• Using XML as data storage

  I was thinking about the XML format and the following quote: “XML is not a database. It was never meant to be a database. It is never going to be a database. Relational databases are proven technology with more than 20 years of implementation experience. They are solid, stable, useful products. They are not going away. XML is a very useful technology for moving data between different databases or between databases and other programs. However, it is not itself a database. Don't use it like one.“ -Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML by Elliotte Rusty Harold (page 230, Part 4, Item 41, 2nd paragraph) This seems to really stress that XML should not be used for data storage and should only be used for program to program interoperability. Personally, I disagree and .NET's app.config file that's used to store a program's settings is an example of data storage in an XML file. However for databases rather than configurations etc XML should not be used. To develop my point, I will use two examples: A) Data about customers with fields that are all on one level i.e. there are a number of fields all relating to one customer with no children B) Data about configuration of an application where nested fields and properties make a lot of sense So my question is, Is this still a valid statement and is it now acceptable to store data using XML? EDIT: I've sent an email to the author of that quote to ask for his input/extra context.

• Style bits vs. Separate bool's

  My main platform (WinAPI) still heavily uses bits for control styles etc. (example). When introducing custom controls, I'm permanently wondering whether to follow that style or rather use individual bool's. Pro Individual booleans Intellisense and refactoring tools reduce the "less typing" effort Single Purpose Entities more literate code (as in "flows more like a sentence") No change of paradim for non-bool properties These sound more modern, but also "soft" advantages. I must admit the "platform consistency" is much more enticing than I could justify, the less code without losing much quality is a nice bonus. 1. What do you prefer? Subjectively, for writing the library, or for writing client code? 2. Any (semi-) objective statements, studies, etc.?

• Gnome-Network-Manager Config File Migration

  I think I have an issue with gnome-network-manager, I used to have a lot of connections configured, Wireless, Wired and VPN. After upgrading to 12.04 (from 11.10) I lost every configuration. I realized that the configs that used to be saved in $HOME/.gconf/system/networking/connections now are being saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/. • How can I find and remove 6to4 from my system?

  Last week I installed Miredo and configured my system to handle IPv6 through 6to4 tunneling. It was easy and it worked well. So I decided I'd give Hurricane Electric's IPv6 connection a try. I've had a lot to learn, and I thought I had it all running (with a great deal of help from a very patient person at Hurricane: my LinkSys E3200 didn't like IPv6). But now, when all should be good, after I uninstalled Miredo and Teredo and whatever else, I find that there is "6to4 tunneling - another automatic tunneling," which I need to remove from my box. But I have no idea where or what it might be. Connected to my computer are a couple printers, an external hard drive, and a router (which has no settings for IPv6). All of these are, I think, innocent in this matter. So, how can I get rid of 6to4 tunneling, when I don't even know where it is? Is there someplace to look and find out what's going on? I'm pretty new to Linux and Ubuntu.

  Today I have been working on automatic deployment of an ubuntu server. I got stuck on automatic updating of the server using apt-get upgrade trying to upgrade to a new kernel. • Is this an apt-get issue or network issue?

  I just installed my first Ubuntu server (12.04) instance and immediately am noticing a few things: Running apt-get install or update fails (see below) Running ifconfig produces peculiar IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and my router does not see the server at all in its "Attached Devices" page (its a consumer grade Netgear) When I run apt-get I get 50+ of the following errors: Failed to fetch <some-http-url. Temporary failure resolving <blah.ubuntu.com I read up on this error for 12.04, and found some similar posts on this forum and on serverfault that recommended going into /etc/resolv.conf and adding an entry: nameserver 8.8.8.8 To my surprise, I found that /etc/resolve.conf was a symlink pointing to somewhere else and I had to delete it first, then create a new one with the entry indicated above. I restarted the server and tried running apt-get again: same results. How do I start diagnosing the problem (I'm a relatively new Linux/Ubuntu user)? Additional details that may help: This is actually a virtual machine running as a VirtualBox guest OS The physical host that is running this VM is my laptop which has a wireless connection; I'm wondering if (somehow) the laptop is getting the network wirelessly, but perhaps either the VBox VM and/or the Ubuntu server OS isn't configured for wireless and so nothing is "getting through"? Thanks in advance for any pointers! • Web Sites All Start When Debugging a Web Site - Visual Studio 2010

