• Introducing the New Boot Framework in CE 7

  CE 7 introduces a new boot loader framework, BLDR (platform\common\src\common\bldr\). Some people like its powerful and flexbility, others may feel its too complicate as a boot loader framework. Despite to the favor, it is already there; so let's take a look at its features. Unlike the previous BL framwork (CE7 still provides it in platform\common\src\common\boot\) is a monolithic library, the new framework has more architecture structure. It not only defines main body but also provides rich components, such as filesystem (BinFS/FAT), download transportations, display, logging and block devices: bios INT13, FAL, IDE, Flash ( and etc. Note that in the block device category, the FAL is for legacy FMD/FAL, Flash is for latest MSFlash. Some of you may have encountered MSFlash MDD/PDD compatible partition is hard to created in bootloader and now it provides a clean solution! (Since this is a big topic, I will introduce it in future post) Today, I am going to show you some basic helper components - Image Loading functions. When OS image stored in the block device, it can be a file format, says your NK.BIN in the FAT volume or a RAW format, says the image is programmed to a BINFS partition. • Raspberry Pi and Java SE: A Platform for the Masses

  One of the more exciting developments in the embedded systems world has been the announcement and availability of the Raspberry Pi, a very capable computer that is no bigger than a credit card.  At $35 US, initial demand for the device was so significant, that very long back orders quickly ensued. After months of patiently waiting, mine finally arrived.  Those initial growing pains appear to have been fixed, so availability now should be much more reasonable. At a very high level, here are some of the important specs: Broadcom BCM2835 System on a chip (SoC) ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700MHz Videocore 4 GPU capable of BluRay quality playback 256Mb RAM 2 USB ports and Ethernet Boots from SD card Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) available So what's taking place taking place with respect to the Java platform and Raspberry Pi? A Java SE Embedded binary suitable for the Raspberry Pi is available for download (Arm v6/7) here.  Note, this is based on the armel architecture, a variety of Arm designed to support floating point through a compatibility library that operates on more platforms, but can hamper performance.  In order to use this Java SE binary, select the available Debian distribution for your Raspberry Pi. The more recent Raspbian distribution is based on the armhf (hard float) architecture, which provides for more efficient hardware-based floating point operations.  However armhf is not binary compatible with armel.  As of the writing of this blog, Java SE Embedded binaries are not yet publicly available for the armhf-based Raspbian distro, but as mentioned in Henrik Stahl's blog, an armhf release is in the works. As demonstrated at the just-completed JavaOne 2012 San Francisco event, the graphics processing unit inside the Raspberry Pi is very capable indeed, and makes for an excellent candidate for JavaFX.  As such, plans also call for a Pi-optimized version of JavaFX in a future release too. A thriving community around the Raspberry Pi has developed at light speed, and as evidenced by the packed attendance at Pi-specific sessions at Java One 2012, the interest in Java for this platform is following suit.   Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. • Unknown filesystem with GRUB rescue caption cannot boot

  I just recently partitioned my hard drive and I got this error when booting Ubuntu on that drive. unknown filesystem followed by the GRUB rescue terminal. I did some research and tried to download super grub disk but I cant seem to fix it with that. I have two hard disks. One with Windows Vista on it and the other with Ubuntu which is the one I partitioned. There was 100 GB reserved for all the Ubuntu partitions that I needed and the rest was split into two partitions, one for backup folders for my Windows machine and the other for music production which is the one that I created. The space used to created that was shrunk from my backup partition so I didn't mess with any of the Ubuntu partitions. As of now there are a total of 5 partitions. I also downloaded Rescatux which is another Super GRUB Disk for GRUB 2 not knowing which grub I had. It still didn't work. In Super Grub Disk I tried to swap the hard disk because that was what was said to do in order to fix the grub, that didn't work it said it was unsuccessful. I even tried to unplug the Windows hard disk and run Super GRUB Disk and that wasn't successful either. Is there another way I can fix this? Please any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to have a nice step by step response.

