• How to ask developers to think about high resolution screens

  I just got a ASUS N56VZ laptop, and it`s all good, but the screen resolution 1920x1080px. I am not asking, how to scale ui elements. If someone is interested I have found some tricks: increase font size in system settings increase unity dock size in MyUnity or system settings in modern Ubuntu versions. tweak userChrome.js of FireFox to make buttons|panels|icons larger add DefaultZoomLevel extension to FireFox to make it zoom pages initially. But all of it is miserable, because there are some big bugs: window decoration elements are way too small to pick them with mouse. I can't scale window easily and I can't position my cursor fast on the close|maximize buttons. Tuning lines like in sound volume dialog are hardly clickable at all. Unity top panel (status panel & tray) hardly can contain the bigger font, so it looks ugly, but icons are still the same. Sometimes I can`t read text, as it is cropped (and I cant scale some dialogs as it has fixed size) Chromium is not usable at all (ok, it's not Ubuntu problem, but the problem still exists) JAVA applications are not scalable (same as above) In FF I am able to get descent results in most cases, but multiplication of system font increase and browser font increase makes system controls (combobox, lists, drop down lists) extremely big, so I cant even control the zoom level on the page. IMHO, we should post a bug report (but what kind of bug?) and vote for it! The problem is even deeper, but at least we should ask developers to think about it. So my question is: how can I post a report (the right words and right place) and how can we (who already has that problem, or who want it to be solved before hardware upgrade) vote for faster solution. Any ideas?

• Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

  The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files. • WINAPI beginner guidance question

  I'm learning to develop windows applications using WINAPI and plain C. Now I got a bit confused with all those handles and would like to ask if you guys could teach me some good practices to structure and handle controls and windows. Here's where I get confused: Using the IDs declared in the resources for each object, we can get their handles using GetDlgItem(). Now what if we don't know their parent, which is needed by this function. One example: We have the main window created at launch. Then we register two new window classes and create a window for each new class and we create a message function for each too. Now if inside one of the children windows I create a button and inside the other child window I create a text label. Now when we click the button inside of child window A the label in child window B shall be modified to whatever. The WM_COMMAND for the button is interpreted inside the message loop for child window A. Now what would be the best and more elegant way to access the text label inside the child window B? I am in the process of learning the WINAPI and just want to learn it right from the start instead of producing Hacked code that someday becomes unreadable and to later have to adapt to a new way of programing.

The code below is the movement function of my Dot class, which controls the ball. The ball seems to ignore yvel and moves with xvel to the bottom right. • Software solution from the 2000's, should I attempt to patch or remake the whole thing?

  I was sent out to discuss a system that a certain company is currently using and what should be done with it. The company manufactures various carton displays. This system was developed to keep track of clients, orders and prices. Lots have happened since the system was created and the system is now, as the manager described it, "locked up" and "problematic", which I translate as "not dynamic" and "unstable". Some info about the system It was developed around the year 2000 Fairly small system, 2-5 users, 6 forms, ~8 tables with average quantities of data Built on early Visual Basic, forms created with the drag and drop design. Interface is basically just a window with a menu and some forms Uses MSSQL database (SQL2005 server) to store data and ODBC driver to query, data was migrated from excel before this system, and before excel it was handled, calculated and written by hand and paper Users work in Microsoft XP environment (and up) Their main problem is that they can't adjust and calculate prices, can't add new carton types etc, correctly anymore because they can't (or rather, they don't know how to) touch the data on the server. I suggested 3 possible solutions Attempt to patch the current system Create a fresh new interface (preferably similar environment, VB.net or VB based) Bring it back to an Excel solution, considering it is such a small system There might be more options, but these are the ones I could think of. My questions are What should I recommend and why? What is or could be the pros and cons of these alternatives? Are there other (possibly better) alternatives?

• Using texture() in combination with JBox2D

  I'm getting some trouble using the texture() method inside beginShape()/endShape() clause. In the display()-method of my class TowerElement (a bar which is DYNAMIC), I draw the object like following: void display(){ Vec2 pos = level.getLevel().getBodyPixelCoord(body); float a = body.getAngle(); // needed for rotation pushMatrix(); translate(pos.x, pos.y); rotate(-a); fill(temp); // temp is a color defined in the constructor stroke(0); beginShape(); vertex(-w/2,-h/2); vertex(w/2,-h/2); vertex(w/2,h-h/2); vertex(-w/2,h-h/2); endShape(CLOSE); popMatrix(); } Now, according to the API, I can use the texture() method inside the shape definition. Now when I remove the fill(temp) and put texture(img) (img is a PImage defined in the constructor), the stroke gets drawn, but the bar isn't filled and I get the warning texture() is not available with this renderer What can I do in order to use textures anyway? I don't even understand the error message, since I do not know much about different renderers.

