  • Python 2.4 on Ubuntu 12.04

    I want to develop a Python application on Ubuntu 12.04 using python 2.4, but since the default version of python on ubuntu is 2.7. I cannot get the libraries and packages to work for python 2.4. I have tried using virtualenv but even with virtualenv I was not successful in installing packages for python2.4. So I would like to know if there is any reliable method to get python 2.4 to work with Ubuntu. I know that I shouldnt mess with the default version of python on ubuntu and hence I am looking for a better alternative. Thanks in advance.

  • A record DNS, nameserver help

    I just installed kloxo on my vps and I want to link my domain to that server...which it sort of already is...I made it connect to it via an A record. That works, like the IP is pointing to my server but how do I make a website using it. I tried adding the domain but this doesn't work ...I feel i'm not explaining this well um, on my server it asked me to create DNS template so I did I created the nameservers ns1.mydomain.com, ns2.mydomain.com Then I added the domain to the panel mydomain.com I go to the folder it creates to it, but no matter the file there it wont work...any ideas? Is there a way to possibly just not even add a domain to kloxo and just kind of treat the ip of the server as the domain? Since the A record points there anyway? I don't intend to host another website on the server anyway...

  • Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/www on Ubuntu 11.04

    I am getting a 403 when i access http://mayfieldafc.local/ upon looking in the apache logs i am getting [Wed Nov 16 12:32:59 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/www I have what i believe to be the correct permissions set on /var/www. hutber can create and delete files, hutber being my user. I can also execute as program on this folder. in mayfields vhost its: <Directory /var/www/mayfieldafc/docroot> Options +FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> I am pulling my hair out not being able to work on my sites with my work ubuntu install. I know of nothing else that could be effecting this. So any ideas?

  • Walmart and Fusion Apps

    Photograph: Misha Vaughan I attended Fusion Apps (yes, I know I am supposed to say "Oracle Fusion Applications", but stuffy old style guides are a turn-off in interwebs conversations) User Experience Advocate (FXA) training in Long Beach, California last week; a suitable location as ODTUG KSCOPE 11 was kicking off and key players were in the area. As a member of Oracle's Apps-UX team I know the Fusion Apps messaging, natch, and done some other Fusion Apps go-to-market content work too. For the messaging details themselves, see Lonneke Dikmans (@lonnekedikmans) great blog, by the way. However, I wanted some 'formal' training combined with the opportunity to meet and learn from people already out there delivering those messages. The idea in me reaching out to Misha Vaughan, Apps-UX FXA maven, to get me onto this training was that in addition to my UX knowledge, I could leverage my location in EMEA and hit up customer events more quickly and easily. Those local user groups do like to hear the voice of locals too you know (so I need to work on that mid-Atlantic accent). I'm looking forward to such opportunities. The training was all smashing stuff, just the right level of detail, delivered professionally and with great style and humor. I was especially honored to be paired off for my er, coaching with Debra Lilley (@debralilley), who shared with everyone all kinds of tips and insights from her experiences of delivering the message and demo. For me, that was the real power of the FXA event--the communal, conversational aspect--the meeting up with people who had done all this for real, the sharing in their experiences, while learning along with other newbies. Sorry, but that all-important social aspect doesn't work so well with remote meetings. Katie Candland (Apps-UX) gave us a great tour of the Fusion Apps demo and included some useful presentational tips too (any excuse to buy that iPad). It's clear to me that the Fusion Apps messaging and demos really come alive with real-world examples that local application users will recognize, and I picked up some "yes, that's my job made easier" scene-stealers from Debra and Karen Brownfield too, to add to the great ones already provided. This power of examples shouldn't surprise anyone, they've long been a mainstay of applications user assistance, popular with users. We'll offer customers different types of example topics in the Fusion Apps online help too (stay tuned), and we know from research how important those 3S's (stories, scenarios, and simulations) are to users when they consume and apply information. Well, we've got the simulation, now it's time for more stories and scenarios. If you get a chance to participate in an FXA event (whether you are an Oracle employee or otherwise), I'd encourage it. It's committing your time and energy for sure, but I got real bang for the buck from it for my everyday job too. Listening to the room's feedback on the application demo really brought our internal design work to life, and I picked up on some things that I need to follow up on (like how you alphabetically sort stuff in other languages). User experience is after all, about users. What will I be doing next, and what would I like to see happen? Obviously, I need to develop my story-telling links with the people I met in Long Beach and do some practicing with the materials, and then get out there and deliver them at a suitable location. The demo is what it is right now, and that's a super-rich demo that I know everyone will want to see and ask questions about. Then, as mentioned by attendees at the FXA event, follow up on those translated and localized messages for EMEA (and APAC), that deal with different statutory or reporting requirements of the target markets. Given my background I would say that, wouldn't I? However, language is part of the UX, and international revenue is greater than US-only revenue for Oracle, so yes dear, we all need to get over the fact that enterprise apps users don't all speak, or want to speak, American-English. Most importantly perhaps, the continued development of a strong messaging community between Oracle and partners and customers where we can swap and share those FXA messaging stories and scenarios about Fusion Apps in a conversational way. The more the better, a combination of online and face-to-face meetings. I must also mention the great dinner after the event at Parker's Lighthouse, and the fun myself and Andrew Gilmour (Apps-UX) had at our end of the table talking about just about everything except Fusion Apps with Ronald Van Luttikhuizen and Ben Prusinski (who now understands the difference between Cork and Dublin people. I hope). Thanks to all the Apps-UXers who helped bring the FXA training to town, and to Debra and all the others that I am too jetlagged to mention right who were instrumental in making it happen for me. Here's to the next one. And the Walmart angle? That was me doing my Robert Scoble (ScO'bilizer?)-style guerilla smart phone research in Walmart in Long Beach, before the FXA event.   • Configure Jenkins and Tomcat using Puppet

