  • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   • What should I do to make sure that IIS does not recycle my application?

    I have a WCF service app hosted in IIS. On startup, it goes and fetches a really expensive (in terms of time and cpu) resource to use as local cache. Unfortunately, IIS seems to recycle the process on a fairly regular basis. So I am trying to change the settings on the Application Pool to make sure that IIS does not recycle the application. So far, I've change the following: Limit Interval under CPU from 5 to 0. Idle Time-out under Process Model from 20 to 0. Regular Time Interval under Recycling from 1740 to 0. Will this be enough? And I have specific questions about the items I changed: What specifically does Limit Interval setting under CPU mean? Does it mean that if a certain CPU usage is exceeded, the application pool will be recycled? What exactly does "recycled" mean? Is the application completely torn down and started up again? What is the difference between "Worker Process shutdown" and "Application Pool recycling"? The documentation for the Idle Time-out under Process Model talks about shutting down the worker process. While the docs for Regular Time Interval under Recycling talk about application pool recycling. I don't quite grok the difference between the two. I thought the w3wp.exe is the worker process which runs the application pool. Can someone explain the difference to the application between the two? The reason for having IIS7 and IIS7.5 tags is because the app will run in both and hope the answers are the same between the versions. Image for reference:

  • AWS forwarding email to a gmail account

    So I registered a domain name. I then set up a static webpage using aws (S3 and Rout53). Now what I want to do is forward any email I get from that custom domain name to a personal email address I have set up. I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I have these record sets already: A NS SOA CNAME I believe I have to set up an MX record but not sure how. say I have the custom domain [email protected] and I want to redirect all email to [email protected]. The personal email account is a gmail (google accounts) email address. Thanks.

I'm looking for the "program" (what I would type at a command prompt? these are still just Sys32 programs in the PATH, aren't they?) that, I imagine, would take arguments, to change Sound/Volume settings under Windows 7. Perhaps, for clarification, something that might take the form "C: SetVolume -slevel 50" or something.

    I'm currently trying to use typeperf to access some Windows performance counters. Unfortunately, a few of the instances I'm trying to check are of the format service#1. The command typeperf "\\server\Process(service#1)\Working Set Peak" is unfortunately returning the data for \\server\Process(service)\Working Set Peak rather than the data for the instance service#1. This holds true for any of the services that have pound signs in the counter string. Does anyone know of a method to get around this problem?   • Windows service runs file locally but not on server

    I created a simple Windows service in dot net which runs a file. When I run the service locally I see the file running in the task manager just fine. However, when I run the service on the server it won't run the file. I've checked the path to the file which is fine. I also checked the permissions on the folder and file, and they fine as well. Also there are no exceptions happening. Below is the code used to launch the process which runs the file. I posted this first on stack overflow, and some people were thinking this is a config issue, so I moved it here.     I usually checking my personal gmail account account at work, and I have another gmail account for work/professional purpose. Now I am starting to see more sites using OpenID. The problem I am facing is that I want to check my gmail from firefox, but I want to use my work google account to login with OpenID website. Is there an easy to do so? Of course one way is to logout my personal account, login my work account, OpenID login to those sites. Second way is to use another browser for my personal gmail and firefox for work, but are there a better way because I hate using two browsers at the same time?

  • Apache crashes a few seconds after the start.

    Hi, i've got a problem with apache. When i try to start it (/etc/init.d/apache2 start) it dies after a few seconds. It shows up on "ps aux" consuming a lot of memory and then dies.   • Using WebDAV for automated downloads

    I currently manage a number of sites (at one point about a dozen, currently four, but soon growing into the dozens or hundreds) that serve a piece of software to clients at their remote locations. Our web server is Windows SBS Server 2k3, and the remote servers are Windows Server 2k3.When we have new versions of the software, I upload this new software to a specific directory and rename it; each time the clients boot, they pull their software from that specific directory. With just a few sites, it's no problem for me to RDP in and copy the files over. As the number grows, this will quickly become quite unwieldy. So I'm thinking that WebDAV would be part of a solution, so that I could simply push the newest version to our server (Windows SBS Server 2003) and make it available to the sites to grab. However, on the remote server side, what are some suggestions for automating the download? I only want the servers to download the files during downtime (between 3 AM and 9 AM), and I only want them to download if there is a new version available. I had thought of writing a program that checked the files on the WebDAV server at a regular interval, compared a hash of the current software to a hash of the software on the server, and only downloaded if they were different, but I'm wondering if there is something I am unaware of that can automate the process.

