• Secret of SQL Trace Duration Column

  Why would a trace of long-running queries not show all queries that exceeded the specified duration filter?  We have a server-side SQL Trace that includes RPC:Completed and SQL:BatchCompleted events with a filter on Duration >= 100000.  Nearly all of the queries on this busy OLTP server run in under this 100 millisecond threshold so any that appear in the trace are candidates for root cause analysis and/or performance tuning opportunities. After an application experienced query timeouts, the DBA looked at the trace data to corroborate the problem.  Surprisingly, he found no long-running queries in the trace from the application that experienced the timeouts even though the application’s error log clearly showed detail of the problem (query text, duration, start time, etc.).  The trace did show, however, that there were hundreds of other long-running queries from different applications during the problem timeframe.  We later determined those queries were blocked by a large UPDATE query against a critical table that was inadvertently run during this busy period. So why didn’t the trace include all of the long-running queries?  The reason is because the SQL Trace event duration doesn’t include the time a request was queued while awaiting a worker thread.  Remember that the server was under considerable stress at the time due to the severe blocking episode.  Most of the worker threads were in use by blocked queries and new requests were queued awaiting a worker to free up (a DMV query on the DAC connection will show this queuing: “SELECT scheduler_id, work_queue_count FROM sys.dm_os_schedulers;”).  Technically, those queued requests had not started.  As worker threads became available, queries were dequeued and completed quickly.  These weren’t included in the trace because the duration was under the 100ms duration filter.  The duration reflected the time it took to actually run the query but didn’t include the time queued waiting for a worker thread. The important point here is that duration is not end-to-end response time.  Duration of RPC:Completed and SQL:BatchCompleted events doesn’t include time before a worker thread is assigned nor does it include the time required to return the last result buffer to the client.  In other words, duration only includes time after the worker thread is assigned until the last buffer is filled.  But be aware that duration does include the time need to return intermediate result set buffers back to the client, which is a factor when large query results are returned.  Clients that are slow in consuming results sets can increase the duration value reported by the trace “completed” events.

  I have wrote an application that syncs two folders together. The problem with the program is that it stops responding whilst copying files. A quick search of stack-overflow told me I need to use something called a background worker. I have read a few pages on the net about this but find it really hard to understand as I'm pretty new to programming. Below is the code for my application - how can I simply put all of the File.Copy(....) commands into their own background worker (if that's even how it works)? Below is the code for the button click event that runs the sub procedure and the sub procedure I wish to use a background worker on all the File.Copy lines. • How to debug lag using Bluetooth connected mouse and A2DP headset?

  I own a Logitech M555b mouse (since a week) for use with my HP Elitebook 8570w laptop running Kubuntu 12.04. Works fine right after connecting using the KDE Bluetooth control module. However, after some time (seemingly random), it starts to lag. Movements are being delayed for roughly 500ms for a short period of time. Usually it recovers after some time too, but it can take minutes. All actions are being delayed: movements, click, scrolls. Additionally, the movements can be choppy during these times. A workaround that always works for the same short period of time is to disconnect an re-connect the mouse. This can be done using the same KDE Bluetooth control module. What did I try already? Check the mouse's batteries (it's just a week old, other new batteries: same result) Checking logs and kernel messages about Bluetooth-related entries: none aside the expected messages on connect time. I'm running kernel 3.5.0-13-generic as provided in the xorg-edgers PPA. Booting the regular 3.2 Precise kernel results in the same behaviour. Some other information that may help: It happens when no other Bluetooth connections are active on the machine. Similar symptoms also occur on my Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) headset, but then it's audio lagging and skipping. Swapping Bluetooth profiles as described here then helps. Conclusion: it's not the mouse that's faulty. The headset always worked fine using my now dead Thinkpad T61p with built-in Bluetooth. The bluetooth module in my laptop is connected via USB and shows up as Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21e1 Broadcom Corp. I'm mobile and several people around me are using Bluetooth at work (A2DP mostly). It also occurs at home, where my neighbours are probably using Bluetooth as well. It could just be radio interference, but I think Bluetooth connections should just hop to another channel. And, moreover, it just works properly instantly when re-connecting. Therefore I think it's a software driver issue and I'd like to debug it. Is there any way to get more verbose logging on the Bluetooth(-hid) modules?

• Should Exterrnal USB hard drive auto mount Ubuntu 12.04.01 LTS

  I want to have external USB hard drives automatically mounted when plugged in. I have 2 drives exactly the same except for volume label. They both have the same UUID. I want to be easily able to swap them as I'm using them for backups and want to keep 1 at home for off site backup. I've set up the /etc/fstab so they should mount at different places based on their volume label: /etc/fstab : LABEL=Passport1 /media/Passport1 ntfs defaults,windows_names,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 LABEL=Passport2 /media/Passport2 ntfs defaults,windows_names,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 blkid shows : ... /dev/sdc1: LABEL="Passport2" UUID="4E1AEA7B1AEA6007" TYPE="ntfs" /dev/sdd1: LABEL="Passport1" UUID="4E1AEA7B1AEA6007" TYPE="ntfs" They both mount automatically during reboot but do not mount when just plugged in to a running system. I've read lots of stuff about this, much of it is old so I'm not sure if it applies. I've read some stuff that says the mounts should happen automatically when plugged in, and lots of other stuff that says you have to install other software to make this happen, although much of it just seems to set up the fstab. What's the real story? • Ubuntu 12.04 share the internet over WiFi from wvdial?

