• JQuery / JSON + .Net Service Layer - to WCF or Not to WCF?

  I Recently had a discussion with a colleague of mine about the pros / cons of WCF. He mentioned about how much code is generated to support WCF, and also the overhead required. It was mentioned that a simple jQuery /Ajax post to a .aspx page (or a handler for that matter) that returns JSON would work more efficiently and takes much less code to implement. I am also aware of the new WCF Web API and feel that technology may solve the "bloated"-ness required in attaining a proxy etc... by just outputting JSON. So when developing a relational DB (MSSQL) storage model, with a fairly complex Business Layer (C#) and Data Access Layer (EntityFW).. what's a good technology for creating a "service layer" which will spit out View Models represented in JSON, with a CQRS(Command Query..) approach in mind.. The app would use the service layer to support it's required UI, as well as provide an available subset of services (outputting JSON data) for service subscribers.. In other words an admin panel to support the admin UI, and service endpoints that return JSON to access the configurations made from the administration UI. What are some potential technologies to use as the transport / communication layer. I'd like to use a pure RESTful approach, but am not against doing some URL rewriting with IIS. Obviously some of the available technologies are: WCF WCF Web API (should this even be separate?) Straight request / response (query string to .aspx / handler) Would using MVC .Net solve this entire problem? maybe their single page app approach? any suggestions / feedback from developing this type of application? • Developing professionally for both iOS, Android, web - an insight

  This is not really a question on how to develop for both, I know various cross platform ways and so on. But I more want to know from developer standpoint how hard it is to basically develop iOS, Android and web apps? I am currently in my first job as a mobile/web developer. I have already developed my first iPhone/iPad app and now I have to develop the app for android because the web version I tried just didn't perform as well as needed and web databases just did not seem to make the cut. But I am not sure it's possible to be good at developing all 3 in terms of remembering all the api's etc. I wouldn't say I have an issue with the programming languages just how to use the api's for the various platforms. Also, all the other languages I look at, in my spare time, just feel like I am spreading myself to thin. Is it feasible for one person to be developing ios, android and web apps? Should I think about reducing it to iOS and web based apps? I develop everything by myself, so I have no one to discuss what the best solutions are for everything and I am just trying to workout as I go along. So any cross platform developers out there? Do companies have different teams for different platforms? Any insight would just help me get my head together. Hopefully this question makes sense.

  I just started another website and it has taken me 30mins to copy/paste my other website and delete stuff because I don't have a template. Theres lots of features I copied over that I haven't seen in libraries/templates. But I don't really know any libraries/templates. This site is ASP.NET. Some things I have is a string.format that escapes strings for HTML (so <hi> is text instead of a tag). Other features are adding or removing items in the url query, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db (I know about elmah but during development on my last site it wasn't Mono compatible), a mini AJAX library for success/fail/redirect/etc, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db and anything else I would use in every site. I don't like my (library) design because I wasn't expecting to do more then 2-3 websites and I am on my 5th. I don't know proper ASP.NET either so what is an article that explains how to make a great library/template for websites?

  I'm working at a site similar to Foursquare and Yelp, with approximately 100000 unique requests each week that generates content, growing steadily. We are currently using: Seam as Java web framework. MySQL as DB Hibernate as ORM Hibernate Search as Index EhCache for Caching. Since our site is slowly growing out of the current setup and has a lot of legacy code, it is time for us to start thinking about a major refactoring/changing setup. Web framework We are not ready to change the language but we are leaning towards Spring Web Framework, since: Seam is no more. Almost all of us have worked with Spring and liked it. DB and ORM We have done a little research and we are thinking about MongoDB. Index Do we need to have a separate Index if we use MongoDB? Cache ? So my question is basically: If you take Spring Web Framework and MongoDB into consideration, how would a good setup be for a web application that is growing and handles a lot of logged in users generating input and performing searches?

• How do I speed up XML parsing operation?

