  • Why does my computer run slowly and freeze sometimes?

    EDIT I disabled sound in the BIOS, rebooted and it hung. I removed the (previously) faulty HDD, rebooted and it hung. I have managed to get my Realtek audio manager open again after its mysterious disappearance. Subsequently my microphone is now working again, to fix it I had to uninstall audio drivers, disable audio in BIOS, install audio drivers, enable audio in BIOS. Access via network (with faulty HDD in) seems to not be triggering hangs at the moment. I think with the sound problem fixed it might play a little nicer, but I think its still going to hang. If it does, then I'm fairly sure its been narrowed down to the mobo. EDIT Pretty convinced my motherboard is the culprit, because nothing else seems to have any obvious problems (bar the hard drive, which the PC still hangs without it being plugged in) So thank you all for helping, once I get more rep ill up a few of the answers. My PC is doing some weird things... Sometimes when I open up a program, lets say Adobe Photoshop, it will load everything normally, nice and quick no problems and I can use it fine. Other times its a little odd, and it loads the program as if it's only using half of the CPU. It's pretty obvious when it does it, normally the loading screen skims past, but when it does this weird load you see it slowly tick though each thing, and the program itself becomes incredibly slow. Even Google Chrome does it sometimes. Yet when I exit and reopen the program without doing anything else, it typically opens fine without lagging. I think this problem is probably a symptom of something bigger, because of other problems I'm having. Random hangs; no matter what I have open or what I'm doing. My PC will sort of freeze up for a few seconds. If music is playing it will either loop the last second or two, or it will buzz. This only lasts for a few seconds then it returns to normal without having to restart. During this time all programs lock up and freeze, and the mouse and keyboard are useless. I am also having a weird issue with my audio jacks, without touching my PC at all, sometimes I will see a popup saying that I have unplugged something or plugged something in, neither of which has actually happened. Pretty sure this is cause by the motherboard. I recently had a 'Pink Screen of Death' (yes pink) which pointed to my audio drivers. The lockups seem to happen with some consistency when someone is accessing my shared files via my home LAN. Which leads me to believe either one of my hard drives is acting up or more likely the controller. One of my drives had a bit of a crash before, I used Spinrite and managed to recover my stuff and now the drive appears to be working okay. This is possibly adding to the problems. My best guess is something has gone wrong with my motherboard, possibly a power issue or a chip has died, I really don't know.   • Mac OS X app window is too large - how can I resize?

    I'm a MacBook user, and when I'm home I plug into a large external monitor to get additional screen space. When I'm on the go I disconnect and use my laptop's built-in display. For the most part this arrangement works very well; however, I occasionally run into an issue where I'll resize an app on the external, causing it to be too large to fit on the built-in screen when I disconnect. Most apps don't have a problem decreasing their height automatically or resizing to fit when I click the green orb, but some (like iTunes) don't want to cooperate. How can I resize apps like iTunes without reconnecting to my external? Here's a screenshot:

Then based on 1: a) deleting web.config and renaming should only happen if code in destination is new b) Robocopy should not override files if they are the same I think there is /Xo option to do that any idea how to achieve that? :)

  • Parallels 6 - Is It Just Me or Does It Run Really Slowly?

    I've been running Parallels since version 2 with great success. I use it as my .Net development environment and over the last few years have converted so many others to the Parallels/Mac way of doing Windows/.Net development that I feel I should be getting perks/gifts and/or freebies from Parallels Corporation ;-) A month or so ago I upgraded to version 6 and ... immediately wished I hadn't. I'm currently running it on a laptop - a 2009 MacBook Pro (13"/2.53Ghz/4GB) while my MacPros at work and home are still running v5. I have seen nothing in v6 that makes me want to upgrade the install on those. The general problem is performance - upon starting or suspending a vm (always Windows 7 Ultimate), OS X slows down, quite often freezing for a minute or two at a time. The performance of the vms themselves are fine, but for me the point of this set-up is to be able to do web-browsing, email checking etc. on the OS X side of things while doing the stuff that can only be done on Windows (Visual Studio, SQL Server tools) on Windows. I have been using Parallels for a while so at least feel like I know what I'm doing so at the moment I am heading towards forming an opinion that its Parallels thats to blame. I've tweaked and tweaked all the vm configuration properties but to no avail. Support emails to the company have all received replies - there are no documented case of the issue you mention. Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, have you found a fix?

