• jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 ready for enterprise?

  I am trying to introduce RoR to my company and I have two ways of doing so in my mind: (1) rails/ibm_db2/passenger/DB2 - which is my preferable way but it is not really supported by company's infrastructure. (2) jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 - probably easier way to migrate relying on current infrastructure and java libs IF I have a proof this is an enterprise ready technology. Does anyone know if there is any prof that jruby/aciverecord-jdbc-adapter/DB2/tomcat is mature enough for production? Are there any problems I should know about during Development/Deployment/Runtime? My webapp is for a company intranet, around 200~400 active users.

A quick wikipedia search shows: RPC: Remote procedure call (RPC) is an Inter-process communication technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. Web Service: Web services are typically application programming interfaces (API) or web APIs that are accessed via Hypertext Transfer Protocol and executed on a remote system hosting the requested services. Web services tend to fall into one of two camps: Big Web Services[1] and RESTful Web Services. I am not quite clear what the real difference between the two things. It seems that one thing could belongs to RPC and is kind of web service at the same time. Is Web Service a higher level representation of RPC?

  I currently have a project that uses various DB access technologies mainly for showcasing or for demos. Currently we have: Namespace App.Data (App.Data.dll) Folder NHibernate Folder EntityFramework Folder LinqToSql The above structure is ok as we only use Sql Server as the DB. But going forward we will be including Oracle, MySql etc. So what would be a better structure with this in mind? • How to transfer large files from desktop to server ( .NET)

  I am writing a .NET 2.0 based desktop client that will send large files ( well largish under 2GB) to a server. Need to develop the server as well. Server can be on any technology It should be secure so an underlying SSL stream is needed What are my options. Any obvious caveats etc I should be aware of To my mind the simplest solution is to open a tcp\ip connection over SSL to the server and send n packets each of size M bytes and then have the server append the chunks to the file and finally send an EOF packet as well IS this horrible. Will the perf suck on the server with all these disk writes What are any other clever options. I am limited to .NET 2.0 on the client if I did move to a WCF client will it buy be something magical and cool for this scenario Thanks

The "Categories" table have 5 entries, they are: "Car", "Websites", "Technology", "Mobile Phones", and "Interest". So each time I put an entry to the "Pages" table, I need to map it to the "Categories" table so are arranged properly. I know this can be done adding button to a body and attaching a click listener but I am stumped at a point where I need to resize my iframe (UI after they click a button) and it cannot be done from internal iframe.   Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to make a generic webservice method in java like this: @WebMethod public <T extends Foo> void testGeneric(T data){ However when I try to consume this with a Java client I get an error stating: [ERROR] Schema descriptor {http://####/}testGeneric in message part "parameters" is not defined and could not be bound to Java. I know it is possible to make a method that takes a parameter such as List and this generates correctly using JAX-WS.   I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

  My name is Dimas and I work as a developer in a hospital. I've developed a web form with JQuery Mobile which is accessed from an Android tablet. It sends data (text and FILES) to the server (PHP) and it's saved in a MySQL database. This tablets are used by doctors that are visiting the patients in their homes. Some of these patients live in remote areas with very bad Internet connection, so I'm thinking on use HTML5 Offline feature to solve these situations. I started reading about it but I'm newbie with this technology. I've some questions: Do you think this is the best/easiest solution? If I could save the form data in a local sqlite storage when the tablet is offline, how I could synchronize it with the data in MySQL server when the tablet become online? Thanks

  Hi I don't know the correct words for what I'm trying to find out about and as such having a hard time googling. I want to know whether its possible with databases (technology independent but would be interested to hear whether its possible with Oracle, MySQL and Postgres) to point to specific rows instead of executing my query again. So I might initially execute a query find some rows of interest and then wish to avoid searching for them again by having a list of pointers or some other metadata which indicates the location on a database which I can go to straight away the next time I want those results. I realise there is caching on databases, but I want to keep these "pointers" else where and as such caching doesn't ultimately solve this problem. Is this just an index and I store the index and look up by this? most of my current tables don't have indexes and I don't want the speed decrease that sometimes comes with indexes. So whats the magic term I've been trying to put into google? Cheers

• Why is there no Microsoft Certified Master program targetted at developers?

