• MySQL Connector/Net 6.5.5 Maintenance Release has been released

  MySQL Connector/Net 6.5.5, a new maintenance release of our 6.5 series, has been released.  This release is GA quality and is appropriate for use in production environments.  Please note that 6.6 is our latest driver series and is the recommended product for development. • error when installing mysql ruby gem on OSX 10.6.3

  So I am getting the same issue as mentioned here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1366746/gem-install-mysql-failure-in-snow-leopard But I haven't been able to get it fixed using the answers on this link. Here's a brief history - I had MAMP on my machine, but now I downloaded the latest MySQL from mysql.com and installed version 5.1.46 this new version runs fine and client "mysql" is able to connect and I also have XCode v3.2.1, since someone mentioned that it can cause issues. Here's the error - **Building native extensions. This could take a while... • InvalidCastException when creating an instance using assembly.CreateInstance

  I'm looking for an explanation for the following - I have an assembly I'm loading using Assembly assembly = Assembly.LoadFrom(filename); I then loop on all the types in the assembly, and wish to try and find out if a type implements a particular interface and if so I want an instance of that type, I've tried several things which did not work, but when I fell back to the most basic (and probably inefficient) way, I realised there's something more fundamental I don't understand - foreach (Type t in assembly.GetTypes()) { foreach (Type i in t.GetInterfaces()) { if (i.FullName == pluginInterfaceType.FullName) { object o = assembly.CreateInstance(t.ToString()); IInterface plugin = (IInterface)o; That last line causes an InvalidCastException, despite the fact that the type created definitely implements that interface. Further more - if I use Activator.CreateInstance instead of Assembly.CreateInstance (which I don't want to do), casting to the interface works just fine.

• How to use pthread_atfork() and pthread_once() to reinitialize mutexes in child processes

  We have a C++ shared library that uses ZeroC's Ice library for RPC and unless we shut down Ice's runtime, we've observed child processes hanging on random mutexes. The Ice runtime starts threads, has many internal mutexes and keeps open file descriptors to servers. Additionally, we have a few of mutexes of our own to protect our internal state. Our shared library is used by hundreds of internal applications so we don't have control over when the process calls fork(), so we need a way to safely shutdown Ice and lock our mutexes while the process forks. Reading the POSIX standard on pthread_atfork() on handling mutexes and internal state: Alternatively, some libraries might have been able to supply just a child routine that reinitializes the mutexes in the library and all associated states to some known value (for example, what it was when the image was originally executed). This approach is not possible, though, because implementations are allowed to fail *_init() and *_destroy() calls for mutexes and locks if the mutex or lock is still locked. In this case, the child routine is not able to reinitialize the mutexes and locks. On Linux, the this test C program returns EPERM from pthread_mutex_unlock() in the child pthread_atfork() handler. Linux requires adding _NP to the PTHREAD_MUTEX_ERRORCHECK macro for it to compile. This program is linked from this good thread. Given that it's technically not safe or legal to unlock or destroy a mutex in the child, I'm thinking it's better to have pointers to mutexes and then have the child make new pthread_mutex_t on the heap and leave the parent's mutexes alone, thereby having a small memory leak. The only issue is how to reinitialize the state of the library and I'm thinking of reseting a pthread_once_t. A new pthread_mutex_t is only created when the library function is invoked in the child process. This is hacky but maybe the best way of dealing with this skirting the standards. If the pthread_once_t contains a mutex then the system must have a way of initializing it from its PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT state. If it contains a pointer to a mutex allocated on the heap than it'll be forced to allocate a new one and set the address in the pthread_once_t. I'm hoping it doesn't use the address of the pthread_once_t for anything special which would defeat this. Searching comp.programming.threads group for pthread_atfork() shows a lot of good discussion and how little the POSIX standards really provides to solve this problem. There's also the issue that one should only call async-signal-safe functions from pthread_atfork() handlers, and it appears the most important one is the child handler, where only a memcpy() is done. Does this work? Is there a better way of dealing with the requirements of our shared library?

