  • Java Applet in Firefox

    Hi All, I am facing a weird problem in Testing server while using applet (using embed tag) in my ASP.NET MVC application Applet works fine locally in both browsers IE and Firefox but when deployed to Testing server its throwing below exception for Firefox only (IE works fine).   • Cast to delegate type fails in JScript.NET

    I am trying to do async IO using BeginRead() in JScript.NET, but I can't get the callback function to work correctly. Here is the code: function readFileAsync() { var fs : FileStream = new FileStream( 'test.txt', FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read ); var result : IAsyncResult = fs.BeginRead( new byte[8], 0, 8, readFileCallback ), fs ); Thread.Sleep( Timeout.Infinite ); } var readFileCallback = function( result : IAsyncResult ) : void { print( 'ListenerCallback():' ); } The exception is a cast failure: Unhandled Exception: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.JScript.Closure' to type 'System.AsyncCallback'. at JScript 0.readFileAsync(Object this, VsaEngine vsa Engine) at JScript 0.Global Code() at JScript Main.Main(String[] ) I have tried doing an explicit cast both to AsyncCallback and to the base MulticastDelegate and Delegate types to no avail. Delegates are supposed to be created automatically, obviating the need for creating a new AsyncCallback explicitly, eg: BeginRead( ... new AsyncDelegate( readFileCallback), object ); And in fact if you try to create the delegate explicitly the compiler issues an error. I must be missing something here.

  • Should I be relying on WebTests for data validation?

    I have a suite of web tests created for a web service. I use it for testing a particular input method that updates a SQL Database. The web service doesn't have a way to retrieve the data, that's not its purpose, only to update it. I have a validator that validates the response XML that the web service generates for each request. All that works fine. It was suggested by a teammate that I add data validation so that I check the database to see the data after the initial response validator runs and compare it with what was in the input request. We have a number of services and libraries that are separate from the web service I'm testing that I can use to get the data and compare it. The problem is that when I run the web test the data validation always fails even when the request succeeds. I've tried putting the thread to sleep between the response validation and the data validation but to no avail; It always gets the data from before the response validation. I can set a break point and visually see that the data has been updated in the DB, funny thing is when I step through it in debug with the breakpoint it does validate successfully. Before I get too much more into this issue I have to ask; Is this the purpose of web tests? Should I be able to validate data through service calls in this manner or am I asking too much of a web test and the response validation is as far as I should go?

  • How do I read the manifest file for a webapp running in apache tomcat?

    I have a webapp which contains a manifest file, in which I write the current version of my application during an ant build task. The manifest file is created correctly, but when I try to read it in during runtime, I get some strange side-effects. My code for reading in the manifest is something like this: InputStream manifestStream = Thread.currentThread() .getContextClassLoader() .getResourceAsStream("META-INFFFF/MANIFEST.MF"); try { Manifest manifest = new Manifest(manifestStream); Attributes attributes = manifest.getMainAttributes(); String impVersion = attributes.getValue("Implementation-Version"); mVersionString = impVersion; } catch(IOException ex) { logger.warn("Error while reading version: " + ex.getMessage()); } When I attach eclipse to tomcat, I see that the above code works, but it seems to get a different manifest file than the one I expected, which I can tell because the ant version and build timestamp are both different. Then, I put "META-INFFFF" in there, and the above code still works! This means that I'm reading some other manifest, not mine. I also tried this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(...) But the result was the same. What's the proper way to read the manifest file from inside of a webapp running in tomcat? Edit: Thanks for the suggestions so far. Also, I should note that I am running tomcat standalone; I launch it from the command line, and then attach to the running instance in Eclipse's debugger. That shouldn't make a difference, should it?