    Since having issues installing Ubuntu side-by-side with Windows 8, I thought I'd try running Ubuntu in a VM instead. However, VMWare player has no love for Windows 8 yet (invalid VM86 or something similar), and AFAIK the promised hypervisor options are not currently available for playing with. So: Are there any VM hosts that do work in Windows 8 Developer Preview at this point? (specifically for running Ubuntu) Alternatively, does Wubi work on Windows 8? It seems not; from Wubi: An error occurred: 'WindowsBackend' object has no attribute 'iso_path'

  • Run a local script on a remote server using ssh with out having to worry about quotes

    So I have been running local scripts fine on a remote server: ssh user@server '`cat local-script.sh`' However, today I have a script that has both single and double quotes in it. Which causes the script to fail because the output of cat local-script.sh is wrapped in quotes. With out modifying the script itself, is there a better way to handle this? I thought this may work: ssh user@server $(<local-script.sh) But is does not seem to do anything...

  • vmware player won't run on CentOS due to missing /dev/vmmon, what could be the problem?

    So I've tried installing vmware player 3.1.4 and 3.1.3 and both times had the same problem, when I try to load a VM I get the error "Could not open /dev/vmmon". When I ls /dev/ I can see there is no "vmmon" device present. When I try running: sudo /etc/init.d/vmware start I get the output: Starting VMware services: VMware USB Arbitrator [ OK ] Virtual machine monitor [FAILED] Virtual machine communication interface [ OK ] VM communication interface socket family [ OK ] Blocking file system [ OK ] Virtual ethernet [FAILED] which shows that the Virtual Machine Monitor fails to load. I tried following the advice on this site and ran vmware-modconfig --console --install-all I notice during the compilation there are no errors, but at the end I get the message: Starting VMware services: VMware USB Arbitrator [ OK ] Virtual machine monitor [FAILED] Virtual machine communication interface [ OK ] VM communication interface socket family [ OK ] Blocking file system [ OK ] Virtual ethernet [ OK ] Unable to start services Out of curiousity I tried: sudo /sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.6.18-238.9.1.el5xen/misc/vmmod.ko But got the error message: insmod: error inserting 'vmmon.ko': -1 Invalid module format I have a feeling this may be the root of the problem, but I don't know what could be causing it or how to fix it.

  • Is there a way to make scp run faster on a Mac OS X?

    I'm trying to a upload a Flex generated SWF file from my Macbook (running Snow Leopard) using the command scp main.swf server.com:/ I had setup key authentication to prevent typing the user/pass every time. This process normally takes up to two minutes using my connection at home (768kbps down/300+ kbps up). The interesting part is that when I use WinSCP in my Windows XP machine, the process only takes 30 seconds max. Both my MacBook and Windows XP machine use the same internet connection. The MacBook is connected to the router via cable (which should be faster right?) while the Windows XP connects through Wifi. Let me know if you need additional information in order to diagnose the problem. Thanks!

  • Do I need to run a verfication on LTO tape backups even though the drives themselves perform verification as they write?

    We have an LTO-3 Tape drive in a Dell media library that we use for our tape backups. The article about LTO on Wikipedia states that: LTO uses an automatic verify-after-write technology to immediately check the data as it is being written, but some backup systems explicitly perform a completely separate tape reading operation to verify the tape was written correctly. This separate verify operation doubles the number of end-to-end passes for each scheduled backup, and reduces the tape life by half. What I would like to know is, do I need my backup software (Backup Exec in this case) to perform a verify on these tapes or is the verify-after-write technology inherent in LTO drives sufficient? I would also be curious if Backup Exec understands the verify-after-write technology enough to alert me if that technology couldn't veryify the data or will it just ignore it making it useless anyway since even if the drive detecs a problem I would never know about it.

  • Can Autodesk Flame run with an nVidia Quadro FX3800 SDI and output to preview through SDI???

    I am running on Linux RHEL 4.3, DKU 5.0.1. Everything seems to be ok on the xorg.conf and init.cfg, but when I start my projects and Flame enables output to preview I start having preview on my SDI monitor and stop seeing on my main monitor (which is connected to the DisplayPort). Could it be posible that Flame needs Quadro FX4x00/5x00 series with dual DVI to output both monitors?? Cause the FX3800 has only one DVi (which is connected to the SDI card) and 2 DisplayPorts as additional output monitors. Anyone knows a config or workaround this problem?? Thanks ahead!!!

    Very noob question - all of this is new to me - not really sure how to get started. Overview: I'm taking over an existing wep project that has been developed in aptana and deployed in xampp setup - I also have access to Git repository on local directory. I want to import the web application into aptana, run it and begin updating/editing - bit of steep learning curve for me What is the best way to import? And what should I import? What should it look like in aptanan? I tried importing what I think is the root file from the git folder ("existing folder as new project")- it contains things like css, doc, img and js.   • What is going on when I can't access an SMB server share (not accessible error) until I run cmdkey to delete the credential?

