Deployment and monitoring tools for java/tomcat/linux environment

I'm a developer for many years, but don't have tons of experience in ops, so apology if this is a newbe question. In my company we run a web service written in Java mainly based on a Tomcat web server. We have two datacenters with about 10 hosts each. Hosts are of several types: Dababase, Tomcats, some offline java processes, memcached servers. All hosts are Linux CentOS Up until now, when releasing a new version to production we've been using a set of inhouse shell script that copy jars/wars and restart the tomcats. The company has gotten bigger so it has become more and more difficult operating all this and taking code from development, through QA, staging and to production. A typical release many times involves human errors that cost us precious uptime. Sometimes we need to revert to last known good and this isn't easy to say the least... We're looking for a tool, a framework, a solution that would provide the following: Supports the given list of technology (java, tomcat, linux etc) Provides easy deployment through different stages, including QA and production Provides configuration management. E.g. setting server properties (what's the connection URL of each host etc), server.xml or context configuration etc Monitoring. If we can get monitoring in the same package, that'll be nice. If not, then yet another tool we can use to monitor our servers. Preferably, open source with tons of documentation ;) Can anyone share their experience? Suggest a few tools? Thanks!

Partitioning of Ubuntu server which will use OpenVZ and encrypted partitions (unlocked through SSH l

Hi, I'm about to install a server. Some context: My HDD is 1 TB and I have 2 GB RAM Ubuntu Server Lucid Lynx AMD 64 I will use OpenVZ and have most functionality separated into containers. To support disk quotas I need to use ext3 (not ext4) for the container partition. Each time I reboot the server I want to be forced to login through SSH and mount the encrypted partitions by typing my password (if someone steals the server, no critical data should be available). I want to have as much as possible encrypted. Yet I want to be able to login through SSH as I don't have a monitor or keyboard at the server. I am not sure how big I need my partitions to be. Being able to resize them later would be nice. I guess it implies using LVM? But the manual partition mount using SSH is also very important (in fact it's more important, if I have to pick one). How do you recommend that I partition the HDD? If I have daemons which needs the encrypted partitions, will they fail and can I just restart them after mounting the needed partitions?

Same script, different behavior [migrated]

I just stumbled upon an interesting bug... Still trying to figure out what is exactly happening. Maybe you can help. First, the context. I'm currently building yet another man to html converter (for some reasons I won't motivate here, but I need it). So, have a look at the screenshot below (see the link), more precisely at the outlined spots. See? On the upper shell, I have &lt ; and &gt ;, that is, escaped html. While on the shell below I have < and directly. But as you can see (or do I seriously need looking glass ?), the command man 2 semget | webmanneris the same on both sides, as is the which webmanner. The two are executed roughly at the same moment, with no modification made to the script between. [Oops, cannot post pictures just yet... Here comes the link] http://aspyct.org/media/webmanner-bug.png But the shell below is older (open about 1 hour ago). Newer shells all print out &lt ;. So my first guess was that it somehow had a cached reference to the old inode of the file, or old blocks or whatever. So I modified parts of the script, at the start and then at the end, to print different messages. And, surprise, the message shown up on both terminals. But still, same difference between &lt ; and <. I'm confused... How to explain that behavior? I'm working on a OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) EDIT: OK, there is one big difference: the shell below uses ruby 1.9.3, while above is 1.8.7. Is there any known difference in string handling between the two versions ?

Web shortcuts (.url) not working on Windows 7

I'm experiencing several symptoms, but I believe they are all related to web link files not working. First, I can't create we link files anymore. When I try New Shortcut and put an URL, I get the following error message: Second, existent shortcuts are not working. The default context menu action (or double-click) is Print, which simply prints an empty page. If I try to see its properties, there's no URL there. Third, IE bookmarks are also not working. One difference is that the default action is Open, IE does nothing when I click it. Adding a new bookmark only creates one more dead link file. I'm almost sure this problem occurred after I tried to install IE 7 on Windows 7. Unfortunately, it didn't work because the OS seems to be bound to IE 8. I already tried to reinstall/repair IE 8, but it made no difference. Does anyone experienced a similar problem? I need a working solution, but I welcome any reasonable suggestion.

Receiving and processing SMS messages through a script?