  • Uncatchable AccesViolationException

    Hi all, I'm getting close to desperate.. I am developing a field service application for Windows Mobile 6.1 using C# and quite some p/Invoking. (I think I'm referencing about 50 native functions) On normal circumstances this goes without any problem, but when i start stressing the GC i'm getting a nasty 0xC0000005 error witch seems uncatchable. In my test i'm rapidly closing and opening a dialog form (the form did make use of native functions, but for testing i commented these out) and after a while the Windows Mobile error reporter comes around to tell me that there was an fatal error in my application. My code uses a try-catch around the Application.Run(masterForm); and hooks into the CurrentDomain.UnhandledException event, but the application still crashes. Even when i attach the debugger, visual studio just tells me "The remote connection to the device has been lost" when the exception occurs.. Since I didn't succeed to catch the exception in the managed environment, I tried to make sense out of the Error Reporter log file. But this doesn't make any sense, the only consistent this about the error is the application where it occurs in. The thread where the application occurs in is unknown to me, the module where the error occurs differs from time to time (I've seen my application.exe, WS2.dll, netcfagl3_5.dll and mscoree3_5.dll), even the error code is not always the same. (most of the time it's 0xC0000005, but i've also seen an 0X80000002 error, which is a warning accounting the first byte?) I tried debugging through bugtrap, but strangely enough this crashes with the same error code (0xC0000005). I tried to open the kdmp file with visual studio, but i can't seem to make any sense out of this because it only shows me disassembler code when i step into the error (unless i have the right .pbb files, which i don't). Same goes for WinDbg. To make a long story short: I frankly don't have a single clue where to look for this error, and I'm hoping some bright soul on stackoverflow does. I'm happy to provide some code but at this moment I don't know which piece to provide.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Before I start, I know there is another thread about this very issue (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2352874/moving-from-junior-developer-to-mid-level). I am in this very same situation, but of course every person and the company/employment-history is not the same. In my current company, I have not done one piece of coding from start to finish with the oversight of my manager and a Project Manager to manage the work/deadlines etc. I am basically an odd-jobs type of guy. The coding I do is on the side to whatever boring spreadsheet/word document I have to write. Very illogical that you're a coder and you're doing it in secret. In another job I had for 3 months (Was made redundant), it required 1 years experience, perhaps because of the fact I was the sole developer. It wasn't too hard, but then I was solely responsible and I learnt a lot from that. I had 2 other 3 months jobs (contracts), so I have been working for 1 year 9 months. I know found a job which I'm in the last stage for, which needs 3 years .NET experience and 2 years Sharepoint. How can I know if I am ready for this job? My current job has been going on for 1 year, but it doesn't mean squat apart from explaining how I have spent my time. It does not tell me what level I am at (apart from the huge skills gap I have opened up against my peers because I practise at home). So 1 year of doing nothing at work, but 1 year of doing loads at home. In fact, I take 1 week off and do more at home then in the company since I started. How can I know if I am ready for such a job? I am generally very confident given all I've achieved in coding, but I have no idea what a job with this sort of experience entails (what day-to-day-problems I would be facing). Is there any advice on how to handle this transition? Thanks

  • Oracle T4CPreparedStatement memory leaks?

    A little background on the application that I am gonna talk about in the next few lines: XYZ is a data masking workbench eclipse RCP application: You give it a source table column, and a target table column, it would apply a trasformation (encryption/shuffling/etc) and copy the row data from source table to target table. Now, when I mask n tables at a time, n threads are launched by this app. Here is the issue: I have run into a production issue on first roll out of the above said app. Unfortunately, I don't have any logs to get to the root. However, I tried to run this app in test region and do a stress test. When I collected .hprof files and ran 'em through an analyzer (yourKit), I noticed that objects of oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CPreparedStatement was retaining heap. The analysis also tells me that one of my classes is holding a reference to this preparedstatement object and thereby, n threads have n such objects. T4CPreparedStatement seemed to have character arrays: lastBoundChars and bindChars each of size char[300000]. So, I researched a bit (google!), obtained ojdbc6.jar and tried decompiling T4CPreparedStatement. I see that T4CPreparedStatement extends OraclePreparedStatement, which dynamically manages array size of lastBoundChars and bindChars. So, my questions here are: Have you ever run into an issue like this? Do you know the significance of lastBoundChars / bindChars? I am new to profiling, so do you think I am not doing it correct? (I also ran the hprofs through MAT - and this was the main identified issue - so, I don't really think I could be wrong?)     I'm writing a compiler that generates Jasmin code and want to invoke a method that takes a Class as a parameter. public class CTest { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { java.lang.reflect.Array.newInstance(CTest.class, 0); } } So in Jasmin, I think that should be: .class public CTest2 .super java/lang/Object .method public static main([Ljava/lang/String;)V .limit stack 2 .limit locals 1 ldc_w CTest2 iconst_0 invokestatic java/lang/reflect/Array/newInstance(Ljava/lang/Class;I)Ljava/lang/Object; pop return .end method When I assemble it and run it I get: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.VerifyError: (class: CTest2, method: main signature: ([Ljava/lang/String;)V) Illegal type in constant pool Looking at the disassembled code for both CTest.class (the Java version) and CTest2.class (the Jasmin version) with "javap -c -verbose" they both appear to set up the constant pool the same way: const #2 = class #16; // CTest const #16 = Asciz CTest; 0: ldc_w #2; //class CTest const #14 = Asciz CTest2; const #17 = class #14; // CTest2 0: ldc_w #17; //class CTest2 I've fixed two bugs in Jasmin already, but I can't see what it's doing wrong when putting the class in the constant pool for "ldc_w" it puts classes in the constant pool for other instructions, like "new" and "anewarray" correctly. I've tried looking at the .class files with TraceClassVisitor in ASM, but it doesn't dump the constant pool. Any ideas what I can try next?

