  I asked wrong question previously and was swamped with negative votes... Let me try again... What is absolutely fastest way to make an int positive (given 50/50 distribution of pos/neg over time). To be nominated for an answer I will require MSIL analysis and not a guess or measuring of time with granny's watch... P.S. as one of variations I proposed i * i not because I wanted to do Sqrt(i * i) afterwards but because i will be used only once to be compared to a const. And if i * i will win competition I simply multiply the const.. Hence the following solution is valid: int trigger = realTrigger * realTrigger; i = SomeCalcs(); i = i * i; if(i < trigger) DoSomething(); P.P.S. pointless rant is not acceptable.. like: why do you need this, its BS! • ClickOnce: How do I pass a querystring value to my app *through the installer*?

  My company currently builds separate MSI's for all of our clients, even though the app is 100% the same across the board (with a single exception, an ID in the app.config). I would like to show them that we can publish in once place with ClickOnce, and simply add a query string parameter for each client's installer. Example: http://mysite.com/setup.exe?ID=1234-56-7890 The issue that I'm having is that the above ("ID=1234...") is not being passed along to the "myapplication.application". What is happening instead is, the app is being installed successfully, and it is running the first time with an activation context, but the "ActivationUri" does not contain any query string values. Is there a way to pass query string values FROM THE INSTALLER URL to the application's launch URL? If so, how?

  I have created a repository AAA and another BBB. In AAA I have created a file A with the values a1, a2, a3 and commit In BBB I have created a file B with the values b1, b2, b3, commit and export a bundle. I add the bundle in AAA and merge. I make a change in B, and write b33 in AAA and another change in B and write b23 in BBB. and commit both. I create bundle of BBB and add the bundle in AAA. I do a merge. Now I decide to revert to the revert to step 2. I no more want to have the merge of 4. changes done in B as they were bad merges. Now I want to add the bundle of 3 but I can see that it can`t see any changes anymore. Why? How can I do the merge once more?

Ofcourse a lazy val must have some overhead - somewhere Scala must keep track of whether the value has already been evaluated and the evaluation must be synchronized, because multiple threads might try to access the value for the first time at the same time. What exactly is the cost of a lazy val - is there a hidden boolean flag associated with a lazy val to keep track if it has been evaluated or not, what exactly is synchronized and are there any more costs? And a follow-up question: Suppose I do this: class Something { lazy val (x, y) = { ... } } Is this the same as having two separate lazy vals x and y or do I get the overhead only once, for the pair (x, y)?

  Hi, Im trying to use the FolderBrowserDialog to select a folder in C#. At first I got a Thread exception, so I googled what was wrong and fixed that but now im stuck at a nother problem. I whant to know when a folder has been selected.   The question is simple: what is lifetime of that functor object that is automatically generated for me by the C++ compiler when I write a lambda-expression? I did a quick search, but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. In particular, if I pass the lambda somewhere, and it gets remembered there, and then I go out of scope, what's going to happen once my lambda is called later and tries to access my stack-allocated, but no longer alive, captured variables? Or does the compiler prevent such situation in some way? Or what?

  If you ask a DB2/zOS engine DBA a question about DB2's behavior, the DBA will refer to the DB2 engine as "he" much the way a sailor uses "she" to refer to his ship. For example: "Once you fill the freespace, DB2 still wants to keep those rows in cluster order in the tablespace. That's why he'll split that page in half, and you end up with lots of half-empty pages. That is, unless the cluster key of the row you've just inserted is the highest in the table, in which case he makes a new empty page, and he puts just your new row into that page. • How to return all aspnet_compiler errors (not just those in first directory)

  Hi there! Is there a way to get the aspnet_compiler to go through all views and return all errors, rather than just the errors in the current view directory? For example, lets say I have a project that has a bunch of folders... Views Folder1 Folder2 Folder3 Folder4 Two of them (Folder2 and Folder3) have errors. aspnet_compiler will run, and only return the errors it comes across in Folder2. It won't return those in Folder3 at the same time. Once I fix the errors in Folder2 and run it again, it'll then pick up the ones in the Folder3. I fix those. And then have to run the tool again, and again until it's all fixed. This is getting annoying!! For reference, here's the command I use: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_compiler -v / -p "C:\path\to\project" Thanks in advance!

