• NSDate dateFromString, how to parse 'around' UTC, GMT and User locale?

  Hi I parse some values from an xml file. There is a @"25-12-2010'T'23:40:00"string with the time and date and there is a string with the GMT offset like this @"+0200". So the above time is the 25. of December 23:40:00 in timeZone +0200 GMT. (or 21:40 UTC) I have lots of these dates with different GMT offsets. I have to display these dates as they are, i.e. They must not be changed to fit the locale of the user. So if time 1: is 22:45 +0500 then that is what I must show the user, even if the user is in a different timezone. I have all sorts of trouble with displaying, calculating and parsing these strings. If I use a dateFormatter and dateFromString the user specific GMT info will be included in the resulting NSDate meaning the above will be saved as 23:40:00 +0100 GMT because that is my phones setting and maybe 23:40:00 -0400 on a user from new New York's phone. When I subsequently do subtraction, addition and comparisons between these dates I have to keep the GMT offset around and everything gets worse if the phone switches locale settings, from when the date was parsed to when the date is displayed... Is there a way for me to extract this date from the string as UTC, then save it as an interval instead of an actual (timezone dependent) date. I know that is how dates are always saved internally. But I can't figure out how to do it with the separate GMT string and taking into account the users locale. Cheers

• How do you handle 'SelectedItemChanged' events in a MVVM ViewModel?

  I have some logic that depends upon two properties being set, as it executes when both properties have a value. For example: private void DoCalc() { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(Property1) || string.IsNullOrEmpty(Property2)) return; Property3 = Property1 + " " + Property2; } That code would need to be executed every time Property1 or Property2 changed, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it in a stylistically acceptable manner. Here are the choices as I see them: 1) Call method from ViewModel I don't have a problem with this conceptually, as the logic is still in the ViewModel - I'm not a 'No code-behind' nazi. However, the 'trigger' logic (when either property changes) is still in the UI layer, which I don't love. The codebehind would look like this: void ComboBox_Property1_SelectedItemChanged(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { viewModel.DoCalc(); } 2) Call method from Property Setter This approach seems the most 'pure', but it also seems ugly, as if the logic is hidden. It would look like this: public string Property1 { get {return property1;} set { if (property1 != value) { property1 = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("Property1"); DoCalc(); } } } 3) Hook into the PropertyChanged event I'm now thinking this might be the right approach, but it feels weird to hook into the property changed event in the implementing viewmodel. • Why is OracleDataAdapter.Fill() Very Slow?

  I am using a pretty complex query to retrieve some data out of one of our billing databases. I'm running in to an issue where the query seems to complete fairly quickly when executed with SQL Developer, but does not seem to ever finish when using the OracleDataAdapter.Fill() method. I'm only trying to read about 1000 rows, and the query completes in SQL Developer in about 20 seconds. What could be causing such drastic differences in performance? I have tons of other queries that run quickly using the same function. • Calling up DockPanel-Suite's "AutoHidden" DockContent programmatically

  I am having trouble causing an 'autohide' dock to appear programmatically. Couldn't find any answer around the net, though the following SO Question suggested that .Show() should have done the trick I've tried this on the latest NuGet version of the code.   I'm having trouble saving a record in Subsonic 3 using Active record. I've generated my objects using the DALs and tts and everything seems fine because the following test passes. I think that my connection string is correct or the generation wouldn't have succeeded. • UISplitView show different views in the detail pane

  How can I change the view in the Details pane of the UISplitView so that its a completely different view? Im having a fair amount of trouble understanding how its all wired up and where things should go at the moment, could someone please enlighten me? What I would love to be able to do is to show a specific view based on what the user has selected in the UITableView on the left pane (this view could be an image, or a more complex view of a news article, etc... many different options) then when the user turns the iPad into portrait view, that view that was in the details pane changes to be its equivalent portrait view version. Does this make sense? How on earth would I do that? Just to brainstorm, here is what I was thinking: Create a Split View project Create 2 NIBs for each view: (with accompanying view controllers???) * PortraitNewsStory * LandscapeNewsStory * PortraitImageBrowser * LandscapeImageBrowser * etc... Create a UISplitView control using XCode Capture when a user rotates the iPad (should this be done in the RootViewController.m ?) Change the view of the DetailViewController how should I do this? profit??? Thanks Mark

