• Copying files within a Workgroup

  I have three boxes operating in a Windows Server workgroup within a closed network. (No Domain / No AD) There are several derivations of the scenario that I'm about to outline, but I'm sure I will be able to retool the solution as and when I need. Essentially the boxes are: 2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard 1 x Windows Server 2000 Standard I need to be able to schedule the copying/and-or/moving of files from various directories and each of the boxes. Each box has a different username and password for the administrator. I have PowerShell 2.0 on the two Win2K8 boxes (obviously). Previously I have used mapped network drives to copy the files, and cmd line batches, but I'd much rather use Powershell if possible (with Shares and/or $ notation). However the Copy-Item cmdlet doesn't seem to be processing the Credential correctly. Perhaps some Powershell gurus out there might be able to help me. Essentially I'd like to schedule a PS run of script to push backup files onto my WIn2k box (old fileserver) periodically.

This is an application that contains private business data, and thus is traditionally run in a secure private network environment within the enterprise. What are the challenges that appear when my enterprise desires to move the processing component of this application to a cloud computing data center in order to achieve greater scalability or to reduce IT costs ? • DNS server at router level vs. computer level

  I've three questions. Is it better/faster/optimal to set up your server's preferred and alternate DNS servers in your OS's network settings or in your router settings? Will it cause problems if it is set up in both places, both pointing to the same IPs? I am running Windows and I have my network assign a static IP to one of my computers. This doesn't allow me to obtain the DNS server addresses from my router automatically. Is there an IP I can put in that will cause it to take the DNS server addresses from the router?

• Mac friendly file sharing from VirtualBox

  I have set up Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu into a VirtualBox instance on my PC, I enabled Samba and I'm connecting to it via the home network from my Mac. All is fine except that I have some issues deleting some files from inside applications e.g. in Sublime Text 2 when I right click a file in the browser and select delete nothing happens (same in my Git client). To be able to delete files I have to navigate to the folder in Finder (which leaves those nasty .DS_Store files scattered all around) or issue the delete command from the terminal (inconvenient). If you're asking why I'm using VirtualBox for Rails instead of doing the development directly on the Mac it's because the ease of portability. So my question is: are there any network sharing options which I could use to make the Linux instance play nicer with my Mac?

• Remote installing an msi on citrix servers using WMI

  OK, I'm a C# programmer that is trying to streamline the deployment of a custom windows form app I inherited and built an installer for with WiX (this app will need to be reinstalled regularly as I'm making changes to it). I'm not really used to admin type things (or vbs, or WMI, or terminal servers, or Citrix, and even WiX and MSI are not things I usually deal with) but so far I put together some vbs and have an end goal in mind. The msi does work, and I've installed it from the mapped O: drive on my dev machine and while RDP'd to a citrix machine. End Goal: Deploy code written on my dev machine and compiled into an MSI (that I can improve upon within the confines of WiX and whatever the Windows Installer Engine allows) to the cluster of Citrix machines my users have access to. What am I missing in my script to get the MSI to execute on the remote machines? Layout: Machine A is my dev machine, and has the vbs script and the msi file (XP SP3) Machines C1 - C6 are the Citrix Servers that need the application installed them via the msi (Server 2003 R2 SP2) There is also optionally a shared network resource that all the machines can access.   I recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.9. on snow leopard i was able to make time machine backups over the network to my nas, i think i had to tweak some settings but i dont recall what i did. now that i upgraded to mavericks, i cannot do backups to my nas using time machine. my question is, what do i have to do to allow time machine backups over the network in 10.9? i tried looking for solutions online but did not find anything relating to mavericks.

• Can't send email through Comcast SMTP to my domains

  I am a Comcast customer with 3 computers and 3 computer users in the house. There are 2 fully updated Macs and one PC running Windows 7. We use Mail on the Macs, and Outlook on Windows 7. All computer accounts are configured to send mail through port 587 of smtp.comcast.net. I also have two personal domains registered with Network Solutions. For the sake of this discussion, call my domains myOwnDomain1.com and myOwnDomain2.com. I have email addresses at both domains. They are of the form [email protected] and [email protected]. Until recently, our email worked as expected. However, sometime between September 13, 2012 and September 19, 2012, we lost the ability to send email through Comcast's SMTP server to the email addresses at my personal domains. If we attempt to send email through Comcast's SMTP to those addresses, the email never arrives. Furthermore, the email clients give no indication of failure. The email just never arrives. The result is the same on all 3 computers and with all accounts on those computers. We can successfully send email through Comcast's SMTP from any of our accounts on any of our computers to any email address other than to my email addresses at my personal domains! However, I receive email at those domains that is not sent through smtp.comcast.net. For example, I can successfully send email from my gmail and yahoo accounts to my email addresses at my personal domains. Furthermore, I can successfully send email through smtp.myOwnDomain1.com to [email protected] and through smtp.myOwnDoman2.com to [email protected]. Comcast says the problem must be at Network Solutions. According to Network Solutions, their logs show they are not blocking reception of the email, and our IP address is not flagged as a spam source. They say the email is simply not arriving. Does anyone have any ideas why we can't send email through Comcast's SMTP server to my domains? As an odd coincidence, we recently noticed a change in Comcast's SMTP service. there is now a 5 minute delay on all outbound mail. Comcast's SMTP server seems to sit on the mail with a 5 minute timer.