  The ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks comes with several reports you may request from QuickBooks by default. However, there are many more that are not readily available. The ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks makes it easy for you to create new reports and customize existing ones. In this article, we will illustrate how to create your own report and retrieve it from the Server Explorer in Visual Studio. For this example we will show how to create an Item Profitability Report. Creating the report script file Step 1: Download the sample reports available here. Extract them to a folder of your choice. Step 2: Make a copy of the ReportGeneralSummary.rsd file and rename it to ItemProfitability.rsd. Then open the file in any text editor. Step 3: Open the installation directory of the ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks. Under the \db\ folder, locate the ReportJob.rsb file. Open this file in another text editor. Note: Although we are using ReportJob.rsb for this example, other reports may be contained in other Report*.rsb files. We recommend consulting the included help file and first locating the Report stored procedure and ReportType you are looking for. Otherwise, you may open each Report*.rsb file and look under the "reporttype" input for the report you are attempting to create. Step 4: First, let's rename the title of ItemProfitability.rsd. Near the top of the file you will see a title and description. Change the title to match the name of the file. Change the description to anything you like. My concern is that if I log the exception in the library, there will be many duplicates (because the library layer will log it, the application layer will log it, and anything in between), but if I don't log it in the library, it'll be hard to track down bugs.   I know I've had this problem before so I'm really frustrated. • Creating an SMF service for mercurial web server

  I'm working on a project at the moment, which has a number of contributers. We're managing the project gate (which is stand alone) with mercurial. We want to have an easy way of seeing the changelog, so we can show management what is going on.  Luckily mercurial provides a basic web server which allows you to see the changes, and drill in to change sets. This can be run as a daemon, but as it was running on our build server, every time it was rebooted, someone needed to remember to start the process again. This is of course a classic usage of SMF. Now I'm not an experienced person at writing SMF services, so it took me 1/2 an hour or so to figure it out the first time. But going forward I should know what I'm doing a bit better. I did reference this doc extensively. Taking a step back, the command to start the mercurial web server is $ hg serve -p <port number> -d So we somehow need to get SMF to run that command for us. In the simplest form, SMF services are really made up of two components. The manifest Usually lives in /var/svc/manifest somewhere Can be imported from any location The method Usually live in /lib/svc/method I simply put the script straight in that directory. Not very repeatable, but it worked Can take an argument of start, stop, or refresh Lets start with the manifest. This looks pretty complex, but all it's doing is describing the service name, the dependencies, the start and stop methods, and some properties. The properties can be by instance, that is to say I could have multiple hg serve processes handling different mercurial projects, on different ports simultaneously Here is the manifest I wrote. I stole extensively from the examples in the Documentation. We don't need to implement a stop case, as the manifest says to use "exec=':kill'for the stop method. Now all we need to do is import the manifest and start the service, but first verify the manifest # svccfg verify /path/to/hg-serve.xml If that doesn't give an error try importing it # svccfg import /path/to/hg-serve.xml If like me you originally put the hg-serve.xml file in /var/svc/manifest somewhere you'll get an error and told to restart the import service svccfg: Restarting svc:/system/manifest-import The manifest being imported is from a standard location and should be imported with the command : svcadm restart svc:/system/manifest-import # svcadm restart svc:/system/manifest-import and you're nearly done. • dlopen() with dependencies between libraries

  My program uses plugins, that are loaded dynamically with dlopen(). The locations of these plugins can be arbitrary, so they aren't necessarily in the library path. In some cases, one plugin needs to depend on another plugin. So if A and B are dynamic libraries, I'll first load A, then load B which uses symbols defined in A. My reading of the dlopen() documentation implies that if I specify RTLD_GLOBAL this should all work. But it doesn't. When I call dlopen() on the second library, it fails with an error saying it couldn't find the first one (which had already been loaded with dlopen()): Error loading library /usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib: dlopen(/usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib, 9): Library not loaded: libOpenMMOpenCL.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib Reason: image not found How can I make this work?

