• Ubuntu crashed during the update to 12.04, not I can't recover my files, help please

  I'm pretty new to Linux and I've only installed Ubuntu as I couldn't afford to buy Windows, worked well and I liked it. But I chose to upgrade it to the newest version after a prompt. The update froze and the machine was unresponsive which forced me to hard reboot it. Now nothing seems to load and I've reached my wits end (mainly cos I'm lost in all the command lines). I've decided to try and recover my data from the hard drive, only two folders, by selecting the try Ubuntu option when I insert the OS CD into the machine. The problem I'm experiencing now is it won't let me copy my folders, I get a 'The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "folder_name".' Does anyone know how I can recover this data?

  If any1 can help would be much appreciated.. I recently build my own PC would like to use for gaming etc.. (With Ubuntu of course as my OS) Installed Ubuntu via Flash Drive Everything is connected. Purchased a Graphic card/GPU GPU info;(XFX Double D R9 270 925MHz Boost 2GB DDR5 DP HDMI 2XDVI Graphic card) Now my problem is when i put the CD to install the GPU Drivers it would not recognize the HDD So why is the hard drive not being recognized HDD info;(ADATA USA Premier pro SP600 32GB SATA) I am able to enter the BIOS menu (If that helps) Any help would be much appreciated & Thanks in advanced

  my problem is the that for a Hackintosh (unofficial PC running OS X) I needed to set AHCI, Power Mode S3 and HPET 64bit. Now, I want to install Ubuntu (when 12.04 comes out) and was wondering if these settings will be right to use for Ubuntu. I read that AHCI is how the hard disks are accessed, Power Mode S3 is how suspend works with the RAM but couldn't figure out if using HPET 64bit makes any difference than HPET 32bit. What I would like is an explanation of what these BIOS settings do and what is best for Ubuntu. Thank you very much

  I have been trying to install ubuntu along windows but failed. the issue is that I get a graphical glitch with the colours of the ubuntu loading screen while installing from usb and no progress is made, the pc freezes. I've tryied the nomodeset solution, but when I have to reboot I get the same problem. I've tried ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.04 etc...both generic and for amd: nothing worked... any idea how this could be resolved or which distribution/iso I should try for my system? thank you.   Back when I had windows 7, I cloned my internal hard drive to an enclosed external usb hard drive. I then formatted my internal hard drive and installed ubuntu 11.10 as my only OS. How do I migrate my files, pics, mp3's, and etc off the external drive and back to my internal drive which now only has ubuntu on it. (and why is this process not made easier?) I have tried logging in as the root user but I cannot find the external device. I have downloaded several different apps to manage files, usb sticks and etc. PLEASE HELP!!!

  I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time ever. I have just installed it in a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came pre installed with Windows Vista and i currently run both of the OS (I just choose when the computer starts up). The wifi definitely works on the computer since i used it to download Ubuntu in the first place when I was using Vista. The Network Manager says that I only have a 'Wired' Network and it doesn't have any other options to choose from. I connected the Laptop into a wired connection and downloaded the 'Wicd Network Manager' but it had no effect either. From there I continued to go into 'Software Sources' and installed the wireless drive but that had no effect either. So... What can I do?

Occasionally when I am working at a 5 hour stretch, the computer will freeze up completely and I will have to close down manually and reboot. When this happens I lose the material I have been working on as I cannot save it. And I often receive a notice at this time saying that my profile is not available or that I do not have a profile. I am an Ubuntu user not a technician and do not know what to do about this problem.

  hello all i had ubuntu on my desktop but i had lots of problems with it so i turned back to windows... now im having the biggest problem ever :S all my dad was in a folder that i created on ubuntu OS and i copied em to another HDD and then i removed it and putted my HDD and removed all the partitions and made the windows parttions once i copied those folders back to my HDD ( using windows 7 ) i found those folders size 0KB when i try to open them i get error.. pleaaase tell me what to do.. i was using my /home partition as ext4.. waiting for answer :(

  I've just installed matlab and want to be able to call it from the terminal. It works fine when I explicitly call it from its directory. I cd to /usr/local/bin and type sudo ln -s /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a/bin/matlab matlab when I then type "matlab" in the terminal, I get the error message "bash: /media/OS/MATLAB/bin/matlab: No such file or directory" I have no idea why it's trying to call matlab from /media. I've tried deleting the file from usr/local/bin but when I create it again the same thing happens. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  i have a hp dv6 system. on which i was having the windows 8 installed. as i was interested in downloading the ubuntu 12.10 along with windows 8(not inside) .i have made separate partition in ubuntu 12.10 but some how it backfires and now i am not able to boot windows 8 and ubuntu. with windows 8 there is no drive to access the drive partition that has OS. with ubuntu i am getting blank screen. i am thinking that i have problem in system partition but i am not able to solve it. Plz help me. i am in a venerable condition... i have tried booting the window with the help of installation cd but iam not succesful in any of the method - 1-reset PC 2-RECOVERY 3- from command prompt i tried to check disks but it is not showing anything

  Lately, I've been having Ubuntu crashing randomly.. it goes into read only mode, but once I restart it's working again. Today it happened again and I had to manually shut the computer down. Now I'm not able to boot anymore. I get the following when turning the computer on: error: unknown filesystem And I'm left at "grub rescue". I booted from the Live CD and installed "boot-repair". When I run it it says "no os has been found on this computer", it gives me no option to carry out any fixes.   This is precisely a 12.04 HDMI output problem, because it works for 11.10 - everything else are the same, only the OS version is different. The symptom is that on my HDMI output TV screen, it always shows Unsupported resolution even after setting it to the resolution that works on Ubuntu 11.10 (via gnome-control-center, in which it detects my TV just fine), I still don't see any output on TV. The audio is not working either. I think it is 12.04's problem, because if I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, and everything else remain the same, HDMI output (video & audio) work just fine. 12.04 is a freshly installed, just the vanilla Ubuntu HD installation. How should I nailed down / fix the problem?

  I have installed 13.10 on a new computer and want to tranfer my purchase (Braid) there. I have read this page about how to do this. However, when I log in to https://software-center.ubuntu.com/subscriptions, nothing appears. My guess is that when I purchased this game, I used an older email address than the one I am currently using. Ideally I would like to be able to transfer this purchase to my current ubuntu one account. Or, if this is not possible, at least to have a chance to know with which account this purchase has been done so I can have a try to reinstall it somewhere else. NB: In the Ubuntu Software Center on my older computer the game is still there and marked as "already purchased". EDIT: This is not an upgrade issue, as my old computer has not been upgraded to 13.10, and my newer computer is, well, new, 13.10 being its first OS. Note that I don't see my purchases on the software center web site on my old as well as my new computer, which makes sense.

  My screen is all messed up. I can see everything beside my start menu and when I scroll up the mouse arrow goes up and out of the screen. It's not normal. Do I need to install "GeForce 8400 GS NVIDIA" drivers on my Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit machine? Please be very patient with me and use very simple words that a simple newbie could understand.
