• Java EE Website Planning Questions

  I'm a .NET programming who is soon moving to the Java EE world. I have plenty of experience with .NET web technologies, web services, WebForms and MVC. I am also very familiar with the Java language, and have written a few servlets and modified a couple of JSP pages, but I haven't touched EE yet. I'd like to set up a public website using Java EE so I can familiarize myself with whats current. I'm thinking just a technology playground at this point with no particular purpose in mind. What Java technologies are the current hotness for this sort of thing? (For example, if someone asked me what I'd recommend learning to set up a new .NET site, I'd say use ASP MVC instead of WebForms and recommend LINQ-to-SQL as a quick, simple and widely used ORM.) So, what I'd like to know is: Is there a recommended technology for the presentation layer? Is JSP considered a good approach, or is there anything cleaner/newer/more widespread? Is Hibernate still widely used for persistence? Is it obsolete? Is there anything better out there? (I've worked with NHibernate some, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch.) Is cheap Java EE web hosting available? What should I know being a .NET web developer moving to the Java world?

• QT4 Designer - Implement Widget

  I'm currently trying to get into QT4 and figure out a workflow for myself. While trying to create a widget which allows the user to connect to a hostname:port some questions appeared. The widget itself contains a LineEdit for entering the hostname, a SpinBox for entering the port and a PushButton which should emit a connect(QString hostname, unsigned int port) signal. In QTDesigner I created the necessary Form. It is saved as a .ui-File. Now the big question is how could I implement the widget? Is there a place in QTDesigner where I could add my signal to the Widget? Where could I add custom Properties? I've learned in another tutorial, which showed how to create a Widget in C++, how signals, slots, Q_PROPERTIES etc are defined and added to the widget. But there is no sourcecode in QTDesigner. Another option would be to generate sourcecode using uic. But the header says, that another generate would overwrite any changes to the sourcefiles. So how can I create a QT-widget completely with my own signals, slots and properties by using the QTDesigner for creating the UI and not having to recode everything whenever the UI is changing. Is there some kind of Roundtrip-Engineering? If thats not possible: Whats the sense of creating a Widget with QTDesigner then?

• jsf messed up links

  I'm new to JSF. My application is working, but I'm confused with links in browser when using controller. BTW, there is also PrimeFaces in my app so don't be suprised with p: tags. Let's say I have 'list' and 'show' pages with controller doing redirection between them. First I'm on http://localhost:8080/y/r/conversation/list.xhtml page. There is link created with line <p:commandLink action="#{lazyConversationBean.doShow(conv)}" ajax="false" value="View"/>. lazyConversationBean acts here as my Controller. There is method: public String doShow(Conversation c) { this.setSelectedConversation(c); return "view"; } from which I got redirected to ...... again http://localhost:8080/y/r/conversation/list.xhtml (browser shows it) even when it's correct http://localhost:8080/y/r/conversation/view.xhtml page. There I have link <p:commandButton action="#{lazyConversationBean.doList()}" ajax="false" value="Back to list"/> and again controller has method: public String doList() { return "list"; } from which I got redirected to ... yeah, you guessed right ... http://localhost:8080/y/r/conversation/view.xhtml (that is again what browser shows) even when again it is correct http://localhost:8080/y/r/conversation/list.xhtml page. It seams as browser link area is always one step behind page currently being displayed. I don't even know if it's some incorrect behaviour as I have no idea how to query google for this :D Just for test I did this short tutorial, where netbeans created whole stack of code on one of my entities, and behaviour was the same, so it's not PrimeFaces magic related. Can you tell my why it happens, and how to fix it? Users likes to copy correct links ;)

• entity framework vNext wish list

  I have been intensively studying and use ef4 in my project. I do feel the improvement that it has over version 1. But I found that I have something I cannot get around easily. Here is a list I want it to be better in ef vNext. the model designer should allow multiple view of the same model, so that I don't need cram all my entity into a single view. respect user's manual edit of edmx. Currently, the some database view object simply can not be imported to the model because the designer "smartly" think that the view does not have a primary key, so that I have to manually edit the edmx to correct designer's behavior. But in the next "update from database" task, designer will revert my customization. For now, I simply fallback to manually edit the edmx file at all, or I have to use compare tool to keep the new update, and rollback and put the new update into my old edmx file manually. Designer should be improved to allow default behavior and user's manual control. I want control not to let the designer refresh the change of imported object. support user defined table function. linq is about Composability, stored proc dos not support composability. I wish I could use user defined table function which support this. What are you wishes for EF vNext?

