• DBan not working because disk has bad sectors? [migrated]

  Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message. "DBAN finished with non-fatal errors This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors" Have tried multiple flags such as noverify to force it to skip this check (it doesn't show bad sectors in the OS scan in windows). but the error always comes back. This is the only time that I've seen this message, as every other of the few drives I've used this software on usually take 3-5 hours to do their job.

• innodb recovery from .ibd files

  My website has crashed a few days ago. The hosting company says some innodb database crashed. They sent a MySql data folder. I tried to restore the database, but phpmyadmin is only showing MyISAM tables. I checked the database with navicat. When I click innodb table, I got this error table 'xyz.wp_posts' doesn't exist. is there anyway to fix this on windows? • If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via WiFi (~150-300Mbps), where is the 1-10Gbps wired streaming?

  Facts: It is surprising and uncharacteristic that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. 150-300mbps WiFi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps+ LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Throughout time, (since the internet was created) wired services have **always come first yet in this particular case, the opposite seems to be true. We had wired internet first, wired audio streaming, and wired video streaming all before their wireless counterparts. Why? Largely because the wireless bandwidth was and is inferior. Even today despite being significantly better and capable of a lot more, it is still inferior to a wired connection. Situation: Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable to me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. While this secondary project will provide a wired connection, it still shouldn't be necessary to purchase a Shield to have this benefit. Not only this but Intel's WiDi claims game streaming support as well - wirelessly. Where is the wired streaming? All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I should be able to stream to my second desktop or my laptop both of which by hardware comparison are superior to the Shield. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? Reiteration of questions: Is there a technical reason (non marketing) for why Nvidia opted to bottleneck the streaming service with a wireless connection limiting the resolution to 720p and introducing intermittent video choppiness when on a wired connection one could achieve, presumably, 1080p with significantly less or zero choppiness? Is there anything limiting developers from creating a PC/Desktop application emulating the same H.264 decoding functionality that circumvents the need to get an Nvidia Shield altogether? (It is not a matter of being too cheap to support Nvidia - I have many Nvidia cards that aren't being used. One should not have to purchase specialty hardware when = hardware already exists) Same questions go for Intel Widi also. I am just utterly perplexed that there are wireless live streaming solution and yet no wired. How on earth can wireless be the goto transmission medium? Is there another solution that takes advantage of H.264 video compression allowing live streaming over a wired connection? (*) - Perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package. (**) - I cant back that up with hard evidence/links but someone probably could. Edit: Maybe this will be the solution I am looking for but I still find it hard to believe that they would be the first and after wireless solutions already exist.   I have a non-daemon server app that my windows 2003 server needs to run all the time. The problem is, every time the server restarts, be it electricity or windows update, someone needs to press ctrl alt del and enter username/password. Then the program starts, as it's in startup. How do I make windows 2003 to automatically log in to administrator or spawn a terminal services session every time the system boots? I know it's against the nature of servers and all. But this is the only thing the server does.

• Do the amount of CUDA cores matter for Sony Vegas

  I am building a new PC, and I am wondering if I am making the right choices. The PC will mainly be used for video editing, and mainly in Sony Vegas. Now I have the choice of going with a video that that has more of less CUDO cores. To be precise I am choosing between a Ti and non-Ti version of an nVidea video card. Now I have read that sony vegas can partially use the CUDA cores to it's benefit, but not that much, and only if you use GPU acceleration. On the other hand I have heard it's better to leave GPU acceleration off as it will effect the quality of the output. Making it so that the CUDA cores actually don't make much of a difference after all.

• Glitch with updated nvidia drivers for Dual Monitor

  Same problem already happened once so I rolled back to the latest non-problematic version, but it's been months now and I thought to try gain. Still the same problem, so now I thought to ask for help rather than rollback to this, now very old, version. Currently I use 266.58 version drivers for Windows 7 x64 and GeForce GTX 275. (Downloaded from the nvidia website) I have two monitors, Samsung SyncMaster 223BW (LCD) is primary and LG F900B (CRT, old but still works) is secondary. The problem: when I turn off the monitors (both or just secondary) all of the windows that were on the secondary monitor get moved to the primary. This also occurs when I use Sleep. Again, in the old drivers this didnt happen, but now it does and is very annoying, requiring me to manually move the windows back to the secondary monitor (which I use for most of the windows). I had no luck searching for this on google, but maybe somebody here will have a useful suggestion.

• Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

  I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. Things that might help: I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

• Multiple Schedule/Task Views (devs, customer, etc) in MS Project (or other)

  Is there a way to configure multiple views/filters in MS Project for the same set of tasks? I want to have a view that is configured for customer's only, for example. So, it would have large milestone tasks only, and hide all of the details that are there for the benefit of the team members. If MS Project doesn't do this, is there any project management software that does? A free/open source version would be preferable. Edit: Apparently, "filter" was the word I needed in my Google searches. I found how to mark a task as a Milestone and use the pre-made Milestone filter. However, that still doesn't hide non-Milestone tasks the way I want it to. I haven't figured out how to make a true custom filter.

• Network / Internet diagnostic tool to locate an error?

  Hi, I’m facing some difficulties with the Internet / network at my work and I have trouble locating the precise error and when and how it occurs. The problem is that the client machines in the house sporadic is disconnected to the Internet. I’m some what new so I haven’t that much inside in the network and apparently neither has my predecessor. What I am requesting and hoping you guys knows about is, if there exist some kind of network monitor tool I can install and run and it will periodically check the network, the Internet connection etc. and record to logs. Then, if there suddenly arises a problem some time of the day in some part of the network or the Internet connection, I can check it perhaps the next day. I’ve just downloaded and installed Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 application and hopeful it can give me some answers on where the instability is located but I still would like a tool to make different checks and test in some time interval. Do anyone know about such a program or another kind of performance / diagnostic tool / method I can use? Sincere Jesper

• Configure Mouse Buttons for "Administrator"/Elevated privileges

  I am, for better or worse, an administrator on my Windows 7 machine. However, even then, I still need to run certain programs "as Administrator" - for example, Visual Studio 2008 when working with local IIS sites. I also like to have the extra buttons on my IntelliMouse Optical doing non-standard things, like representing Ctrl and Shift. However, when in VS running as administrator, these settings aren't picked up, just like my mapped drives aren't picked up - I would understand this if I was logging in as a different user, supplying credentials, etc, but I'm not, I'm just pressing "Yes" at the UAC prompt. Normally, I'd just right click the item in the start menu and select "Run as administrator", but that's not an option on the context menu for either the Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse application that appears under "Programs", nor the "Mouse" control panel item. Running the control panel as administrator also doesn't seem to help. So has any one got any suggestions on how I can configure my mouse buttons for the elevated version of me that Visual Studio is running as?

• OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • OS X Lion: Emptying the trash takes "forever": is using rm -r safe?

  Emptying my Trash in OS X Lion (non securely) is taking about three hours (about 1.5 million files, from a Time Machine backup). I had to stop the process a few times already, because I could not move my laptop with the external harddrive the files are on. This is also a problem because the Trash emptying is restarted from the very beginning each time I empty the Trash again (i.e., files are not deleted when the Trash emptying is aborted). I read that it is faster to use rm -rf on ~/.Trash, in this case. However, is this safe? (I am afraid that does OS X Lion performs tasks behind the scenes—which would explain its slowness—that rm -r does not, which could lead to problems in the future.)

  My setup is a linux box with 1 partition used thought LVM - has been working for years. I add a freeze and after the reboot the partition cannot be mounted: mount -r -t ext3 /dev/pve/data /mnt/pve-data mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/pve-data, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so However fsck doesn't see any problem with it: fsck.ext3 -fp /dev/pve/data /dev/pve/data: 3024076/60366848 files (0.6% non-contiguous), 156921642/241435648 blocks There's nothing in dmegs nor the syslog. • How do I delete the Windows Explorer address bar history

  Note: I am NOT referring to Internet Explorer. I am using Windows XP and Windows Server 2008 and need to delete the history values from the file browser (aka Windows Explorer). Somebody put a password into the address bar as ftp://user:pass, and now I can't delete the value. Some forums say to delete this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths In Windows XP, the key doesn't exist, and in Windows Server 2008, the key is there, but deleting it doesn't seem to help. Any help?

• Problems starting MySQL on Mac OS X

  I am not able to start MySQL server on Mac OS X 10.4.11. MySQL was installed using Macports. MySQL was running fine until it suddenly died without any obvious reason. When running "mysql", I get the error message: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) If I try to start MySQL manually, I get the following error message: sudo /opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server start Starting MySQL/opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server: line 159: kill: (636) - No such process ERROR! In /etc/mysql/my.cnf I have: socket = __PREFIX/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock But the path "opt/local/var/run/mysqld/" does not exist on my system. I tried to change the socket path to "__PREFIX/var/run/mysql5/ mysqld.sock" (which is where the socket is located). Unfortunately, this did not help either. Owner and Permissions for /opt/local/var/run/mysql5/ are correctly set. Any suggestions on how to start MySQL again? Thanks for your advice.