  Hi, I have successfully configured Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 with SQL Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 all 64 bit, however when I tried to access this particular SQL Server 2008 DB instance from another SQL Server 2008 SSMS in another Windows Server 2008 it failed ? what I did is to disabled the IPv6 IP address using the regedit but still the problem hasn't been fixed even after restart ? I have enabled the named piped as well but still no luck ? any help please ? Here's the error message: " A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. It also said that there is a network configuration problem. And when I inputted the ip address from whatismyip.com which should be the same as the ip address on local machine. I didn't get the previous error but I got another one, it said that: insufficient permissions to connect to "ip address" What solution can you suggest for this problem?

• Debugging IO limitation

  I have a Fedora box with some severe IO limitations which I have no idea how to debug. The server has a Areca Technology Corp. ARC-1130 12-Port PCI-X to SATA RAID Controller with 12 7200 RPM 1.5 TB disks and a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8050 PCI-E ASF Gigabit Ethernet Controller. uname -a output: 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Apr 5 19:59:38 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The server is a file server running Nginx with the stub status module enabled, so I can see the current amount of connections. The problem present itself when I have a high number of simultaneous connections in a writing state. Usually around 350, at this very moment it's at 590 and the server is almost unusable and stuck at 230mbit/s. If I run stop and hit 1 to see CPU core usages I have all 4 cores with around 99% io wait, if I run iotop the nginx workers are the only processes producing any read load, currently at around 25MB/s. I have each of the workers bound to their own core. Initially I figured it was just the disks being bugged. But I've run fscheck and smartmontools checks and found no errors. I also ran an iozone test which you can see the result of here: http://www.pastie.org/951667.txt?key=fimcvljulnuqy2dcdxa Additionally, when the amount of connections are low I have no problem getting a good speed. If I wget over the local network it easily hits 60MB/sec. Right now I just tried putting a file in /dev/shm, then I symlinked a file from the public dir to it and used wget over the local network and only got 50KB/s. Also, if I try to cp /dev/shm/test /root/test it quickly copies around 740MB and then slows down HEAVILY. Again with iotop reporting 99% iowait. I'm not really sure how to go about figuring out what the problems are. It could be a natural disk limitation but then the file from /dev/shm ought to transfer so it seems there's a network limit, but that's fine when there's not many connections. Perhaps it's a TCP stack problem but I really have no idea how to check that. Any suggestions on how to proceed with debugging would be very welcome. If additional information is required then let me know and I'll try to get it. Thanks.

  I'm trying to setup a home network between a windows 7 and windows xp machine. I have a small hub. My XP computer has a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.10) and I set my Windows 7 machine to have a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.15). The XP computer works, but the Windows 7 machine does not see the network. It says that there is no connectivity. Ping does not work from either machine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  Getting people to "like" a brand is important because it opens the door to a possible B2C relationship. Once a person likes that brand, the brand can post to their newsfeed with promotions, announcements, and surveys. At least for me, I "hide" the noisy brands and just monitor the ones that keep posts under 4 times a week. I see lots of people, especially with fashion brands, comment on postings at which point the posting is seen by their network. A metric I've heard (but not verified) is that for every person that comments, ten of their friends see the original posting. That's a pretty cheap way to communicate to potential customers in a viral way. Over at mainstreet.com they compiled the a list of the top liked retailers on Facebook as of Feb 1, 2011. To take this to the next level, Facebook is now displaying Sponsored Stories, which I saw for the first time on my page this weekend. I found this picture at the Wall Blog that depicits Sponsored Stories very well. Over on the right-hand column of a person's page, where they see advertisements and such, Facebook will post stories involving their network of friends and their interaction with sponsored brands. Now their "likes" can suddenly become your ads. "Jessica and Philip like Starbucks. What are you waiting for?" This is another great way to take messages viral by accessing social graphs. As usual there will be a certain level of outcry from privacy advocates, but given the other more iniquitous issues, I believe this will fall by the wayside. Retailers should consider using Sponsored Stories to increase their Likes, and thus increase their voice in the social world.

