• How to Store Cookies in Ruby?

  I am programmatcally accessing authenticated content in my CDN on Google App Engine, and it's returning a cookie that I'm supposed to store: {"set-cookie"=>"ACSID=cookie-hash; expires=Mon, 12-Apr-2010 01:56:06 GMT; path=/"} What do I do with that? This is my first time dealing with Cookies. I can put in the header of the next request, but what's the recommended way to store that? I'm testing this with irb in the console and when I exit and try again, the cookie is gone. How do I save it for a few days/weeks? I'm using pure ruby without Rails or anything. Thanks so much.

• Problem w/ Paperclip, MacPorts, ImageMagick & Snow Leopard

  I'm attempting to use ImageMagick along w/ Paperclip to handle the images on my rails app. The problem is whenever I try to upload an image I get the following in the terminal: [paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: /var/folders/go/goZ833AaFaqyvv5RnLqQmE+++TM/-Tmp-/stream20110107-6356-1xfs9j1-0.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.> I have added the following to my environments/development.rb file: Paperclip.options[:command_path] = "/usr/local/bin" If I try to interact w/ ImageMagick in the terminal by using "convert" or something similar I get: dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libltdl.7.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/convert Reason: Incompatible library version: convert requires version 10.0.0 or later, but libltdl.7.dylib provides version 9.0.0 Trace/BPT trap I've already tried updating everything w/ port but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

• Places to start for system programmer transitioning to web programming

  So here's where I'm coming from: My background is in C#, C++, VB Script, php, javascript, PowerShell, T-SQL, and VB 6. I have some experience with python, and a brief introduction to Ruby On Rails. At work, we're transitioning to a web based UI in the next year or so, but in asp.net & SilverLight. I would like to, if possible, learn more open source web technologies on the side. And, hopefully, in a year and a half or so, I would like to transition to a more open source web technology position. I found that I do really like python, but I'm open to pretty much anything. And yes, I do know Linux (ubuntu and gentoo), as well. And, here's my question: What technologies, frameworks, IDEs, or systems should I be highly proficient in to become a prime candidate for a position doing web application development using non-Microsoft technologies?

• What to use to create bar, line and pie charts with javascript compatible with all major browsers?

  I used to work with flot but it doesn't support pie charts so I'm forced to change. I just saw JS Charts, but their documentation is very obscure regarding cross browser compatibility (I need it to be IE6+ compliant :). Also this will be for commercial use, so I'd rather have something that I can use free of charge jQuery Google chart looks really nice and is well integrated with rails (the framework I'm using) but I'm not sure how good it is. So what do you guys use? What would you recommend keeping in mind that: It will be for commercial use (I can deal with a license, but I'd rather avoid that) It needs to be javascript (no svg, no flash please) It needs to be compatible with IE6+, FF, Chrome, Opera and Safari It needs to be pretty ^^ If it uses jQuery it's even better

• Scrollable display of multiple video icons

  Hello, I want to have multiple video icons at the top my website's front page. I will have about 20 or so which won't fit on one line (I want to keep the videos on one like) so I thought of having two button on the right of the group and on the left of the group where you click to scroll and view more videos. Do you know an easy way to do this? I can pass in the video links from the server in different Divs or anyway that will make it easy. I thought of using AJAX and pass it different set every time from the server with every click (I'm using Rails and it's fairly easy to do it) but that will be an extra load on the server which I'm trying to avoid. I'd rather send all the icons at once and let the JavaScript handle the scrolling. I thought of using iFrame but I don't like the idea of scrollbar and wanted to be more like button Any ideas?   Hi, Not 100% sure how to frame this question but here goes... I currently work as a Rails developer but want to work on more substancial / "meaty" projects and have always been very interested in embedded systems, especially systems that run on aircraft and especially submarines.....I know strange combination. I have been doing some searching & found lockheed martin produces a lot of underwater systems for various navys around the world e.g. http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/nssn/ However, there is very little information about what software is used within these systems, what OS's they use or anything else "technical", presume there is a lot of C / C++ involved but that is just a guess... so its hard to know where to even begin learning what is required to potential work in these areas. Just wondering if anyone has any experiance working with or more information about embeddeed systems in either the airline (onboard flight systems) or especially submarine systems? Thanks!