  I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a separate partition on my hard drive so I can dual boot to either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I am living in Japan and so I'm using a mobile broadband USB device called "Softbank C02LC". By default it seems that this device isn't recognised so I did the following: Terminal: sudo su nano /usr/bin/usbModemScript Nano: #!/bin/bash echo 1c9e 9900 > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id Terminal: chmod +x /usr/bin/usbModemScript nano /etc/udev/rules.d/option.rules Nano: ATTRS{idVendor}=="1c9e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9900", RUN+="/usr/bin/usbModemScript" ATTRS{idVendor}=="1c9e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9900", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe option" which made the device visible from the network manager etc. However even though I set up my details correctly when I created a new connection (Correct username, APN etc) as soon as I try to connect it almost immediately disconnects. Because of this I then followed the instructions at this site: http://debugitos.main.jp/index.php?Ubuntu%2F%A5%E2%A5%D0%A5%A4%A5%EB%A5%A4%A5%F3%A5%BF%A1%BC%A5%CD%A5%C3%A5%C8 And I ended up using the c02lc_connect script at the bottom of the page to connect to the internet. But we also have 1 more laptop here which I need to share the internet connection with. In Windows 7 I do this with the Connectify program, and in Ubuntu I have seen that you can do things like set up hotspots etc. But because I am using WvDial I am not sure how I would share the internet. I am only beginning to use Ubuntu but unfortunately until I can figure out how to share the internet over WiFi when connected via WvDial I have to stick with Windows. If you have any ideas on how to do this it would be much appreciated!

After an upgrade, you always want to make sure that the compatibility options (which have much to do with how NULLs and other objects are treated) is at what you expect. For the most part, as long as the application can handle it, I set my compatibility levels to the latest version. For SQL Server 2008, that was “10.0” or “10”. You can do this with the ALTER DATABASE command or you can just right-click the database and select “Properties” and then “Database Options” in SQL Server Management Studio. To check the database compatibility level, I use this query: SELECT name, cmptlevel FROM sys.sysdatabases When I did that this morning I saw that the databases (all of them) were at 10.0 – not 10.5 like the Instance. That’s expected – we didn’t revise the database format up with the Instance for this particular release. Didn’t want to catch you by surprise on that. While your databases should be at the “proper” level for your situation, you can’t rely on the compatibility level to indicate the Instance level.   Ah!  When you shoot yourself in the foot... a few times... it hurts! That's what I did on Sunday, to learn more about the behavior of the SQL Azure Denial Of Service prevention feature. This article is a short follow up to my last post on this feature. In this post, I will outline some of the lessons learned that were the result of testing the behavior of SQL Azure from two machines. From the standpoint of SQL Azure, they look like one machine since they are behind a NAT. All logins affected The first thing to note is that all the logins are affected. If you lock yourself out to a specific database, none of the logins will work on that database. In fact the database size becomes "--" in the SQL Azure Portal.   Less than 100 sessions I was able to see 50+ sessions being made in SQL Azure (by looking at sys.dm_exec_sessions) before being locked out. The the DoS feature appears to be triggered in part by the number of open sessions. I could not determine if the lockout is triggered by the speed at which connection requests are made however.   Other Databases Unaffected This was interesting... the DoS feature works at the database level. Other databases were available for me to use.   Just Wait Initially I thought that going through SQL Azure and connecting from there would reset the database and allow me to connect again. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case. You will have to wait. And the more you lock yourself out, the more you will have to wait... The first time the database became available again within 30 seconds or so; the second time within 2-3 minutes and the third time... within 2-3 hours...   Successful Logins The DoS feature appears to engage only for valid logins. If you have a login failure, it doesn't seem to count. I ran a test with over 100 login failures without being locked.

I found my USB drive on Port 2, Hub 3, i just don't know how that relates to the Bus and Device numbers of linux. In windows, Smart card reader was on USB hub located at port 1 hub 2, fingerprint and bluetooth were on USB hub located at port 1 hub 1 EDIT 3: Went and looked at this SO post. Tried to look at my kern.log file with tail -f /var/log/kern.log. Got some activity when plugging/removing devices in other ports, but nothing happens when connecting a device into that port. It really looks disabled. Looked at my usb1-4 sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control and they are all set on auto. As expected, usb4 have version 3.00, the others (usb1-usb3) are 2.00.

• SQL error C# - Parameter already defined

  Hey there. I have a c# application that parses txt files and imports the data from them into a sql db. I was using sqlite and am now working on porting it to sql server. It was working fine with sqlite but now with sql i am getting an error when it is processing the files. It added the first row of data to the db and then says "parameter @PartNumber has already been declared. Variable names must be unique within a batch or stored procedure". Here is my whole code and SQL table layout ... the error comes at the last insertCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() instance at the end of the code...   I have a multi lan port box that install ubuntu server 11.10. My problem was, each subnet machine can't ping each other. for example. 192.168.11.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 192.168.31.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 I am also try to using route add -net 192.168.11.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.11.1 (and also 192.168.21.0/192.168.31.0) at this multi-lan-port machine. But still won't work. Does anyone can help ? Thanks.

• Why doesn't Ubuntu detect my second hard drive?

  I am new to Linux and to Ubuntu, I was wondering, I have two hard drives setup in SATA ports (non-raid, at least I don't think they are). I installed ubuntu unto the drives fresh without any previous versions or windows at all. However when I got the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS working, all I see is 1 x 120 gigabyte harddrive. Also, not sure if this is important or not, my hard drives are SSD. • How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time.
