• Java IDE written in pure Java?

  Is there a Java IDE written in Java? I just got my year 9 DET laptop today at school, and there are all sorts of restrictions set in place. Somewhat annoyingly, you cannot run any executable other than the ones already installed on the system (for some reason they haven't disabled the use of Command Prompt, PowerShell, or strangely enough, regedit). They allow you to run Java executables, so I thought that would be the only way to be able to program on my crappy laptop at school (when I have finished all my work, naturally) :D Edit: By written in Java, I also mean that the executable, that is used to run the program, has the file extension ".jar", thus running on the JVM. Edit 2: I tried the DrJava IDE, and it worked great, thanks (I can compile and execute programs)! Regarding running Eclipse as through the command line using the command "java -jar "C:/Users.../org.eclipse..."". This results in an error producing a log saying file, the main error is: MESSAGE An error occurred while automatically activating bundle org.eclipse.ui.workbench (182). How do I fix this error (I much perfer working with Eclipse than any other IDE)? Edit 3: Regarding my last edit, just disregard it :D. I fixed the problem by downloading the latest version of Eclipse.

• Roadmap for Thinktecture IdentityServer

  I got asked today if I could publish a roadmap for thinktecture IdentityServer (idrsv in short). Well – I got a lot of feedback after B1 and one of the biggest points here was the data access layer. So I made two changes: I moved to configuration database access code to EF 4.1 code first. That makes it much easier to change the underlying database. So it is now just a matter of changing the connection string to use real SQL Server instead of SQL Compact. Important when you plan to do scale out. I included the ASP.NET Universal Providers in the download. This adds official support for SQL Azure, SQL Server and SQL Compact for the membership, roles and profile features. Unfortunately the Universal Provider use a different schema than the original ASP.NET providers (that sucks btw!) – so I made them optional. If you want to use them go to web.config and uncomment the new provider. Then there are some other small changes: The relying party registration entries now have added fields to add extra data that you want to couple with the RP. One use case could be to give the UI a hint how the login experience should look like per RP. This allows to have a different look and feel for different relying parties. I also included a small helper API that you can use to retrieve the RP record based on the incoming WS-Federation query string. WS-Federation single sign out is now conforming to the spec. I made certificate based endpoint identities for SSL endpoints optional. This caused some problems with configuration and versioning of existing clients. I hope I can release the RC in the next days. If there are no major issues, there will be RTM very soon!

  Here's a plain old JTable on the NetBeans Platform. Whenever the toolbar button is clicked, information about the currently selected row is displayed in the status bar: Normally, the above would be achieved in NetBeans Platform applications via Nodes publishing their underlying business object when the selection changes. In this case, there are no Nodes at all. There's only a JTable and a DefaultTableModel, i.e., all pure Java Swing. So, how does it work? • How to talk a client out of a Flash website?

  I have recently been doing a bunch of web side projects through word of mouth recommendations only. Although I am much more a of a programmer than a designer by any means, my design skills are not terrible, and do not hate dealing with UI like many programmers. As a result, I find myself lured into a bunch of side projects where aside from a minimal back end for content administration, most of the programming is on front end interfaces (read javascript/css). By far the biggest frustration I have had is convincing clients that they do not want Flash. Aside the fact that I really do not enjoy Flash "development", there are many practical reasons why Flash is not desirable (lack of compatibility across devices, decreased client accessibility, plug-in requirements, increased development time, etc.). Instead of just flat out telling the clients "I will not build you a flash website", I would much rather use tactics to convince/explain to them that this is not what they actually want, ie: meet their requirements any better than standard html/css/js and distract users from their content. What kind of first hand experience do others have with this? How do you explain to someone that javascript/css/AJAX is usually a better option for most websites? Why do people want to use Flash so bad to begin with? This question pertains to clients who do not have any technical reasons for wanting flash, but just want it because they think it makes pretty websites.

• Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data. • Java language book for an experienced programmer?

