  • Java EE@Princeton Java Meetup

    - by reza_rahman
On November 28th, I spoke at the Princeton Java Meetup Group. It's a well-organized group led by veteran Java champion Yakov Fain - I have spoken there numerous times. I did my Java EE 6 DDD talk (the same one from Java2Days 2012). Domain Driven Design with Java EE 6 from Reza Rahman The code examples are available here: https://blogs.oracle.com/reza/resource/dddsample.zip. Give me a shout if you would like to get it up and running. The talk went very well -- the official RSVP shows 33 attended. I gave away a few GlassFish T-shirts, laptop stickers and Arun Gupta's Java EE 6 pocket guide. More details on the talk here. I most certainly look forward to speaking there again.

  • How do I commit changes to a text file on button press?

    - by boywithaxe
I've written a small app that creates a GUI for setting up uShare. Currently it depends heavily on the 'w' (write) and 'a' (append) functions to generate/edit ushare.conf file. But I've been trying to find a way for the app to store all the changes until a save button is pressed, and only then committing them to the actual file. I think that would be the best way of getting around having the user press enter every time they change any field (and indeed allow for GtkCheckButton).

  • Windows Azure Horror Story: The Phantom App that Ate my Data

    - by jasont
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jasont/archive/2013/10/31/windows-azure-horror-story-the-phantom-app-that-ate-my.aspxI’ve posted in the past about how my company, Stackify, makes some great tools that enhance the Windows Azure experience. By just using the Azure Management Portal, you don’t get a lot of insight into what is happening inside your instances, which are just Windows VMs. This morning, I noticed something quite scary, and fittingly enough, it’s Halloween. I deleted a deployment after doing a new deployment and VIP swap. But, after a few minutes, the instance still appeared in my Stackify dashboard. I thought this odd, as we monitor these operations and remove devices that have been deleted. Digging in showed that it wasn’t a problem with Stackify. This instance was still there, and still sending data. You’ll notice though that the “Status” check shows that the instance no longer exists. And it gets scarier. I quickly checked the running services, and sure enough, the Windows Azure Guest Agent (which runs worker roles) was still running: “Surely, this can’t be” I’m thinking at this point. Knowing that this worker role is in our QA environment, it has debug logging turned on. And, using our log file tailing feature, I can see that, yes, indeed, this deleted deployment is still executing code. Pulling messages off queues. Sending alerts. Changing data. Fortunately, our tools give me the ability to manually disable the Windows service that runs this code. In the meantime, I have contacted everyone I know (and support) at Microsoft to address this issue. Needless to say, this is concerning. When you delete a deployment, it needs to actually delete. Not continue to eat your data. As soon as I learn more, I’ll be posting an update.

  • I want to learn how to help or contribute to Unity

    - by user17953
I am a college student studying computer science and would one day like to work on operating systems. The part of ubuntu that really interests me is Unity and I would like to study it and possibly contribute to it. I was reading the wiki pages about it and it was saying to get a copy of all the required components and then start hacking. Would it be wise to do this in a virtual machine with ubuntu on it? Do you have any advice on a good place to start? Do you know of any common pitfalls? Should I also post in the irc for this? Thanks

  • Video on Hyperion Tax Provision

    - by Lia Nowodworska - Oracle
( in via Jan) EPM Information Development has asked us to remind you about the new video available for Hyperion Tax Provision. You can view it on the OracleEPMWebcasts YouTube channel here: http://bit.ly/1jxLlCy An information rich 4:40 minutes of your time.  So please take a look. The video gives a brief overview of the main features of  Hyperion Tax Provision. You will learn ... That Tax Provision and reporting System builds on the Hyperion Financial Close Reporting Platform That much of the Tax Provision flow process is similar to the Financial Close Process and that the modules have been aligned to work together very closely. That HTP enables you to integrate Book- and Tax Reporting on a common platform. That It uses the technology of HFM, ties in with SmartView and can be used with Hyperion Financial Reporting. That the native integration between the Financial System and the Tax System creates transparency for the Tax Departments and removes bottlenecks in the tax process. More technical information can be found here: Oracle Hyperion Tax Provision Data Sheet Oracle Hyperion Tax Provision White Paper Oracle Hyperion Tax Provision Documentation If you have another 45 minutes to spare and want to get into greater detail, then you can check out the recording of an Advisor Webcast that we did earlier last year: You can find this via KM Doc Oracle Business Analytics Advisor Webcast Schedule and Archive Recordings (Doc ID 1456233.1) -> Select the Tab "Archived 2013" and it is the third from the top: "Oracle Hyperion Tax Provision - Features and Overview with Demo" If you have questions towards that Advisor Webcast, you may participate in the Community Discussion about it. • How to get rid of the background gradient of the inline GtkToolbar?