  I wanted to blog about this because it was an annoyance to me and I couldn't figure out why for quite some time. Have you ever tried debugging one web application in your solution but when you do, all other web sites in your solution build and then start up their respective Visual Studio Development Server? It's not a major problem, but it adds time to waiting for what you are actually trying to debug to start up. After digging through Visual Studio 2010 settings, I finally found the option to turn it off. It is called Always Start When Debugging and is located in the Properties pane for the web project (click on the project .proj file in Visual Studio IDE). This is set to True by default each time you create a new Web Application project. Setting this to false will solve your problems. You will need to set this to false for all web applications in your solution as shown below: In addition, you can set properties on which port the development server uses each time it debugs. This is helpful if you want the port to stay the same for testing purposes. In contrast, you can set it to use a dynamic port each time so if you have a co-worker that is debugging it on a different session on the same server, you won't run into any problems with using the same port. The machine won't allow you to debug two sessions on the same port. Pretty basic stuff but it seemed like a really quirky setting to me.

When I looked into the build log I saw that the Post-Build project was failing with the error message: "error PRJ0019: A tool returned an error code from "Performing Post-Build Event..." This was most frustrating especially since the solution was building without issue on my local development environment. The Post-Build project was a C++ project that basically called several batch files to unregister/register assemblies, copy resources and supporting files, and place other dependencies in the GAC. I decided to run each of the batch files manually to see if that would provide more information as to why this project was failing. This lead me to determine that the batch file that was placing assemblies in the GAC was the culprit and that it was failing to find a particular assembly. The missing assembly was the output of another project. The project that was not producing the expected output was another C++ project that called a batch file. This batch process was actually embedding resource files into an assembly and then copying the assembly to the expected location. The real confusion started when I looked back into my Subversion log and noted that nothing had changed in this project in more than 2 months! It was almost as if the project had stopped building altogether. But what would cause that?! The Configuration Manager, obviously! Checking the solution's Configuration Manager settings, I found that the project that was not producing any output was in fact not selected to be part of the build process when the "Any CPU" platform was selected. This was the problem! I had recently updated the CruiseControl configurations to force the solution to be built targeting the platform "Any CPU". As a result, the project that was at the root of the problem was not configured to be built and the post-build process was failing when it couldn't find what it needed.

• Launcher icon size and window behavior broken

  I have installed the nvidia driver for my graphic card, just following some tutorials what works fine now. After this I could set the Icon size of the launcher, windows had a nice litte shadow, resolution was better and the windows showed up a nice effect when popping up an or when bringing to full-screen... But today the this was just gone after reboot. What could this be? Nvidia xserver-settings are availible. I installed and reinstalled wine1.5 via the apt-get commands, so this might broke something. What can do to fix this again? Greetings philipp EDIT: I went on searching and all i found was that this problem might be connected to the mode of unit, so there is 2d and 3d, but could also be something else, just because setting the mode brings no change. EDIT 2: the version of Ubuntu is: 12.04 and it is a 64 bit environment the graphic card is: GeForce GT 330M Edit 3: Using maps.google in webGL mode does not work anymore too, it was working yesterday. • Change power button to 'Ask' in Xubuntu 13.10