  Hi, I have a wifi network at home with a couple of laptops. I am running a Tapestry webapp on my machine. I can access this webapp from the other laptop if I use the IP address of my machine (I mean enter something like : http://192.168.1.53:8080/webapp/index.html). Now, I also want to access the same webapp through my iPodTouch which is also in this wifi network. However, when I try to do so in Safari on iPodTouch, it fails. • Windows 7 Internet Sharing - How to have simultaneous Internet Access to my client

  The condition: I'm running on windows 7, I'm using a usb broad band for my computer, then my computer is connected to the router tp-link tl-wr340g (in this sense my computer is the internet source since my router has no usb port for this type of broad band). I set the broad band to have internet sharing. I got 3-4 client connected through the router. The problem is whenever a client is using the internet, other clients including me don't have internet connection, additionally, If I have the internet access other clients don't have internet access. In my setup in windows XP (bridging the broad band and the router network) it works perfectly fine, every one has simultaneous internet. To clarify, how can I have all clients including me have internet connection simultaneously in my windows 7 OS? //Additionally, the create "network bridge" setup is missing, from this link the "Bridge Connection is missing", how can I fix that?

• Compaq Presario CQ40 unexpected turn off

  My Compaq Presario CQ40 (yeah, its pretty old) suddenly turns off after about 1/2 - 1 hour usage without any notice or warning. The power cable and adapter works fine (indicator bulbs show that power is given to the laptop), but it seems like machine suddenly plugged off from the power source. And when I try to switch it on, after the sudden turn off it simply won't turn on. I can only turn it on after letting it to rest for at least couple of hours! ** The battery has been dead for some time now, but it has been working fine on direct power supply until recently. Has anyone encountered this? and hopefully knows any cure?

  I am in the process of learning as much as I can about LAMP. I was wondering if I should set a web server on my home network, or use a service like Rackspace (cloud space)? I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network. Pricing for these cloud hosts, seems reasonable ($11 per month plus about $0.10 per GB of bandwidth), but I am not sure if I will have to control I am looking for.

• How to copy files from shadow copy with long source path

  The files and folders in my shared network drive (set up with DFS) were mass deleted. Currently I am trying to recover the files from the shadow copy "Previous Version". Problem is, thousands of files are deeply nested with long paths making the file path too long. When copying, it shows the dialog "Source Path Too Long". My guess is that the file path just barely hits the limit when saved into the network drive, but shadaw copy service appends the date and time to the folders so the path character limit is exceeded. How else can I copy the files from shadow copy?

• Windows clients not using NTP server provided via DHCP

  I have a network consisting mostly of Windows Vista and 7 clients and an Ubuntu server. The server provides both the DHCP and NTP services through dhcp3-server and openntpd. In my dhcpd.conf, the subnet is declared as follows: subnet 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 10.10.10.10 10.10.10.200; option broadcast-address 10.10.10.255; option routers 10.10.10.1; option ntp-servers 10.10.10.1; } The clients don't seem to be using the NTP server though. When I capture the network traffic with Wireshark during the DHCP process, I also see no mention of the NTP option in the DHCP offer message. I am not quite sure if the clients would have to specifically request that option to receive it or if I have to make another configuration to offer the option.

  Hello everyone, I'll try to explain my situation and I'll apreciate any help: I have a phisical server (quad core, 4Gb ram, 1TB raid 10, etc) with Win Server 2008 R2 enterprise, running IIS, Printing, etc... Also, I want to set up 2 virtual Servers with 2008 R2 standart one with SQL Server and the other with Team Foundation. What i need is: Being able to access from inside the private phisical network, to Remote Desktops on each of the Virtual and the phisical Servers Had Access from the outside, using a router and port Forwarding, to the TFS server and the IIS server (one is virtualized, the other is phisical) This is it, but note that I only have one Phisical Nic. How do I configure this to work. When i set up the hyper-v role, on the wizard something like it showed up but I don't remmember what i choose, and right now, I cannot access none of the servers from remote desktop, not even from the phisical private network. Can anybody point me, what can i do? Thanks in advance (sorry 4 my english, i'm a spanish talker and my english isn't that good)