  • Multiple Devices connecting to VPN on CentOS server

    I am looking for a solution as to what would be the VPN software for multiple OSes and Devices. I currently have 15 systems to connect to a VPN. I was using Hamachi from LogMeIn but their lack of Android support really upsets me, and their limited support for Linux OSes is also a let down. 90% of my systems are Ubuntu 11+ systems, only 2 are Windows XP. But I also have a few people, maybe 3 that need to connect to it from Android devices. This is where Hamachi has let me down and I want to move to my own VPN solution. The server would be a simple VPS running CentOS. So I need some VPN software that allows connection of those to a Linux based server. I wanted to go with OpenVPN, but I am under the opinion that in any OS you have to have their software to connect to the VPN. Ubuntu supports VPN's out of the gate, but OpenVPN requires extra software to be installed, I don't want this if I can help it. Same with Windows and same with Android. Plus android mostly requires rooted devices for OpenVPN, at least from what I've read. I was looking at maybe L2TP, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get Ubu systems connected with it as I haven't found much on the subject, let alone Window's XP machines. I know Android connects out of the gate to it. I don't know much about L2TP but I know it's a pain to get running in CentOS from what I have read. Now the last option is some sort of software for PPTP but I've never read anything on it and don't know if all systems are compatible with it. What would be your solution to these devices and multiple OSes? OpenVPN seems to be my heading I just don't like it that it always requires software to run and rooted Android Devices. Any solutions for this and install solutions? Maybe a different OS for the server like Ubuntu would make another type of VPN easier?

  • What could cause an 101 Error in WAMP under Windows 7 ?

    Hey, I'be been using WAMP for local development for quite a while now but lately I've been getting an Error 101 message when I browse localhost sites. It's possible for this to have appeared after the last WAMP update but I'm not 100% sure on this. If I try again and again, after several page refreshes it works but it's really annoying! The exact error message is: Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error. This is my configuration: OS: Windows 7 Apache: 2.2.11 PHP: 5.2.9-2 WAMP: 2.0 Also the local scripts connect to a remote MySQL server, they don't use the local MySQL(I don't know if it matters, just though I let you know). I've been looking into the apache logs and I've found the following.     We have an IIS 7.5 web service on Windows Server 2008 that handles WCF requests from C# clients. This service is configured to have Maximum Worker Processes = 1, so it is not a web garden. IIS is setup to recycle itself at the same time every day (3 AM). I am trying to debug gnarly connection issues, so I wanted to be sure the application pool was not recycling itself. I configured the pool to log an event when it recycles itself. To my surprise, I see the following entries in the System event log: Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 3:00:00 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '6636' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 2:59:39 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '9364' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. IIS is correctly recycling the application pool at 3 AM. However, I do not understand why I would be getting two recycle events in the log within a few seconds of each other. The maximum number of processes is 1. Does IIS sometimes allocate multiple processes for an application pool that is specified as having 1 process? -- edit -- I connected at about 4 PM today and only saw 1 w3wp.exe process. There are no other event log entries that would indicate a crash.