  In the lower level certifications, developer technology is all over the place. At the highest level (Microsoft Certified Architect), the Solutions track appears to be a good fit for high level application designers and architects. MCA requires an MCM as a prerequisite. However, none of the MCM tracks are targeted towards development. Obviously to be a good architect you need to have knowledge of other technologies, servers, sql, messaging etc. But those seem like things that should be part of the course load, and not the sole focus. Are the lower tiers really as high as you can go for application focused professionals? For most developers, the SQL MCM seems to be the best fit. Are the MCM and MCA really targeted ad more administrators and not developers?

  Hello! We sell photoalbums which our customers create theirselves using a client album editor program (for Windows). Now we are going to develop an online program so customers could create their albums in the browser: upload photos and edit them. This is going to be a rich browser application with full graphics support. The problem is what technology to use? Our server application is build in Java and we think about Java Applets so that we could reuse some Java-code. We are also not very familiar with Flash. But some people say that Flash is preferred. Maybe there're some modern technologies now? SVG or some Google technologies (like GWT but with graphics support) or something? What do you think? Thanks in advance!

  In Oracle 10g, I have this SQL: select dog.id as dogId from CANINES dog order by dog.codename asc which returns: id -- 204 203 206 923 I want to extend this query to determine the oracle rownum of a dog.id in this resultset. I have tried select rownum from (select dog.id as dogId from CANINES dog order by dog.codename asc) where dog.id=206 But this does not work out very well (it returns 1 no matter which dog.id I match on).   I'm building a web application, call it http://mywebapp.com, where a user should be able to create a newsletter and email it to everyone in his user account's contact list. So he can check mark all his friends, select an html template, fill in the body content, and send. The only catch to this is that after the user sends the email, the recipient must NOT be allowed to trace the source of the email back to http://mywebapp.com. The reason for this condition is because the user is a "reseller" of my business who wants to appear as if he's an independent business. If liability issues arise due to the reseller's unduly usage, I do not want to be caught up in the legal issues. Hence, I do not want anything about my business or technology to be traceable back to me by newsletter recipients. What's the best way to achieve this?

  I recently attended a conference on future of the web and web development and it was a lot of focus on HTML5 and how it will impact the way we look at the web and how we will use it. The majority of the speakers meant that it will replace native application on your desktop as well as in your mobile phone. I agree that you will be able to make a lot of great stuff with the new technology take bespin for example and the <video> and <canvas> tag will be amazing, but will it completely remove the need for native applications? Is there something you cannot do with Javascript and HTML5?

  I am a UI/UX designer and I would like to create kiosk type of app that would be a product catalog (help/suggestor) for customers in a retail store using a touch screen monitor (and computer). Something as simple as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoH0u6YTTK4 This is what I would like it to do: 1st Screen (Main Menu): Pick a type of category (For example: Dog, Cat, Small Animal) 2nd Screen pick a sub-category of a main category (For example: Puppy, Adult, Senior - DOG) 3rd Screen pick a sub-category of previous sub-category (For example: Food, Healthy, Toys) Then it will display a list of all products with a picture, small description, and price. Thats it. So the point of the kiosk is to help customers find certain products that match their pet criteria. (Dog Puppy Healthy Dog Food) I am wondering what is the best solution: RIA (Flex/Air or Silveright) or flash/action script. I am not sure what is the best technology to use for the following benefits: user-experience (smoothness of touch screen actions) and fast development.

• What are the differences between MVP, Presentation Model, MVVM and MVC?

  I have a pretty good idea how each of these patterns work some of the minor differences between them, but are they really all that different from each other? It seems to me that the Presenter, Presentation Model, ViewModel and Controller are essentially the same concept. Why couldn't I classify all of these concepts as controllers? I feel like it might simplify the entire idea a great deal. Can anyone give a clear description of their differences? I want to clarify that I do understand how the patterns work, and have implemented most of them in one technology or another. What I am really looking for is someone's experience with one of these patterns, and why they would not consider their ViewModel a controller for instance.
