  • How can I figure out if programming is right for me? [closed]

    I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this, and the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before (a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months since then and I feel like giving up. I didn't get much training... about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience is kinda making me rethink my decision. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if this frustration is normal. How can I tell if programming is right for me?

  • Ways to earn money through programming and/or programming knowledge [closed]

    It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

    Current field-of-use restrictions defined in "Oracle Binary Code License Agreement for the Java SE Platform Products" prohibit its use in embedded systems. "General Purpose Desktop Computers and Servers" means computers, including desktop and laptop computers, or servers, used for general computing functions under end user control (such as but not specifically limited to email, general purpose Internet browsing, and office suite productivity tools). The use of Software in systems and solutions that provide dedicated functionality (other than as mentioned above) or designed for use in embedded or function-specific software applications... are excluded from this definition and not licensed under this Agreement. Do these restrictions also apply to OpenJDK and other possible implementations? Is the only way to use Java in such an environment to acquire a separate license from Oracle?

  • What is the starting point for Ubuntu app development? [closed]

    I'm thinking of developing software for Ubuntu and other related Linux-based distros (like Linux Mint). But currently am at a loss for where to start. Would learning Python be enough/good? And what are the other things I should know about before starting this kind of developing? And will I be able to publish my apps to a software store like Ubuntu store even if I am from outside USA/UK? If not, what are the options I have to make my apps reach the audience? As a lot of users had asked, I intend to build applications only for Linux (I'm thinking of Gnome) that will be a bit business and enterprise oriented. Currently I am an Oracle certified Java developer in J2SE and J2ME. And I know Python a bit.

  • Technology to communicate with someone with expressive aphasia?

    A family member had a stroke a few years back and now has expressive aphasia. She understands what is said to her, is cognitive of what is going on, but cannot express herself. She is able to respond to yes/no questions (do you want to go shopping? are you looking for your earrings?) She is not, however, able to read (English is not her native language and she hasn't read Hindi for decades.) I am the technologist in the family, and I intend to come up with something to help us communicate. The idea is to have some sort of picture book where she can point to what she wants. My first question: does some sort of assistive technology for people with expressive aphasia already exist? These can be hardware or software devices? If not, then such a software doesn't seem difficult to write. My initial thought is to have an interface with pictures - maybe separated by category (food, shopping) - where she can point to an individual picture to indicate what she needs. We could easily add more items with such a software, and we could have an interface where she (or we) could "flip pages". Which suggests that the best solution would use a touch screen rather than a mouse. It would be really difficult to train her to aim a mouse or find keys on a keyboard. We're thinking of maybe getting a tablet and writing some basic software. But tablets computers are expensive and fragile - I'm not sure if it would be able to stand spills or being knocked about in a nursing home. So my next question: what kind of tablet-like devices are out there which I can program on? I don't know anything about hardware, but if there is something then we could special-order it. What would be safe and durable for such a project? We could do something on an iPod or cell phone, but I feel like that interface would be too small. Finally, does anyone here have experience with this kind of assistive technology? Things I might not anticipate when designing such a system? edit I've added a (pretty hefty!) bounty. I'd kinda like to open this question up to any suggestions, comments, and experiences that people might have. This is a pretty real and important project, so while we will (are working on) a solution, any insights would be particularly helpful. Right now the plan is to mount a screen in her room. We'll either teach her to use a trackball or use a touch-screen panel, after seeing what she is able to use with a simple prototype.   • How to deploy a visual studio custom tool?

    Hello. I have a my own custom tool for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. It consists of 5 assemblies: 3 assemblies with code that used heavily in my other projects, 1 assembly-wrapper above VS2008 SDK and assembly with the tool. If I'd debug my tool from visual studio, using "Run external program" option with command line "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" and arguments "/ranu /rootsuffix Exp" all work perfectly. After that I trying to deploy it to my working VS copy, not to experimental hive doing: gacutil /i Asm1.dll for all my assemblies and doing RegAsm Asm1.dll only for assembly with custom tool. Neither of utils prints any error, all work as planned, even registry keys appeared. But my tool don't work even after PC restart. What did I do wrong?   • Problem with cometd and jetty 6 / 7

    Hi chaps, I'm trying to get started with cometd (http://cometd.org/) and jetty 6 or 7, but I seem to be having problems. I've got an ant script that packages my code up into a war with the cometd 1.1.1 binaries and jetty binaries that are appropriate to the version of jetty I deploy the war to (so 7.1.2.v20100523 binaries when I deploy to jetty 7.1.2.v20100523 and 6.1.24 when I deploy to 6.1.24).   • WiX major upgrade refuses to replace existing file!