  I am looking for book to get up to speed with (start with) a Java language. I am experienced (more than 15 years) C# and C++ programmer with a bit of Python, so I don't need a book which starts with a programming concepts for a beginner. In fact I think I need a "Java language specification" sort of book. I checked the answers to questions similar to mine and found that there two books which is being recommended most: "Effective Java" and "Sun Certified Java Programmer". After a quick look at the "Effective Java" I realised it should not be a book to start with, it is a good book (I read all books in Effective C++, STL series and liked them but they are more "good practices" books, rather than a book for a beginners) "Sun Certified Java Programmer" looks closer to what I am after - but goes too slow for me. So I did some more search and found these two books: The Java(TM) Language Specification by Gosling himself Java™ Programming Language, The (4th Edition) by Ken Arnold I gather the first one a little bit dated and the second one is the best Java Language Reference books up to date, but I am not sure - as I am not a Java person to make such judgements. After reading the language reference book I will start learning the basic libraries / packages / namespaces (collections, algorithms, IO, etc) and then something about UI architecture. But that will come later. Question: - which Java Language reference book for an experienced programmer you can recomend ? and why? Cheers.

  At the UKOUG conference back in December, at the Tools Roundtable session someone told me that they hadn't chosen Oracle ADF as their development environement for their future projects.  When I asked why, the response I got was "no one told us about it".  I was pretty astounded (even gobsmacked!) that the technology that is the foundation of Oracle's future applications strategy wasn't on someone's radar. • Brand New Annotations Support