• Yet another blog about IValueConverter

  After my previous blog on a Generic Boolean Value Converter I thought I might as well blog up another IValueConverter implementation that I use. The Generic Boolean Value Converter effectively converters an input which only has two possible values to one of two corresponding objects.  The next logical step would be to create a similar converter that can take an input which has multiple (but finite and discrete) values to one of multiple corresponding objects.  To put it more simply a Generic Enum Value Converter. Now we already have a tool that can help us in this area, the ResourceDictionary.  A simple IValueConverter implementation around it would create a StringToObjectConverter like so:- StringToObjectConverter using System; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Data; using System.Linq; using System.Windows.Markup; namespace SilverlightApplication1 {     [ContentProperty("Items")]     public class StringToObjectConverter : IValueConverter     {         public ResourceDictionary Items { get; set; }         public string DefaultKey { get; set; }                  public StringToObjectConverter()         {             DefaultKey = "__default__";         }         public virtual object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture)         {             if (value != null && Items.Contains(value.ToString()))                 return Items[value.ToString()];             else                 return Items[DefaultKey];         }         public virtual object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture)         {             return Items.FirstOrDefault(kvp => value.Equals(kvp.Value)).Key;         }     } } There are some things to note here.  The bulk of managing the relationship between an object instance and the related string key is handled by the Items property being an ResourceDictionary.  Also there is a catch all “__default__” key value which allows for only a subset of the possible input values to mapped to an object with the rest falling through to the default. I can’t imagine right now a scenario where this converter would be used in a TwoWay binding but there is no reason why it can’t.  I prefer to avoid leaving the ConvertBack throwing an exception if that can be be avoided.  Hence it just enumerates the KeyValuePair entries to find a value that matches and returns the key its mapped to. Ah but now my sense of balance is assaulted again.  Whilst StringToObjectConverter is quite happy to accept an enum type via the Convert method it returns a string from the ConvertBack method not the original input enum type that arrived in the Convert.  Now I could address this by complicating the ConvertBack method and examining the targetType parameter etc.  However I prefer to a different approach, deriving a new EnumToObjectConverter class instead. The observant might note that there is actually no “Generic” aspect to this solution in the end.  The use of a ResourceDictionary eliminates the need for that.

  The plyr package contains a set of tools for partitioning a problem into smaller sub-problems that can be more easily processed. One function within {plyr} is ddply, which allows you to specify subsets of a data.frame and then apply a function to each subset. The result is gathered into a single data.frame. Such a capability is very convenient. The function ddply also has a parallel option that if TRUE, will apply the function in parallel, using the backend provided by foreach. This type of functionality is available through Oracle R Enterprise using the ore.groupApply function. In this blog post, we show a few examples from Sean Anderson's "A quick introduction to plyr" to illustrate the correpsonding functionality using ore.groupApply. The function ore.push creates a temporary table in the database, returning a proxy object, the ore.frame. With ore.groupApply, we augment the function to return the specific data.frame we want. We also specify the argument FUN.VALUE, which describes the resulting data.frame. From our previous blog posts, you may recall that by default, ore.groupApply returns an ore.list containing the results of each function invocation. To get a data.frame, we specify the structure of the result. The results in both cases are the same, however the ore.groupApply result is an ore.frame. In this case the data stays in the database until it's actually required. This can result in significant memory and time savings whe data is large. The next ddply example uses the summarise function, which creates a new data.frame. In ore.groupApply, the year column is passed in with the data. Realizing this with ore.groupApply involves creating an index column out of the concatenation of the columns used for partitioning. We then use ggplot to produce the graph. We can take this same code, push the data.frame df to the database and invoke this on the database server. The result of ore.groupApply is an ore.list that contains the three graphs.