    I am using username secret to add users with encrypted passwords to our switches and firewall. I have been battling with the same switches and firewall for a couple of hours trying to get securely generated hard passwords for all admins. Sometimes, the passwords would go into config, but wouldn't work for login. According to the documentation for enable secret a password must not begin with a number and ? has to be entered as Ctrl-V then ? to escape it. I followed that and still got passwords I could not use sometimes. There was no error when I ran username, but the password would be rejected on login by some, but not all of the switches. They are all WS-C2960-48PST-L. The passwords it didn't like contained back ticks "`" (that character under tilde ~ under Esc). The "misbehaving" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(50)SE5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) The "working" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(46)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2). The "misbehaving" switches are running a newer IOS, so this suggests a regression introduced somewhere between 12.2(46)SE and 12.2(50)SE5. I was unable to find any evidence of this being intentional in the release notes for 12.2(50)SE. The API uses JSON to transfer data from SQL Server to the front end. We need to move it to an internal production environment (nothing will be exposed on the public Internet) and we’re having problems - or just not understanding what needs to be done. There are two domains: The corporate domain - where all users login normally. The process domain - contains the database the Web API needs to access. The IT staff wants to put a DMZ between the two domains to house the IIS app and shield the users on the corporate domain from having access into the process domain directly. The ideal configuration is: corp domain (end users) <–> firewall (open port 80) <–> DMZ (web server running IIS) <–> firewall (open port 80 or 1433????) <–> process domain (IIS for Web API and SQL Server) We don’t really understand how to deploy our browser/Web API application in this scenario. Do we need to break up our application so that all the client code is on the IIS server in the DMZ, while the Web API gets installed on the server in the process domain? Does the entire app (client code and Web API) stay together on the IIS server in the DMZ, which then somehow accesses the SQL Server instance to get data? From the IIS server and app in the DMZ, would you simply access the Web API on the server in the process domain by going to http://server/appname/api/getitmes? In the second firewall between the DMZ and the process domain, would you have to open port 1433 or just port 80 since the Web API is a HTTP endpoint? Or, is there some better way of deployment (i.e., how ASP.NET Web API single page applications written all in HTML5 and JavaScript supposed to be deployed to production environments?)? NB: The servers are Win2k8 R2, SQL Server 2k8 R2, and IIS 7.5.

However, after an index reorg causes the log to grow to about 35GB (on a DB with about 17GB of data), the next log backup runs to ~95% completion, then seems to stop. The process shows as suspended, with a wait state of BACKUPIO. CPU, read, and write activity on the SPID also does not change, and the process stays in this state for hours, when normally a backup of this size should complete in about 20 minutes. This server has a single RAID-1 volume, thus the source database files and destination backup files are on the same volume. However, I cannot determine if another process is blocking the backup. The backup SPID cannot be killed, and the only way to terminate the log backup and clear the lock on the backup file is to cycle the SQL Server service. There was one event where the backup terminated completely, with an error that another process had locked the backup file, but no details about what that process was. Can anyone suggest a cause or diagnostic process to this situation?

  • Why do I need to set up Autologon values in registry twice before it works and can i fix this?

    Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. The Problem: I see PsExec executes this properly and all the values are in the registry, however when I restart the machine, the user isn't automatically logged on...When I run this a second time then restart the machine, the user is finally logged on. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however.

  • Disable or remove filter driver for single HID device

    Running Windows XP in a corporate setting here. I have an issue where a filter driver is interfering with the functionality of different USB HIDs. For example graphics tablets do not respond while the filter driver is in place. I've also had the issue with foot pedals used with transcription software. My question is really two fold: A) what makes Windows use a filter driver on one HID but not another? B) when a filter driver is causing conflicts how can I disable it on the affected devices? Background I've previously narrowed down the issue to the filter driver by uninstalling the software (Funk Proxy Host) responsible for the filter driver. The software is a type of RDP we use here at work. (I might have even booted into safe mode and renamed the file, I forget). I believe the filter driver is present to disable or modify the use of the local keyboard and mouse while admin staff are assisting users. Either way I don't have the authority to just go uninstalling this software. As far as I can tell the software versions are the same, however I'm not sure if the device driver definitions are all the same as I don't know where these things would be located. To check for the presence of the filter driver I locate the hardware device in Device Manager, click Properties Driver tab Driver Details.... It shows up as ph32ihid.sys. Even though all machines are meant to have the same SOE and do have Funk Proxy Host installed I don't always have issues with the same HIDs. A few machines here the foot pedals without any issues. I've not had any machines work with the graphics tablet without uninstalling Funk software. Driver details I've just read up a bit more about filter drivers and found the drivers description in the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProxyHostHIDFilter" There it's called "Kernel-mode HID filter driver for the Proxy Host". Presumably I could also disable it here but that would be system wide which is probably not desirable?

