• UI font has rendering glitches in GNOME Shell

  I don't really know how to describe this problem in English. A picture can say more words - look at the tabs at the top of the linked image. The current font settings are shown as well. I don't know what basic info I should provide so if something missing, please tell me. Ubuntu 12.04 GNOME Shell 3.4.1 I know, a reboot can make everything normal but I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can fix this problem (or bug). I have connected my ipod touch 32gb in my ubuntu 10.10 os.It's connected on os and shows in desktop. but it's not showing as a device in Rhythmbox music player. and also I can't open directly like folder or drive or usb device. when I try to open it show this Error: Could not display "gphoto2://[usb:001,003]/". • Which graphics library should I be using?

  I have been developing and maintaining a WPF application, for which I've recently been tasked with adding a 3D representation of some of the data. I'm new to graphics programming in every kind of way so I'm curious whether I should stick with 3D graphics capabilities built into WPF or should I investigate other solutions, like OpenTK or SharpGL My objective is to represent the data so that it will eventually appear similar to: with nodes connected by lines. I need to rotate the image around each axis and each node will be a 3D model of the device it represents. So far, I've been able to experiment with the tutorial outlined here: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) 3D Tutorial and it was helpful as an introduction. But I can see that there are other ways to implement 3D graphics solutions and I wonder if they are more suitable for my needs, or should I stick with the in-built WPF solution? What are the pros and cons of each?

• Hosted News Carousel

  I'm trying to add a news carousel on my OneHub site. I know there are quite a few plugins that I can use, but I'm looking for a ready-to-use hosted solution where people can log-on and manage the content, and I can simply include as an iFrame widget on our OneHub site. We would prefer to use Expression Engine, since we're using this on some of our other websites. It looks like Expression Engine + JQuery Cycle Rotator might be an option, not sure how easily I can get this onto OneHub though... WordPress has a carousel plugin as well that I'll explore. Anyhow, while I'm trying out these options, I figured I would put a question out there for any thoughts or advice, other solutions, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alan

• Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04--keyboard & mouse no longer work--system down!

  I upgraded from Ubuntu 11 to 12.04, today, and everything seemed to go smoothly up to, and including the reboot. However, I now find that my mouse and keyboard no longer function, so I cannot login or otherwise use my computer. I have read other posts on this topic, but most of the answers seem to require the use of a keyboard to implement the solution--and I can't use my keyboard! I downloaded a 12.04 LiveCD and tried booting from it, but I have the same issue with that--no keyboard! My systems is a Lenovo with an AMD64 dual processor, and my keyboard and mouse are USB attached and shared with two other Windows PCs via a KVM switch (so I no the keyboard and mouse work!). I would appreciate some hints about how to make this PC usable, again. Thanks!

• Search for odt files without indexing

  I am looking for: a way to search inside odt files (i.e. search for contents, not name) that does not require any kind of indexing that is graphical and very user-friendly (for a relatively old person, who does not like computers much) I know that it is possible to have 1) and 2): for x in `find . -iname '*odt'`; do odt2txt $x | grep Query; done works well enough, and it's pretty fast. But I wonder if there is already a good solution that does this with a GUI (or can be adapted to do this easily)

• How to display consistent background image

  Drawing a large background is relatively slow in PyGame. In order to avoid drawing BG every frame, you could draw it once, then do nothing. However, if something is overdrawn onto the surface and keeps moving, you will need to redraw the background in order to "erase" the color pixels left by moving object; otherwise, you will have "traces" of the moving object. I have a moving object in my PyGame. However, I do not want to "clear the color buffer" by redrawing the background image. Redrawing the background image every frame is slow. My solution : I will "clear" only required portions (where the "traces" of moving object are left) of the "buffer" by redrawing portions of background. Is there any other better way to have a consistent background?

• Alternatives to using cookies?

  Whate are alternatives to using cookies/client-side storage for a PHP/MySQL based site on Apache. Scenario/Requirements: I want to try using some anti-bot code to prevent specific scrapers etc. from accessing the site. I would like to run this code before launching the rest of the site (before DB access etc.). I don't want to constantly run the same code on every page-load after a visitor has passed the initial check. I'd like to avoid the use of Cookies/Client side storage if at all possible. The only solution I can currently think of is to write files to the server based on the visitors IP/UA, or to write a list of them to a single file. Yet this has the limitation of multiple users through a proxy/same connection, etc ... So, any ideas/suggestions? Or am I simply over working the issue?

  Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs?   I'm trying to make a Sudoku puzzle generator. It's a lot harder than I expected and the more I get into it, the harder it gets! My current approach is to split the problem into 2 steps: Generate a complete (solved) Sudoku puzzle. Remove numbers until it's solveable and has only 1 solution. In step 1, since I'm using a brute force methods, I'm facing some run time issues. Is there an optimal way of filling in a complete Sudoku puzzle? In step 2, what kind of algorithm should I use to "puzzlize" a solved sudoku?

  I am working on a web-based application which combines elements of what my client would call a CMS (content management system) and CRM (customer relations management) but also adds in many other business-specific features such as bookings management, staff task allocation management, wages calculations, document version control etc. However, I'm struggling to find a catch-all term for this type of application so I can research how other people have gone about creating such an integrated solution. Can anyone recommend a term I can use to refer to this, both internally in our team, for the client so they know what to call the 'system' and also for me personally, so that I can ask the Stack community further questions?

• How do I know if a particular build has a particular version control change in it?

  Let's say I have a build. I need to know if a particular changelist/commit is present in that build. How would I solve this problem? I can think of a couple of possible approaches: 1) Add the changelist number into the binary so that I can look somewhere in the GUI and know what the changelist number is. I can then use this information to determine if the change I'm interested in is within that build. 2) Tag version control using some string that uniquely identifies that build. What unique string would I use? Is either of these two better? Are there any other better approaches? The solution would have to work for both Mac and Windows builds.

• Need private personal access to ~three PHP pages

  I would like secure access to the text output by three PHP scripts (the text output is JavaScript and html) . The security level is much less then financial data but important none-the-less. I have considered purchasing AND studying https and SSL certificates. Hostgator charges an extra $2/month for a private ip plus $50+ anually for a certificate. This is more then I want to spend for this project (time + money). Is there a simpler solution that is: less expensive easier to implement. I'm open to different approaches.

• Securing Facebook

  Probably like most of you, I am concerned about the privacy of Facebook. Some people suggested that I use the HTTPS address instead. Unfortunately, many links in the HTTPS page itself link back to HTTP. So I am wondering whether it is possible in Ubuntu to redirect any request to: http://www.facebook.com/ to https://www.facebook.com/ This way I feel safer. If you also know the solution for Windows, it might be great to share (probably as a comment to my question rather than answer, as this forum is supposed to be for Ubuntu) so that I can share it with friends.

• Are there any reliable solutions for annotations/reflection/code-metadata in C?

  Not all languages support java-like annotations or C#-like attributes or code metadata in general, however that doesn't mean it is not possible to have in languages that don't have this. An example is PHP with Stubbles and the Doctrine annotation library. My question is, is there anything like this for C?, or are there any reliable ways of doing reflection with extended code metadata in C? Ideally, I'm looking for something that reads javadoc-like comments. Edit: The reason for me *needing* as opposed to just wanting, is that I need to generate C code and code-metadata from a database, as well as being able to edit that metadada and update the database. The volume of the work (~15,000 variables/structures/functions to generate from this database) justifies the solution.

• Defaulting internet requests to wlan0 when also connected to eth0

  I am trying to configure an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition as a server. I currently have the DHCP server working through eth0. My problem is that I only have one Ethernet port, and am receiving Internet though a mobile hotspot on my phone through wlan0, and whenever I attempt to connect through wlan0 and eth0 I am unable to access the Internet through the server or the clients. When I disconnect from eth0 I then regain access. I have searched extensively for a solution, and have come up short. Any help is appreciated.

  I have the stable version of Google Chrome on my box. And each time I'm trying to install beta or/and unstable versions then I run into the same problem: The following packages will be REMOVED google-chrome-stable The following NEW packages will be installed google-chrome-beta 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 34.5 MB of archives. After this operation, 3,109 kB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? I need to remove the first version before installing another. I know I can't install existing packages side by side but I'm looking for solution not for answer like: "You can't do it", I already know I can not. So in summary my question is: How can I install all Google Chrome versions next to each other? (There needs to be a way..)

• How to estimate what kind of server resources you will require at launch?

  How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?
