  • Debugging JuniperSetupClientInstaller.exe Problems

    I recently moved from Windows 7 to Windows 2008 server so I can run SharePoint on my physical machine and not through a VPC, so I've been trying to get everything re-installed on my system.  As part of that process, I tried re-establishing a connection back to one of client's corporate networks and their system prompted me to run JuniperSetupClientInstaller.exe.  Normally this runs, finishes, and you can connect to the VPN no problem.  This time, however, it failed.  Unfortunately, there were no error messages to let me know why - it just didn't work. I've had success running application in "compatability mode" so I gave that a shot - same problem.  But during the installation I noticed that JuniperSetupClientInstaller.exe unpacks a number of files into a directory (you can see the exact location in the details of the installer) and then runs a DIFFERENT application - JuniperSetupClient.exe.  If you navigate to that directory, you will see a text file named JuniperSetupClient.log that contains information about the setup process. In my case, I installed a SharePoint site on Port 3333 - which the Juniper software needs to communicate with the VPN.  There was a nice message in the log file saying the VPN software could not bind to port 3333 which quickly alerted me to the issue, and moving the site off that port number fixed the issue.  However, it would have been nice to had an error message of sorts because I spent a chunk of time futilely researching compatibility issues.

  • HTML Presence Controls for Communications Server 14 CodePlex Project

    Showing Presence on the Web If youre running Office Communicator Server 2007 R2, you know that your only out-of-the-box option for showing presence on the web is to use the NameControl ActiveX control that ships as part of Office.  Being an ActiveX control, this obviously means that youre limited to Internet Explorer.  Also, nobody likes ActiveX controls What if you want to show the presence of users in a pure ASP.NET or HTML application and cant assume that the user has Communicator installed you need anASP.NET or HTML presence control.  HTML Presence Controls for Microsoft Communications Server 14 We recently worked with the UC team at Microsoft on a keynote demo for TechEd 2010 in New Orleans.  The demo was for a fictitious airline Fabrikam Airlines that wanted to show the presence of customer service and reservations agents on its website.  Customers could also start an instant message conversation with the agents using a Silverlight web chat window that used WCF to communicate with the backend UCMA application. We built HTML Presence Controls that use AJAX to poll a REST-based WCF service running in IIS and hosting a UCMA 3.0 presence subscription application.   Microsoft has graciously allowed us to publish these on CodePlex so that the development community can benefit from them:  http://htmlpresencecontrols.codeplex.com/ We will be maintaining the CodePlex project as new builds of UCMA 3.0 become available.  Check out the project home page on CodePlex for some more in-depth details on how the controls are implemented. ASP.NET Server Control Implementation Were providing an ASP.NET Server Control implementation that you can use stand-alone or in a GridView or Repeater (or other layout control).  The control has properties that allow you to control its appearance, e.g. you can choose whether or not to show the contacts name or availability text. You can also use the server control in a layout control such as a GridView by putting it in a TemplateColumn and binding to the Sip Uri in the data source. Disclaimer Once we started working on these, we realized why Microsoft hasnt shipped such controls as part of the product.  There are some tradeoffs you have to be aware of when using these controls, heres the high level. Privacy The backend UCMA 3.0 application that subscribes to presence of contacts runs as a trusted application and can thus retrieve the presence of any user in the organization.  Theres currently no good way in UCMA to apply any privacy rules to ensure that the consumer of the presence controls has permission to see the presence of the contacts that the controls are bound to.  Just to be absolutely crystal clear These controls provide a way to query the presence of any user in the organization, regardless of the privacy relationship between the person consuming the controls and the contacts whose presence is being displayed. Were exploring options for a design pattern that would allow you to inject some privacy controls.  Keep in mind though that you would most likely be responsible for implementing this logic, as there is currently no functionality in UCMA that allows you to do that. Polling the WCF REST Service The controls poll the backend WCF service to retrieve the presence of contacts - you can control the refresh interval so that they poll less often. We implemented a caching layer so that the WCF service is always communicating with a presence cache it never communicates directly with Communications Server.  For example, if your web page is showing the presence of sip:[email protected] and 500 people have the page open, the presence cache only contains one instance of the subscription Communications Server is not being polled 500 times for the presence of that contact. Once the presence of a contact changes, it is updated in the cache.  There are some server-based push mechanisms that would work nicely here, such as the one that Outlook Web Access 2010 uses.  Unfortunately we didnt have time to explore these options.     Although I can actually run San Andreas under wine first of all this is the menu: Well when I press the first menu item, I can play but there are some weird "bugs" with the graphics. The sky turns black, some 3d figures appearing on the screen etc. + the game is very slow. Intel built in graphic card so drivers are built in as well. When I run it on Windows - same computer everything works fine.     Introduction You have installed Team Foundation Server 2010, you are ready to go.  Your client is Visual Studio 2008 SP1, and need to connect to TFS 2010. Here is the story, the steps to configure Team Explorer are almost the same … meaning, you will open Visual Studio, then go to Team Explorer.  At that point you will Add an Existing Project, this where we connect to TFS.  Except, we get this: Now what?!?  We need to install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010.  Where to get it from? TFS 2010 installation media Microsoft’s Download Center Update Installation We arrive at the Welcome Screen for the Update, click Next Next comes the license screen, accept the license, by selecting the checkbox, then click next. The installation process will start at that point. Once it completes, click on Finish. Second Try Time to attempt to connect again. We are back to working with Team Explorer, and Adding an existing project.  There is a formula to be successful with this. protocol://servername:port/tfs/<name of collection> protocol = http or https servername = your tfs 2010 server port = 8080 by default, or the custom port you are using /tfs = I am assuming the default too /<name of collection = the name of the collection that was provisioned. Once the values are provided, click OK, then close. At this point you should see a listing of Projects available within the TFS 2010 collection. Select the project and click OK.  You will now see this listed in Team Explorer.