I am attempting to setup a system to receive and process SMS messages automatically. The system is intended for use in a context (an unfunded migrant workers' union in India) where both finances and sysadmin skills are extremely constrained (I would be the only person, in the near future, who would be administering the system). The intention is to make some functions - registration of members, generation of ID cards, communication of alerts and other information - easier. However, for receiving and sending SMS, I have not been able to find any email to SMS or other kind of gateway that functions in India. Perhaps there is one (edit: apparently Clickatell does have an India service, but the prices appear astronomical). If not, can one rely on a USB mobile modem (such as those provided by many mobile providers in India)? It seems like, with utilities such as gammu or bitpim, SMS operations on such a modem could be scripted. Is this actually feasible, though? Non-restored Files Corrupted on System Restore

I restored OSX 10.6.2 today (was 10.6.3 and not booting) by copying the system over from a backup. The data directories were not touched. In the data directories, I'm seeing some files as 0 bytes, and getting permission-denied errors when copying, even when using sudo cp or the Finder itself. Some programs, differently, take the files at face value and see no permission problems (such as zip), but they see the files as zero bytes, which would be game-over for recovery. cp: .git/objects/fe/86b676974a44aa7f128a55bf27670f4a1073ca: could not copy extended attributes to /eraseme/blah/.git/objects/fe/86b676974a44aa7f128a55bf27670f4a1073ca: Operation not permitted I have tried sudo chown, sudo chmod -R 777 and sudo chflags -R nouchg which do not change the end result. Strangely, this is only affecting my .git directories (perhaps because they start with a period, but renaming them -- which works -- does not change anything). What else can I do to take ownership of these files? Edit: This question comes from StackOverflow because I originally thought it was a GIT problem. It's definitely not (just) GIT. Anyway, this is to help put some of the comments in context.

How to run a restricted set of programs with Administrator privileges without giving up Admin acces (Win7 Pro)

I have a shared system, running Windows7 X64, restricted to a 'standard user' with no password. Not everyone who has access to the system has the administrator password. This works rather well, except for some applications - specially the unlock-applications for encrypted hard drives/USB flash drives. The specific ones either require Administrator access (eg. Seagate Blackarmor) or simply fail without it -- since these programs are sending raw commands to a device, this is to be expected. I would like to be able to add the hashes of these particular programs to a whitelist, and have them run as administrator without needing any prompts. Since these are by definition on removable media, I can't simply use a filename or even a path. One of the users who shares the system can be considered 'crafty', so anything which temporarily grants administrator rights to an user account is certain to cause problems. What i'd like to be able to do: 1) Create an admin account that can only run programs from a whitelist (or, failing that, from a directory) I can't find a good way to do this: As far as I can tell, SRP applies equally to ALL users? Even if I put a "Deny" token on all directories on the system, such that new directories would inherit it, it could still potentially run things from the mounted USB devices. I also don't know whether it's possible to create a new directory that DOESN'T inherit from the parent, that would lake the deny token, and provide admin access. 2) Find a lightweight service that will run these programs in its local context Windows7 seems to block cross-privilege level communication by default, and I haven't found such for windows 7. One example seems to be "sudo" (http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~nfriess/sudo/) but because it uses a WLNOTIFY hook, it won't work under Vista nor Windows7 Non-Solutions: - RunAs: Requires administrator password! (but everyone calls it "sudo" anyway) - SuRun: From Google: "Surun uses its own Windows service that adds the user to the group of administrators during program start and removes him automatically from that group again"

Determine which user initiated call in Asterisk

I had the following code in my extensions.conf file: [local] exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=${OUTGOING_NAME}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Set(CALLERID(num)=${OUTGOING_NUMBER}) Now I want to change this code to set the CallerID and number based on the user/extension that is making the call. In fact I have four(4) users/extensions in my sip.conf and only one of them (the one I use for business) is supposed to send a different caller id/number. Everything is in the same context (for simplicity) since all lines need to be able to pick up an incoming call. The only difference is when line1 needs to make a call, it has to send a different caller id/number and use a different provider. Can I use Upstart to start a script which requires the user's X session?

I wrote a script which greps through the output of synclient to determine whether a laptop's touchpad has miraculously turned itself off (Ubuntu seems to /love/ doing this recently) and, if so, turns it back on. The script is something like this: #!/bin/bash while true ; do if [ `synclient | grep -e"TouchpadOff[\s]*1" | wc -l` -ge 1 ] ; then synclient TouchpadOff=0 fi sleep(3) done (I don't have the laptop to hand right now but you get the point! I will update later when I'm at my laptop if that's incorrect) So I tried running this as an upstart script so my touchpad can heal itself without any interaction. But it seems synclient doesn't find the current user's X session when my script is upstart'ed. I tried running it by using something like su -c myscript.sh ledneb in my script stanza, but to no avail. Should I be looking in the direction of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc rather than upstart? Is there a proper way to have this script run in the context of the current (or even a hard-coded) user's x session?