• "Unable To Load Client Print Control" - SSRS Printing problems again

  Please forgive me as my head is spinning. I have tried so many solutions to this issue, that I'm almost not sure where I am at this point. At this point in time I have these issues in my Production, Test, and Dev environments. For simplicity sake, I will just try to get it working in Dev first. Here is my setup: Database/Reporting Server (Same server): Windows Server 2003 SP2 SQL Server 2005 SP3 Development Box: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 SP1 SQL Server 2008 SP1 (not being used in this case, but wanted to include it in case it is relative) Internet Explorer 8 Details: * I have a custom ASP.NET application that is using ReportViewer to access reports on my Database/Reporting Server. * I am able to connect directly to Report Manager and print with no trouble. * When I view source on the page with ReportViewer, it says I'm am using version 9.0.30729.4402 . * The classid of the rsclientprint.dll that keeps getting installed to my c:\windows\downloaded program files directory is {41861299-EAB2-4DCC-986C-802AE12AC499}. * I have tried taking the rsclientprint.cab file from my Database/Reporting Server and installing it directly to my Development Box and had no success. I made sure to unregister the previously installed dll first. I feel like I have read as many solutions as I can, and so I turn to you for some assistance.   Hi, I'm having trouble using a tab bar control. Basically, when I build and run I'm just getting the blank white default "Window" screen. I was following this guide: http://www.iphoneosdevcafe.com/2010/03/assignment-4-part-1/#comment-36 Drag a Tab Bar Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Tab Bar Controller. Drag a Navigation Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Navigation Controller. Drag a second Navigation Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Navigation Controller. This completes all the connections between the App Delegate and the tab bar and two navigation controllers. By using IB to set up the tab bar and navigation controllers in this way, you need not allocate and init the controllers in AppDelegate.m. When you build and run this, you will see the tab bar controller and two navigation controllers. Is there a step there that he missed? How do I hook the Tab Bar Controller up to the Window? EDIT: Do I need to do something like this? mainTabBar = [[UITabBarController alloc] init]; [window addSubview:mainTabBar.view]; That's still not working, but I feel like I'm on the right track? Why can't this all be done from Interface Builder?

  I'm having a real trouble to get accents right, and I believe this may happen to most Latin languages, in my case, portuguese I have a string that come as parameter and I must get the first letter and upcase it! That should be trivial in ruby, but here is the catch: s1 = 'alow'; s1.size #=> 4 s2 = 'álow'; s2.size #=> 5 s1[0,1] #=> "a" s2[0,1] #=> "\303" s1[0,1].upcase #=> 'A' s2[0,1].upcase #=> '\303' !!! s1[0,1].upcase + s1[1,100] #=> "Alow" OK s2[0,1].upcase + s2[1,100] #=> "álow" NOT OK I'd like to make it generic, Any help? [EDIT] I found that Rails Strings can be cast to Multibytes as seen in class ../active_support/core_ext/string/multibyte.rb, just using: s2.mb_chars[0,1].upcase.to_s #=> "Á" Still, @nsdk approach is easier to use =)

• Create custom rewrite rule for my WordPress plugin

  I'm writing a plug-in for WordPress which in fact will be a separate ordering module (it will be placed in an IFRAME on the site I'm developing as well as others) but with its admin tied into WordPress. I wrote the administration part without too much hassle, however I'm having trouble with the front-end. First of all I'd like my script to be accessible via www.mysite.com/order/ and, as per the WordPress codex, I found I need to place the following code into my main plugin file: add_action('init', 'ta_flush_rewrite_rules'); function ta_flush_rewrite_rules() { global $wp_rewrite; $wp_rewrite->flush_rules(); } add_action('generate_rewrite_rules', 'ta_add_rewrite_rules'); function ta_add_rewrite_rules( $wp_rewrite ) { $new_rules = array("order/(.+)" => "/wp-content/plugins/my-plugin/order.php"); $wp_rewrite->rules = $new_rules + $wp_rewrite->rules; } But it doesn't work and I don't really want to get dirty with .htaccess hacking. Furthermore even if this would work, the order.php file is a separate file from my plugin. This means that I'll have to include some WordPress files in order to have access to the database and other helper classes and functions. That brings us to question number 2: is there a way for the URL to call a function of my plugin to render the order page?