• Why don't my Fn keys work for brightness or media after upgrading?

  I recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. After the upgrade, I can no longer adjust the screen brightness or the volume using keyboard (before the upgrade, using Fn+F4, Fn+F11, etc. worked). Using Fn+F2 to disable wireless still works, so I guess the Fn key itself is being recognised. I tried to follow the instructions here, but I don't have a file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf. I also tried following this workaround, but it had no noticeable effect. I've also tried going to Settings ? Keyboard ? Shortcuts and reassigning the brightness and volume controls, both to the default keys and to new combinations. These changes don't have an effect even after rebooting. Googling has found bug reports where pressing the media keys brings up a "no entry sign" rather than changing the volume. When I press the keys there's no response at all. I've also seen various people say a workaround is to have totem running in the background; this doesn't work for me either. Finally, I tried installing keytouch; I was able to install keytouch-editor but got the message "Unable to locate package keytouch". Any more ideas? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me (even by pointing to a thread I've missed)!

• HP dv7 Beats Audio Subwoofer on while headphones plugged in

  I have looked for answers to this but have not found anything. People have similar problems but mostly with getting the subwoofer to work at all. I got the subwoofer to work by editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file and adding options snd-hda-intel model=ref. When I plug in my headphones, the main speakers turn off but the subwoofer still has sound coming through it. The output is selected automatically in sound preferences and is set to headphones when they are plugged in. I also have tried muting the main speakers, which in turn mutes the subwoofer, before plugging in the headphones as they seem to have two different volume controls, but as soon as the headphones are plugged in, the subwoofer has sound coming out of it. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit on HP dv7- 4285dx. I am able to just not have the subwoofer on but since I have gotten it to work I would like to keep it around and not have to change a config file every time I want to plug in my headphones. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• How to optimize a box2d simulation in action game?

  I'm working on an action game and i use box2d for physics. The game use a tiled map. I have different types of body: Static ones used for tiles Dynamic ones for player and enemies Actually i tested my game with ~150 bodies and i have a 60fps constantly on my computer but not on my mobile (android). The FPS drop as the number of body increase. After having profiled the android application, i saw that the World.step took around 8ms in CPU time to execute. Here are few things to note: Not all the world is visible on screen, i use a scrolling system Enemies are constantly moving toward the player so there is alaways to force applied to their body Enemies need to collide between each others Enemies collide with tiles I also now that i can active/desactive or sleep/awake bodies. Considering the fact that only a part of the enemies are possibly displayed on screen, is there any optimizations i can do to reduce the execution time of box2d simulation? I found a guy trying an optimization based on distance of enemies from the player (link). But i seems like he just desactives far bodies (in my case, i could desactive bodies that are not visible). But my enemies need to move even when they are not visible on screen, and applying forces will not workd on inactive bodies. Should i play with sleeping bodies here? Also, enemies are composed by two fixtures and are constantly colliding with each others and with tiles but i really never need to get notified about that. Is there anything i can do to optimize this kind of scenario? Finally, am i wrong to try to run simulation at 60FPS on mobile and should i try to make it run at 30FPS?

  5 sites I commonly vist at home: Google.com Gmail.com Linkedin.com Capella.edu Codeplex.com All of the top 5 sites I visit at home use JavaScript and is applied in various ways for various reasons. Gmail and Google make use of Ajax to retrieve information without the user having to call another page. In addition, all 5 of the websites use JavaScript to enhance a user's experience. Examples of this can be found in content rotation on Capella's main site and the displaying and hiding of specific content sections from within our course room. Codeplex uses Ajax and JavaScript to show dynamic content on its homepage and allow users to page through the data. I think there use of JavaScript is well placed and enhances the viewing experience of the user because it reduces the amount of interaction a user has to perform for them to obtain information they are looking to see. I have used JavaScript in various ways. One of the most memorable ways was to enable an HTML table to be able to have its rows paged and sorted based on the values in each table row.