    Recently someone asked me for steps to configure multiple instances of MySQL database in an Operating Platform. Coz of my familiarity with Solaris OE, I prepared some notes on configuring multiple instances of MySQL database on Solaris 11. Maybe it's useful for some: If you want to run Solaris Operating System (or any other OS of your choice) as a virtualized instance in desktop, consider using Virtual Box. To download Solaris Operating System, click here. Once you have your Solaris Operating System (Version 11) up and running and have Internet connectivity to gain access to the Image Packaging System (IPS), please follow the steps as mentioned below to install MySQL and configure multiple instances: 1. Install MySQL Database in Solaris 11 $ sudo pkg install mysql-51 2. Verify if the mysql is installed: $ svcs -a | grep mysql Note: Service FMRI will look similar to the one here: svc:/application/database/mysql:version_51 3. Prepare data file system for MySQL Instance 1 zfs create rpool/mysql zfs create rpool/mysql/data zfs set mountpoint=/mysql/data rpool/mysql/data 4. Prepare data file system for MySQL Instance 2 zfs create rpool/mysql/data2 zfs set mountpoint=/mysql/data rpool/mysql/data2 5. Change the mysql/datadir of the MySQL Service (SMF) to point to /mysql/data $ svcprop mysql:version_51 | grep mysql/data $ svccfg -s mysql:version_51 setprop mysql/data=/mysql/data 6. An example entry would look as follows: ${MySQLBIN}/mysqld_safe --defaults-file=${MYSQLDATA}/my.cnf --user=mysql --datadir=${MYSQLDATA} --pid=file=${PIDFILE} 11. Start the service: $ sudo svcadm enable mysql:version_51_2 $ sudo svcadm enable mysql:version_51 12. Verify that the two services are running by using: $ svcs mysql 13.   • Cannot FTP without simultaneous SSH connection?

    I'm trying to set up an old box as a backup server (running 10.04.4 LTS). I intend to use 3rd party software on my PC to periodically connect to my server via FTP(S) and to mirror certain files. For some reason, all FTP connection attempts fail UNLESS I'm simultaneously connected via SSH. For example, if I use putty to test the connection to port 21, the system hangs and times out. I get: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] <cursor> However, when I'm simultaneously logged in (in another session) everything works: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] 230 Login successful. Basically, this means that my software will never be able to connect on its own, as intended. I know that the correct port is open because it works (sometimes) and nmap gives me: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-03-20 16:15 CDT Interesting ports on xx.xxx.xx.x: Not shown: 995 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 21/tcp open ftp 22/tcp open ssh 53/tcp open domain 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.15 seconds My only hypothesis is that this has something to do with iptables. Maybe it's allowing only established connections? I don't think that's how I set it up, but maybe?     I just bought an HP Pavilion g6 laptop and I installed Natty Narwhal alongside Windows 7. In Windows 7, my WiFi works perfect but in Ubuntu it absolutely (no matter what I do) won't detect my home WiFi network.   • Handy SQL Server Functions Series (HSSFS) Part 2.0 - Prelude to Parsing Patterns Properly

    In Part 1 of the series I wrote about 2 lesser-known and somewhat undocumented functions. In this part, I'm going to cover some familiar string functions like Substring(), Parsename(), Patindex(), and Charindex() and delve into their strengths and weaknesses. I'm also splitting this part up into sub-parts to help focus on a particular technique and/or problem with the technique, hence the Part 2.0. Consider this a composite post, or com-post, if you will. (It may just turn out to be a pile of sh_t after all) I'll be using a contrived example, perhaps the most frustratingly useful, or usefully frustrating, function in SQL Server: @@VERSION. Contrived, because there are better ways to get the information (which I'll cover later); frustrating, because of the way Microsoft formatted the value; and useful because it does have 1 or 2 bits of information not found elsewhere. First let's take a look at the output of @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86) Apr 2 2010 15:53:02 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) There are 4 lines, with lines 2-4 indented with a tab character.  In case your browser (or this blog software) doesn't show it correctly, I gave each line a different color.  While this PRINTs nicely, if you SELECT @@VERSION in grid mode it all runs together because it ignores carriage return/line feed (CR/LF) characters.  Not fatal, but annoying. Note that @@VERSION's output will vary depending on edition and version of SQL Server, and also the OS it's installed on.  Despite the differences, the output is laid out the same way and the relevant pieces are in the same order.   • Dual LAN Printing