Make call with alternate provider if NOANSWER

I have two voip providers, one free an the other paid. The free provider only allows local calls to certain area codes, so I need to fall back to the the paid provider if a call fails. At the moment, I have the following context in my extensions.conf file: [globals] ; freephoneline.ca PRIMARY_PROVIDER=fpl ; voip.ms SECONDARY_PROVIDER=voipms [local] exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=${OUTGOING_NAME}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@${PRIMARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Set(CALLERID(num)=${OUTGOING_NUMBER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/1${EXTEN}@${SECONDARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Hangup() I checked the logs and noticed that the free provider responds with NOANSWER if a call is not allowed (Even though it plays a message). What I want is to: Try calling the ${PRIMARY_PROVIDER} first. If NOANSWER is returned by provider (not that the callee did not answer), then call with ${SECONDARY_PROVIDER} How can I modify my dial plan to get the desired results? EDIT : The primary provider is freephoneline.ca, and I'm using asterisk v1.8.2.3-2

I encountered the expression "..." when looking at the installation instructions for http://code.google.com/p/vim-win3264/wiki/Win64Binaries and it says the following (note bolded text): Unzip the zipfile into a directory whose name ends in vim, such as C:\Program Files\Vim, D:\vim, or C:\mytools\vim. This will create a vim72 subdirectory, containing all the files. Start a cmd.exe window, cd ...\vim\vim72, then run install.exe, the command-line installer. This will offer you a series of choices. You can probably just type d to "do it".` Bonus points for listing all relative directory pathnames!

Git workflow for two tight-knit projects

Two very similar projects I'm maintaining an online Markdown editor using Git as RCS (and accessorily made available on GitHub). From this web app, I've created a Chrome app: the code is the same, aside from some Chrome technicalities. I care about open sourcing these two projects. Still, the Chrome app's code being the same as the web app's except for some dull details, I've first chosen to (1) not publish the Chrome app on GitHub, and (2) not use Git to manage its code. Instead, I would manually review the web app's commits, then replicate the few changes in the Chrome app. … slightly drifting apart However, I've decided to add a feature to the Chrome app only. So, even though both codebases will remain broadly similar, they'll be diverging enough to make me reconsider the rationale behind my initial decision to not version control nor share the Chrome app's source code. Since I'm now willing to use Git to version control both apps, and that I want to share both of them on GitHub, how should I go about it? Should I use two different repositories, or one repo with two long-running branches? What would be the pros and cons of each approach in that context? What would be the easiest/fastest way to regularly "import" commits from the web app to the Chrome app, since the web app is going to remain the master branch? Is cherry-picking the only solution?

Problem with cometd and jetty 6 / 7

Hi chaps, I'm trying to get started with cometd (http://cometd.org/) and jetty 6 or 7, but I seem to be having problems. I've got an ant script that packages my code up into a war with the cometd 1.1.1 binaries and jetty binaries that are appropriate to the version of jetty I deploy the war to (so 7.1.2.v20100523 binaries when I deploy to jetty 7.1.2.v20100523 and 6.1.24 when I deploy to 6.1.24). Bundler isn't loading gems

I have been having a problem with using Bundler and being able to access my gems without having to require them somewhere, as config.gem used to do that for me (as far as I know). same goes for any other gem. Does Bundler not include gems like the old Rails 2.0 did? Or is something messed up with my system? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

half or quarter black screen in android

I have an android activity that when I launch sometimes (about 1 in 4 times) it only draws quarter or half the screen before showing it. When I change the orientation or press a button the screen draws properly. I'm just using TextViews, Buttons, Fonts - no drawing or anything like that. All of my code for initialising is in the onCreate(). In this method I'm loading a text file, of about 40 lines long, and also getting a shared preference. Could this cause a delay so that it can't draw the intent? Thanks in advance if anyone has seen anything similar. EDIT - I tried commenting out the loading of the word list, but it didn't fix the problem. Android Remote Service Keeps Restarting

