• Google Analytics - how to track clicks on a screen?

  Can I track the click of every link, button, dropdown select, etc. on a screen and have it be tracked in Google Analytics? I want to create a page and collect data on which widget the users use most. What about AJAX stuff? What if you're using jQuery or Mootools...can you get the functions to register a fake URL with GA based on user interaction? I use to do this with Flash. Everytime you click a button, it can initiate a fake URL request. I would make urls such as ".../customize/eyes/" or ".../customize/nose", etc. Just wondering if I can do that with Javascript on the page. I've also posted at StackOverflow.

• How can I redirect any kind of access to my site to somewhere else, except for me?

  My site, www.example.com has a MyBB forum installation, and has many users constantly checking it out. I would like to make a major change to it - basically, I want to delete everything it has and start clean. However, this rebuilding process may take me hours since I need to do a lot of things. Thus, whenever an user tries to enter any part of my site (www.example.com, www.example.com/blog etc), the user will always be redirected to www.example.com/underconstruction so they can see a nice HTML site explaining the current situation. But not only that - while I am configuring my site, I need to visit it myself to make sure things do work live. So basically, it has to redirect everyone who isn't me. Is that possible in any way? I am using GoDaddy hosting.

• How hard is to be the anonymous owner of a website?

  I'd like to create a website with a very radical political message. It won't be unethical (encouraging violence, etc) but I feel the points I plan to list in it will definitely make me a lot of enemies. How hard would it be to protect my identity from anyone finding out who I am? I know domains always have a $10/year option for privatizing your registration information but is there any other protection I should think about having? Thanks!

  Have not found this in my searches on SE. I need this scenario to work: • User visits someurl.com/news/folder or someurl.com/news/somefolder/, they get redirected to someurl.com/somefolder. • If the user visits JUST someurl.com/news or /news/, they are allowed through to visit /news. Here is my current rule: RewriteRule ^news/(.*) /$1 [NC,R=301,L] How do I make it allow the second bullet point? First seems to work with no issues. Thanks all! • CSS not loading when site is viewed via Windows VPN

  Internal site has recently been redesigned, but IE8 does not seem to be loading the new css rules only when viewed via VPN. I really have no clue what to look for. I can't reproduce the problem, but it's apparently affecting client for the last month. I've suggested: Reloading IE8 Checking Internet Permissions Flushing the cache I'm not really certain what direction to search for the answer. Is it likely to be a server permissions issue? a VPN connection issue? a rare ie8 CSS bug?

But I am yet to master how I can utilize this to view usage pattern & behavior for the passed id. • Change the output of the facebook like button [migrated]

  I've tied in the code for the facebook like button from the facebook dev site (I currently use the iframe version) directly into the html of a node (or content post). I want to be able to manipulate what text is sent when someone hits the like button. you can see the site and buttons here www.masteringmoneybasics.org I've tried both the iframe and html5 versions of the button and can't see where to alter what is sent. If there is no way to directly alter what is sent, does anyone know what it looks for in content to be sent so I can structure the node correctly? If you notice, when you like the page, it doesn't get the first sentence of the content, but all content after it, and I've tried putting different content in between the two lines (in its own <p>) and it still grabs the latter. Also how it figures out which image to grab from the page? Most times it doesn't take any image, however twice it's grabbed the middle school image.

• Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website? • .htaccess mobile redirect issues

  I'm trying to set up a mobile redirect for a site with 2 subfolders, and I cannot get both to work at the same time. This is the structure of the site www.mysite.com/EN/ www.mysite.com/ES/ This is a bilingual site so each subfolder contains the files corresponding to each language version. Then I was using a 301 redirect, and setting up the index in /EN/ as the main index. Everything was getting redirected to it. I was using DirectoryIndex index.html Redirect /index.html http://www.mysite.com/EN/index.html and several Rewritecond to redirect mysite.com and old urls to the new URL. It worked fine before I decided to add a mobile version - m.mysite.com. I used the solution provided in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3680463/mobile-redirect-using-htaccess, and it redirects my mobile version properly, but now the desktop is both working. Besides, my mobile version must be bilingual as well.

  I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

• Change from static HTML file to meta tag for Google Webmaster verification

  I started verifying the server by putting a couple of static HTMLs in place. Then I noticed that Google wants you to keep these files in place. I didn't want to keep the static HTMLs in, so I want to switch to an alternative verification mechanism, and include the meta tags on the home page. Unfortunately, once your site is verified, you never seem to be able to change to an alternative way of verification. I tried removing the HTML pages. No luck whatsoever. Google still considers the site to be 'verified'. Does anybody know how to undo this? All I want to do is switch to the meta tag based method of site ownership verification.