• (500) Internal Server Error with C# and Web Dev 2008 Express

  The code below is generic, found in a variety of places, including a book I have. I have used it as a base for a working program in VS 2005. Now I've resurrected it with my current Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition and I seem to have problems connecting it to my default development server (I don't have IIS on my XP). The error is: (500) Internal Server Error.   I am following the http://wiki.fluentnhibernate.org/Getting%5Fstarted tutorial to create my first NHibernate project with Fluent NHibernate I have 2 tables 1) Account with fields Id AccountHolderName AccountTypeId 2) AccountType with fields Id AccountTypeName Right now the account types can be Savings or Current So the table AccountTypes stores 2 rows 1 - Savings 2 - Current For AccoutType table I have defined enum public enum AccountType { Savings=1, Current=2 } For Account table I define the entity class public class Account { public virtual int Id {get; private set;} public virtual string AccountHolderName {get; set;} public virtual string AccountType {get; set;} } The fluent nhibernate mappings are: public AgencyMap() { Id(o => o.Id); Map(o => o.AccountHolderName); Map(o => o.AccountType); } When I try to run the solution, it gives an exception - InnerException = {"(XmlDocument)(2,4): XML validation error: The element 'class' in namespace 'urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'meta, subselect, cache, synchronize, comment, tuplizer, id, composite-id' in namespace 'ur... I guess that is because I have not speciofied any mapping for AccountType. The questions are: How can I use AccountType enum instead of a AccountType class? Maybe I am going on wrong track. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

• Qt 101: Why can't I use this class?

  I have experience with C++ but I've never really used Qt before. I'm trying to connect to a SQLite database, so I found a tutorial here and am going with that. In the QtCreator IDE, I went to Add New -- C++ Class and in the header file pasted in the header the header from that link and in the .cpp file I pasted the source. • Setting up a domain using WAMP and NameCheap's DNS service

  So, I've been working on this for far longer than I should be and I'm quite thoroughly perplexed and lost. I apologize if this turns out to be a facile question, but I'm entirely befuddled and very much in need of some guidance. Earlier today I registered a cheap .info domain on NameCheap just to play around with as I learn webdev. I have WAMP installed on my computer and I've been testing my projects through localhost. I thought it would be a good idea to have a domain at my disposal in order to understand how it works and better test my work. NameCheap has a complimentary DNS service (not that I entirely understand what DNS is, although I tried), so I'm using that. I direct both the "@" and "www" host names to my IP address, as shown in the below tutorial: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/319/78/how-can-i-setup-an-a-address-record-for-my-domain However, now when I go to the URL of the domain I bought, it confronts me with a login box that seems to be coming from my wifi network. How do I set this up so that it hosts the information in my WAMP server? Thanks in advance for any help, I really appreciate it. And, as a side-note, what should read (print or online) to better understand the structure of the internet? I've been studying HTML/CSS/Javascript, but I'm not sure where to look for pragmatic and comprehensive information on how the internet works and how to utilize it as a website administrator. • Technology and language for a stable Digital Audio Workstation development

  Hi, I'm designing a cross platform (Windows/Linux/OS X) application, something like a digital audio workstation. I'd like to create a software where users have a fully featured sequencer (multiple tracks with automation) and where it is possible to create instruments using a visual language (as Pure Data/Max MSP). Ehm... I know that I've already posted a question about a related issue... But in order to decide which technology I should use, I think I'd better to make more investigation. I'm a quite experted user of audio trackers (Renoise, Protracker,...) and sequencers (FL Studio, Cubase 5), but I didn't ever try to develop even a basic audio tracker. I know just the basic theory of mixing sound and know how basically a DSP works. My questions are: Where I can find a good tutorial/guide/book about this issue? Do you think using C# (with NAudio) could dramatically reduce performance? I know C++ would be the best choice, but I find C# so elegant and easy to build and port, while C++ is so powerful and fast, but there are too #define and bad things for my taste! ;-) Thank you.

• Gridview Paging via ObjectDataSource: Why is maximumRows being set to -1?

  So before I tried custom gridview paging via ObjectDataSource... I think I read every tutorial known to man just to be sure I got it. It didn't look like rocket science. I've set the AllowPaging = True on my gridview. I've specified PageSize="10" on my gridview. I've set EnablePaging="True" on the ObjectDataSource. I've added the 2 paging parms (maximumRows & startRowIndex) to my business object's select method. I've created an analogous "count" method with the same signature as the select method. The only problem I seem to have is during execution... the ObjectDataSource is supplying my business object with a maximumRows value of -1 and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I've searched to the end of the web for anyone else having this problem and apparently I'm the only one. The StartRowIndex parameter seems to be working just fine. Any ideas?