• Wallpapers of only some users being dynamically loaded in LightDM

  As this answer explains: Ubuntu 12.04 Unity greeter has introduced selected user dynamic background, that means that when selecting a user from the available users list the background will change to reflect the selected user's desktop background. However, I am puzzled, because in my experience this isn't consistently true. On one of my family members' computers, where there are three users, only one of the users' background shows in LightDM. None of the users are newly created. The user whose background is showing has a custom background; one of the users whose background doesn't show also does; and the other one who doesn't has the default switching wallpaper set. It is not a clean install but has been incrementally upgraded from about 8.04. Any idea what could be happening? This is a similar question, though we're also having the opposite problem (default wallpapers not showing). (I do not have access to the computer mentioend above at the moment; when I do I will use some of the criteria given there to analyze the problem further.)

When you hit the Start menu, you get the live-tiles displayed overlaying the desktop. But you can also swipe from the bottom to get the “all-applications” view. This, in essense, is really what those that like the Start Menu want. I believe it was mentioned that you can configure the all-applications view to be the default. They’re Committed to Improving Windows 8 The commitment to rapid deployments Ballmer talked about is crucial to Windows 8’s success. They need to keep it evolving quickly to maintain the interest of users and developers. I think the little improvements they showed are excellent (hands-free mode, multi window docking, better multi-monitor support, new developer controls, etc.). Hardware Vendors are Committed to Windows 8 They showed off a number of new hardware products (Windows 8 and Windows Phone). The Surface’s introduction to the market has done nothing to dissuade their hardware partners. Bing as a Platform is Huge for Developers!!! This was the biggest take-away from the keynote! What the team is doing with Bing not as a search engine but as a developer API is very impressive! I’m going to be diving into this over the rest of Build so watch more blog posts coming on it. Azure, Office 365, and other topics will be covered at tomorrow’s keynote. So far, great kick off to Build. Now on to sessions! D

• String on a model

  I am trying to put a sting on a Model and I want it to be dynamic. Did some research and came up with drawing the text on the texture and then set it on the model. • Task-It Source Code

  Download Source Code I've received many questions about when the source code for the Task-It application will be released. Well, the time has finally come. I haven't been able to release this sooner due to the flurry of releases that have been coming out lately. Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services, and even our Q1 Rad Controls. Each time I got the latest bits I ran into issues (either bugs or visual issues) in the Task-It that needed to be fixed. Having said that, the app is far from perfect. There are still some bugs lurking and things that need to be fixed up visually (especially the RadGridView filtering popup), but the main purpose of this app is to show the RadControls for Silverlight 4 in the context of a real-world application, and I don't want to keep delaying the release of the source code. Minimum requirements To run the app you will need the latest Silverlight bits. • Book / software to learn ERP?

  For a while I've been wanting to learn ERP. What I would like to do is set up a system, and then practice running a business doing things like generating invoices, raising purchase orders, producing monthly accounts, keeping track of fixed assets etc. Then look at enhancing the system further by adding custom code. I know there are a variety of open source ERP systems around, but really I would prefer a widely used commercial system as having familiarity with such a system would be more marketable. So are there any such systems that have a free developer version available? I've looked around, but I've had trouble finding such a system. Also I would like to find a good book or more likely books to read on ERP. Ideally I would be able to get an indepth explanation ERP from a business perspective, ie the accounting operations it supports, how to do all the regular accounting tasks, configuration, business operations best practices, accounting controls and so on. In addition I would like an IT perspective, ie setting up the system, developing forms and reports. Unfortunately the few books I've looked at have been really superficial and totally inadequate. They either fall into the beginning programmer camp, where they use the programming tools but concentrate on programming 101 topics like loops, flow control etc. Or they cover setting up the system with lots of screen shots, but little substance as to why things should be done a certain way. I have a programming background but no real experience in implementing ERP systems. Also I have a reasonable accounting knowledge, and have used ERP systems in various jobs, but only to a very limited degree. So are there any ERP experts who can point me in the right direction? • Certain grid lines not rendering as expected