    I ran into a problem today and a friend recommended I use a global static instance or more elegantly a singleton pattern. I spent a few hours reading about singletons but a few things still escape me. Background: What Im trying to accomplish is creating an instance of an API and use this one instance in all my classes (as opposed to making a new connection, etc). There seems to be about 100 ways of creating a singleton but with some help from yoda I found some thread safe examples. ..so given the following code: public sealed class Singleton { public static Singleton Instance { get; private set; } private Singleton() { APIClass api = new APIClass(); //Can this be done? } static Singleton() { Instance = new Singleton(); } } How/Where would you instantiate the this new class and how should it be called from a separate class? EDIT: I realize the Singleton class can be called with something like Singleton obj1 = Singleton.Instance(); but would I be able to access the methods within the APIs Class (ie. obj1.Start)? (not that I need to, just asking) EDIT #2: I might have been a bit premature in checking the answer but I do have one small thing that is still causing me problems. The API is launching just fine, unfortunately Im able to launch two instances?   • Error Log states that I have MySQL connect error, yet script runs fine

    Hello All, First, thanks for all the help I've received so far from StackOverflow. I've learned much. Once again, I'm posing a rudimentary question that I've searched on, but cannot find the exact answer to. Here or on PHP.net. It's sort of like what this guy asked, but not exactly: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/288603/mysql-throwing-query-error-yet-finishing-query-just-fine-why So, I saw my errorlog ballooning up when I checked my site directory and opened to notice that a bunch of errors have been recorded since I wrote this new Admin area. I know something is obviously awry with my scripting for the error to be thrown, but the weird thing is, the script actually runs through and pulls all the data I need without breaking. The log contains: PHP Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user 'someuser'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in /home/mysite/adminconsole.php on line 15 I don't get that because that very line is where I setup my connection... the exact same way I do it everywhere else on the site with no problem.   • How do you jump to a particular row in a DataGridView by typing (a la Windows Explorer details view)

    I have a .NET Winforms app in C# with a DataGridView that's read-only and populated with some number of rows. I'd like to have functionality similar to Windows Explorer's (and many other applications) details view for example. I'd like the DataGridView to behave such that when it has focus if you start typing, the current row selection will jump to the row where the (string) value of cell 0 (i.e. the first column in the row) starts with the characters you typed in. For example, if I have a DataGridView with 1 column and the following rows: Bob Jane Jason John Leroy Sam If the DataGridView has focus and I hit the 'b' key on my keyboard, the selected row is now "Bob". If I quickly type in the keys 'ja', the selected row is Jane. If I quickly type in the letters 'jas', the selected row is Jane. If I hit the 'z' key, nothing is selected (since nothing starts with Z). Likewise if Jane is currently selected and I keep typing the letter 'j', the selection will cycle through to Jason, then John, then back to Jane, each time I hit the 'j' key. I've been doing some Googling (and "stackoverflowing" :-)) for awhile and cannot find any examples of this type of functionality. I have a rough idea in my head to do this via some sort of short lived timer thread, collecting the keystrokes on KeyPress events for the DataGridView, and selecting rows based on those collected keystrokes matching a Cells[0].Value.StartsWith() type of condition. But it seems like there has to be an easier way that I'm just not seeing. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Linux 2.6.31 Scheduler and Multithreaded Jobs

    I run massively parallel scientific computing jobs on a shared Linux computer with 24 cores. Most of the time my jobs are capable of scaling to 24 cores when nothing else is running on this computer. However, it seems like when even one single-threaded job that isn't mine is running, my 24-thread jobs (which I set for high nice values) only manage to get ~1800% CPU (using Linux notation). Meanwhile, about 500% of the CPU cycles (again, using Linux notation) are idle. Can anyone explain this behavior and what I can do about it to get all of the 23 cores that aren't being used by someone else? Notes: In case it's relevant, I have observed this on slightly different kernel versions, though I can't remember which off the top of my head. The CPU architecture is x64. Is it at all possible that the fact that my 24-core jobs are 32-bit and the other jobs I'm competing w/ are 64-bit is relevant? Edit: One thing I just noticed is that going up to 30 threads seems to alleviate the problem to some degree. It gets me up to ~2100% CPU.

    I'm trying to create integration tests using hsqldb in an in memory mode. At the moment, I have to start the hsqldb server from the command line before running the unit tests. I would like to be able to be able to control the hsqldb server from my integration tests. I can't seem to get this to all work out though from code.   • Red5 Unable to Start Distribution.