• Using Minified Page Specific JS [migrated]

  I've been working on a rather large scale project which makes use of a number of different pages with some very specific Javascript for each of them. To lessen load times, I plan to minify it all in to one file before deploying. The problem is this: how should I avoid launching page specific JS on pages which don't require it? So far my best solution has been to wrap each page in some additional container <div id='some_page'> ...everything else... </div> and I extended jQuery so I can do something like this: // If this element exists when the DOM is ready, execute the function $('#some_page').ready(function() { ... }); Which, while kind of cool, just rubs me the wrong way.

  I need to change my payee name, I have asked in Google Adsense product forum one of top contributor replied me: "You will have to close the account & apply again with using your real payee name. That's why they specifically state that the payee name needs to match the full name on your bank account." https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/47333?hl=en This makes sense, but got few question because the support page do not have sufficient content to help me. My questions are: What happens when you close your Adsense account? If I apply again, then what will be the process to re-gain my account? I mean should I have to apply for a website again, then Adsense team will review and approve that? Is there any chance to disapprove my account? What about current check? I have two check in my hand. So, is Google will send those check again to me with my new payee name? Anyone experienced this problem? I have asked it on Google Forum but got no answer!

I have 3 products shortlisted for further review: MachForm, RackForms(formerly FormBoss) and Form Tools If anyone has used any of these products, I would appreciate your input on your experience with using these products and your recommendations. Does anyone know of other products that I must be sure to include in my review? We will eventually move over hundreds of forms to the chosen solution and I would like to make sure as much as I can that it will still be a viable solution in the coming years. Last visit: 2012/08/15 Now since I fixed this and added a 301 redirect to redirect mysite.co.za to www.mysite.co.za I would love it if google bot would come do a visit. Is there anything I can do to get this fixed?

• How do I get the root index page to redirect to a subdirectory without affecting SEO?

  I am reviving/reorganising my personal WordPress blog. It's using a URL that looks like this: http://mydomain.com/blog The webserver 301 redirects www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com. I want to use the blog subdirectory because I plan to add other parts to the site, with the blog only being one part of the site. However, at the moment there is nothing there but the blog, so I want to have the root index page redirect to the blog for the time being. I have been using this on the root index.html page to do the redirect... <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=./blog"></HEAD> ...but this seemed to have stopped the site being indexed by Google and Bing. How do I do this without affecting SEO? Also, what URL should I put in the sitemap.xml?

• Is there a tool for detecting sites using the same template?

But I would love to look at other sites which have already implemented a full website using this template. So I am looking for a tool which searches sites having a similar HTML as the demos (and therefore are probably implementing the template). • IIS and content caching

  I'm a web developer and administer of a Windows 2008R2 Could Instance with IIS 7. I recently made an update to our website, but when I revisited the website, the website was being viewed with old stylings. I did a refresh (shift + reload button in Firefox) and of course the website displayed as it should. I didn't worry about it, until my client had the same issue in Safari. So, my question, in general, is, how do I prevent this from happening again, and yet still afford some caching of our site? I noticed we did not have content expiration set up on our webserver sites, so I've set that up, but did I really need to? I've also looked at Etags, and, honestly, it's hard for me to know whether or not I should use them or not. One comment I read somewhere there isn't really any issue with Etags scenarios in IIS (even in webfarms)... but, I dunno. Anybody have any suggestions, links, info? Thanks.

Div A displays a whole wordpress post and div B displays about 15 excerpts of posts with the same tag. To get this looking nice I set the hight of div B to be the same as the hight of div A with javaScript. This means alot of post excerpts will be hidden due to overflow hidden on div B. Will Google penalise me for this, and if so, how can I make this work and still please Google? Ps. I would gladly prevent the excerpts from being indexed but the main post must be indexed Ds.

• Podcast site - Serve audio files with CDN

  I am managing a small podcast website hosted on a shared server. Currently there are only eight or nine episodes, each of which are about 50 MB, so bandwidth is not really an issue at the moment. However, looking forward, would it be feasible to use a "free" CDN like Cloudflare to serve the audio files? If so, how would I set this up? I took a quick look at it before, and it seems you have to have your whole site routed (is that the right term?) through the CDN rather than just specific files or filetypes. I'd like some clarification on this.

  I submitted my site's URL to my workplace's printed newsletter and when I get the printed version, they added a dot to the end of it. Some people will realize that the period is not a part of the url but others will not. Is there an easy way to redirect from http://example.com/home. to http://example.com/home? I have a IIS 7.0 shared hosting with GoDaddy. This means I have access to the box only through their interface so some options might be limited.
