  • Why using the word "mechanism" in CS?

    I'm not sure about the usage of the word "mechanism" when in fact most of the time what is meant is an algorithm. For instance there's talk about Java's "thread-scheduling mechanism" - why not call it an algorithm and why borrow a term from mechanics where relations sometimes are the opposites than of computer science? I'm aware that an algorithm is considered a "mechanical solution" but is this really the case in fact when a lot of algorithm don't have mechanical representations for instance a file-sharing network that gets quicker and faster as the usage grows, that would be the reverse of a mechanical structure that would go slower when usage grows.

  • How do I word my url so that it doesn't get blocked or appear spammy

    I'm creating a fairly large site. Will my links appear spammy if I use the same word as in the pathfile in the url? For example: www.example.com/apples/great-apple-recipes www.example.com/apples/fresh-apple-pie www.example.com/apples/delicious-apple-turnovers I do not want my link to appear spammy. But is it ok if the keyword is almost always the same as in the pathfile on a huge site? Does the pathfile count as part of the keyword? Also, how many words in total should a url (including pathfile etc...) be?

  • First blog post from Surface RT using Microsoft Word 2013

    One of the concerns I had in using a Surface RT was the need I have to be able to post.Recently, and not so recently, I have stopped posting. Between getting busy, carrying different devices. Well, it has been hard to do. Tried doing that with an iPad, and I can't say it didn't work, it just didn't work for me. Again, back to the concern with the Surface RT. But, looking at the App Store I started getting that same frustration I had with other platforms that left me with a feeling of "I have to compromise because I am on a SubText platform". So, I stuck to posting from Windows Live Writer (great tool!). This whole situation made me think and rethink my strategy, and then … a big DUH! What about using Microsoft Word 2013 for that? Would it work? So, here is the test!

    I have a VB system that utilises VBA and MSWord 20078. I have a few problems that I am hoping you solve for me. I need to search for a string in a Word 2007 document and then pickup all characters into a VB Variable from that string to the next carriage return inclusive. I will then manipulate the contents of the VB variable. When I find the search string I need to know what section of the document I am in. Once I have these two pieces of information I then need to continue to the next occurrence of the search string and repeat my functionality. Once I have dealt with the last occurrence of the search string I need to know that so that I can exit the process. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

  • Printer Redirection from 2003 Terminal Server to 2008 Terminal Server

    Our environment is a terminal server cluster (Win2003 servers) that everyone connects to do do their work. I have set up a new Win2008 R2 machine with the intention of using it to publish our main application to the TS farm. The idea was to keep this server dedicated to one application to avoid driver/dll conflicts with other software. I created a RemoteApp on the new server and made an .rdp file and placed it on the desktop of our TS farm servers. The problem I am running into is that when I connect to the RemoteApp, it doesn't show the printers that are installed on the TS server I am connecting from. We have over 20 printers installed on our TS servers, each with different drivers and permissions. I really do not want to reinstall all of these on the RemoteApp server so I was hoping Printer Redirection would handle this. It would appear that because the RDP client for Server 2003 x64 is 6.0, that version doesn't support the Easy Print feature (requires 6.1). I can't find any newer version on the MS site to download for Win2003 x64. How can I get the printers on the TS farm machine to redirect so they are viewed by the RemoteApp machine?

    Just a small question regarding joins. I have a table with around 30 fields and i was thinking about making a second table to store 10 of those fields. Then i would just join them in with the main data. The 10 fields that i was planning to store in a second table does not get queried directly, it's just some settings for the data in the first table. Something like: Table 1 Id Data1 Data2 Data3 etc ... Table 2 Id (same id as table one) Settings1 Settings2 Settings3 Is this a bad solution? Should i just use 1 table? How much performance inpact does it have? All entries in table 1 would also then have an entry in table 2. Small update is in order. Most of the Data fields are of the type varchar and 2 of them are of the type text. How is indexing treated? My plan is to index 2 data fields, email (varchar 50) and author (varchar 20). And yes, all records in Table 1 will have a record in Table 2. Most of the settings fields are of the bit type, around 80%. The rest is a mix between int and varchar. The varchars can be null.

    Hello, I have created a custom data grid control. I dragged it on windows form and set its properties like column and all & ran the project. It built successfully and I am able to view the grid control on the form. Now if i try to view that form in designer, I am getting following error..     howdy using vs2008 C# Does anyone know how change the directory location that auto recover files are saved to in visual studio sp1. The specific directory it should be on my C# drive in my documents is always empty even when the feature is turned on. There where some changes to our network env and it seems my auto recover files are now being mapped to network drive and i need to change it back. I cant find anything on how to do this on net searches if anyone can help please. thanks for any help

So I'm currently working on an ePub reader application, and I've been reading through a bunch of regular XML files just fine with System.Xml and XmlDocument: XmlDocument xmldoc = new XmlDocument(); xmldoc.Load(Path.Combine(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory(), "META-INF/container.xml")); XmlNodeList xnl = xmldoc.GetElementsByTagName("rootfile"); However, now I'm trying to open the XHTML files that contain the actual book text, and they're XHTML files. Now I don't really know the difference between the two, but I'm getting the following error with this code (in the same document, using the same XmlDocument and XmlNodeList variable) xmldoc.Load(Path.Combine(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory(), "OEBPS/part1.xhtml")); "WebException was unhandled: The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable" It's a local document, so I'm not understanding why it's giving this error?     I am trying to figure out how Visual Studio 2005 and the Windows SDK 6.1 integrate in a command line build environment (if at all). I am mostly interested in x64 development, but also just in how these two packages fit together. Is it possible/advisable to use the compiler and linker from Visual Studio 2005 and the headers/libraries from the newer Windows SDK 6.1? Also, is it possible to use the devenv command (part of VS2005) in the Windows SDK 6.1 build environment?

    I'm developing a Visual Studio Integration Package. When I try to run the Unit Tests that are included in the unit test project that is included in the template I get the following failure on the first test: The test adapter 'VsIdeHostAdapter' threw an exception while running test 'MenuItemCallback'. Call was rejected by callee. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010001 (RPC_E_CALL_REJECTED)) It's intermittent- a new instance of Visual Studio always spins up, then sometimes it works but usually fails.

Also Visual studio 2010 ultimate. I did not upgrade the target .net framework to 4.0 because my host will not support this for ~24 hours. I have a .Tests project in the same solution that says it is targeting .net 4.0 but it still won't build even with that unloaded, same message.