  I have recently installed Xubuntu 13.10 on my Vaio vpcea making me a Linux beginner. The problem is that laptop's power button is right on the edge of the bezel making it far too easy to press accidentally, in my opinion a design fault by Sony. At present, when I press the power button it shuts down strait away and as you can imagine, when I'm accidentally pressing it all the time it gets very annoying! So I planned to change it to ask what I would like to do when I press it or at least ask if I'm sure. So I went through the xfce GUI options "Settings Manager" - "Power Manager" to the field "When power button is pressed", but it was already set to "Ask". So I did some digging and found a thread telling me to navigate to /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml where it said to find power-button-action and check that value="3". It already did. So I looked some more and found this thread which focuses on acpi scripts. I tried solution 1 & 2 using sudoedit to change the files accordingly (I have made executable bash shell scripts already so I think I followed them correctly), but still no difference. I also found this thread which instructed me to edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf so that HandlePowerKey=ignore. Still no luck. I even tried my own approach to completely disable /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh by renaming it powerbtn.sh.bak hoping for at least no response from the power button... and I have done many reboots in between... but still it shuts down! I have also read that some people have the file /etc/acpi/events/power_button, but I do not. So does anyone have any other ideas? What else could be executing the shutdown sequence Is there something I'm missing? I haven't undone any of these actions so every one of the above files is currently edited on my computer, with the exception that "Solution 2" automatically undone "Solution 1" above. Thanks guys.

• DNS NAmeserver Aname and cname records [closed]

  I am inexperienced in the configuration of DNS and have an issue with dominan hosting set up. I have two domains 'www.mydomain1.com' and 'www.mydomain2.com', with mydomain2 pointed at the same place as mydomain1. The domains were passed to me recently by the person who previoulsy controlled them. I have an account with Fasthosts in the UK. When I accepted the domains I could not access the DNS settings and inquired with fasthosts as to why. The reply was: The delegate hosting option for both domains were enabled and this is the reason why you were unable to find the option to edit the advanced DNS records. I have now disabled the delegate hosting option so you can now edit the advanced DNS records for both domains in your account. When I log into the Fasthost control panel now I can access the DNS controls but both domains have no A record or Cname record set up. I am concerned that Fasthosts have blatted the previous Nameserver entries and set me up on theirs but not added any record. 'www.mydomain1.com' currently still works but 'www.mydomain2.com' does not find the site anymore. I am worried I will lose mydomain1 to as the DNS changes filter through the system. my webhosting is at 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' and this is where I want both domains to point. Any advice would be much appreciated. One thing which is confusing me is that because I am on a shared server I have to put 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' to get to my site rather than just 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'. The form on Fasthosts for the A name record only allows an IP to be entered - does it add the mydomain1.com/ onto the end itself? Thanks for any help given - I'm quite worried about this David

  Today while playing with Google Chrome Omnibox, I notice a strange behavior. I guess there's some "hidden" web standard behind it, but can't figure it out. Here's how to reproduce: Go to http://edition.cnn.com/ Use the search function at the higher right corner, Search a random keyword, for example: "abc" Close the tabs. Open a new tab, type until Chrome reminds you about http://edition.cnn.com/, then press "Tab" The Omnibox now shows "Search CNN.com"! And when you type "abc" and press Enter, it uses the CNN search function to do the job, not Google! I also tried it for several different sites. To some it won't work. But to some sites, like CNN, vnexpress.net, it works after I use the search function of that site once. I also learnt about chrome://settings/searchEngines (type it in your chrome box and you will see), and learnt about you can add custom search engine in chrome. But the question is, why Chrome can realize the search URL automatically to some pages, and not others? It's not because some site subscribe to Google service, because I can do the same method for my site (http://ledohoanglong.wordpress.com), and I'm sure that there's no subscription. So I guess there's a method to "expose" the search function of a site, so that Google Chrome can catch it (after I call the search function of that site once, of courses). Does anyone know about how it works behind the scene?

• Recommendations for managing DNS issues when hosting customer sites.

  I'm working at a company which primarily provides SaaS products but also will host some of our customers corporate websites. My question relates to recommendations for managing DNS for client's domain names. My objectives: Not restrict my ability to change the server's IP address such as might happen when I move my servers to a new host. Not have to contact the customer to change their domain's DNS if I need to change the server's IP address. Often times, customers lose this information or have to track down the one person with any knowledge of the domain settings. Map both .clientdomain.com and www.clientdomain.com to the proper IIS site. However, I'm running into a couple of common problems: Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company does not allow for CNAME records. Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company will not let me create a CNAME entry for .spiffydomain.com because the given hosting company has created a SOA record for that entry or simply requires that .spiffydomain.com be an A record. I believe one solution to #2 is to use a wildcard for a CNAME entry (i.e. *.spiffydomain.com). Is that correct? How do other folks that are hosting many customer's site manage change of DNS entries on their servers?

