    We just finished a we-know-just-enough-to-be-dangerous migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008, and things seem to have gone relatively smoothly. After running the SBS 2008 Best Practices Analyzer on the destination server, we've got three warning messages, and I can't tell if they're important or not. First, the easy one: SMTP Port (TCP 25 Status): The Edgetransport.exe process should listen on SMTP port 25, but that port is owned by the process. I don't think that this one is a big deal--e-mail is flowing through the SMTP connector. Since there are two spaces between "the" and "process," I'm assuming that for some reason BPA just couldn't figure out the owning process name and this is just some sloppy programming when displaying the message. (Indeed, on subsequent runs of the BPA this message goes away, and other times it comes back.) Now, two more scary sounding ones: No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs sub-domain in the forward lookup zone for Windows SBS 2008. and, similarly, No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs zone for Windows SBS 2008. Now for these two, everything appears to be functioning correctly--but I'm assuming this is a weird state as a result of the SBS 2003 to 2008 migration. Can anyone provide any pointers on how to fix it, or whether or not it can be safely ignored? Thanks!

  • Too much memory consumed during TFS automated build

    We're running TFS 2010 Standard Edition, and we've set up an automated build to run whenever someone checks in code. We run through all of the automated tests (built with MSTest) as part of the build. We've configured the build to run the tests as a 64-bit process, but the QTAgent.exe that runs the tests grows in memory while the tests are running. It is currently reaching 8GB for the ~650 tests we have, and the process has slowed significantly when we went from 450 tests to 650 tests. When we run all of the tests in the local development environment, memory seems to be freed at least with each TestClass and never exceeds a certain level. The process of running all tests has not increased significantly in the local development environment. Is there a way to configure the build service to free up memory with each Test or each TestClass? With the way things are currently running, the build process gets very slow when we start to run out of memory on the machine. Edit: I found the MSTest invocation in the build log and ran it manually and saw the same behavior of runaway memory. I removed the /publish, /publishbuild, /teamproject, /platform, and /flavor parameters from the invocation of MSTest, in case the test runner was holding onto results until the end, but the behavior didn't change. I ran the same command line on a dev box, separate from the build server, and the memory freed up frequently. It seems there must be something wrong/different about the build server that is causing it to behave different, but I'm stumped where to look. I've looked at qtagent.exe.config, mstest.exe.config, versions of both executables. What else might affect this?

He explains how to get the numbers for an average process, which I get. But then: Or roughly 53MB per process...In this case, ten threads should be safe. This means that if we receive more than ten simultaneous requests, the other requests will be queued until a worker thread is available. In order to maximize performance, we will also configure the system to have this number of threads available all of the time.     I have a VPS running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I'm able to connect using Remote Desktop from my home PC (Windows 7), personal laptop (Windows 7), and work laptop (Windows XP). However, I cannot connect from my work PC (Windows 7). The server is part of a domain but my account is local, so I'm logging in using a username of the form hostname\username. None of the clients are part of a domain. The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

    I'm trying to run VirtualBox VM's in the background from a service. I'm having trouble starting a process the way I desire. I'd like to start the virtualbox guest in headless mode as a separate process and show nothing as far as GUI. It's also worth mentioning that I've tried using vboxmanage startvm "Ubuntu Server" --type=vrdp. I can determine whether the server started properly using this. But it shows a new command prompt window for the newly started VirtualBox guest.

In the meantime, I uninstalled that role but I still don't have an inetmgr (mmc snapin doesn't work either).

  • Memory leak in Google Chrome

    As a developer it is very common for me to have 2-3 different IDE's open, 10-15 google chrome windows which can hold up to 200 open tabs (I know I get out of hand some times), Photoshop, couple twitter bots for promo, and a few other programs but my system still runs fast and smooth. I have an i7 processor with 12gb ram. Now with all my usual stuff running my Physical memory is usually running around 50-60% however over the course of the day or much less even, I will gradually grow to 98% The highest Memory usage processes will be from Google Chrome, if I sort in the task manager by highest memory usage and end the 1 highest process which will be a google chrome one, my memory usage will jump back down to about 60%. Also by ending that 1 process, all my Chrome windows will remain open and in use, so it doesn't affect me at all by ending that process. Based on this research I am assuming that that 1 runaway process is likely the Adobe Flash as I also can say that it gets up to the 98% much faster when I am using flash items like video or music player. But even without using any of them it will still climb up to that high number eventually. Has anyone else experienced similar results?

  • ShareWebDb_log.ldf is 97GB - How to reduce?