Ok so I've built an app that uses a remote service to do some real time GPS tracking. I am using the below code to start and bind to the service. The remote service uses aidl, sets up a notification icon, runs the GPS and locationListener. In onLocationChanged, a handler sends data back to the caller via the callback. Pretty much straight out of the examples and resources online. I want to allow the service to continue running even if the app closes. When the app is restarted, I want the app to again bind to the service (using the existing service if running) and again receive data from the tracker. I currently have the app mode set to singleTask and cannot use singleinstance due to another issue. My problem is that quit often even after the app and service are shut down either from the app itself, or from AdvancedTaskKiller, or a Forceclose, the service will restart and initialize the GPS. touching on the notification will open the app. I again stop the tracking which removes the notification and turns off the GPS Close the app, and again after a few seconds the service restarts. The only way to stop it is to power off the phone. What can I do to stop this from happening. Does it have to do with the mode of operation? START_NOT_STICKY or START_REDELIVER_INTENT? Or do I need to use stopSelf()? My understanding is that if the service is not running when I use bindService() that the service will be created...so do I really need to use start/stopService also? I thought I would need to use it if I want the service to run even after the app is closed. That is why i do not unbind/stop the service in onDestroy(). Is this correct? I've not seen any other info an this, so I,m not sure where to look. Please Help! Mercurial to Mercurial to Subversion Workflow Problem

We're migrating from Subversion to Mercurial. To facilitate the migration, we're creating an intermediate Mercurial repository that is a clone of our Subversion repository. All developers will be begin switching over to the Mercurial repository, and we'll periodically push changes from the intermediate Mercurial repository to the existing Subversion repository. After a period of time, we'll simply obsolete the Subversion repository and the intermediate Mercurial repository will become the new system of record. Dev 1 Local --+--> Mercurial --+--> Subversion Dev 2 Local --+ + Dev 3 Local --+ + Dev 4 -------------------------+ I've been testing this out, but I keep running into a problem when I push changes from my local repository, to the intermediate Mercurial repository, and then up into our Subversion repository. On my local machine, I have a changeset that is committed and ready to be pushed to our intermediate Mercurial repository. Here you can see it is revision #2263 with hash 625... I push only this changeset to the remote repository. So far, everything looks good. The changeset has been pushed. hg update 1 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved I now switch over to the remote repository, and update the working directory. hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes [r3834] bmurphy: database namespace pulled 1 revisions saving bundle to /srv/hg/repository/.hg/strip-backup/62539f8df3b2-temp adding branch adding changesets adding manifests adding file changes added 1 changesets with 1 changes to 1 files rebase completed Next, I push the change up to Subversion, works great. At this point, the change is in the Subversion repository and I return attention back to my local client. I pull changes to my local machine. Huh? I've now got two changesets. My original changeset appears as a local branch now. The other changeset has a new revision number 2264, and a new hash 10c1... Anyway, I update my local repo to the new revision. I'm now switched over. So, I finally click the "determine and mark outgoing changesets" and as you can see Mercurial still wants to push out my previous changesets even though they've already been pushed. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. I also can't merge the two revisions. If I merge the two revisions on my local machine, I end up with a "merge" commit. When I push that merge commit out to the intermediate Mercurial repository, I can no longer push changes out to our Subversion repository. I end up with the following problem: hg update 0 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes abort: Sorry, can't find svn parent of a merge revision. and I have to rollback the merge to get back to a working state. What am I missing?

Picker view wont rotate- iPhone

hi, I am making a booking page. I have included 3 pickers in it. I have included all the delegates required for the pickers to work but it wont rotate. Replacing UISplitViewController. New version isn't added for current orientation, frame size

My application has two different modes I am switching between by replacing the two views in a UISplitViewController. This involves instantiating the new views and a new UISplitViewController. I then set the new detail view as the UISplitViewController's delegate. I'm running into an issue where when I replace the view controllers and splitview controller, they are not properly sized or added for the current orientation. For instance, if I have my iPad in UIDeviceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown the view will be upside down when I call addSubview, but will rotate to the proper orientation after a second. In another instance, if I have the device in landscape mode and swap the views, the detail view controller is not fully stretched to the size of the view. If I rotate the device to portrait and back to landscape, its resized properly. How to debug nondeterministic access violation crash?

Our C#/COM/C++ application is crashing and I need help debugging it. Running with gflags enabled and WinDbg attached, we determined the crashes are caused by an access violation, but we haven't been able to narrow it down any more than that. We are not seeing the issue on all machines; there are a couple of machines that seem to reproduce the issue frequently but not deterministically. We have observed the application crash from simply switching away from the application (say, Alt-Tab) and then back. Output from WinDbg is below. We have been trying to systematically comment out areas of code that could be causing the problem, but we haven't had much success yet. How do you Send More that 20 Parameters to a Stored Procedure Using ODP.Net?

Switching from Microsofts Oracle Driver to ODP.NET version 10.2.0.100. After changing the data types to OracleDBTypes in a procedure, that worked perficetly using System.Data.OracleClient, the procedure fails if we try and pass in more that 20 parameters. The error returned is: ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'ADD_TARP_EVENT' ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PL/SQL: Statement ignorede If we reduce the number of parameters to less than 20 it works. Is this a known issue?