  Seaside is known as "the heretical web framework". One of the points that make it heretical is that it has much shared state. That however is something which, in my current understanding, hinders easy scaling. Ruby on rails on the other hand shares as less state as possible. It has been known to scale pretty well, even if it is dog slow compared to modern smalltalk vms. flickr uses php and has scaled to an extremly big infrastructure... So has anybody some experience in the scaling of Seaside?

  I know that Facebook use their own OpenID-like system called "Facebook connect", which you can use to authenticate users on your site, among other features. In my case I have multiple Ruby on Rails applications: users.example.com profiles.example.com photos.example.com ... I would like to use 'users.example.com' as a web service that allows users to authenticate to all my other applications the same way as works "Facebook connect" or OpenID. In few words, 'users.example.com' must works as a "OpenID-like system" for my applications in 'example.com'. Can anyone give me tips and links to some useful resources? P.S.: since I am a newbie in this matter, I do not know if I'm saying things that make sense. So someone could help me to understand (if I am wrong) ...

• Are there any issues with MySQL's i18n(indic language) support ?

  Hi All, We're evaluating MySQL and PostgreSQL for building our indic language web application which will use MySQL or PostgreSQL. One of my colleagues mentioned that MySQL had issues with i18n. I mostly come from the Oracle world and although I've played a lil with MySQL, I don't know enough to know that there are issues with its i18n support. Does anyone know issues with MySQL's i18n support and if PostgreSQL would be better placed for building an application with indic language support(kannada, telugu, tamil, etc) ? Just so you know, we're going to be using J2EE to build this application and we will be using JDBC drivers to access the DB. P.S : Will anything change if we were to use Rails to build the app instead of J2EE ? Thank you,

• How Do I create a synchronous version of NSURLConnection

  I am using NSURLConnection inside of an NSIncrementalStore to synchronize my NSManagedObject with rest based web service built in Rails. I am aware of +sendSynchronousRequest:returningResponse:error but my understanding is that will not allow me to access such things as the HTTP response status code which I will need to properly handle the response, my understanding is sendSynchronousRequest returns the data if it responds in the 200 range and fails if it doesn't and doesn't really give you much more than that. I'm assuming I will somehow have to block the current method call after the NSURLConnection is instantiated and unblock it after NSURLConnection's delegate sets some value that can be returned by the blocked method. I'm assuming this will involve some combination of NSLock and NSThread but I really don't know where to start with this, any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

• Canonicalizing XML in Ruby

  I'm working on a SAML gateway using Ruby/Rails and I'm attempting to write some code that validates the xml digital signature of the incoming SAML response against the x509 cert of the originating service. My problem: the signature depends on a canonicalized version of the XML that is hashed and then signed and I'm having trouble finding a ruby lib/gem that will canonicalize XML per the spec. I found a super old gem on rubyforge that is a mess but I'd be more interested if something like nokogiri supported this kind of functionality (from the nokogiri docs, it doesn't). I've googled extensively but thought I'd ask around here to see if anyone has any good insights before I go and try to write my own version or rework the existing c14n-r library.

• Generating PDF's via Delayed Job while maintaing a RESTful pattern.

  Hi, currently I am running a Rails app on Heroku, and everything is working great with exception of generating PDF documents that sometimes contain thousands of records. Heroku has a built-in timeout of 30 seconds, so if the request takes more than 30 seconds, it's abandoned. That's fine, since they offer delayed_job support built-in. However, all of the PDF's i generate follow a typical restful pattern. For instance, a request to "/posts.pdf" generates a pdf (using PRAWN and PRAWNTO) and it's delivered to the browser. So my basic question is, how do I create dynamically generated PDF's with delayed_job while maintaining the basic RESTful patterns Rail's so conveniently provides. Thanks.

But I am not in the mood to study more Java, so I would like to know if this one is worth my time ( that would mean, less configuration and action mapping and so on) Is it better then Struts 2(WebWorks) ??? because those are way better then Struts 1 but still not a RoR. • Correct way to safely store token/secret/etc from OAuth?

  I just started looking into OAuth and it looks really nice. I have oauth with twitter working in ruby right now. Now I'm wondering, what is the recommended safe way to store the responses in my local database and session? What should I store? Where should I store it? This example twitter-oauth-with-rails app stores a user.id in the session, and the user table has the token and secret. But that seems like it'd be really easy to hack and get the secret by just passing in a slew of test user ids, no?