  I currently have a php script set up to do some xml parsing. Sometimes the script is set as an on page include and other times it is accessed via an ajax call. The problem is the load time for this particular page is very long. I started to think that the php I had written to find what I need in the XML was written poorly and my script is very resource intense. After much research and testing the problem is indeed not my scripting (well perhaps you could consider it a problem with my scripting), but it looks like it takes a long time to load the particular xml sources. My code is like such: $source_recent = 'my xml feed'; $source_additional = 'the other feed I need'; $xmlstr_recent = file_get_contents($source_recent); $feed_recent = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_recent); $xmlstr_additional = file_get_contents($source_additional); $feed_additional = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_additional); In all my testing, the above code is what takes the time, not the additional processing I do below. Is there anyway around this or am I at the mercy of the load time of the xml URL's? One crazy thought I had to get around it is to load the xml contents into a db every so often, then just query the db for what I need. Thoughts? Ideas?

  I write a web crawler. The crawler has 2 steps: get a html page then parse the page I want to use message queue to improve performance and throughput. I think 2 scenarios: scenario 1: structure: urlProducer -> queue1 -> urlConsumer -> queue2 -> parserConsumer urlProducer: get a target url and add it to queue1 urlConsumer: according to the job info, get the html page and add it to queue2 parserConsumer: according to the job info, parse the page scenario 2: structure: urlProducer -> queue1 -> urlConsumer parserProducer-> queue2 -> parserConsumer urlProducer : get a target url and add it to queue1 urlConsumer: according to the job info, get the html page and write it to db parserProducer: get the html page from db and add it to queue2 parserConsumer: according to the job info, parse the page There are multiple producers or consumers in each structure. scenario1 likes a chaining call. It's difficult to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. scenario2 decouples queue1 and queue2. It's easy to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. • Should I go with OpenGL to see my future in Game Development industry? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Should I continue studying OpenGL or just switch to DirectX to give me a better chance of landing a job in the game industry? I tried Google but found quite old articles, so I am in search of an answer in context to year 2012. Hi all, I don't know if you will consider this question appropriate for this community but I am constantly searching for a perfect answer. What I have seen is that most of the games that are released these days are DirectX 1x based. Except for few games like Starcraft or Diablo which don't have high end graphics are using OpenGL. So I have few questions to ask. The platforms i would like to target are PC (windows), Xbox 360 and PS3 (must). Should I go with learning OpenGL to see my future in game development industry? Or should I shift to Directx? If I learn OpenGL first, will it be difficult to learn direcx then? Which API is most suitable for indie development? Which one of the two API's are better from coder's (programmer's) point of view? Like OOP and style of coding. Is openGL being cross platform should be the only reason to choose it over Directx? Even when vendors are not providing enough stable drivers for it. Thanks in advance. I have read this post, but I have few questions.   Java EE 7 has been filed as JSR 342 in the JCP program. This JSR (Java Specification Request) will develop Java EE 7, the next version of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. It is an "umbrella JSR" because the specification includes a collection of several other JSRs. The proposal suggests the addition of two new JSRs: Concurrency Utilities for Java EE (JSR-236) and JCache (JSR-107) as well as updates to JPA, JAX-RS, JSF, Servlets, EJB, JSP, EL, JMS, JAX-WS, CDI, Bean Validation, JSR-330, JSR-250, and Java Connector Architecture. There are also two new APIs under discussion: a Java Web Sockets API and a Java JSON API. These are the new JSRs that are currently up for ballot:• JSR 342: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 Specification• JSR 340: Java Servlet 3.1 Specification• JSR 341: Expression Language 3.0• JSR 343: Java Message Service 2.0• JSR 344: JavaServer Faces 2.2All 5 JSRs are now up for Executive Committee voting with ballots closing on 14 March, and slated for inclusion in Java EE  7.  All of these JSRs are also open for Expert Group nominations.   I try to run wxCam through PulseAudio using the following command: $ padsp -d wxcam Although wxCam started ok, wxCam is been set to use xdiv format to enable sound during recording, but while recording the I get the error: Cannot open /dev/dsp.   If you use Report Builder with Reporting Services, you can use DAX queries even if the editor for Analysis Services provider does not support DAX syntax. In fact, the DMX editor that you can use in Visual Studio editor of Reporting Services (see a previous post on that), is not available in Report Builder. However, as Sagar Salvi commented in this Microsoft Connect entry, you can use the DAX query text in the query of a Dataset by using the OLE DB provider instead of the Analysis Services one. I think it’s a good idea to show the steps required. First, create a DataSet using the OLE DB connection type, and provide the connection string the provider (Provider), the server name (Data Source) and the database name (Initial Catalog), such as: Provider=MSOLAP;Data Source=SERVERNAME\\TABULAR;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL 2012 Then, create a Dataset using the data source previously defined, select the Text query type, and write the DAX code in the Query pane: You can also use the Query Designer window, that doesn’t provide any particular help in writing the DAX query, but at least can show a preview of the result of the query execution.   JAX-RS 2.0 has released Early Draft 3 and Jersey 2 (the implementation of JAX-RS 2.0) released Milestone 5. Jakub reported that this milestone is now integrated in GlassFish 4 builds. The first integration has basic functionality working and leaves EJB, CDI, and Validation for the coming months. TOTD #182 explains how to get started with creating a simple Maven-based application, deploying on GlassFish 4, and using the newly introduced Client API to test the REST endpoint. GlassFish 4 contains Jersey 2 as the JAX-RS implementation. If you want to use Jersey 1.1 functionality, then Martin's blog provide more details on that. All JAX-RS 1.x functionality will be supported using standard APIs anyway. This workaround is only required if Jersey 1.x functionality needs to be accessed. • Should mock objects for tests be created at a high or low level

