• Why is ntpd not updating the time on my server?

  I have ntpd running on my server. It's all the default settings, except I commented out its ability to be a server to other machines: # restrict -4 default kod notrap nomodify nopeer noquery # restrict -6 default kod notrap nomodify nopeer noquery restrict default ignore If I run ntpdate -q ntp.ubuntu.com, I'm told that my machine's clock is off by 7 seconds. What's going on?   Is there a way that I can use my Linux ext4 file system, as such and then use it on some other computer. I have a dual-boot of Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 and my partition table looks like this: My question might not be clear, so explaining it with an example. Can I copy my Linux partition on a flash drive and then use it on a different PC, with or without any need to install Ubuntu on new PC, by simply booting from the copied ext4 partition. This way, I can easily port my Ubuntu packages and other applications, settings etc. from one PC to other. If it's a very stupid question, please don't mind.

• Grub2 menu after VMware guest customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

  I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. But it can't see all the hardware of the laptop. I would like some help. my laptop has 8G (in Windows7), but Ubuntu only see 2.9G (I get this value from System Monitor under Resource tab my laptop can have 1600x900 resolution (it works in Windows7), but i can only set to 1280x800 in Ubunutu my wireless card does not work. But my wired connection works. Can you please help me in configuring my Ubuntu environment?

• Keyboard causing freezes

  My problem started on Windows XP: a computer (that was working fine for many years) had a problem, that I can't quite remember (may have been to do with the startup process) - but I solved it by swapping the keyboard with one on another machine. Now for several years the problematic keyboard has been working fine - on my main machine that runs Ubuntu. I also dual boot Windows XP - and have had no problems on either OS. However I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty (pre-alpha) and found that any keyboard press causes freezes. (All still works fine on Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 and Windows XP) Just wondering why I might be experiencing this? Seems strange to me that's its not consistent.

• Migrating Ruby on Rails Website to New Server (Linux)

  I have an existing website that is a Ruby on Rails project. I have another server i need to transfer the existing website too. The server i wish to transfer too was originally hosting the website so has the necessary gems/configuration are installed. I have tar the current releases shared dir from the old server and transfered them over to the new server. I have then unpack the tar in the apps directory to the new location which is a different URL path. My problem is now as you can see below that the path on the current - is pointing to the old url. • I need to access another user's files.

  My system is an HP netbook running Ubuntu 10 netbook edition from a USB drive. I created an admin account and user account, and left in place the 'ubuntu' account. My netbook came with Windows 7 factory loaded and I did some work in Windows before setting up Linux. I copied my work into the HP Tools FAT32 partition that also came Factory Loaded, and was only 20% full. Only the 'ubuntu' account shows the HP Tools partition. So I would like to either view the partition from the 'admin' or 'user' accounts, or copy files from the partition-to a folder accessible from admin or user. I have already tried right clicking the folder, selecting share, and installing the share package, but I got a string of errors and would prefer a short term, one time solution that does not involve installing the share package. All I need is a few plain text Windows files i was working on.

• Serial converter - cat /dev/ttyUSB0 hangs on open

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and attached a Garmin data cable. ") which is okay, as there is currently no data comming in at this port. I am not sure if it is just a different configuration of the system or an driver related problem. How can I track this down further? Unfortunately I can not update the old Ubuntu 11.04 system for different reasons at the moment.

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much).   Since having issues installing Ubuntu side-by-side with Windows 8, I thought I'd try running Ubuntu in a VM instead. However, VMWare player has no love for Windows 8 yet (invalid VM86 or something similar), and AFAIK the promised hypervisor options are not currently available for playing with. So: Are there any VM hosts that do work in Windows 8 Developer Preview at this point? (specifically for running Ubuntu) Alternatively, does Wubi work on Windows 8? • How can I run 2 already installed OS at the same time?

  I have Win7 and Ubuntu installed on my PC, and I can choose which to run at boot time. I would like to be able to run the Ubuntu from within the Win7. Tools like VMWare allows one to create a new installation of a guest OS, which could then be run alongside the hosting OS. However, I already have the Ubuntu fully installed on my hard drive, and I'd like to maintain the dual boot option. Ideally, I'd like to be able to create a new virtual machine on my Win7, but instead of installing a new guest OS, just direct it to the existing installation. Is that possible?

• Thunderbird segmentation fault problem

  Hey all, my thunderbird crashes few seconds after it boots up regardless of in safe mode or normal, here is a strace log: http://pastebin.com/tccfYwcD I've searched google, ubuntu forums, and mozilla bug tracker about this problem, but any of found answers did not helped me :/ I've tried: nscd daemon install solutions posted earlier fresh clean instal of ubuntu 10.10 (32b) and thunderbird 3.1.7 from repos on a VM - problem still exists removed all thunderbrid related dot files and dot dirs, and setup profile from beginning Remove thunderbird and related stuff with apt purge, and install tb from official .deb package None of these steps helps me, tb still crashes with segmentation fault :/ I use gmail IMAP account, I've searched and found few other tips on google, but with no success. I've even tried to remove mails from web gui, that came after first notice of problem, still no luck. I'm not using any network fs, and not sharing this account with anyone, and I do not use filesystem or home encryption either just clean install :/ If You guys need some more info for this let me know. • Rsync and Windows 7

  Can someone give me any tips on setting up some sort of Rsync server/client on Windows 7 to run rsync between both my web hosting server, and a backup server that I have running Ubuntu? I've tried setting it up with this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvwdkZLNtnA Using copssh, and cwrsync. Ran into all sorts of troubles, including not being able to get cwrsync to run (it installs properly, but never starts up), and copssh not generating the keys at all. The guy was running Windows Server 2003, though, so I'm guessing the problems could just be because I'm running Windows 7. I've been trying to set it up with my Windows machine being the rsync server, and then Ubuntu and my webhosting VPS as the clients, but I realize it may be easier (and make more sense) to just setup the rsync server on Ubuntu, and then an rsync client on Windows 7? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm thinking of using this guide: http://www.gaztronics.net/rsync.php It seems a bit outdated, though.