• VB.Net plugin using Matlab COM Automation Server...Error: 'Could not load Interop.MLApp'

  My Problem: I am using Matlab COM Automation Server to call and execute matlab .m files from a VB.Net plugin for a CAD program called Rhino 3D. The code works flawlessly when set up as a simple Windows Application in Visual Studio, but when I insert it (and make the requisite reference) into my .Net plugin and test it in the CAD program I get the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.MLApp, Version 1.0.0.0, culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. the system cannot find the file specified." What I've Tried: I am baffled as to why this occurs, but I was able to contact the CAD program's technical support staff and they suggested that it has something to do with their DotNet SDK having trouble with references that are located far outside the CAD program directory. They didn't have any solutions so I tried playing around with copylocal and this made no difference. I tried using other COM libraries and the Open Office automation server works fine, although uses url's instead of requiring a reference. I also tested Excel, which does require a reference, and it returned the error: "retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {...} failed due to the following error: 80040154." This may or may not be related to the issue with the Matlab COM reference, but I thought was worthwhile to share. Perhaps is there another way to reference Interop.MLApp? I would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts on how I might make the Matlab Interop.MLApp reference work. Best regards, Ben

  I'm trying to learn how to use CALayers for a project and am having trouble getting sublayers to display. I created a vanilla View-based iPhone app in XCode for these tests. The only real code is in the ViewController which sets up the layers and their delegates. There is a delegate, DelegateMainView, for the viewController's view layer and a second different one, DelegateStripeLayer, for an additional layer. The ViewController code is all in awakeFromNib, - (void)awakeFromNib { DelegateMainView *oknDelegate = [[DelegateMainView alloc] init]; self.view.layer.delegate = oknDelegate; CALayer *newLayer = [CALayer layer]; DelegateStripeLayer *sldDelegate = [[DelegateStripeLayer alloc] init]; newLayer.delegate = sldDelegate; [self.view.layer addSublayer:newLayer]; [newLayer setNeedsDisplay]; [self.view.layer setNeedsDisplay]; } The two different delegates are simply wrappers for the CALayer delegate method, drawLayer:inContext:, i.e., - (void)drawLayer:(CALayer *)layer inContext:(CGContextRef)context { CGRect bounds = CGContextGetClipBoundingBox(context); ... do some stuff here ... CGContextStrokePath(context); } each a bit different. The layer, view.layer, is drawn properly but newLayer is never drawn. If I put breakpoints in the two delegates, the program stops in DelegateMainView but never reaches DelegateStripeLayer. What am I missing here? Thanks.

• .NET projects build automation with NAnt/MSBuild + SVN

  Hi everyone, for quite a while now, I've been trying to figure out how to setup an automated build process at our shop. I've read many posts and guides on this matter and none of them really fits my specifics needs. My SVN repository is laid out as follows \projects \projectA (a product) \tags \1.0.0.1 \1.0.0.2 ... \trunk \src \proj1 (a VS C# project) \proj2 \documentation Then I have a network share, with a folder for each project (product), which in turn contains the binaries, written documentation and the generated API documentation (via NDoc - each project may have an .ndoc file in the repository) for every historical version (from the tags SVN folder) and for the latest version as well (from the trunk). Basically, what I want to do in a scheduled batch build are these steps: examine the project's SVN folder and identify tags not present in the network share for each of these tags check out the tag folder build (with Release config) copy the resulting binaries to the network share search for .ndoc files generate CHM files via NDoc copy the resulting CHM files to the network share do the same as in 2., but for the HEAD revision of trunk Now, the trouble is, I have no idea where to start. I do not keep .sln files in the repository, but I am able to replace these with MSBuild files which in turn build the C# projects belonging to the specific product. I guess the most troubling part is the examination of the repository for tags which have not been processed yet - i.e. searching the tags and comparing them to a project's directory structure on the network share. I have no idea how to do that in any of the build tools (NAnt, MSBuild). Could you please provide me with some pointers on how to approach this task as a whole and in detail as well? I do not care if I use NAnt, MSBuild, or both. I am aware that this might be rather complex, but every idea and NAnt/MSBuild snippet will be a great help. Thanks in advance.

• Why do I get an error 'Cannot resolve symbol <symbolname>' in ReSharper?

  Using VS2008 and R# 5 I'm running into an odd situation, where on an aspx page I keep getting Cannot resolve symbol 'symbolname' But the code compiles and runs fine. While having a fix for this would be great, I'm just trying to figure out if I'm losing my mind. The CodeFile directive and Inherits directives are fine. If I compile the app or just let devenv sit for a bit it'll go away, but as soon as I save the aspx [via ctrl+s] R# suddenly has trouble with the Inherits attribute and flips out on every method in the page (OnClick etc). // Anonymized of course but otherwise intact <%@ Page AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="TestPage.aspx.cs" Inherits="TestPage" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" Title="Test Page Title" %> This is mostly just a grievance, because since the code compiles it doesn't stop me from doing what I need. I would post a bug report to the JetBrains site but first I would like to know I'm not alone. It could be my machine. Maybe when I roll to VS2010 in a couple weeks this will go away?