  When creating unit tests for those other objects, what is the best way to create mock objects that provide data to other objects. Should they be created at a 'high level' and intercept the calls as soon as possible, or should they be done at a 'low level' and so make as much as the real code still be called? e.g. I'm writing a test for some code that requires a NoteMapper object that allows Notes to be loaded from the DB. class NoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { // Create an SQL query from $sqlQueryFactory // Run that SQL // if null // return null // else // return new Note($dataFromSQLQuery) } } I could either mock this object at a high level by creating a mock NoteMapper object, so that there are no calls to the SQL at all e.g. class MockNoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { //$mockData = {'Test Note title', "Test note text" } // return new Note($mockData); } } Or I could do it at a very low level, by creating a MockSQLQueryFactory that instead of actually querying the database just provides mock data back, and passing that to the current NoteMapper object. It seems that creating mocks at a high level would be easier in the short term, but that in the long term doing it at a low level would be more powerful and possibly allow more automation of tests e.g. by recording data in an out of a DB and then replaying that data for tests. Is there a recommended way of creating mocks? Are there any hard and fast rules about which are better, or should they both be used where appropriate?

• importing animations in Blender, weird rotations/locations

  This is for the Blender 2.6 API. There are two problems: 1. When I import a single animation frame from my animation file to Blender, all bones look fine. But when I import multiple (all of the frames), just the first one looks right, seems like newer frames are affected by older ones, so you get slightly off positions/rotations. This is true when both assigning PoseBone.matrix and PoseBone.matrix_basis. bone_index = 0 # for each frame: for frame_index in range(frame_count): # for each pose bone: add a key for bone_name in bone_names: # "bone_names" - a list of bone names I got earlier pose.bones[bone_name].matrix = animation_matrices[frame_index][bone_index] # "animation_matrices" - a nested list of matrices generated from reading a file # create the 'keys' for the Action from the poses pose.bones[bone_name].keyframe_insert('location', frame = frame_index+1) pose.bones[bone_name].keyframe_insert('rotation_euler', frame = frame_index+1) pose.bones[bone_name].keyframe_insert('scale', frame = frame_index+1) bone_index += 1 bone_index = 0 Again, it seems like previous frames are affecting latter ones, because if I import a single frame from the middle of the animation, it looks fine. 2. I can't assign armature-space animation matrices read from a file to a skeleton with hierarchy (parenting). In Blender 2.4 you could just assign them to PoseBone.poseMatrix and bones would deform perfectly whether the bones had a hierarchy or none at all. In Blender 2.6, there's PoseBone.matrix_basis and PoseBone.matrix. While matrix_basis is relative to parent bone, matrix isn't, the API says it's in object space. So it should have worked, but doesn't. So I guess we need to calculate a local space matrix from our armature-space animation matrices from the files. So I tried multiplying it ( PoseBone.matrix ) with PoseBone.parent.matrix.inverted() in both possible orders with no luck, still weird deformations.