• Compilation of Etherpad fails in an OpenVZ VE

  Hi everyone. I’m almost giving up, this will be my last try: I try to compile Etherpad on my OpenVZ server. It’s running a Debian 5.0 as the host system, in the VE I’ve got Ubuntu 10.04. I installed Etherpad in this VE with the instructions from the official Ubuntu Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Etherpad. Everything runs fine until it comes to compilation. After calling bin/build.sh as described in the wiki the first steps are running fine. But then I’m running into a memory error: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "cp": java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory Well, I understand the error message but don’t see the cause. The command free tells me that there’s plenty memory left in this VE: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2415236 1140872 1274364 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1140872 1274364 Swap: 0 0 0 Beautiful. But even repeating the compilation process doesn’t bring me any further. Any help would be appreciated.

• Command+Tab not working on MacOSX Client with Synergy

  I have an Ubuntu 11.10 laptop paired with an Apple Wireless Keyboard. I'm using the answer on this question to swap the Command and Option keys so that they are mapped like a regular keyboard. This works fine in Ubuntu. Now I have a Macbook Pro running as a Synergy Client. This mapping kind of works on the Macbook, but it only allows me to Command+Tab between two programs, not all of them. Copy, Paste, and other Command keys seem to work fine, but not Command+Tab. It's annoying just because I use the keyboard a lot. And yes, I could switch to syncing the keyboard and the Macbook, but I use the Ubuntu laptop more.

• Virtualbox won't run Fedora 10 64 bit iso

  I am using VirtualBox on a Ubuntu 10.04 64bit host. I would like to install a Fedora 64bit guest. When I try to run the 64bit live cd, it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." after which I get a blue background with no menu options. I am familiar with Ubuntu but not Fedora. I have been able to install a Fedora 32 bit system just fine. Any suggestions? I am trying to run an rpm that won't run in Ubuntu even using alien. .

• Change Apache DocumentDirectory path in trueCrypt partition

  Hello, I'm recently moving from windows to linux, so I've setup my machine to dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I was able to successfully setup Apache on the Ubuntu partition, but I need to move the DocumentRoot since my websites are on a TrueCrypt partition that is in another hard drive so I can have them accessible in both OS. I followed some guides on how to change the path for the DocumentRoot so I end up modifiying the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available DocumentRoot /media/truecrypt1/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /media/truecrypt1/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> Those are the lines that I've changed, but now when I go to localhost I always get the Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. • View apache server across virtual machine?

  I installed VirtualBox on my Windows 7 machine. Through VirtualBox, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with apache2. I can view http://localhost from Ubuntu, but is there anyway I can view it from my windows machine too? i.e. run the apache server on ubuntu, and view it from windows? I figured it would open a port or something that would be visible to my whole computer regardless of its virtualness, but I guess not. How do I get around this?

I want to install OpenStack, so I enabled the Cloud Archive repo: sudo add-apt-repository cloud-archive:havana After the subsequent update and upgrade, I noticed python-crypto changed. python-crypto recently fixed a CVE, so I would like to ensure I'm using the patched version of python-crypto. I'd also like to compare the python-crypto in both Ubuntu and Cloud Archive. How does one list the package information for both Ubuntu::python-crypto and CloudArchive::python-crypto? (And sorry I could not tag this with apt-cache. Its not available in the list of tags). Thanks in advance

• Can't access the Internet in VMware Workstation

  I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS. In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet. I've tried the following but with no success: Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work. Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC - neither of them work. I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months - previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?

• Booting a native Windows install in Virtualbox: is it possible?

  I am looking for something similiar to Bootcamp. Currently, I run Ubuntu Maveric as my primary operating system and run Windows 7 in Virtualbox. For some tasks, however, running Windows virtualized just seems to result in too much overhead and speed loss, and I'd like to be able to boot natively. The ideal situation would be to setup Windows and Ubuntu in dual boot on seperate partitions, with the ability to boot the Windows partition in Virtualbox on Ubuntu as well. Is this possible? Also, how it is that Bootcamp seems to be the only system capable of this?

• Out of nowhere, ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

  I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a remote box. I ssh to it everyday without issues but today out of the blue, I get the following error: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host If I connect with -vv, I get the following: OpenSSH_5.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 debug1: Reading configuration data /Users/bla/.ssh/config debug1: Applying options for ubuntu-server debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to ubuntu-server.com [123.123.123.123] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----END' debug1: identity file /Users/bla/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /Users/bla/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host If I remove the key, I get the exact same output (sans "debug2: key_type_...). I've managed to log in physically and checked my hosts.allow and hosts.deny but they have no entries. I tried removing and reinstalling OpenSSH, checked authorized_keys and ~/.ssh permissions and tried connecting from other computers only to get the same error. I'm at my wits end, any help would be greatly appreciated.
