• Auto-detect proxy settings for the network

  Firefox browser contains network settings under Tools--Options--Advanced--Network--Settings and there is an option to do auto detect proxy settings, how should I enable this? Currently this is manually configured and its possible for users to bypass and use the internet directly. We use a variety of browsers (firefox, IE, chrome, safari, opera) on win xp, win 2003, win vista machines. How should I enable this so that the end user cannot manipulate the settings on his browser to by pass security. I have configured a squid cache proxy server for this purpose.

  I'm starting to use command line a little more, and I see there are a lot of ways to configure some config files in my $HOME. This is good, since you can customize it the way you really like. Unfortunately, for begginners, having too many options is a little confusing. For example, I created .bash_alias for some alias I'm using. I didn't even know this option existed, I'm used to simply edit .bashrc. Do exist a pattern, a "good practice", envisioning flexibility and modularity in terms of rc files structure? Do exist a standardization group for this, or every body just creates it's own configuration setup?

• SEO consideration for duplicate sites

  I am building a brochure-ware website for a company that sells products all across the world. They need the site to ask the user what region they are in before using the site; there are 5 regions. This is because there are different products offered to different regions and each region may or may not want to customize their own content. However, at launch and likely forever, most of the pages will be the exact same minus what is listed in the footer and in the product selection menu. My question is how should I structure the sitemap for this site for best SEO? Should I be concerned with duplicate content penalties and/or cannibalizing the site's presence on the SERP? Some considerations: The client wants to be able to print links directly to regional specific content bypassing any prompt for the user to select a region (to ensure they land on the target page). The client cannot have a 'default' region so the user must have a region specified "Clean" urls are important, but there is wiggle room The client does not want each region to have its own domain There will be a link on the page to allow users to specify a different region The client is not concerned with localization ...at this time Some products are available in multiple regions A quick list of options I am considering: www.site.com/region/page region.site.com/page www.site.com/page?region (no cookie, pages require the parameter. • Mouse pointer size inconsistent

  Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I've been having a problem with the mouse pointer size. On the desktop, it is quite a bit larger than it should be (24), though the different cursors (editing text, hyperlink hand, etc) are correct. The size changes to the correct size when the pointer is over some application windows (GVim, Netbeans, Firefox), but then changes back once it is moved out of the window. There was a similar question here, but the Xdefaults solution did not work for me, and I didn't want to try the one requiring editing the icon image. In addition, I've tried changing the cursor theme using sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme as well as using the dconf-editor, but though I can change the theme, the size issue remains. In case it's relevant, I'm running on a dual-screen setup with monitor sizes of 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, using the NVidia video driver. Is there another way to control pointer size, or a setting that might be messing it up? EDIT: These are the values/options I have for update-alternatives and in dconf-editor. • local wordpress installation not accessible from the outside world

  I have a working installation of wordpress located in /var/www/html/wordpress It is accessible in my local network at [local-machine-ip]/wordpress/ There is also a test page located in /var/www/html/test.html It is also accessible in my local network at [local-machine-ip] I would like the wordpress website to be accessible from the outside world. I know that my ISP blocks incoming requests on port 80, so I set my router to redirect requests from port 8080 to 80. • Is there a fix for an iMac G5 annoying screen pattern issue?

  It's probably a hardware issue, but I was hoping that someone might know of other options to try. My iMac G5 (the revision just before the built-in iSight was introduced) has developed an annoying pattern of short/wide rectangles in a pinkish hue across the screen. I've followed Apple's instructions to ensure that the logic board hasn't failed (by resetting the SMU and watching the internal LEDs light-up). I suspect either the LCD or video card has failed. Below are two screen shots, one taken by my iPhone which exhibits the problem and a snapshot taking from the faulty iMac which looks fine.