• nHibernate, Automapping and Chained Abstract Classes

  I'm having some trouble using nHibernate, automapping and a class structure using multiple chains of abstract classes It's something akin to this public abstract class AbstractClassA {} public abstract class AbstractClassB : AbstractClassA {} public class ClassA : AbstractClassB {} When I attempt to build these mappings, I receive the following error "FluentNHibernate.Cfg.FluentConfigurationException was unhandled Message: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail. Database was not configured through Database method." However, if I remove the abstract keyword from AbstractClassB, everything works fine. The problem only occurs when I have more than one abstract class in the class hierarchy. I've manually configured the automapping to include both AbstractClassA and AbstractClassB using the following binding class public class BindItemBases : IManualBinding { public void Bind(FluentNHibernate.Automapping.AutoPersistenceModel model) { model.IncludeBase<AbstractClassA>(); model.IncludeBase<AbstractClassB>(); } } I've had to do a bit of hackery to get around this, but there must be a better way to get this working. Surely nHibernate supports something like this, I just haven't figured out how to configure it right. Cheers, James

• UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleNone does not hide blue separator line when selecting in UITableView

  Before describing the problem, let me first point out that this is a distinct issue from this question. The Problem This screenshot was taken with a break set at tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath:, and as you can see in the simulator (far right of the image), there's a single-pixel blue line at the bottom of the selected cell. This is not the design asked for by the client, nor is it how this app used to behave: there should be no separator, even on selection. How I Got Here I'd initially designed this table view using custom UITableViewCell classes with corresponding nib (.xib) files and had no trouble with selections: the separator was hidden as desired. Predictably, scrolling was sluggish due to all the overhead from the view hierarchy, so I reworked the custom cells to use Loren Brichter's fast scrolling solution. Now scrolling is much faster, but I can't get rid of the separator for the life of me. What I've tried At the time of the screenshot above... the table view has "Separator [None]" in IB. the UIViewController that contains the table view has this line in viewDid Load: self.tableView.separatorStyle = UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleNone; As you can see in the screenshot, I inserted some unused lines to prove that separatorStyle is set as desired. Other testing confirms that tableView and self.tableView are equivalent pointers at that same breakpoint. I've also tried setting tableView.separatorColor to black and to clear, all with the same result: the cells look right until a selection is made.

• Report Model; problem regarding many-to-many relations

  I'm having trouble setting up a report model to create reports with report builder. I guess I'm doing something wrong when configuring the report model, but it might also due to change of primary entity in report builder. I have 3 tables: Client, Address and Product. The Client has PK ClientNumber. The Address and Product both have a FK relation on ClientNumber. The relation between Client and Address is 1-to-many and also between Client and Product: Product-(many:1)-Client-(1:many)-Address. I've created a report model (mostly auto generate) with these 3 tables, for each table I've made an Entity. Now on the Client Entity , I've got 2 roles, Address and Product. They both have a cardinality of 'OptionalMany', because Client can have multiple Addresses or Products. On both Address and Product I have a Client Role with cardinality 'One', because for each Address or Product, there has to be a Client (tried OptionalOne as well...). Now I'm trying to create a report in Report Builder (2.0) where I select fields from these three entities. I'd like an overview of Clients with their main address and their products, but I don't seem to be able to create a report with fields from both Address and Products in it. I start by selecting attributes from Client, and as soon as I add Product for example the Primary entity changes as if I'm selecting Products (instead of Clients). This is a basic example of a problem I'm facing in a much more complex model. I've tried lots of different things for 2 days, but I can't get it to work. Does anyone have an idea how to cope with this? (Using SSRS 2008)

• Differing paths for lua script and app

  My problem is that I'm having trouble specifying paths for Lua to look in. For example, in my script I have a require("someScript") line that works perfectly (it is able to use functions from someScript when the script is run standalone. However, when I run my app, the script fails. I believe this is because Lua is looking in a location relative to the application rather than relative to the script. Hardcoding the entire path down to the drive isn't an option since people can download the game wherever they like so the highest I can go is the root folder for the game. We have XML files to load in information on objects. In them, when we specify the script the object uses, we only have to do something like Content\Core\Scripts\someScript.lua where Content is in the same directory as Debug and the app is located inside Debug. If I try putting that (the Content\Core...) in Lua's package.path I get errors when I try to run the script standalone. I'm really stuck, and am not sure how to solve this. Any help is appreciated. When I print out the default package.path in the app I see syntax like ;.\?.lua in a sequence like... ;.\?.lua;c:...(long file path)\Debug\?.lua; I assume the ; means the end of the path, but I have no idea what the .\?.lua means. Any Lua file in the directory?

