• Ruby on Rails vs Grails vs. Spring ROO vs. Spring App

  Hi, I'm planning on writing a simple web application that will be used by lots of users (as complicated as a simple bookmarking app) and I'm trying to decide which framework/language to use. I'm very experienced with Spring/Hibernate and Java in general but new to both Grails and RoR (and Spring ROO). The only reason I'm considering RoR is because Java hosting is MUCH more expensive than RoR hosting (which is supported by almost any hosting vendor for 5$ per month). Assuming the price wasn't an issue, which one of the frameworks/languages mentioned above would you recommend for a Java developer (who knows how to configure Spring/Hibernate etc.)? I'm afraid that by using RoR I won't be able to easily support many users who are using the website at the same time. thanks

• JTwitter OAuth signpost example

  Hey. I believe JTwitter supports OAuth to authenticate against a developer account , however i cannot get any of them working.   I wonder when to use what flavour of Python 3 super(). Help on class super in module builtins: class super(object) | super() -> same as super(__class__, <first argument>) | super(type) -> unbound super object | super(type, obj) -> bound super object; requires isinstance(obj, type) | super(type, type2) -> bound super object; requires issubclass(type2, type) Until now I've used super() only without arguments and it worked as expected (by a Java developer). Questions: What does "bound" mean in this context? What is the difference between bound and unbound super object? When to use super(type, obj) and when super(type, type2)? Would it be better to name the super class like in Mother.__init__(...)?

  Hi All, I really just wanted to thank everybody that participates in the stackoverflow community. On more than one occasion, your minds have saved me from soul-eating project managers and career-ending deadlines. The commendable awareness exhibited by contributors that their answers are studied/used as learning material by millions of developers all over the world has created a regulated trust that seemingly keeps the nonsense (and egos) at the bottom of the barrel and out of the way. As an up-and-coming developer with so much to learn, I am grateful for each and every one of their patient contributions. I wish I could come up with a catchy/funny sign-off that makes everybody feel good, but I lack the funny bone that so many of the people on this site seem to have been born with. • Differences & Similarities Between Programming Paradigms

  Hi Guys I've been working as a developer for the past 4 years, with the 4 years previous to that studying software development in college. In my 4 years in the industry I've done some work in VB6 (which was a joke), but most of it has been in C#/ASP.NET. During this time, I've moved from an "object-aware" procedural paradigm to an object-oriented paradigm. Lately I've been curious about other programming paradigms out there, so I thought I'd ask other developers their opinions on the similarities & differences between these paradigms, specifically to OOP? In OOP, I find that there's a strong focus on the relationships and logical interactions between concepts. What are the mind frames you have to be in for the other paradigms? Thanks Dave

  I'm writing a C# command line tool to fetch data from AX and to add data (create new tables) to AX. • Urlrewriting.net pages are not causing postbacks

  I'm using webforms with UrlRewriting.Net to rewrite pages, e.g. http://www.example.com/stuff.aspx?c=30 becomes http://www.example.com/stuff/30-this-stuff.aspx. It works in so far as the correct content is loading; however, none of the postbacks are working (mostly buttons on the page). If I set up a breakpoint on Page_Load, I see that IsPostBack is always false. Any ideas on how to fix this? Right now I'm just on Visual Studio 2008. EDIT: I have since switched to UrlRewriter.Net, which worked after a few tweaks (see Scott Gu's article). Besides here, I have posted my original problem to the developer's forum: if I ever get an answer, I'll post it here (unless else posts it here first).

  I am confused about the iPhone responder chain. Specifically, in the iPhone event handling guide http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhoneOSProgrammingGuide/EventHandling/EventHandling.html, we have the following: The first responder is the responder object in an application (usually a UIView object) that is designated to be the first recipient of events other than touch events. But UIView is a subclass of UIResponder. And the UIResponder class reference says this: - (BOOL)canBecomeFirstResponder Return Value YES if the receiver can become the first responder, NO otherwise. Discussion Returns NO by default. If a responder object returns YES from this method, it becomes the first responder and can receive touch events and action messages. Subclasses must override this method to be able to become first responder. I am confused by the apparent contradiction. Can anyone clear it up for me? For what it's worth, I did set up a simple view-based application, and call canBecomeFirstResponder and isFirstResponder on its view. Both returned NO.

• Running IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine

  Like everyone else ;), I need to test my code on IE6 and IE7. Now IE8 has some great tools for developer, which I'd like to use. I'd also like to start testing my code with IE8, as it will soon be released. The question is: how to run IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine. So far with IE6 and IE7 I've been using Multiple IE. But people have reported (see comments on the page linked in the previous sentence) issue with IE6 after installing IE8. Those errors are related to focus in form fields. Running IE7 wouldn't matter so much as IE8 can use the IE7 rendering engine, but we still need IE6. Any recommendation on how to IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine?