    I'm trying to setup Spring dev environment (jenkins, tomcat) on Vagrant. What I really want to achieve is to limit config to only Puppet scripts, so I can share it with my colleagues and work together on the same environment. So far I managed to set up simple scripts to install jenkins, tomcat and so on, they work fine. What about jenkins configuration though? I'm pretty green in jenkins usage and configuration, not sure if I'm doing it the right way... I found this article and I want to migrate whole setup described in it to Puppet. Any ideas? Thanks.

    This simple hack combines the swing arms of two IKEA work lamps with a set of computer speakers for flexible and easily adjustable sound. IKEAHackers reader Bill Dwyer wanted an easy way to get the speakers off his desk but still be able to easily adjust them. By hacking apart two IKEA work lamps (he removed the light assembly and snipped the wires off) he was able to attach his computer speakers to the arms and, in the process, get them off the desk.   • Blu-ray player?

    I'd like to play bluray discs in my laptop. I found the official documentation, and there it's explained that one should use mplayer and ffmpeg. Looking at the repositories, there exist two different mplayer packages (in conflict with each other) mplayer mplayer2 Any ideas with of them should I install? On the other hand the official documentation seems to be out of date since no mention to Ubuntu after 9.04 is done. Does the DumpHD package from the repositories work? Finally, Where could the keydb.cfg keys be found? I'm open to suggestions, specially of people who had done the job of making it work. Cheers

  • Problems with HP laptop

    So the problem is...every time I reboot or shutdown laptop and when the laptop is booting again I get screen (before loading OS) that HP discovered overheating and system went into hibernate. But the point is that laptop is not overheating nor going into hibernate by itself. Also becouse of the hybrid graphic cards I cannot install additional drivers. Desktop resolution and all works perfectly but I cannot use unity 3D also openGL doesn't work as it should (with cairo docks) As i've read some posts, people say that switcheero doesn't work on 12.04 so I haven't tried it.

  • HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

    I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on).   • How do I restrict my kids' computing time?

    Access to our computer (not only to the internet) needs to be restricted for the accounts of my kids (7, 8) until they are old enough to manage this by themselves. Until then we need to be able to define the following: the hours of the day when computing is o.k. (e.g. 5 - 9 pm) the days of the week when computing is not o.k. (e.g. mondays to fridays) the amount of time allowed per day (e.g. 2 hours) In 11.10 all of the following that used to do the job don't work any more: Timekpr: for 11.10 not available through the ppa. The installed version from 11.04 does not work in 11.10. Timoutd: command line alternative, but in 11.10 removed from the repositories. Gnome Nanny: Looks great but repeatedly crashes to force restarting X-server. So we can't use or recommed this program at the moment. Are there any other alternatives?