  • Linux CentOS strange memory readings

    I am actually a young junior sys admin. I have a question - i am trying to understand how linux deals with memory... while playing around different monitoring programs I found some strange thing. When I run top on my laptop it shows me that FIREFOX process with pid 8778 takes 18,3% of memory (%MEM column). grep "MemTotal" /proc/meminfo Above command give me 1848336kb/1024 = 1805megs of memory (its ok - i have 2 gigs of ram). So if the firefox process takes 18,3% of MEM(according to tops %MEM column) then it takes 0.183 * 1805 which is approximately 325mb of memory. Quite a lot as for firefox... But well, in Linux there are lots of shared libraries that programs commonly uses (like famous libc). And those libraries are added to memory utilization of every process that uses it in the system, despite they are actually reading same file(single object in memory). So top may show too big mem utilization because of those shared libraries. Well, it is time to use PMAP which should show us the real mem utilization of process. But.. pmap -d $(pidof firefox) mapped: 983460K writeable/private: 757164K shared: 66416K so pmap shows that 983460/1024=993MB of memory is mapped to this process. It is in fact much bigger than mem utilization showed by top. Whats wrong here? How pmap can show more than top? even when top adds also the shared libraries (which in fact are single objects in memory) for each process that uses it? and pmap omits it? Regards Krzysztof

  • Korean characters not appearing in Korean Windows XP computer

    I am using a Korean software (with a partial English interface) in a Korean Version of Windows XP SP 3 However, in parts of the software, even when I change the interface to Korean, Korean letters show up as random characters, as shown here: This is happening at others parts of the software as well, and I am not sure what is the difference between the places where this is happening, and places where this is not happening. For example, a command button where Korean letters are showing up properly is shown below: This software is a video conferencing software and has a chat feature as well. When I type into the chat box, i can see the Korean letters appear properly at my side, but when I press Enter and send the message, it changes into random characters as shown above in the chat box. What could be the issue here? Could it be a missing font in my computer? Since this is a Korean Windows installation I was hoping everything would work properly by default. What can be done here? EDIT 1: I asked some other people who are using this software, and they think that the problem is at my end, and playing around with the Regional and Language Settings might solve the problem. Also, they suggested I install all the language packs related to Korean display. But it looks like all the language packs have been installed, and my location is set to Korea in Regional and Language Settings in Control Panel, and I still have this problem. Also, I have had similar problems with displaying Korean on an English Windows XP computer. This answer suggested some solutions, but I still do not quite understand exactly what I have to do (at that time I had not fixed the problem, as I later on changed the computer). If I follow that answer, what fonts exactly do I need to install?

  • Simulate a DFS share for a user not on domain with a folder in path

    I have a consultant whose computer is not on the domain and needs to access various network resources. Unfortunately while adding a computer to the domain is a difficult bureaucratic process (and would disallow much of his development software from even running given the domain restrictions), we can allow him to have credentials to access network resources. As such, he accesses various network resources via NET USE etc. without using DFS. There is one piece of software which requires him to have the same hardcoded path as other domain users but that path is a DFS path which he can't map (i.e., the software checks the path at runtime and will only run if it matches the registered path and will reject it in the context of using a DFS versus conventional machine path) I was wondering if there's some method to simulate the DFS path without actually using DFS. e.g., the path the software needs to see is "\ABC\DFS\software\app.exe" whereas the non DFS path is "\DEF\Software\app.exe" while I could make his hosts file point DEF to ABC, I'm not sure if I can somehow make it point there with the DFS "folder" as well are there any methods for this short of making changes to the AD to allow him to use DFS or add him to the domain (both of which are politically/technically challenging sadly)?     Sorry if this seems like a lame question but I want to be sure before making a decision. The Virtualbox PUEL license says “Personal Use” requires that you use the Product on the same Host Computer where you installed it yourself and that no more than one client connect to that Host Computer at a time for the purpose of displaying Guest Computers remotely. I take this to mean that if I want to setup a development server (web server) that's only used by me to do my work this falls under personal use. But if I make this server available for clients to connect to the websites to view my progress this is no longer personal use also meaning that using Vbox to run a production web server is also against the license. Again sorry if this is a dumb question but I find it hard to follow the wording used in licenses. I know I could go with OSE but I have not looked into VNC versus RDP yet. Thanks.