  Hi all! Today we would like to introduce you our brand new annotation support for NetBeans 7.2. The first thing which is different is the look of annotations in code completion. As you can see, there is a new annotation icon and an annotation type. Because we have a lot of modules with their own annotations, we differ them in code completion window by their type. We support annotations for: ApiGen (legacy PHPDoc annotations), PHPUnit, Doctrine 2 (ORM and ODM) and Symfony 2. Every annotation can be associated with some context. We recognize four of them: function, class/interface (type), method and field. It means that you will get just proper annotations for your class field as well as your global function. Do you have your own annotations? Or do you simply miss some? There is nothing hard to add it in there. We have a simple UI for adding your custom annotations! It's in Tools -> Options -> PHP -> Annotations. Here you can simply add, edit or delete your annotations. When you try to create new one, all fields are prefilled by some default values. So you really don't have to remember "how to use that crazy freemarker syntax". If you are satisfied with your new annotation, you can see it in a code completion window among other annotations. As you can see it has its own "Custom" type. IDisposable in ViewModelBase was a bad practice, because it supposes that the ViewModel is garbage collected after Dispose is called. instead, the Cleanup method does not have such expectation. The ViewModelLocator class (created when an MVVM Light project template is used in Visual Studio or Expression Blend) exposes a static Cleanup method, which should in turn call each ViewModel’s Cleanup method. The ViewModel is free to override the Cleanup method if local cleanup must be performed. Passing EventArgs to command with EventToCommand The EventToCommand class is used to bind any event to an ICommand (typically on the ViewModel). In this case, it can be useful to pass the event’s EventArgs parameter to the command in the ViewModel. For example, for the MouseEnter event, you can pass the MouseEventArgs to a RelayCommand<MouseEventArgs> as shown in the next listings. Note: Bringing UI specific classes (such as EventArgs) into the ViewModel reduces the testability of the ViewModel, and thus should be used with care. This bug is now corrected. New in V3 The following features have been added after V2. Sending messages with callback Certain classes have been added to the GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Messaging namespace, allowing sending a message and getting a callback from the recipient. These classes are: NotificationMessageWithCallback: Base class for messages with callback. NotificationMessageAction: A class with string notification, and a parameterless callback. NotificationMessageAction<T>: A class with string notification, and a callback with a parameter of type T. Sending messages to interfaces In V2, it was possible to deliver messages targeted to instances of a given class. in V3 it is still possible, but in addition you can deliver a message to instances that implement a certain interface. The message will not be delivered to other recipients. Use the overload Messenger.Default.Send<TMessage, TTarget>(TMessage message) where TTarget is, in fact, an interface (for example IDisposable). Of course the recipient must register to receive the type of message TMessage. Sending messages with a token Messages can now be sent through the Messenger with a token. To send a message with token, use the method overload Send<TMessage>(TMessage message, object token). To receive a message with token, use the methods Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, Action<TMessage> action) or Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, bool receiveDerivedMessagesToo, Action<TMessage> action) The token can be a simple value (int, string, etc…) or an instance of a class. The message is not delivered to recipients who registered with a different token, or with no token at all. Renaming CommandMessage to NotificationMessage To avoid confusion with ICommand and RelayCommand, the CommandMessage class has been renamed to NotificationMessage. This message class can be used to deliver a notification (of type string) to a recipient. ViewModelBase constructor with IMessenger The ViewModelBase class now accepts an IMessenger parameter. If this constructor is used instead of the default empty constructor, the IMessenger passed as parameter will be used to broadcast a PropertyChangedMessage when the method RaisePropertyChanged<T>(string propertyName, T oldValue, T newValue, bool broadcast) is used. In the default ViewModelBase constructor is used, the Messenger.Default instance will be used instead. EventToCommand behavior The EventToCommand behavior has been added in V3. It can be used to bind any event of any FrameworkElement to any ICommand (for example a RelayCommand located in the ViewModel). More information about the EventToCommand behavior can be found here and here. Updated the project templates to remove the sample application The project template has been updated to remove the sample application that was created every time that a new MVVM Light application was created in Visual Studio or Blend. This makes the creation of a new application easier, because you don’t need to remove code before you can start writing code. Bug corrections Some bugs that were in Version 2 have been corrected: In some occasions, an exception could be thrown when a recipient was registered for a message at the same time as a message was received. New names for DLLs If you upgrade an existing installation, you will need to change the reference to the DLLs in C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries. The assemblies have been moved, and the versions for Silverlight 4 and for WPF4 have been renamed, to avoid some confusion. It is now easier to make sure that you are using the correct DLL.   If you are having troubles (shown below) when you publish your access database to https SharePoint2010 site with self-signed certificate. Problem: First you are getting a warning see the screenshot below: And then getting the error message: Solution: The error “The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site” comes when the ‘common name’ in the certificate doesn’t match the address you provided in browser to access the site. To fix the problem , you need to use script to generate the certificate rather than using the IIS UI, this is because it will default the common name to the server name and you will have the above problem when using that certificate to a different host-name web application. • Can't use the hardware scissor any more, should I use the stencil buffer or manually clip sprites?

  I wrote a simple UI system for my game. There is a clip flag on my widgets that you can use to tell a widget to clip any children that try to draw outside their parent's box (for scrollboxes for example). The clip flag uses glScissor, which is fed an axis aligned rectangle. I just added arbitrary rotation and transformations to my widgets, so I can rotate or scale them however I want. Unfortunately, this breaks the scissor that I was using as now my clip rectangle might not be axis aligned. There are two ways I can think of to fix this: either by using the stencil buffer to define the drawable area, or by having a wrapper function around my sprite drawing function that will adjust the vertices and texture coords of the sprites being drawn based on the clipper on the top of a clipper stack. Of course, there may also be other options I can't think of (something fancy with shaders possibly?). I'm not sure which way to go at the moment. Changing the implementation of my scissor functions to use the stencil buffer probably requires the smallest change, but I'm not sure how much overhead that has compared to the coordinate adjusting or if the performance difference is even worth considering.