  • Sound unavailable every other session

    On my desktop running Oneiric, sometimes there's no sound at all, but it would work normally at other times. My setup is built ground-up from minimal Ubuntu, but since sounds work fine, at times, I don't think it is a backend dependency issue. When it works, it will play anything from regular audio files and movies to YouTube Flash players. For the record, I installed LXDE with the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages which are the only audio-related dependencies for the lubuntu-desktop. For a while, I also used persistent Oneiric live USB, and do not recall any sound issues. It's one thing to not play sound entirely, but playing sound only under some very unclear circumstances is something else. Please help me diagnose it.

  • Group arrival steering

    I've got group movement implemented pretty much like this: http://www.red3d.com/cwr/steer/CrowdPath.html Basically, that's combining path following and separation. It works nicely as long as units are in transit, but arrival does not work very well at all. Right now, units just cease to use the path following component once the "exit" the path, i.e. when their closest point on the path is on or past the end. This leads to those units bumping into each other and also overshooting the point the player clicked. Ideally, I'd have the units arrive scattered around the finish point (and reasonable close to each other), not all clumped up past the finish line. I'd imagine that some kind of arrival steering might work here, but based on other units and a "fuzzy" classification of the end of the path. Is there any proven way to do this?

  • Script at Startup

    I'm using 10.10 and I need to run a script in order to get a windows-like international keyboard layout - basically, it changes how dead keys work. (Original script from this page http://t.tam.atbh.us/en/win-us-intl-4-linux/ ) Since I can't seem to manage to get it going from boot, I have to run a custom script to launch any application. The script: export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim setxkbmap us intl xmodmap -e 'keycode 48 = dead_acute dead_diaeresis dead_acute dead_diaeresis acute diaeresis' application_name So if I put abiword in the application_name, it runs abiword respecting the keyboard script. Ideally, the original script would start at boot and then any applications I use would function with it - just like what happens if I run it first in Terminal (without the app_name line) and then run apps from it. I tried to make the script run from boot by adding it to /etc/rc.local but to no avail. Tried to add it to init.d but that also didn't work. If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

  • How can I recursively change the permissions of files and directories?

    I have ubuntu installed on my local computer with apache / php / mysql. I now have a directory at /var/www - inside which I have several of my ongoing projects. I also work with opensource ( drupal, magento, sugarcrm ). The problem I am facing is changing file permission with terminal. Sometime I need to change the permission of entire folder and its subsequent sub-folders and files. I have to individually change using sudo chmod 777 foldername How can I do this recursively. Also why do I have to always do it 777, I tried 755 for folders and 644 for files, but that won't work.

  • Ubuntu won't suspend automatically any more

    In the last month or so, Ubuntu (12.04) has stopped sleeping automatically. I've gone to System Settings Power, and verified (and toggled) "suspend on inactive for" to 5 minutes (for both battery and "when plugged in"), but the system stays awake. I've also tried used code similar to $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 300 $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-timeout 300 to set the timeout values. I've also verified these in dconf Editor. Previously, I could set this quite low to make my computer sleep quickly, but now it no longer works either. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but under old versions of Ubuntu, if I wanted my computer to never suspend (via the CLI), I would also have to set $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac false At some point, this seemed to have been depreciated (and also gave me the error "No such key 'sleep-inactive-ac'"). I found that it it was enough to set sleep-inactive-ac-timeout to 0. This worked for a while, but at some point auto-suspend stopped working as stated above. Oddly enough, the sleep-inactive-ac key is still present when I look via dconf editor. However, when I click it, it says "no schema", and the summary, etc. fields are blank. To test if the dconf power plugin was working, I tried playing around with other settings in the schema. Idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work as expected . However, setting sleep-display-ac to 5 seconds has no effect. I'm also not sure if this is relevant, but I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver, and installed xscreensaver. I have tried killing xscreensaver and re-installing gnome-screensaver, but this did not help. I've also had some trouble with DPMS. I'm not sure if this is related, but I'll put the information here, just in case. Using xscreensaver, I set Power Management to enabled, with standby and suspend timeouts to 10 minutes. I've verified these settings in ~/.xscreensaver and xset q. However, the screen blanks after about 30 seconds. If I turn off DPMS (either via xscreensaver GUI or modifying ~/.xscreensaver), it won't blank at all, so I know that DPMS is partially reading the xscreensaver settings. -- edit I've attempted more troubleshooting, by creating a new user account, then logging out of the main account and into the new account. I've tried modifying the timeouts via dconf, but get the same results as above (i.e. it doesn't work, nor does sleep-display-ac, but idle-dim-time and idle-dim-ac work). Also, the depreciated sleep-display-ac key is not visible, so I think that this is probably unrelated. -- edit I've since moved to gnome-shell instead of unity, and still have this problem, so I guess that it's something to do with gnome-power-manager.