• Access modifiers - Property on business objects - getting and setting

  Hi, I am using LINQ to SQL for the DataAccess layer. I have similar business objects to what is in the data access layer. I have got the dataprovider getting the message #23. On instantiation of the message, in the message constructor, it gets the MessageType and makes a new instance of MessageType class and fills in the MessageType information from the database. Therefore; I want this to get the Name of the MessageType of the Message. user.Messages[23].MessageType.Name I also want an administrator to set the MessageType user.Messages[23].MessageType = MessageTypes.LoadType(3); but I don't want the user to publicly set the MessageType.Name. But when I make a new MessageType instance, the access modifier for the Name property is public because I want to set that from an external class (my data access layer). I could change this to property to internal, so that my class can access it like a public variable, and not allow my other application access to modify it. This still doesn't feel right as it seems like a public property. Are public access modifiers in this situation bad? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I have the following code which is in a transaction. I'm not sure where/when I should be commiting my unit of work. On purpose, I've not mentioned what type of Respoistory i'm using - eg. Linq-To-Sql, Entity Framework 4, NHibernate, etc. If someone knows where, can they please explain WHY they have said, where? • Cache data in SQL CE database

  Background I have an SQL CE database, that is constantly updated (every second). I have a (web) application that allows a user to look at the data in real-time. At some point a user can click "take a snapshot" button, and it will open the snapshot in a different window. And then on that form, there is "print" and "download" buttons that will either generate a page for printing, or will stream the data as CSV file - but same data snapshot has to be used, i.e. I can't go to the DB to get latest data for that. Details SQL CE dabatase is exposed through WCF web service. Snapshot consists of up to 500 records, 10 columns each. Expiration time on the snapshot of 2 hours is sufficient. It is a low-traffic application, so I don't expect more than few (5) connections at the same time. Loosing snapshot is not a big deal, user can simply generate new one. database is accessed by self-hosted WCF web service using Linq-to-SQL. Web site is ASP.NET MVC hosted on UltiDev Cassini. database, and web site are most likely be on the same box, when deployed. The entire app is intranet bound. Problem I need to cache the snapshot of the data at the moment user pressed "take a snapshot" button, so that I can use same data to generate print page, or generate a file for download. Solution 1: Each time there is a need to generate a snapshot, I will create a table in the database. Since there are no temp tables in SQL CE, I will need to clean it up myself. Solution 2: Cache the snapshot in-memory on either DB server, or web server. Question: Is there anything wrong with proposed solutions? Any different solution suggestions?

  So I'm trying to learn more about lambda expressions. I read this question on stackoverflow, concurred with the chosen answer, and have attempted to implement the algorithm using a console app in C# using a simple LINQ expression. My question is: how do I translate the "var result" of the lambda expression into a usable object that I can then print the result? • Really cool way to create custom UITabBar for iPhone app?

  Hi, I am doing a lot of researching lately about how to get a different looking with nice effects UITabBar on my iPhone app, but unfortunately I am only finding things on how to replace background color etc. Well, I've checked out this app called Momento which is pretty cool and presents a very slick tabBar: So there are a couple of elements here I would like to ask you guys if you could help me by giving me the right directions on how to get a similar effect :) Arrow above items: as you can see this app has this animated arrow that runs above the selected item with a very smooth animation. Selected Stated of the item's image is not that blue-ish default one neither the default state which displays in a different shade of brown and gray version. nice Items separators with beveled vertical lines. diferrent background image for the tabBar different height for the tabBar At this point after some research I am able to set the height and background image by subclassing UITabBarController but I'm still not sure on how to accomplish the other items specially the first one related to the nice arrow effect. If someone knows about a very good tutorial on how to do this it would be great for clarifying what can or can't be done by subclassing the UITabBarController and specially if can be done in Interface Builder :) I am just starting on this world off app development for iOS so if you could help me on that it would be really appreciated Thanks a lot in advance

• using a 64-bit compiler in microsoft visual c++

  this question is essentially identical to an earlier question i had that didn't receive any answers. hopefully someone can help me out this time. i am trying to compile a vc++ project as 64 bit using visual c++ express 2010. i know that the 64 bit compiler does not come with the default installation of vc++ express so i installed windows sdk for windows 7 as specified here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/9yb4317s.aspx) which includes the 64 bit compiler as i understand. however, there is still no 64 bit option in the configuration manager for vc++. after some searching i found and completed this tutorial (http://jenshuebel.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/visual-c-2008-express-edition-and-64-bit-targets/) as well as the various links at the bottom of this page. despite all my efforts, i still cannot get the 64 bit compiler to show in vc++ (i.e. the 64 bit compiler won't show under "active solutions platform" in the configuration manager). if anyone has any experience/tips with getting this to work i would really appreciate it. fyi - i am running windows 7(x64).