    We run an SBS 2008 server with WSS. On the drive I have set aside for WSS, I'm fast running out of space due to the ShareWebDb_log.ldf file: I've tried doing to do what I've read online - change the recovery mode, backup and truncate - but I can't actually see how I do this via the SQL Server Management Studio tool. Can anyone shed any light? The database for this file does not show in the list, and I cannot expand Management SQL Server Logs (because it's too large?).

  • Mountain Lion overheating issue have to do with launchd/Python?

    So, Ever since I installed ML, my MacBook Air has been running SUPER hot. Opened up activity monitor, and everything seemed to be pretty normal, until I had it refresh every .5 seconds... and then I started seeing some interesting things. A 'Python' process appears and is terminated several times a second, and uses TONS of CPU 70-110. It's parent process is 'launchd' - and when I sample the process, there is a lot going on with Python. http://db.tt/ovuX3hZM These appear and disappear too quickly to get one... this one only happened to be using 70 ish percent of CPU... but they consistently hit 100-110%. http://db.tt/ovuX3hZMg The parent process... launchd. lots of context switches and UNIX system calls... What is the deal here? (photo goes here when I earn the street cred) The sample of launchd. ANY help here could be of help to not only me, but possibly many others experiencing decreased battery life and warmer laps these days because of this Mountain Lion weirdness. PLEASE HELP! From this machine I can open the Network Policy Server management console to administer this role. However, I have another Server 2008 R2 machine "WKS" in the domain where we have all the management consoles installed so we can manage all the servers from one location. I cannot find how to access the Network Policy Server console on this machine though.

  • Solaris SMF to Upstart on RHEL6

    I am planning a migration from Solaris/x86 to RHEL6. Part of this migration will be migrating services from SMF to the RHEL6 equivalent, which appears to be upstart. While init.d scripts still seem to be supported, I want to take advantage of a more sophisticated init daemon, especially for features like job supervision (restarting etc). I would like to gather some thoughts on a few points: 1) Is upstart an adequate job supervisor, i.e. does it preclude the need for stand-alone managers like daemontools/supervise? 2) Upstart scripts seem very bare-bones compared to a typical init.d script. If I was porting an init.d script to Upstart, is it OK to just "exec /etc/init.d/myjob start"? This include RHEL installed programs like httpd. 3) Does upstart do anything is regards to pid files, and what are it's expectations in regards to the forking model of the process? 4) Are there any straightforward guides to the process management aspect of Upstart...and by that I mean the conditions around controlling restarting? e.g. how many times to restart the process before it goes into a maintenance state, or to ignore errors/core dumps in child processes of the supervised process. Any other relevant ideas or guides would be appreciated. TIA

  • Service Unavailable - App Pool disabled error...anyone know why?

    Hi guys A small number of our sites intermediately experience an error that is a mystery to us. Our set up is: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 .NET 3.5 We have about 35 Websites running on IIS Each site has it's own App Pool Each App Pool has the identity: Network Service The symptom is: The Application Pool for a site stops, and when you browse to the site, you only see: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE In the Event Logs, we have one Error, that looks like this: Application pool 'AppPool1' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. And we have several Warnings leading up to the error, that look like this (note: the warnings look the same, except for the process id): A process serving application pool 'AppPool1' suffered a fatal communication error with the World Wide Web Publishing Service. The process id was '292'. The data field contains the error number. What's causing this? As I said, it doeasn't happen very often....the last time was about 6 months ago...and it usually happens with the same site/App pool. Any ideas? cheers!

  • How to stop/kill a virtual machine that hangs in "Stopping" state?

    Hi, I have a virtual machine that constantly hangs in the “Stopping” state. I’ve red several posts suggesting killing the vmwp.exe process of the machine but I’ve never been able to kill this process neither from the Windows Task Manager nor from an administrative command prompt by using prockill /PID xxxx /F where xxxx was the process ID. The only result that I have is that my machine enters in “Stopping-Critical” state. Even worse, from that point (having a virtual machine hung at stopping) I am unable to manage (stop or start) any other virtual machine on the same host. The only “solution” in that case for me is to stop the Virtual Machine Management Service (vmms.exe) and to restart the physical host. Without first stopping the vmms.exe service my physical host also hangs during the restart. Moreover, there is no any error logged in the Event Viewer. I’ve found some other posts complaining about them problem. On all of them the only suggestion was to kill the vmwp.exe process, which obviously doesn’t work for them too. Can somebody help us with this, pls? Thanks

  • Read-only access to MMC functionality

    Does anyone know of a Windows Server 2008 role(s) to allow readonly access to MMC (MS Management Console) facilities - i.e. we would like to be able to view (not add/update/delete) "Administrative Tools" functionality such as IIS websites, Event log, Users and groups, status of services, etc. This is so we can connect to a say a Development server (administered by another team) to check configuration before/during deployment via say Administive Tools | Computer Management | Connect to another computer Many thanks Travis