    Hello! I have inherited this project with a WiX installer, and am required to make this version usefully upgrade the previous one! My problem comes in replacing the database files with new versions. No, the problem is not that they are locked, I can replace them manually, and in fact now ONE of them is replaced, while the other is not. Please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried several other solutions (including registry keys as KeyPath instead of CompanionFile) but nothing is quite working.   • Developing ASP.NET MVC UI Extensions - best approach

    What are the best practices in developing rich UI extensions for ASP.NET MVC (I mean asynchronous / partial loading, slick effects, skinning etc) ? I saw that Telerik has an MVC suite of extensions, but haven't tried them yet, so I cannot comment on them. My biggest concern as of the moment is how to structure the code of my extensions so that C#, ASP markup, and JQuery remain separate from each other, yet encapsulated in a way that the extension must be easy to distribute and reuse. I know that the user control approach had many flaws, yet it sort of allowed application developers to just reference a control, set some parameters and get it going in a few minutes. I'd like to achieve the same kind of portability/reusability as I still keep the code easy to extend and build upon. Now, some ideas that come to mind as topics for discussion are: template helpers vs. extension method helpers or a possible integration efficient use of jQuery - naming conventions - - asynchronous action loading - etc you can add whatever comes to your mind

    ARGH! Wix is driving me crazy. So, of course I have seen the many posts both here on stackoverflow and elsewhere about WiX and major upgrades. I inherited this software project using WiX and am releasing a new version. I need this new version to leave ONLY the one configuration file if it's present, and replace everything else. This installer works EXCEPT no matter what I have done so far, the new XML file replaces the old on every install. Even attempting to use NeverOverwrite="yes" and even trying and messing back and forth with OnlyDetect="no"! I am simply stuck and humbly request a little guidance.   • Hadoop or Hadoop Streaming for MapReduce on AWS

    I'm about to start a mapreduce project which will run on AWS and I am presented with a choice, to either use Java or C++. I understand that writing the project in Java would make more functionality available to me, however C++ could pull it off too, through Hadoop Streaming. Mind you, I have little background in either language. A similar project has been done in C++ and the code is available to me. So my question: is this extra functionality available through AWS or is it only relevant if you have more control over the cloud? Is there anything else I should bear in mind in order to make a decision, like availability of plugins for hadoop that work better with one language or the other? Thanks in advance

  • Best Java 'framework' for LOW-END 3D Graphics?

    I've made my share of 2D games on various platforms but I have never developed a 3D game. I want to make a small "mmorpg". I already made my server in python and it works just fine with my flash 2D game but I decided I want to step it up and try out 3D. I want to make a 3D game for the web browser and I think Java might be a good choice for this. So basically I'm just looking for a straight forward and well documents 'framework' to make LOW-END 3D games. Keep in mind that I will be targeting peoples with very low-end PC's (plus my 3d modeling skills aren't great so I wouldn't mind hiding it somewhat, haha)

    I am looking for a quality reliable host for some lithium development. I don't mind a shared platform as long as I have some ssh access. I require php 5.3.x, Mysql 5.x, and the usual imageMagick etc. Non-relational DB support up front would be nice but if they let me set one up myself I would be okay with doing it. I don't need a lot in the way of control panel tools. Good ones are appreciated but bad ones I would prefer not to even deal with. I don't anticipate needing much in the way of email but mail support would be nice to have. Cost isn't a big issue. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg but don't mind paying for what I need. Good support and decent uptime would be nice but I don't need an SLO or anything.