• C# Changing a constant

  I have inherited a small windows form based program written in C# that uses a 'constant' (See below), I need to modify this program so 'PROPERTY_NAME' can be "jobs" and "careers". private const string PROPERTY_NAME = "jobs"; I'm guessing a constant isn't designed to change so should I need to change this. The line above is set once at the top of a class file and then PROPERTY_NAME is used throughout that file. On the main form I would like to add two radio buttons 1 called 'jobs' and one called 'careers' and then change the PROPERTY_NAME in the class file based on which is selected. Would I need to pass the radio button status to the method in the class file? I recall reading that I can't simply read the radio button value from the class file. Many thanks for your advice. Jane

  Is it possible to add a class as a solution item and use it as a linked item in all the projects in the solution? Basically I was thinking of creating a class (which will inherit ConfigurationSection) and keeping it as the Solution Item. I wanted to add it as a linked item in all the projects in the solution, so that everyone can use it to access the configuration properties. (Refer to this tutorial for more details) Now the issue I am facing is that when I create a class in the solution item, it doesn't have any namespace. And it shows up in intellisense, inside the projects but once I create an object of the solution item class, the object doesn't show up in intellisense. Any ideas why?

That's some code I want to execute once and after that process has finished. Do or don't SPSite and SPWeb's remain opened somwhere? Why i`m asking this? I just don't want to stress when using something like var lists = from web in site.AllWebs.Cast<SPWeb>() where web is meeting workspace && list is task list select list then do some stuff on lists etc. Some serious resource leak there because webs get opened, filtered and NOT closed. So should I worry in console app?

  I've a java webApp where people can sell their items like in ebay. I need to integrate a payment system and I'm wondering what's the best (from a customer point of view) and easiest to integrate in my app. I was thinking to integrate paypal and require all the sellers to have an account on it. Maybe Google Checkout can be a good option as well, but I don't know if it's used a lot. I think I'll redirect the user to Paypal and then remove the item once I receive the confirmation from paypal that the item has been payed. Would you suggest another easier to integrate/more trusted solution? Thank you

  I'm interested in setting up a TDD environment for developing Vim scripts and rc files. As a simple example, say I want to have vim insert 8 spaces when I press the tab key. I would set up a script that did the following: Launch vim using a sandboxed .vimrc file press i press tab press esc press :w test_out assert that test_out contains ' ' by the default config in vim, this would fail. However, once I add set expandtab to my .vimrc file, the test will pass. So the question is, how do I programmatically issue these commands? 'vim -c ' is close, but seems to only work for ex mode commands. Any suggestions? This question seem to be thoroughly google-proof.

• How do i keep my DB and lucene in sync?

  So i can have a transaction in sql. But i am sure its not a good idea to wait in the middle of a transaction for lucene to finish also i am unsure if lucene is permanently saved in the DB until i do something there. Whats the best way to keep my DB and lucene in sync? I am thinking of adding a lucene_queue in my sql db and everytime i make a change i add it into the queue (removing older queue if any) and delete it once it is done. Is this the best way? Also i am unsure how to make lucene permanently keep the changes i made and how frequent i can/should do it.

• mmap() for large file I/O?

  I'm creating a utility in C++ to be run on Linux which can convert videos to a proprietary format. The video frames are very large (up to 16 megapixels), and we need to be able to seek directly to exact frame numbers, so our file format uses libz to compress each frame individually, and append the compressed data onto a file. Once all frames are finished being written, a journal which includes meta data for each frame (including their file offsets and sizes) is written to the end of the file. I'm currently using ifstream and ofstream to do the file i/o, but I am looking to optimize as much as possible. I've heard that mmap() can increase performance in a lot of cases, and I'm wondering if mine is one of them. Our files will be in the tens to hundreds of gigabytes, and although writing will always be done sequentially, random access reads should be done in constant time. Any thoughts as to whether I should investigate this further, and if so does anyone have any tips for things to look out for? Thanks!

• multiple jQuery Cycle slideshows get superimposed

  I'm using the jQuery cycle plugin to create multiple slideshows on a single page (which, once I get this problem figured out, will be started/stopped by mouse hover -- yeah, I know there are 9 slideshows on the page). Problem is, when I tell more than one slideshow to start cycling, whichever ones I call cycle() on get superimposed. So, all the images from slide 1 are superimposed, then they all transition to slide 2, etc. I can tell they're being superimposed because the first slide of each slideshow contains a transparent PNG. This happens whether I call cycle() in a jQuery each() iterator, or even if I call it by hand on just two or three of the containers with a jQuery id selector. • Trying to use VB to automate some queries. Running into what looks like a string problem

  Hi there I'm using MS Access 2003 and I'm trying to execute a few queries at once using VB. When I write out the query in SQL it works fine, but when I try to do it in VB it asks me to "Enter Parameter Value" for DEPA, then DND (which are the first few letters of a two strings I have). For background, my site is a special-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. Yes, sometimes people use cameras instead of scanners for digitizing documents, but the potential problems IMO far outweight the possibility of encountering a document digitized with a photo camera. EDIT: question originally said "and it's not indefinite (it only runs once through the array).", but Mario corrected my stupid naming error. EDIT2: I'm now using Reigel's answer (see below), which works perfectly, but I still can't find any way to fade between the images smoothly. All help greatfully appreciated :)