  I'm 24 and have a lead role in a major news outlet in my country, with a good pay and public image in the horizon. I hold a job that was previously held by people with 15-20 years of experience and considered one of the top 5 news anchors in my country. My passion though, is computers. The web, to be precise. I was a problogger at a very young age. I hacked my way through CSS and some basic HTML and PHP. But I want to move forward - I want to CREATE not just STRUCTURE things. Giving up the present (and especially the seemingly promising future) in my current industry is hard, my friends raise their eyebrows... I'm considering a BsC. in computer Engineering - but my stats are short of getting into a good university for this discipline. Plus, I'm not the best with math - although I do exceptionally well in statistics and other numbers that are more applicable to real life. I tried learning PHP through online websites, but that just "doesn't cut it" for me. Nope. So what are my options here? if I don't want to build hardware or and deal with overly-complex algorithmic but would like, for example - to build a well functioning iPhone and iPad app, or a SaaS, a startup...do I have to go the BsC. route? I don't see any option to get an "official" education in strictly "web" concepts and languages.. Note: I'm well off financially, so I'm doing this more to be able to create stuff, rather than get a job in a corporations. Although if I land somewhere high, that might be an option. But my main concern is getting the tools.

• Is there a way to expose ports when the three default firewalls were disabled

  I think I disabled the three firewalls that come with FreeBSD (just for experimentation purposes). I checked the modules that load with the kernel (using "kldstat"). The only modules that load are: kernel -- ng_socket.ko, netgraph.ko, ng_mppc.ko and rc4.ko). I'd like to know what module is still blocking my ports now. After removing all firewall options from the rc.file and re-compiling the kernel without the pf option (or any firewall for that matter), I can't still open ports freely. How does it work exactly? • Very Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I calibrated display color. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter. I tried to update the driver but the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

• Remotely enter encryption key?

  This might be a really dumb question but here goes, anyway. I just bought a couple servers. I already installed Ubuntu with encrypted LVM on one and I'm planning on doing the same with the other. This means that every time I boot up each of these machines, I have to enter the passphrase. And I'll have to do this every morning because I'll power each machine off each night for security reasons. Here's the problem: I don't have monitors or keyboards for these servers. It seems to me I have two options: Somehow enter the passphrase remotely Buy a KVM switch I doubt #1 is an option but I want to make sure it's not before I buy a KVM. Is it possible to enter the passphrase remotely? AND is it a good idea?

• Avoid putty ssh terminal to crash when disconnecting from server

  I'm connecting via ssh to a remote 'live' server where i have some bash scripts automated via the crontab, when an error happens in some of the automation scripts within the server, the connection to the server is killed, this is fine to me, but the problem is that Putty closes the entire window, which is a behavior i don't want. I have checked all around the web, unfortunately the putty site does not have a support page, but nothing. Under putty's option i have tried all the menus expanding all options, but still i cant find the right one, i would expect it to be under Windowbehaviour Do you have an advice? Thx

• Question about getting information off an old HD...

  Ok so my old cpu was a sony vaio. its kinda old and had xp on it. My gf thrashed it - the cd drive went and she tried fixing it by messing with the configurations bios etc. the actual laptop is really fried the keyboard doesnt work, etc. However the harddrive is still intact. I tried putting the HD in my new cpu (toshiba runnig win7) and it looks like its gonna boot up it goes to the screen with the logo and the status bar starts to load. then it flashes a blue screen for a split second, and goes to the black screen where it says windows did not shut down properly and gives options to (start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with prompts) ive tried every option but it always goes back to this screen. I need to get into the hd cuz i have very important files. is there anyway?

• Should I Open Source? [closed]

  My company recently created a full javascript, html & css Virtual Tour. Since it is html based there is no real way of securing our information/code so selling it could be flimsy. We are an extremely small company, barely on the map so I was thinking that by making this an open source project it could give us a chance to jump start our SEO by page views alone, especially if we provide documentation. Not to mention hopefully bring a community following on our blog. On the other hand though could this possibly hurt our sales as a web development company? If we are handing out this cool "plugin" we made what keeps people from making it commercial somehow? So I'm trying to weigh the options on whether I should make this Open Source or not and the pros / cons of each especially for a small business. What do you guys think about making things Open Source? How do I know if this product is the right thing to make Open Source? What are some pros and cons to going Open Source?

• Keyboard/Mouse not working when windows vista has reached login screen

  I currently have a problem with a system (vista home premium, 64bit). USB kbd/mouse will not work when windows has booted/loaded their drivers and Im stuck at the login screen with no working input devices. None of the available boot options after F8 will boot to working kbd/mouse. They work in the bios setup and they seem powered all the way until a few seconds before the login screen. Legacy USB devices is also enabled in the bios. They also work with the recovery dvd, but I am unable to start the device manager to check or uninstall the mouse/kbd drivers. Cant get devmgmt.msc nor devmgr.dll (with rundll32) to work. System repair does not detect the problem and there are no available restore points (it was disabled). Any ideas?