  I am drawing a simple quad (a triangle strip with 4 vertices) as the floor and then drawing an 8x8 grid over top (a collection of vertex pairs for a line list). The vertical grid lines work fine (apart from being very aliased), but some of the horizontal lines do not get rendered. The grid renders fine if I do not draw the quad. foreach (EffectPass pass in _Effect.CurrentTechnique.Passes) { pass.Apply(); CurrentGraphicsDevice.SetVertexBuffer(_VertexFloorBuffer); _Engine.CurrentGraphicsDevice.DrawPrimitives(PrimitiveType.TriangleStrip, 0, 2); //Some of the horizontal lines seems to disappear if we draw the above quad. CurrentGraphicsDevice.SetVertexBuffer(_VertexGridBuffer); CurrentGraphicsDevice.DrawPrimitives(PrimitiveType.LineList, 0, _VertexGridBuffer.VertexCount / 2); } What could be causing these lines to not be rendered? Update: I added the below code after I draw my quad and grid and it started working. • Linux, GNU GCC, ld, version scripts and the ELF binary format -- How does it work? [closed]

  I'm trying to learn more about library versioning in Linux and how to put it all to work. Here's the context: I have two versions of a dynamic library which expose the same set of interfaces, say libsome1.so and libsome2.so. An application is linked against libsome1.so. This application uses libdl.so to dynamically load another module, say libmagic.so. Now libmagic.so is linked against libsome2.so. Obviously, without using linker scripts to hide symbols in libmagic.so, at run-time all calls to interfaces in libsome2.so are resolved to libsome1.so. This can be confirmed by checking the value returned by libVersion() against the value of the macro LIB_VERSION. So I try next to compile and link libmagic.so with a linker script which hides all symbols except 3 which are defined in libmagic.so and are exported by it. This works... Or at least libVersion() and LIB_VERSION values match (and it reports version 2 not 1). However, when some data structures are serialized to disk, I noticed some corruption. In the application's directory if I delete libsome1.so and create a soft link in its place to point to libsome2.so, everything works as expected and the same corruption does not happen. I can't help but think that this may be caused due to some conflict in the run-time linker's resolution of symbols. I've tried many things, like trying to link libsome2.so so that all symbols are alised to symbol@@VER_2 (which I am still confused about because the command nm -CD libsome2.so still lists symbols as symbol and not symbol@@VER_2), but nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong?

  An example on the asp.net site has an example of using Linq to create a search feature on a Music album site using MVC. In practice this pattern doesn't seem to scale well because as the search criteria expands I keep adding more and more conditions which looks and feels unpleasant/repetitive. How can I refactor this pattern? One idea I have is to create a column in every table that is "searchable" which could be a computed column that concatenates all the data from the different columns (SQL Server 2008). So instead of having movie genre and title it would be something like. if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(searchString)) { movies = movies.Where(s => s.SearchColumn.Contains(searchString)); } What are the performance/design/architecture implications of doing this? I have also tried using procedures that use dynamic queries but then I have just moved the ugliness to the database. E.g. • What exactly are Link Relation Values?

Link relation values help consumers understand why they might want to activate a hypermedia control. They do so by indicating the role of the linked resource in the context of the current representation. I interpret the above quotes as saying that Hypermedia control contains both a link to a resource and an annotation describing the role of linked resource in the context of the current representation. And we call this annotation ( which describes the role of linked resource ) a link relation value. Is my assumption correct or does the term link relation value actually describe something different? • Efficient algorithm for Virtual Machine(VM) Consolidation in Cloud

  PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much. • ADF Hands on Training &ndash; Prerequisites for 22nd March 2011

  For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites.  Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed.  So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post.  So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises.  No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g.  The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked).  Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev  and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables.  If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.

• Why choose an established CMS as opposed to building one from scratch?

  A lot of my research over the next few weeks will be into different CMS's. I've already had a brief look at episerver and umbraco. While reading into these systems I can't help but think that providing content management features are achievable without learning the details and structure of many of these (rather large) CMS platforms. I have, in the past, been given projects whereby my role as a developer must be kept separate to that of an editor (makes sense). i.e. It was my task to develop the design and functionality of the site and my clients' job to update the content. I've achieved this by also implementing a sort of 'portal' on which there were a couple of pages that would accept text input and picture uploads etc. (basically, whatever content they wanted), record this new content to the database and then by design the code-behind would read all this from the database into relevant controls (repeaters for example). For me, this has been an effective enough way of my clients managing the content to deploy with my solutions. I know that I am wrong - and that CMS's are preferable to those that are built from the ground up - but other than the matter of cost, why?