My problem is I feel like I need to inject the IDataService into the Entity object so that it promotes loose coupling. Here are the two options that I'm struggling with: Not use a static method and use a member method on the BlogPost entity. Have the BlogPost take an IDataService in the constructor and use dependency injection to resolve the BlogPost instance and the IDataService implementation. Don't use the entity to call the IDataService. Put the IDataService in the constructor of the ViewModel and use my container to resolve the IDataService when the viewmodel is instantiated. So with option one the layers will look like this ViewModel(Presentation layer) - Entity (Domain layer) - IDataService (Service Layer) or ViewModel(Presentation layer) - IDataService (Service Layer)

• With which class to start Test Driven Development of card game application? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests?

  I have started to write card game applications. Some model classes: CardSuit, CardValue, Card Deck, IDeckCreator, RegularDeckCreator, DoubleDeckCreator Board Hand and some game classes: Turn, TurnHandler IPlayer, ComputerPlayer, HumanPlayer IAttackStrategy, SimpleAttachStrategy, IDefenceStrategy, SimpleDefenceStrategy GameData, Game are already written. My idea is to create engine, where two computer players could play game and then later I could add UI part. Already for some time I'm reading about Test Driven Development (TDD) and I have idea to start writing application from scratch, as currently I have tendency to write not needed code, which seems usable in future. Also code doesn't have any tests and it is hard to add them now. Seems that TDD could improve all these issue - minimum of needed code, good test coverage and also could help to come to right application design. But I have one issue - I can't decide from where to start TDD? Should I start from bottom - Card related classes or somewhere on top - Game, TurnHandler, ... ? With which class you would start? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests? (use the card game you know the best) I would like to start TDD with your help and then continue on my own!

• Help in (re)designing my Swing application

  I have developed a Swing application that controls execution of several script like jobs. I need to display the interim output of the jobs concurrently. I have followed MVC while writing the application. The application is working as expected. But off late I have the following requirements in hand: A few of the script jobs need special user privileges to execute so as to access specialized resources. There seems to be now way in Java to impersonate as a different user while running an application.[examined in this question]. Also trying to run the Swing application as a scheduled task in windows is not helping. Once started the jobs should be running even if the user logs off after starting the jobs. I am thinking of separating the execution logic from the UI and run that as a service; and introduce JMS in between the two layers so as to store/retrieve the interim the output. Note: I need to run this application on windows Any ideas on meeting my requirements will be highly appreciated.

• Getting rid of Massive View Controller in iOS?

  I had a discussion with my colleague about the following problem. We have an application where we need filtering functionality. On any main screen within the upper navigation bar, there is a button in the upper right corner. Once you touch that button, an custom written Alert View like view will pop up modally, behind it a semitransparent black overlay view. In that modal view, there is a table view of options, and you can choose one exclusively. Based on your selection, once this modal view is closed, the list of items in the main view is filtered. It is simply a modally presented filter to filter the main table view.This UI design is dictated by the design department, I cannot do anything about it so let accept this as a premise. Also the main filter button in the navbar will change colours to indicate that the filter is active. The question I have is about implementation. I suggested to my colleague that we create a separate XYZFilter class that will be an instance created by the main view controller acquire the filtering options handle saving and restoration of its state - i.e. last filter selected provide its two views - the overlay view and the modal view be the datasource for the table in its modal view. For some unknown reason, my colleague was not impressed by that approach at all. He simply wants to do these functionalities in the main view controller, maybe out of being used to do this in the past like that :-/ Is there any fundamental problem with my approach? I want to keep the view controller small, not to have spaghetti code create a reusable component (for use outside the project) have more object oriented, decoupled approach. prevent duplication of code as we need the filtering in two different places but it looks the same in both.. Any advice?

• Code Measuring and Metrics Tools?