• How can I get logrotate dateext to reflect the log date rather than the rotation date?

  My Apache logrotate config looks like this: /var/log/http/*log { monthly dateext dateformat .%Y.%m [... rest stripped for brevity ...] } This works great, except that the date on the rotated filename is one period later than the period actually covered by the logs, for example error_log.2012.09 covers 2012-08-01 to 2012-08-31. I realize that there are other options for Apache (eg. cronolog), but I have a bunch of other logs that I also need to rotate, and logrotate is really exactly what I need apart from this one issue. Is there a way to get logrotate to use a date offset -- or, even better, figure out the previous time period -- when generating the rotated filename?

• Installing WiFi in a church for internet access

  Hi, a colleague at work asked this question: My local church want to get WiFi enabled in the whole of their offices and main church building. The offices and main building are in the same overall structure and so the signal does not need to travel outside to any other buildings outside this main structure. Where would I start on such a project and what kind of repeaters are needed (and how are they set up) given that some of the walls are pretty thick. Do you still have one ADSL line coming in to router or are there some options of having two lines coming in so that they isn't a single point of failure. Am looking at fibre for the broadband for increased speed. Any starting pointers appreciated.

• Chrome logs me out of everything when I exit--tried cookie-related stuff already

  I've been using Chrome very successfully for a long time. It has always kept me logged in to all my sites even after exiting the app. Recently it started logging me out of everything when I exit Chrome. I've fooled around with all the various advanced cookie settings, and I've cycled through the options hoping that Chrome just needed a wakeup call or a reset or something. I've also deleted all the cookies in case a corrupted one is confusing Chrome. Nothing works! I see cookies when I log in, but they all go away when I exit Chrome. I've searched all over the place and seen only the standard answers relating to resetting cookies, local data, sessions, that sort of thing. Any Chrome gurus out there, please send a telepathic message to my browser asking it to resume its previous excellent behavior. Alternatively, you could suggest other possible solutions.

• ASUS N550 laptop not charging on ubuntu after updating kernel

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 on a pretty new ASUS N550jv laptop. When I was using kernel linux-image-3.11.0-11 everything was quite well (kinda..), however, when I updated the kernel using the automatic update, the kernels which were released afterwards (12+) were faulty on my machine, and caused the battery not to be charged and only stay at their current charging level (even when the machine was off!) The only fix I had was to roll-back to the '..11' version (on boot screen - advanced options), and hard-reboot (AC cord disconnected and reconnected) but now version 14 was released and "pushed away" the good old version 11. How can I fix that?? Please help me...

• Need reasonably priced router with QoS support [closed]

  I dont need wireless. I am expecting very heavy traffic, with possibly thousands of tcp connections open at one time. This would require that the router has good hardware. I also need to limit the different services i will provide. Lets say i need to guarantee 60% of all the bandwidth to HTTP, 10% FTP, and 10% for Mail... So the router software must have flexible QoS options as well. I don't know which one to chooose, because this information is usually not given on the router specs.

• Most effective way to change Linux command prompt for all users?

  I have several machines and the hostnames are really long.. i.e. companyname-ux-staging-web1.companyname.com. So my prompt looks something like [root@mycompany-ux-staging-web1 ~]# I'd like to shorten that up for all users on all machines with the least amount of work. From what I read I have a couple options, but they all have their drawbacks. I could change the hostname, but that would likely affect applications. Not a great choice. I could alter also $PS1 at login for all users by editing all .bashrc for existing users, and edit /etc/skel/.bashrc for potential new users. That's a lot of work across 10 machines. What's my best option or what have I overlooked?

  Dropbox is perfect, but as a company, no one can host anything worthwhile on servers that we don't control. So I've been tasked with coming up with a Dropbox alternative, something in house. GlusterFS is nice, but no offline access. SparkleShare uses Git which isn't great for large files. It also doesn't have windows ports. Any other options? If I were to roll out my own from scratch, what do you think the based way to go about doing this would be?