• How to parse a raw HTTP response?

  If I have a raw HTTP response as a string: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Tue, 11 May 2010 07:28:30 GMT Expires: -1 Cache-Control: private, max-age=0 Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Server: gws X-XSS-Protection: 1; mode=block Connection: close <!doctype html><html>...</html> Is there an easy way I can parse it into an HttpListenerResponse object? Or at least some kind .NET object so I don't have to work with raw responses. What I'm doing currently is extracting the header key/value pairs and setting them on the HttpListenerResponse. But some headers can't be set, and then I have to cut out the body of the response and write it to the OutputStream. But the body could be gzipped, or it could be an image, which I can't get to work yet. And some responses contain random characters everywhere, which looks like an encoding problem. It's a lot of trouble. I'm getting a raw response because I'm using SOCKS to send an HTTP request. The program I'm working on is basically an HTTP proxy that can route requests through a SOCKS proxy, like Privoxy does.

  Hi 'overflow! I'm having a bit trouble inserting into a mssql database using Entity Framework. There's two tables that I want to insert into, where one of table 1s fields is a foreign key in table2. • Integrate Google Maps API into an iPhone app

  Update: iPhone SDk 3.0 now addresses the question here, however the NDA prevents any in depth discussion. Log in to the iPhone Dev Center if you need more info. Ok, I have to admit I'm a little lost here. I am fairly comfortable with Cocoa, but am having trouble picking up the bit of javascript needed to solve this problem. I am trying to send a request to Google for a reverse geo code. I have looked over the Google documentation I have viewed here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/index.html http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/geocoding/ Even after a rough reading, I am missing a basic concept: How do I talk to google? In some examples, they show a url being sent to google (which seems easy enough), but in others they show javascript. It seems for reverse geocoding, the request might be be harder than sending the url with some parameters (but I hope I am wrong). Can someone point me to the correct way to make a request? (In objective-C, so I can wrap my head around it)

• Making a Text-To-Speech Wrapper in Android

  I am attempting to create a wrapper class for Google Android's Text-To-Speech functionality. However, I'm having trouble finding a way to have the system pause until after the onInit function has finished. • Comet and Simultaneous Ajax request

  Hi , I am trying to use a COMET solution using ASP.NET . Trouble is i want to implement sending and notification part in the same page. On IE7, whenever i try to send a request ,it just gets queued up. After reading on internet and stackoverflow pages i found that i can only do 2 simultaneous asyn ajax requests per page. So until i close my comet Ajax request,my 2nd request doesnt get completed ,doesnt even go out from the browser. And when i checked with Firefox i just one Ajax comet request running all time..so doesnt that leave me one more ajax request? Also the solution uses IRequiressessionstate for Asynchronous HTTP Handler which i had removed.but still it creates problems on multiple instances of IE7. I had one work around which is stated here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282402 it means we can increase the request limit from registry by default is 2. By changing "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server" key in hive "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" we can increase the number of requests. Basically i want to broadcast information to multiple clients connected to a server using Comet and the clients can also send messages to the Server. Broadcasting works but the send request back to server doesnt work. Im using IIS 6 and ASP.NET . Are there any more workarounds or ways to send more requests? • passing timezone from client (GWT) to server (Joda Time)

  I'm using GWT on the client (browser) and Joda Time on the server. I'd like to perform some DB lookups bounded by the day (i.e. 00:00:00 until 23:59:59) that a request comes in, with the time boundaries based on the user's (i.e. browser) timezone. So I have the GWT code do a new java.util.Date() to get the time of the request, and send that to the server. Then I use Joda Time like so: new DateTime(clientDate).toDateMidnight().toDateTime() The trouble of course is that toDateMidnight(), in the absence of a specified TimeZone, will use the system's (i.e. the server's) TimeZone. I've been trying to find a simple way to pass the TimeZone from the browser to the server without much luck. In GWT I can get the GMT offset with: DateTimeFormat.getFormat("Z").fmt(new Date()) which results in something like "-0400". But Joda Time's DateTimeZone.forID() wants strings formatted like "America/New_York", or an integer argument of hours and minutes. Of course I can parse "-0400" into -4 hours and 0 minutes, but I'm wondering if there is not a more straightforward way of doing this.