    I have installed subclipse, Ant, IvyDE, Red5 Plugin for eclipse, All of the Environmental variables are set and the necessary elements have been added to the path. I am attempting to create a Red5 Distribution by using eclipse, opening Build.xml right clicking dist [default] in the outline window and running as and selecting Ant Builder. Eclipse says that the build is Successful. I first stop the Red5 Service, and then I attempt to run the build I create in eclipse it fails, below are the errors that display in the command prompt.   • Clojure agents consuming from a queue

    I'm trying to figure out the best way to use agents to consume items from a Message Queue (Amazon SQS). Right now I have a function (process-queue-item) that grabs an items from the queue, and processes it. I want to process these items concurrently, but I can't wrap my head around how to control the agents. Basically I want to keep all of the agents busy as much as possible without pulling to many items from the Queue and developing a backlog (I'll have this running on a couple of machines, so items need to be left in the queue until they are really needed). Can anyone give me some pointers on improving my implementation?   • How do I grant a site's applet an AllPermission privilege?

    I'd like to specify certain applets to run with java.security.AllPermission on my computer (for debugging and security testing). However, I don't want to enable all applets that I run to have this permission. So, editing my user Java policy file (which I have ensured is the correct policy file through testing), I try to put this value: grant codeBase "http://host_where_applet_lives/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; This value fails when the applet tries to do something powerful (create a new Thread, in my case). However, when I put the following value: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; The applet is able to perform the powerful operation. The only difference is the lack of a codeBase attribute. An answer to a similar question asked here [1] seemed to suggest (but never show or prove) that AccessController.doPrivileged() calls may be required. To me, this sounds wrong as I don't need that call when I grant the permissions to all applets (the second example I showed). Even if this is a solution, littering the applets I run with AccessController.doPrivileged() calls is not easy or necessarily possible. To top it off, my tests show that this just doesn't work anyway. But I'm happy to hear more ideas around it.   • Starting one BlackBerry screen from another.

    I've recently run into a snag while putting on the finishing touches for my BlackBerry app. I'm building a login screen which, if the user is successful in logging in, goes to a data loading screen, and then to a home screen. From the home screen, you can use the app. Everything works great but one thing, I can't seamlessly move from the login screen to the loading screen, to the home screen. I can move from the login screen to the loading screen ok, because I'm doing that via a button click which is on the GUI thread, but then I have the login screen at the bottom of the stack and can't get it out using the dismiss method. Once in the loading screen, I can't push the home screen because I'm not doing it via the gui method, though I'm able to update the GUI via the following piece of code: private void checkData(){ Timer loadingTimer = new Timer(); TimerTask loadingTask = new TimerTask() { public void run() { // set the progress bar progressGaugeField.setValue(DataManager.getDataLoaded()); // for repainting the screen invalidate(); } }; loadingTimer.scheduleAtFixedRate(loadingTask, 500, 500); } Does anyone know how to solve my problem of moving seamlessly from the login screen to the loading screen to the home screen?   • Android beginner: understanding MotionEvent actions

    I am having trouble getting my activity to return a MotionEvent.ACTION_UP. Probably a beginner's error. In LogCat, I'm only seeing the ACTION_MOVE event (which is an int value of 3). I also see the X/Y coordinates. No ACTION_DOWN and no ACTION_UP. I looked everywhere for a solution.     Hey all- I'm using ParallelPython to develop a performance-critical script. I'd like to share one value between the 8 processes running on the system. Please excuse the trivial example but this illustrates my question. def findMin(listOfElements): for el in listOfElements: if el < min: min = el import pp min = 0 myList = range(100000) job_server = pp.Server() f1 = job_server.submit(findMin, myList[0:25000]) f2 = job_server.submit(findMin, myList[25000:50000]) f3 = job_server.submit(findMin, myList[50000:75000]) f4 = job_server.submit(findMin, myList[75000:100000]) The pp docs don't seem to describe a way to share data across processes. Is it possible? If so, is there a standard locking mechanism (like in the threading module) to confirm that only one update is done at a time? l = Lock() if(el < min): l.acquire if(el < min): min = el l.release I understand I could keep a local min and compare the 4 in the main thread once returned, but by sharing the value I can do some better pruning of my BFS binary tree and potentially save a lot of loop iterations.     I cannot for the life of me figure out why I'm getting a NullPointerException. When a user clicks on a particular image, a dialog window is supposed to pop-up and display a larger version of said image: private OnClickListener coverListener = new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { showDialog(DIALOG_COVER); } }; DIALOG_COVER is set to = 0. Any help would be much appreciated.