    - by Dima

Is there a way to apply CSS to get rid of it and make blend with regular window color? #!/usr/bin/python3 from gi.repository import Gtk button_names = [Gtk.STOCK_ABOUT, Gtk.STOCK_ADD, Gtk.STOCK_REMOVE, Gtk.STOCK_QUIT] buttons = [Gtk.ToolButton.new_from_stock(name) for name in button_names] toolbar = Gtk.Toolbar() toolbar.set_show_arrow(False) for button in buttons: toolbar.insert(button, -1) style_context = toolbar.get_style_context() style_context.add_class(Gtk.STYLE_CLASS_INLINE_TOOLBAR) grid = Gtk.Grid() grid.add(toolbar) label = Gtk.Label() grid.add(label) window = Gtk.Window() window.set_size_request(200, 50) window.add(grid) window.connect('delete-event', Gtk.main_quit) window.show_all() Gtk.main()

  • Ubuntu App Contest - Open Source Libraries

    - by Chao
I just found out about and started looking into the Ubuntu App Contest, and I wanted to double check the contest's stance on using open source libraries built by others that are freely available on the web. I read through the rules and some of the other Q&As, and it sounds like using these libraries would not be allowed (since it could mean the app isn't built from scratch, and the library would not be in the Ubuntu archive - although I could bundle the library with the app), and I just wanted to verify this assumption. Thanks! Chao

  • How can I schedule execution of a program?

    - by Bakhtiyor
Let's say I have a small "Hello World" Java program compiled in my home directory. I can run it with java helloWorld from my home directory and it executes without any problem. Now I need to schedule to execute this program let's say after 10mins from now. So, I am executing following commands on console: at now+10min warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh at> java helloWorld Press CTRL+D to finish So it is scheduled properly as I can see it with at -l command. But at this time nothing happens. Why? What is wrong with it? Because, if instead of scheduling the execution my own program I schedule executing of gedit command it opens it at a specified time. But with my own program it doesn't perform anything. How can I change the situation?

  • Are there any specific workflows or design patterns that are commonly used to create large functional programming applications?

    - by Andrew
I have been exploring Clojure for a while now, although I haven't used it on any nontrivial projects. Basically, I have just been getting comfortable with the syntax and some of the idioms. Coming from an OOP background, with Clojure being the first functional language that I have looked very much into, I'm naturally not as comfortable with the functional way of doing things. That said, are there any specific workflows or design patterns that are common with creating large functional applications? I'd really like to start using functional programming "for real", but I'm afraid that with my current lack of expertise, it would result in an epic fail. The "Gang of Four" is such a standard for OO programmers, but is there anything similar that is more directed at the functional paradigm? Most of the resources that I have found have great programming nuggets, but they don't step back to give a broader, more architectural look.

  • Stacked Launcher Item Double Click Behaviour on Alt-tab

    - by Brandon Bertelsen
Let's say that you have multiple firefox windows open. What you see happen is an additional arrow points to it's icon in the launcher. However, if you double click the icon, it displays all of the windows in a spread out fashion, similar to the behaviour from pushing Super + W, but only for that program group. Is it possible to make this window spreading behaviour occur with alt-tab? PS: No idea what tags I should use, or if the language (jargon) in the title or question is appropriate.

  • Ubuntu App Submission won't allow the "free" bubble to be checked

    - by Compt
I am at the final stages of the Ubuntu App Developer Showdown, and I'm right at the point where I am submitting my app. The problem I run in to however, is that even though buy is at $0.00, it will not allow me to click on the "free" button, and keep that configuration saved. So when I go to "preview your app", it shows it saying "USD $0.00 ---- Buy" instead of saying "Free ---- Install". So I was wondering if it makes any difference or not.
