”, but “NewUserAccountProcess.docx” and use versioning setting in your library.You can enable views on your library to display the version number.You can enable the version number to be displayed in a Word document.3. Use MetadataUse metadata to assign other properties to documents, so it can be easily identified, sorted- or grouped by.

    Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

  • OpenXML error “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

    From time to time I ear some people saying their new web application supports data export to Excel format. So far so good … but they don’t tell the all story … in fact almost all the times what is happening is they are exporting data to a Comma-Separated file or simply exporting GridView rendered HTML to an xls file. Ok … it works but it’s not something I would be proud of. So … yesterday I decided to take a look at the Office Open XML File Formats Specification (Microsoft Office 2007+ format) based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. I start by installing Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office and playing with some samples. Then I decided to try it on a more complex web application and the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” message start happening. Google show us that many people suffer from the same and it seems there are many reasons that can trigger this message. Some are related to the process itself, others with encodings or even styling. Well, none solved my problem and I had to dig … well not that much, I simply change the output file extension to zip and extract the zip content. Then I did the same to the output file from my first sample, compare both zip contents with SourceGear DiffMerge and found that my problem was Culture related. Yes, my complex application sets the Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture  to a non-English culture. For sample purposes I was simply using the ToString method to convert numbers and dates to a string representation but forgot that XML is culture invariant and thus using a decimal separator other than “.” will result in a deserialization problem. I solve the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” by using Convert.ToString(object, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) method instead of the ToString method. Hope this can help someone.

    Hi all, Excel 2007 Hangs When Closing via .NET How to properly clean up Excel interop objects in C# How to properly clean up interop objects in C# All of these struggle with the problem that C# does not release the Excel COM objects properly after using them. There are mainly two directions of working around this issue: Kill the Excel process when Excel is not used anymore. Take care to assign each COM object used explicitly to a variable and to Marshal.ReleaseComObject all of these. Some have stated that 2 is too tedious and there is always some uncertainty whether you forget to stick to this rule at some places in the code. Still 1 seems dirty and dangerous to me, also I could imagine that in an environment with restricted access killing processes is not allowed. So I've been thinking about solving 2 by creating another proxy object model which mimics the Excel object model (for me, it would suffice to implement the objects I actually need). The principle would look as follows: Each Excel Interop class has its proxy which wraps an object of that class. The proxy releases the COM object in its destructor. The proxy mimics the interface of the Interop class (maybe by inheriting it). Any methods that usually return another COM object return a proxy instead. The other methods simply delegate the implementation to the inner COM object.     Every few seconds our new Cisco ASA 5505 firewall is logging errors that I can't figure out with my limited Cisco experience. Severity Date Time Syslog ID Source IP Destination IP Description 3 Mar 25 2010 17:21:14 305006 8.8.8.8 regular translation creation failed for icmp src inside:10.10.0.200 dst outside:8.8.8.8 (type 3, code 3) 3 Mar 25 2010 17:18:37 305006 8.8.4.4 regular translation creation failed for icmp src inside:10.10.0.200 dst outside:8.8.4.4 (type 3, code 3) The logged inside IP is our internal DNS resolver, and the outside IP's are Google's public DNS servers. ICMP Type 3 Code 3 means "Port Unreachable" Our "outside" interface has a fixed IP and our "inside" interface is in the 10.10.0.0/16 subnet. The 'Inspect DNS' Service Policy is enabled, with the preset DNS inspection map. Furthermore there's an ACL that allows all inbound ICMP on the "outside" interface. I've spent hours trying to figure this one out, so any and all advice is welcome!