    I want to use Ubuntu 10.10 Server in a classroom, a computer lab whose bandwidth is provided by a local cable ISP. That's no problem, though the school network has an IP printer that I want to use. I cannot reach the printer through the cable Internet. But, I have two network cards. How is it possible to use both networks at once? eth0 (static 192.168.1.254) is plugged into a four-port router, 192.168.1.1. On the public side of the four-port router is Internet provided by the cable company. I also have the classroom workstations plugged into a switch. The switch is plugged into the four-port router. The whole classroom is wired into the cable Internet. The other NIC, eth1, could it be plugged into an Ethernet jack in the wall? It uses the school network, and I might receive by DHCP an IP address like 10.140.10.100, with the printer on maybe 10.120.50.10. I was thinking about installing the printer on the server so that it could be shared with the workstations. But how does this work? Can I just plug eth1 into the school network and access both LANs?   • Permission denied on /dev/xvdf despite sudo?

    I'm trying to get a stream off port 9999 and write to /dev/xvdf. I'm using Amazon EC2 with the Ubuntu 11.10 server image. By default I log in as 'ubuntu' which has sudo privileges. However, when I run the following netcat command, I get this error ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ ls -al /dev/xv* brw-rw---- 1 root disk 202, 1 2011-11-30 22:22 /dev/xvda1 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 202, 80 2011-11-30 22:27 /dev/xvdf ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ sudo netcat -p 9999 -l > /dev/xvdf bash: /dev/xvdf: Permission denied ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ Any idea why I get the permission denied error and how I can work around it? Update: Something mysterious is running in the background that resets the permissions?   • Qualcomm Gobi WWAN modem no longer appears in Network Manager

    Not sure what happened here. I installed Cinnamon on my Ubuntu 12.10 environment yesterday, rebooted when finished and everything was working fine. I even used my WWAN modem after my fixed line broadband went down. However, after starting my machine this morning and seeing that my fixed line is still having problems (intermittently), I clicked the network applet and my WWAN device wasn't listed. It's not in the main network manager window either. I couldn't see anything relevant in the debug output for network-manager, but I've created a paste for it just in case. In /lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-qdl-device-blacklist.rules, I found the following line that matches the device IDs from the lsusb output: # Generic Gobi QDL device ATTRS{idVendor}=="05c6", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9221", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1" I tried commenting out the second line and restarting network-manager/modem-manager but it didn't help. I've no idea where to go from here, does anyone else have any ideas?

    I had this random display issue ever since Ubuntu 11.04 and now running Ubuntu 11.10 and this problem still persist. It is very hard for me to explain, so I uploaded a video to elaborate itself. Before I convert from Windows 7, this issue never happened. The symptom is so random that I cannot reproduce or tell precisely when will this happen again. My wild guess is, should this be related to driver?   • Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

    We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware.   • BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

    If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Creating the WCF-NetMsmq receive port I will not go through this step in all details. It is straightforward. URI for this receive location should be 'net.msmq://localhost/private/myapp.myqueue'. Notes ·         The biggest problem is usually on the step the “Registering the CLR assembly”. It is hard to predict where are the assemblies from the assembly list, what version should be used, x86 or x64. It is pity of such “rude” integration of the SQL with .NET. ·         In couple cases the new WCF-NetMsmq port was not able to work with the queue. Try to replace the WCF- NetMsmq port with the WCF-Custom port with netMsmqBinding. It was working fine for me. ·         To test how messages go through the queue you can turn on the Journal /Enabled option for the queue. I used the QueueExplorer utility to look to the messages in Journal. The Computer Management can also show the messages but it shows only small part of the message body and in the weird format. The QueueExplorer can do the better job; it shows the whole body and Xml messages are in good color format.

  • GNOME PPP doesn't connect

    I am a new ubuntu user and connect to the internet using wi-fi broadband on my notebook. But I need to setup a dial-up connection through my phone which can keep me online while I travel. I have tried connecting to dial-up using pppconfig, wvdial and gnome-ppp. I do not know whether they use the same files for connecting but I have only been able to connect using Gnome-ppp. But the connection is intermittent and disconnects every five seconds or so. The exit code is 16 which I checked in man and got to know that the modem hangs itself up. I am connecting my phone to ubuntu as a usb modem. And as I am new I might have skipped a step or two. Please suggest a solution or an alternative to this. I have put down the Gnome-ppp log.