  I'm in the process of setting up a build server for personal projects. This server will handle all the normal CI stuff, including running large suites of tests (unit, integration, automated UI). While I'm working out the kinks for including code coverage output with MSTest, it occurs to me that there may be lots of tools out there which give me additional metrics other than just code coverage. FxCop comes to mind as an example. Though I'm sure there are others. Anything that can generate useful reportable data and metrics would be good. Whether it's class dependency charts (looking for Law of Demeter violations, for example), analyses of the uses of classes/functions (looking for a function that isn't used in the system other than just the tests, for example), and so on. I'm not sure the right way to formulate the question, since polling questions or "What's your favorite code analysis tool" aren't very good. But I'm essentially just looking for recommendations on what metrics to gather and the tools that can gather them. The eventual vision for something like this is to have the CI server run a bunch of automated tests and analysis tools and track performance metrics over time. Imagine a dashboard full of graphs plotting these metrics over time. The lines should all relatively be at an equilibrium, and if one starts to stray toward the negative then it's an early indication of problems with the code. In the age old struggle to quantify code quality with management, this sounds like a potentially helpful means of doing just that.

• Where to find and install ASUS motherboard drivers for Linux

  This is my second day ever with Linux, and I had one heck of a time getting the nVidia drivers installed and working. Please, keep in mind I am very new and just starting out. I currently have an ASUS P8Z68-V LE motherboard and I'm not sure if the drivers are installed. Where would I go to find that out? I am using Gnome as my UI. If I don't have the drivers installed, where would I go? The ASUS site only gives me options to download for various Windows OS, DOS and "other" (in .ROM format). Which should I take and how should I install? I'm mostly looking for audio drivers. A lot of music I play, either on YouTube or with VLC has a faint crackling in the background on Ubuntu, which gets much worse the higher I turn the volume up. Could this be something other than the drivers? I doubt it's the hardware since the sound seems fine on Windows. I am currently running 12.04.

• How do I convince my team that a requirements specification is unnecessary if we adopt user-stories?

  We are planning to adopt user-stories to capture stakeholder 'intent' in a lightweight fashion rather than a heavy SRS (software requirements specifications). However, it seems that though they understand the value of stories, there is still a desire to 'convert' the stories into an SRS-like language with all the attributes, priorities, input, outputs, source, destination etc. User-stories 'eliminate' the need for a formal SRS like artifact to begin with so what's the point in having an SRS? How should I convince my team (who are all very qualified CS folks by the way - both by education and practice) that the SRS would be 'eliminated' if we adopted user-stories for capturing the functional requirements of the system? (NFRs etc can be captured too, but that's not the intent of the question). So here's my 'work-flow' argument: Capture initial requirements as user-stories and later elaborate them to use-cases (which are required to be documented at a low level i.e. describing interactions with the UI prototypes/mockups and are a deliverable post deployment). Thus going from user-stories to use-cases rather than user-stories to SRS to use-cases. How are you all currently capturing user-stories at your workplace (if at all) and how do you suggest I 'make a case' for absence of SRS in presence of user-stories?

• Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

  I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

• Crawling a Content Folio

  Content Folios in WebCenter Content allow you to assemble, track, and access a logical group of documents and/or links.  It allows you to manage them as just a list of items (simple folio) or organized as a hierarchy (advanced folio).  The built-in UI in content server allows you to work with these folios, but publishing them or consuming them externally can be a bit of a challenge.   The folios themselves are actually XML files that contain the structure, attributes, and pointers to the content items.  So to publish this somewhere, such as a Site Studio page, you could perhaps use an XML parser to traverse the structure and create your output.  But XML parsers are not always the easiest or most efficient to use.  In order to more easily crawl and consume a Content Folio, Ed Bryant - Principal Sales Consultant, wrote a component to do just that.  His component adds a service which does all the work for you and returns the folio structure as a simple resultset.  So consuming and publishing that folio on a Site Studio page or in your portal using RIDC is a breeze!  For example, let's take an advanced Content Folio example like this: If we look at the native file, the XML looks like this: But if we access the folio using the new service - http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=FOLIO_CRAWL&dDocName=ecm008003&IsPageDebug=1 - this is what the result set looks like (using the IsPageDebug parameter). Given this as the result set, it makes it very easy to consume and repurpose that folio. You can download a copy of the sample component here.