  I am rebuilding my development machine. This issue is not new to me, but I don't remember the solution. I started with VS 2008 Pro, then SQL 2008 Developer, then the SQL SP1, then VS SP1. The result is that I cannot open SSIS projects (see the error below). • Identify in a unit test if Jetbrains IntelliJ IDEA 8 or 9 is running

  I need to know, in a context of a unit test, if Jetbrains IntelliJ idea is the test initiator and if it is, which version is running (or at least if it's "9" or earlier). I don't mind doing dirty tricks (reflection, filesystem, environment...) but I do need this to work "out-of-the-box" (without each developer having to setup something special). I've tried some reflection but couldn't find a unique identifier I could latch onto. Any idea? Oh - the language is Java.

• What version of the .NET framework ahould I target?

  I'm a desktop C# developer (that is not ASP) and am wondering about version targeting for small personal projects. These are, of course, trying to reach as wide an audience as possible, and so I've been targeting .NET 3.0 (which is the latest version on a Windows Vista system without any service packs) and 2.0 (which is simply the most compatible version compatible with VS2008). Unfortunately, this precludes me from learning any technologies such as LINQ introduced post 3.0, and, with an upcoming switch to VS2010, I'm wondering if I should target the new 4.0 platform at the expense of uses without the latest and greatest, or should I just stick to trying to reach as wide a userbase as possible?

• SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127

  EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go. • Tracking downloads of your software + software CDN?

  I'm primarily a web app developer/entrepreneur, so there's a lot I don't know about the desktop software distribution process. I've been thinking about making a Mac OS X app for fun, that I would distribute for free or a really small donation, but started thinking about distribution+download analytics: a) How do you host your software? Just on your web server/amazon s3 as the CDN? b) How do you track download analytics? On the flip side, I've thought about developing a simple service that does just this: Offers CDN hosting for software downloads, analytics by version, lets users share the app upon download, and makes the whole process a lot easier for ISVs.   I am an experienced asp.net web forms developer using c# but i have never used asp.net MVC. As I am just starting out with mvc i would like to start with mvc 2. I am looking for a good intro/tutorial to help me understand the basics. I am aware of the Nerd Dinner but that is based around MVC 1. What would you guys recomend for me to get started. Should i work through the nerd dinner tutorial then once i have a good understanding of mvc then research the new features of mvc 2 or is there a similar getting started tutorial for mvc 2. Sugestions of good books to read are also welcome. In fact any advice on getting started on mvc 2 would be good.

• How To Create An ASP.NET Designer Host

  I have been asked to build an application where I can drag and drop few WebControls onto the WebPage designer surface. So far I have read some articles on .NET Framework Design-Time architecture, like, MSDN Article: Hosting WinForms Designers, Developer Function Article etc. But I can't a find a way to host WebForms designer. The only open source implementation that I could find was Mono Develop ASP.NET Visual Designer. But in mono they have used GTK# & Gecko etc to host the designer. I can't find a way to do the same using WinForms. Please suggest me what should I do. Give me some pointers. Should I go ahead and implement it using GTK# and Gecko? PS: My requirement is not very huge. I need just a way to drag and drop simple web controls and save the page.

  For some unknown reason OracleXETNSListener won't start which prevents SQL Developer from connecting to it.   HI All, Has anybody been able to extract the device tokens from the binary data that iPhone APNS feedback service returns using PHP? (http://developer.apple.com/IPhone/library/documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/RemoteNotificationsPG/CommunicatingWIthAPS/CommunicatingWIthAPS.html#//apple%5Fref/doc/uid/TP40008194-CH101-SW3) I am successfully able to extract the timestamp from the data feedback service returns, but the device token that I get after i convert to hexadecimal using the PHP's built in method bin2hex() is actually different than original device token. I am doing something silly in the conversion. Can anybody help me out if they have already implemented APNS feedback service using PHP? TIA, -Anish

I am talking about a seasoned unix user (be she/he a developer, admin, both, etc), who thinks (s)he knows something 99% of us never heard or dreamed about. Something that not only makes his/her work easier, but also is COOL and hackish. After all, vim resides in the most dark-corner-rich OS in the world, thus it should have intricacies that only a few privileged know about and want to share with us.

• Visual Studio Crashes when using Crystal Reports Group Editor

  I have a crystal report in my Visual Studio 2008 ASP.NET project, and when I choose "Group Expert" from the Crystal Reports - Report menu, Visual Studio crashes / hangs and I have to use Task Manager to close the program. This happens no matter how many times I try, and oddly enough it seems to work fine on another computer with the same project. Any help at all in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. • Documenting applications - automation / semi-automation for screenshots?

  For me one of the biggest bores of being a developer is writing user documentation. (I am referring to the stuff that gets exported into PDF files files that ship with the product, not comments in code here). The task off adding or updating new bits of text to the existing documentation is OK. However having to take screenshots of select screens can be quite a tedious process. Is there a way to automate or even semi-automate the process of taking screenshots? The main requirement is the ability to crop images such that they contain only the window, including window manager areas (such as the title bar). The secondary requirement is that any format is OK, so long as it can be exported to PDF. EDIT: Any more biters?