  I have run out of space on my WinXP virtual machine, which I only gave 10 GB space for when I created it. Is there an easy way to increase it to, say, 20 GB? • How to run installation CD for second monitor?

  I am running ubuntu 14 off of a live USB. I have a second monitor that I would like to use while using ubuntu. It has an installation cd that you have to install before using, and when I click on the .exe file the Archive Manager tries to open it and says an error occurred while loading the archive. Thanks for the help. Edit: additional information It just doesn't show up when when I'm in the display settings area. I press the locate(name is probably something else) monitor button too. I know it needs the CD because when I was using it with Windows it didn't work until I went through the installation process on the CD. If ubuntu doesn't use .exe files is there a way to use the CD still? • 12.10 visual performance using nvidia driver

  My fresh ubuntu 12.10 install is slow, not something extreme but dragging windows, switching workspaces and things like that are just slow and look horrible. it feels like the fps is dropping in a game. Doing some photoshop work in windows was even a relief! This effect gets worse if I connect my external monitor. My system is an intel pentium dual core T4500 with 4gb memory and a GeForce 8200M G/integrated/SSE2 graphics chip. Nothing fancy but should be able to run ok. My "experience" in ubuntu is set to standard. (MSI cr500 laptop) I've installed the nvidia drivers, tried current and experimental and the experimental drivers seem to perform a bit better but overall bad anyway. I set the mode to adaptive in the nvidia-settings tool and it goes to maximum setting directly and doesn't come back. Using htop I found out that compiz or the X server always use a few percent of my cpu, more than I think it should and the time consumed is 5:18 for compiz, 4:33 for /usr/bin/X and 2:41 for google chrome(about 30 tabs open so not too strange I think.) What can I do to increase the visual performance cause this makes me not want to use ubuntu in public!

• Setting different default applications for different Desktop Environment

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with default Unity interface. I installed later the KDE desktop, XFCE, LXDE, gnome-shell and Cinnamon. The KDE comes with different default applications than Unity, such as kwrite for text editing, konsole as virtual terminal, kfontview for font viewing and installing, dolphin as File browser etc. Other DE come with some other default applications. The problem arises when you want to open a file such as a text file, with which can both be opened by gedit and kwrite, I want to use kwrite on KDE and gedit on Unity or Gnome. But, there is no way to set like this. I can set default application for text file by changing respective settings in both KDE and Unity, but It become default for both DE. For example, If I set kfontviewer as default font viewing application in KDE, it also opens fonts when I am in Unity or Gnome and vice versa. This is a problem because, loading other DE's program takes long time than the default one for the used DE. My question is: Can I use different default applications for different DE? How?

• In Ubuntu 13.10, none of the hotkeys of LibreOffice works in non-English keyboard layout

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the hotkeys/shortcut-keys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and work in English language only. While writing in any other language (i.e. any Cyrillic and/or any Bengali etc) it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: System Settings Text Entry. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] Now launch Writer. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - change the keyboard layout to English then press desired hotkey then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing.

• Bluetooth headset A2DP works, HSP/HFP not (no sound/no mic)

  My Philips SBH9001 headset pairs fine using Ubuntu 12.04. In the audio settings it's properly detected as A2DP device and as HSP/HFP device. Hardware: Thinkpad X230, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, Kernel 3.6.0-030600rc3-generic (build from Ubuntu mainline repo), Bluetooth device is USB-Id 0a5c:21e6 from Broadcom, Headset is a Philips SBH9001. Note: Kernel 3.6 rc3 is used because of a fix for audio on the dockingstation that is not in any previous branches. Playing audio in A2DP works just fine out of the box, but when switching the headset to HSP/HSP mode there is no sound nor does the microphone work.