    I have a network connection share issue. The first connection works, and seems to stay connected for at least a few hours. However, after each time my windows 7 PC reboots, it can no longer form a network connection to the shared folder, nor browse to it, until I not only unmap and remap the mapped drive, but also, I have to use cmdkey to delete the stored credentials like this: cmdkey /delete:Domain:target=HOSTNAME My work PC is on a domain, and I am not the IT administrator, but I'm curious if there is anything I can do to investigate this issue. Any settings in registry or group policy that I could examine to see why the first connection works, but each subsequent attempt (once a stored credential exists) to browse or use the connection, fails with a connection error saying it is "not accessible", like this: I do not even get any error until at least several minutes go by. THe first thing I see is a window frozen and empty, and then I get this error: This has happened when connecting to a share on a DROBO device, and on a share which is not on the domain, but which was a Microsoft Home Server. I wonder if there's something broken in WIndows 7 professional with regards to connecting to non-domain shares when an active directory domain controller exists, and a particular workstation is joined to a domain? The problem only occurs if I click "remember credentials". It is not fixed by any amount of working with net use. Usingcmdkey to delete all stored credentials for the host is the only way to get back in, and it affects all non-domain shared folders. Update I'm hoping there are some registry locations I could check that could be misconfigured in some way that might explain why SMB/CIFS stored credentials for non-domain systems seem to be auto-invalidated in this weird way. Knowing how whacko Microsoft Windows domain and security handling is sometimes, this could be some kind of stupid "feature".

    There's a headless Ubuntu instance used as a host for our build server. I have some UI code that requires some graphical output. Installing a vnc4server and redirecting a DISPLAY to it worked like a charm. Not that my UI tests are running but test scripts can take screen shots. Problem is that I need to set the resolution that vnc4server uses to serve the graphical content. Does anybody know how to configure it on Ubuntu server?

  • Chrome - Why am I automatically authenticated to a web app even after clearing browser cookies?

    I am accessing a web application using Chrome. If I sign out of the app and clear all Chrome history/cookies/etc (even Flash cookies which are now handled by Chrome in the same Clear History area) and then re-access the site, I am automatically logged in without being prompted for credentials. I then launched Chrome in Incognito mode and was able to reproduce the same behavior. However, the I was prompted upon the first logon while in Incognito mode. The web application behaves as expected in Internet Explorer 10. Some info about the application: It's a Sharepoint site using NTLM authentication The credentials are Active Directory-based, as the username is domain\username My connection is over the Internet and there is no AD relationship between my local Windows account, my Windows PC. In other words I (meaning my locally logged on user and my PC) are not in any way part of their AD domain. The site is running SSL on port 443 Why might Chrome be automatically authenticating me?

  • Cannot get nscd to run. DNS cache stale as a result

    I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue on a MediaTemple server (running CentOS5) where the DNS cache has grown stale - I think because nscd has crashed. I've tried restarting nscd: # service nscd restart Stopping nscd: [FAILED] Starting nscd: [ OK ] This makes sense since I believe nscd has crashed so it shouldn't already be running, but When I view the status of nscd: # service nscd status nscd dead but subsys locked And ps -A returns no processes related to nscd (I assume because it's dead). I've edited /etc/nscd.conf and uncommented the line that defines the location for the log file. It created the file but it never writes anything to it. I tried looking at the init script but found that it's no help since the script thinks everything is running fine - the service returns that it started up correctly. How do I 'unlock' the subsys that nscd is complaining about?

    I have a server ClueReleaseManager which I have installed on a Ubuntu 12.04 system from a separate user (named pypi), and I want to be able to start this server at startup. I already have tried to create a simple bash script with some commands (login as user pypi, use a virtual python environment, start the server), but this does not work properly. Either the terminal crashes or when I try to ask the status of the service it is started and I am logged in as user pypi ...? So, here the question: What are the steps to take to make sure the ClueReleaseManager service properly starts up on boot time, and which I can control (start/stop/..) during runtime, while the service is running from a user pypi? Additional information and constraints: I want to do this as simple as possible Without any other packages/programs to be installed I am not familiar with the Ubuntu 12.04 init structure All the information I found on the web is very sparse, confusing, incorrect or does not apply to my case of running a service as a different user from root.

    If I have two computers, both running Windows 7, on my home network, is there some way to write a script so that I can click on a single icon on the one computer and make the other computer execute a program? Clearly, I could do this by accessing the other computer through remote desktop connection and then executing the program, but I would like to avoid (or at least automate) making the connection so I can just click a single icon to have it happen.