    Regarding growing of Behavior-Driven Development imposing acceptance testing, are use cases diagram useful or do they lead to an "over-documentation"? Indeed, acceptance tests representing specifications by example, as use cases promote despite of a more generic manner (since cases, not scenarios), aren't they too similar to treat them both at the time of a newly created project? From this link, one opinion is: Another realization I had is that if you do UseCases and automated AcceptanceTests you are essentially doubling your work. There is duplication between the UseCases and the AcceptanceTests. I think there is a good case to be made that UserStories + AcceptanceTests are more efficient way to work when compared to UseCases + AcceptanceTests. What to think about?

    I have written a small front-end to the Festival TTS system using Python/Django. I wish to deploy it on the Google App Engine cloud. A few questions: My application uses the Festival app 'text2wave'. Will is work on the cloud? I have used Python primitives like subprocess.call() to invoke the aforementioned program. Will that work? If your answer to any or both of (1) and (2) is no, is there a free api on the web that I can use (from the appengine)? I read somewhere about placing calls from Phono to a Voxeo backend, but I'm not sure what that means. I am aware of the Google Translate extension that allows translation using an HTTP GET (REST) request, but here the text is limited to 100 chars. Bad. Plus, they may take it down any point of time.

  • Moodle Inconsistencies, Flowplayer, or Server?

    We are trying to decide if an issue we're having with Moodle and our videos is a flowplayer issue, a video issue, or a network issue. Any input is welcome. We've had videos in our Moodle (version 1.9, we're working on an upgrade on a different server) up for weeks, or even months. After that time, some of them have suddenly just stopped working. When they don't work, they just don't load. The videos work when we first upload them. With flowplayer, we don't get errors, just a blank screen. We have re-uploaded our videos several times when this has happened, but we really would like to know what's causing it so that we can prevent it. There are also no keyframe issues with the video. We are currently trying to find answers through various searches, but have not had any luck. I will continue to post more info as I come across it...but if there's anyone who knows or has ideas, it's welcome.

Normally good universities like CMU, standford, MIT, Cornell are more interested in student's profile like research work, under graduate school etc. I am not passed out from very good university its ranked in top 20 of India only. Neither did i do research work till now. But being one of founding member of company and developing product for same, i want to know if this factor can help and to what extent. For university with ranking lower than 20 what matters most is GRE General score and GPA but i guess top university must be appreciating a person's real efforts.

    The problem is when I have to deal with a new framework\library\language it completely slows my work process, at first it's kind of shock, you're sitting on your place about a day doing nothing surfing the net, because you simply can't do anything even read docs, then, on the second day I realize that I definitely should do something and starting read about it, then I realize that I don't understand it, then I'm reading until I got feeling that I should show some results immediately and then I'm writing the code quite fast and the job doesn't seem to be difficult. Then job is done and I won't probably return to that technology\framework for a month or a year or never at all. And I will almost certainly forget almost everything about it after a month. To illustrate by checkpoints I experience: shock, long studying times, work with the new tech briefly, never use it afterwards, then I completely forget it. So what would be the solution here?

    I have a HP Pavillion G6 series 1225, i5 laptop with Radeon HD 6470M switchable VGA. i installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS but the VGA drivers don't work properly. I want to install drivers into the Ubuntu. But when I do it arrived error message like this: sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log I found a solution in a link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450 It works for a few steps and then in the installation of the package of the AMD driver, a message pops up 'fatal error' and it redirects me to Ask Ubuntu to find a solution, please help me, I need to make it work.
