  • SQL Profiler and Tuning Advisor for Reporting Services - what events should be selected?

    I've used the SQL Profiler to generate a trace file, and tuning advisor to take that trace file and provide some recommendations on db updates. However, the SQL Profiler doesn't seem to track the queries when running against a Reporting Server, the profiler doesn't seem to be capturing any of the queries. I'm logging the defaults (SQL:BatchCompleted and Starting, RPC:completed, and Sessions - Existing Connections) What events should I be capturing in SQL Profiler in order to run the tuning advisor?

  • Is there a way to expose multiple WCF services through a single endpoint?

    I currently offer a service with many methods via WCF. I'd like to refactor so the single service is split into multiple classes, each offering a different set of functionality. However, I'd prefer to still have a single connection to the client. Is this possible? I guess the answer is No, so how should I solve this issue? Is there a workaround? Or is my idea completely stupid and I should change the design of the application?

    Hi all, I'm implementing a web service on the xfire plugin. I was wondering how I'm supposed to handle the errors. I tried with this setup but the error is not returned to the SOAP client: GaSession[] myMethod( String userId ) throws MyException{ GaUser user = GaUser.findByUserId( userId ) if (!user) throw new MyException("user ${userId} does not exist") // do stuff and return valid results } Is there a standard way to handle errors and return them to the client in a clear way? My log is full of messages like: 2010-06-13 18:20:40,926 [Thread-289] DEBUG aegis.XMLClassMetaInfoManager - Mapping file : /com/mycompany/MyClass.aegis.xml not found. Is there a way to fix this?   • Ways to Unit Test Oauth for different services in ruby?

    Are there any best practices in writing unit tests when 90% of the time I'm building the Oauth connecting class, I need to actually be logging into the remote service? I am building a rubygem that logs in to Twitter/Google/MySpace, etc., and the hardest part is making sure I have the settings right for that particular provider, and I would like to write tests for that. Is there a recommended way to do that? If I did mocks or stubs, I'd still have to spend that 90% of the time figuring out how to use the service, and would end up writing tests after the fact instead of before...

  • Bump the Bill

    I'm writing this from 3,400 feet in the air somewhere between Chicago and Austin. GoGo In-flight strikes again. Is there anywhere I can't get a WiFi connection? While listening to Deacon Blues by Steely Dan and skimming the news, I just came across an interesting article on mobile payments. Remember when I wrote about the iPhone Bump application and its possible use in retail? Well it looks like PayPal updated their mobile payments application to include the bump technology. Now its possible to transfer money between individuals by bumping iPhones. According to the WSJ, Paypal did 24 million transactions in 2008 and 140 million in 2009 on mobile phones. As the technology gets easier to use, that number is bound to increase. Alternatives to Paypal include Google Checkout, Amazon Payments, wireless carriers ("put it on my phone bill"), smart cards (using your phone's SIM card), and iTunes. That last one comes courtesy of a story Joe Skorupa wrote on mobile payments. It looks like Apple allows iPhone apps to take micro-payments via iTunes accounts, so there may come a time when its possible to use your iPhone to make a purchase in a retail store and have your credit card charged via your iTunes account. There are still some improvements in usability to be made before using a phone will be easier than swiping a credit card, but its already better than fussing with cash.

  • Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no "hot plugging")

    I am able to get an external VGA monitor (or projector) to work if I start my laptop with it connected. However, if I start the laptop with it disconnected there is no signal on the external. The Displays screen shows the external, and thinks that it is active, but there is no signal being sent to it. This has been a persistent problem since 10.04 (I am now on 12.04.... each upgrade hoping something is improved). I should note that even when it works (starting with display connected), Displays still says the monitor is "unknown" (but it sends the signal). For the correct resolution to display, I have had to add a few xrandr lines for my monitor to my .xprofile file... otherwise resolution is limited to default 1024x768. So, resolution issues can be worked around, but the main issue is that the external doesn't get a signal without starting the machine with it connected.   • Problems Running GTA San Anread under wine

    Although I can actually run San Andreas under wine first of all this is the menu: Well when I press the first menu item, I can play but there are some weird "bugs" with the graphics. The sky turns black, some 3d figures appearing on the screen etc. + the game is very slow. Intel built in graphic card so drivers are built in as well. When I run it on Windows - same computer everything works fine. In this blog post, Mark goes on to say: "It was a great opportunity to get close to the Oracle Fusion Applications, which the company presented as proven and ready, with customers using them on-premises and in private and public cloud computing usage methods.     Microsoft announced that it has sold over 1.5 million windows 7 phone devices. Windows 7 is a new generation of OS. Mobile operators/users/device programmers need to adopt the same. Its not going to be a easy transition because it’s not an advanced/next version of win 6.x for mobile. We have heard that development from Microsoft side for Win 6.x devices will not continue after sometime. Don’t know how long will get the support! Everything in it s quite new, like OS, User interface, XBox sync, and also requires mobile phone companies to run the OS on high end chips, meaning atleast 1GHz. So the user segment occupied by phones like HTC Wild Fire are not the ones targeted.   Hey ! There an is a catch with this magic number 1.5 million…. It depicts only the number of units sold to mobile operators and retailers. It’s not the number of actual units held in consumers hands and activated. The number could improve significantly in 2011 where Sprint and Verizon join the party in United States. Atleast dozen phone models are in line up now in the rest of the world running Win 7 OS. One good things that customers can rejoice is that Microsoft will direly push software updates to all its consumers. Operator will not interfere. We can expect strong sales going forward with just this important point where Google’s Android lacks the same.     hullo folks....this is my first thread here Ok,i first installed ubuntu 11.10 the day it released on my old laptop...internet worked fine without configuring anything so now,i installed ubuntu 11.10 on my newer laptop.But it says ,"device not ready(firmware missing". Windows 7 worked absolutely fine on it i also tried using a Netgear routed i use on my HDTV,but ubuntu doesnt detect it Any Help?   • POP Forums v10 beta posted for ASP.NET MVC 4

You can also read my previous post on why I ditched jQuery Mobile. This is the beta for POP Forums v10, with the mobile special sauce. It requires ASP.NET MVC 4 RC, which you can download here. Of course, feel free to submit bugs to the issue tracker. See a live demo here: http://popforums.com/Forums What's new? Uses a very light weight CSS and Javascript package to provide a touch-friendly interface for mobile devices. Numbers are formatted (sensitive to culture) when 1,000 or higher. CSS is more integration friendly, and specific to the ForumContainer element. Mail delivery from queue is now parallel, so you can specify a sending interval, and the number of messages to process on each interval. Background "services" refactored, and will only run with a call on app start to PopForumsActivation.StartServices(). This is partly to facilitate future use in Web farms/multiple Web roles. Update to jQuery v1.7.1. Replaced use of .live() with .on() in script, pursuant to jQuery update, which deprecates .live(). FIX: Bug in topic repository around caching keys for single-server data layer. FIX: Pager links on recent topics pointed to incorrect route. FIX: Deleting a post didn't update last user/post time. FIX: Ditched attempt at writing to event log with super failures, since almost no one has permission in production. FIX: Bug in grayed-out fields in admin mail setup. FIX: Weird color profiles would break loading of images for resize. FIX: TOS text on account sign-up was double encoded. Known issues None yet, but ditching jQuery Mobile from the previous beta turned out to be a good decision.