What confuses me is that I've done something just like this before with no problem, so I'm not sure why it's not working. • Developing Air (Flex) Applications for Android and Desktop

  I am an experienced Flex and Air Developer and love Android having owned a G1, a milestone (Droid), a Nexus One, a Galaxy S and now a Nexus S. Understandably I am interested in developing Flex applications for Android. I have just started working through the flex for android in 90 mins tutorial here: http://coenraets.org/flexandroid90/FlexAndroid90Minutes.pdf The very first step says that I have to create a Flex Mobile Project. I was under the impression that the whole point of Air is that the same application could run on many different platforms. I was intending on creating an air app with different skins that could be swapped in and out depending on the platform it was running on. This seems to imply that I will have to compile my Air app once for desktop and once for mobile. This isn't the end of the world but it's not quite how I expected it to work. I suppose that if I am creating mobile specific skins then I may as well create a mobile specific app. Is it possible to create one Air app that will run on both mobile and desktop? Is this a good idea?

• Property on business objects - getting and setting

  Hi, I am using LINQ to SQL for the DataAccess layer. I have similar business objects to what is in the data access layer. I have got the dataprovider getting the message #23. On instantiation of the message, in the message constructor, it gets the MessageType and makes a new instance of MessageType class and fills in the MessageType information from the database. Therefore; I want this to get the Name of the MessageType of the Message. user.Messages[23].MessageType.Name I also want an administrator to set the MessageType user.Messages[23].MessageType = MessageTypes.LoadType(3); but I don't want the user to publicly set the MessageType.Name. But when I make a new MessageType instance, the access modifier for the Name property is public because I want to set that from an external class (my data access layer). I could change this to property to internal, so that my class can access it like a public variable, and not allow my other application access to modify it. This still doesn't feel right as it seems like a public property. Are public access modifiers in this situation bad? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I've looked for a tutorial and can't seem to find one for a activity indicator in a table view nav bar. in my mainWindow.xib I have a Tab Bar Controller with 4 Tabs controllers each containing a table view. each load JSON feeds using the framework hosted at Google. In one of my View Controller I can add an activity indicator to the nav bar by using: UIActivityIndicatorView *activityIndcator = [[UIActivityIndicatorView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0,0,20,20)]; [activityIndcator startAnimating]; UIBarButtonItem *activityItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:activityIndcator]; self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = activityItem; however and can turn it off by using: self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem.enabled = FALSE; But if i place this in my viewDidLoad event it shows all the time. I only want it to show when I select a row in my table view. so I added it at the top of didSelectRowAtIndexPath and the stop line after I load a feed. it shows but takes a second or two and only shows for about half a second. is the an event that firers before the didSelectRowAtIndexPath event a type of loading event? if not what is the standard menthord for implementing such functionality?

• Alternatives to the Entity Framework for Serving/Consuming an OData Interface

  I'm researching how to set up an OData interface to our database. I would like to be able to pull/query data from our DB into Excel, as a start. Eventually I would like to have Excel run queries and pull data over HTTP from a remote client, including authentication, etc. I've set up a working (rickety) prototype so far, using the ADO.NET Entity Data Model wizard in Visual Studio, and VSTO to create a test Excel worksheet with a button to pull from that ADO.NET interface. This works OK so far, and I can query the DB using Linq through the entities/objects that are created by the ADO.NET EDM wizard. However, I have started to run into some problems with this approach. I've been finding the Entity Framework difficult to work with (and in fact, also difficult to research solutions to, as there's a lot of chaff out there regarding it and older versions of it). An example of this is my being unable to figure out how to set the SQL command timeout (as opposed to the HTTP request timeout) on the DataServiceContext object that the wizard generates for my schema, but that's not the point of my question. The real question I have is, if I want to use OData as my interface standard, am I stuck with the Entity Framework? Are there any other solutions out there (preferably open source) which can set up, serve and consume an OData interface, and are easier to work with and less bloated than the Entity Framework? I have seen mention of NHibernate as an alternative, but most of the comparison threads I've seen are a few years old. Are there any other alternatives out there now? Thanks very much!