  Hi, So using the regular MongoDB library in Ruby I have the following query to find average filesize across a set of 5001 documents: avg = 0 total = collection.count() Rails.logger.info "#{total} asset creation stats in the system" collection.find().each {|row| avg += (row["filesize"] * (1/total.to_f)) if row["filesize"]} Its pretty simple, so I'm trying to do the same using map/reduce as a learning exercise. This is what I came up with: map = 'function(){emit("filesizes", {size: this.filesize, num: 1});}' reduce = 'function(k, vals){ var result = {size: 0, num: 0}; for(var x in vals) { var new_total = result.num + vals[x].num; result.num = new_total result.size = result.size + (vals[x].size * (vals[x].num / new_total)); } return result; }' @results = collection.map_reduce(map, reduce) However the two queries come back with two different results! What am I doing wrong?

• Programmatically Download Image to Desktop from Remote App with Ruby?

  I was thinking about making a little crop/resize batch processor online, and wanted to know if there was a way for me to do the following: upload image and specify dimensions click "process" and app resizes image image downloads automatically to wherever it was I uploaded it (say from my desktop), but with a new name (based on the time for example). This would make it so I could host a free image processor that never stored any data other than tempfiles. Is that possible? Something like Rails' send_file method, but I'm using Sinatra and am looking for something in pure ruby.

• Running Ruby app on Apache

  I have been learning Ruby lately, and I want to upload a test web application to my server. But I can't figure out how to get it to run on my shared hosting. My Hosting Details Shared Hosting with JustHost (see here for list of features) OS: Linux Apache: 2.2.11 cPanel: 11.25.0-STABLE No SSH access. Can install Ruby Gems. Can't install Apache modules. Can "Manage Ruby on Rails Applications" through cPanel. Mongrel gem is installed. I built the following simple HelloWorld Ruby Rack app using Sinatra: #!/usr/bin/ruby ruby require 'rubygems' require 'sinatra' get '/hi' do "Hello World!" end I just can can't figure out how to "start" the application. Do I need to tell Mongrel (or maybe Apache) that the application exists somehow? How do I start this app running? I am happy to provide more info if needed.

• Rails3 and safe nl2br !

  Hi, I have a system for the users to be able to post comments. The comments are grasped into a textarea. My problem is to format the comments with br tag to replace \n In fact, i could do something like that s.gsub(/\n/, '<br />') But the xss protection including in rails escapes br tags. So i could do this s.gsub(/\n/, '<br />').html_safe But then, all the tags are accepted even script.... causing a big security problem So my question is : how to format text with br safely ? • git noob : why does "git push origin master" fail to github ?

I created a repository on github and generated a rails project on my windows vista home premium (which has msys git 1.7.0.2). 3) I then committed the generated files 4) g it remote add origin [email protected]:anjanb/Jobs2Go.git git push origin master On the 5th step, I get the following error. "Permission denied (publickey). fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly" I vaguely remember following some sshgen steps I took when I created my 1st github repository but I have forgotten what it was. • make mongrel_rails (localhost:3000) visible to a virtual machine

  I develop rails in ubuntu and i just set up a virtualbox windows xp virtual machine for IE testing. I'd like to be able to run mongrel_rails in ubuntu and then jump into the vm to check it out, so i can jump back, make a change, jump into the vm again, reload the page and test it, etc. Is this possible? In this sort of situation in the past i've had to set up an apache server on my dev machine and run mongrel under that, in order to get an externally visible (ie visible to my local network) ip address that i then paste into the address bar of IE in the vm. Is this really necessary? Is there a simpler way? Can i do something with my /etc/hosts or sites-available files to just make up some arbitrary network address which points to localhost:3000 in ubuntu? Or something? thanks, max

• Automatic website screenshots for Web app?

  Is there a way to take automatic screenshots of a web page (by specifying its URL) in a web app using PHP or Ruby on Rails? Perhaps using a plugin or some external REST service. I've researched a lot, and nothing seems to fit except something like this (http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/2010/02/automated-take-screenshots-website-free/) but I doubt Wordpress would just let me spam their servers for something not Wordpress related. I'd like to use it for my own web application so I'm not sure of the legal implications..how hard is this to implement myself? What does it entail? Thanks!