• How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • Can you swap dpi buttons on the Astra Dragon War mouse with 4th and 5th buttons?

  I'm left-handed and I'm in need of a good computer mouse with at least five buttons. However, most computer mice on the market are sadly right-handed and very impracticable to use with the extra buttons on my pinkie side instead of on my thumb side. The Dragon War Astra has two buttons on both sides. Buttons 4 and 5 on the left side and the dpi-buttons on the right side. If I were just able to re-assign them so they swap positions I'd have a great left-handed mouse. Sadly, the program X-Mouse Button Control doesn't allow the user to re-assign dpi buttons. My question is whether there exist other methods to still get it to work for me (third party programs, perhaps?). Or should I get another gaming mouse?

  Features that I would ideally include in "HTPC-optimized": Full-screen. Navigable using a remote or the keyboard arrows. Legible at couch distances. Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser. Opera on a Wii meets most of these criteria but not being HD wastes a lot of potential. If a single solution doesn't exist, is there some combination of Firefox add-ons that will get me there?

• Software available for singing "lessons" via computer microphone?

  Looking for a software to help my friend learn to sing. Can't seem to find anything on googles. Does there exist software (preferably downloadable and from this century!) that records one's voice and then analyzes it to see how "accurate" it was. It would be great if it also had some kind of "lessons" of some sort, and not simply sound recorder that shows waveforms. I can't imagine it would be so hard to implement, and there probably is one out there - I just can't find it. Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

• How to start vim without executing /etc/vimrc?

  On my Linux server at work, the admins did not install cscope, and I installed it from source in my home directory and added it to the $PATH. The trouble is, the /etc/vimrc has a reference to /usr/bin/cscope which does not exist and everytime I start vim, it complains about that and I have to press for that message to go away. It is interesting that if I remove cscope from my $PATH, I don't get that behavior - so it is possible that vim is testing that cscope exists somewhere, and only then executing the cscope configuration - but then it gets it wrong! So my question is: can I set something up in my .vimrc so it does not source the global /etc/vimrc? I don't want to move cscope out of PATH, as I don't want to type the full directory name every time I run it from the command line.

• Setting up fail2ban to ban failed phpMyAdmin login attempts

  We've been using fail2ban to block failed ssh attempts. I would like to setup the same thing for phpMyAdmin as well. As phpMyAdmin doesn't log authentication attempts to a file (that I know of), I'm unsure of how best to go about this. Does a plugin / config exist that makes phpMyAdmin log authentication attempts to a file? Or is there some other place I should look for such an activity log? Ideally I will be able to find a solution that involved modifying fail2ban config only, as I have to configure fail2ban with the same options on multiple servers, and would prefer not to also modify the various phpMyAdmin installations on said servers.

There are a range of HP-UX 11.11 hosts I'm unable to install rsync (I'm limited to a non-privileged user) I've extracted both rsync binary and libpopt.sl, libiconv.sl, libintl.sl from the depots into one of that user's directories: /home/zenith/rsync/ Problem is, I can't get my RH Linux box communicating with it: rsync -e --rsync-path=/home/zenith/rsync/rsync --compress=9 -pgtov --filter=+rs_/'*.log' --exclude='*' [email protected]:/home/zenith/service/logs/ /u01/rsync_depot/service/192.102.14.18/ /usr/lib/dld.sl: Can't find path for shared library: libintl.sl /usr/lib/dld.sl: No such file or directory sh: 1644 Abort(coredump) I've added to the remote host .profile export SHLIB_PATH=/usr/lib:/home/zenith/rsync export PATH=$PATH:/home/zenith/rsync but still, no libintl.sl is found. How can I initialize the correct env variable/ get this to work?

• How to Recover HDD Formatted by "Create a Recovery Drive" Tool of Windows 8.1?

  I have 2 TB USB HDD which had these drives F: about 1 TB with 750 GB data H: about 120 GB with 60 GB data I: about 780 GB with 250 GB data (For TV: It was raw in Windows but visible in the Smart TV) I took 521 MB from last part of H to get new G drive. Then I run "Create a Recovery Drive" tool of Windows 8.1 and chose G drive. It said all data in the drive will be deleted. I thought it is just G drive but it deleted my whole HDD. It created 32 GB new F drive with writing 337 MB on it and rest of HDD is unallocated. I tried these programs to get my first 3 drives but non of them helped for getting 1st partition. TestDisk MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition EaseUS Partition Master 9.2.2 (I deleted new F drive volume because it scans only unallocated part) Recuva PC Inspector File Recovery