• Dell Alps Touchpad not working

  I have a Dell 17R SE with Ubuntu 13.04. The touchpad is recognized as PS/2 mouse out of the box, giving just normal touchpad behaviour, but no tap to click, no scrolling, etc. Most answers related to that issue suggest trying an ALPS driver from dahetral.com: http://www.dahetral.com/public-download For installing I followed the steps on this page: https://www.linuxwind.org/html/dell-touchpad-driver-for-ubuntu-13-04.html Now my xinput looks like this: Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? PS/2 Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint id=14 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555b id=16 [slave pointer (2)] My touchpad isn't working at all now, just the two hardware buttons for left and right mouse buttons work. Interestingly also the tap to click functions works, but only in the address bar of nautilus, nowhere (!) else. What can I do? I would even switch back to initial state, where at least the basic touchpad functionality worked, i I knew, how to get there.

• Tip: Recording Non-Maximized Applications in UPK

  Have you ever wanted to record an application that would not maximize, or an application that would look strange maximized? Or perhaps your Windows Desktop has become cluttered with icons and you don't want to capture the clutter in your recordings. Here's a tip that will help: create a background for your recording. Create a blank HTML file with a black background in your favorite HTML editor. Or download this sample file: UPK_Recording_Background.html (right click to save). If you would prefer a different color background in the sample file, open it in Notepad and change “#000” to a different HTML color. Open UPK_Recording_Background.html in its own web browser window. Press F11 to make the web browser window full screen. This should give you a completely black screen. (This works great in modern versions of the most popular browsers. I successfully used Firefox 15, Chrome 22, and IE 9. Open or switch to the desired application so that it sits on top of the full screen browser window. If the application you are recording is also in a browser, it is important that it be in a separate browser window from the UPK_Recording_Background.html. Record your topic normally. The above steps create a recording background using an HTML file and a web browser. This is just one method, for instance you could do the same thing with an image editor and an image viewer with a full screen view. Now you can record a non-maximized application without a distracting background. I hope you find this to be a helpful tip. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Clarke has said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. As a kid in the midst of an increasing technological revolution, electronics were at the heart of that. Learning electronics was made easy through the Science Fair Electronic Project Kits found at Radioshack. Through the project guides, kids could construct various ‘experiments’ by attaching wires to terminal springs that make circuits. The terminal springs would wire in components such as LED segment lights, photo sensors, resistors, diodes, etc. While it was fun getting the projects to work, the manuals lacked in depth explanation as to what was happening in the circuit to produce the project’s result. Why it was awesome: First, it was a simple buy for parents. Everything you needed to get your child interested in electronics was right in the kit. You didn’t need to breadboard or solder. I remember a distinct feeling of accomplishment making a high-water alarm or a light-sensor game with the realization that the bundles of wires springing up from the kit were actually doing something! Modern equivalent: You can still pick up variations of the 100-in-1 kits, but their popular replacement seem to be Snap Circuits by Elenco. All of the components are mounted on a plastic base with a contact on either end which interconnect with each other and the plastic base that projects can be mounted to. Each component also has the electrical diagram symbol for that component drawn on it so it can help you read schematics. For that reason alone, I like these better. • How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance. Edit: Thanks for the information. • How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps. • proxychained browser unable to open files

  Ubuntu 10.10, Midori 0.3.2 browser (same problem with Epiphany 2.30.2, Chrome 11.0.686.1 dev; haven't tried with Firefox as yet) Proxychains-3.1 installed, working fine. Here is the deal: when NOT proxychained, Midori or Epiphany can download and open a file (e.g. PDFs from a Google search) in Evince without problem. But when proxychained, neither browser can open PDF files. The message is, "file xxx downloaded". Then it tries to open the file, an indication appears in the status bar, the turning wheel appears, and then nothing. Evince doesn't open. Whats going on here? In both cases (with and without proxychains) files are downloaded to the /tmp folder. They have the same file permissions and ownership. Whats different when proxychained? Why can't the files be opened and why are there no error messages or notifications. Why the silent failure? I don't want to use FF or Chrome. Chrome does not follow my GTK2 customizations and FF is just too resource heavy. Please help.

  In Web Applications, we often come across requirement of sending and receiving emails through our application. So same can be for the applications hosted on Azure. So Do you want to send email from an application hosted on Azure? CloudMail is one of the possible answers. CloudMail is designed to provide a small, effective and reliable solution for sending email from the Azure platform directly addressing several problems that application developers face. Microsoft does not provide an SMTP Gateway (yet) so the application is forced to connect directly to one hosted somewhere else, on another network. So to implement such functionality one of the possible option is using Free email providers. This might be fine for testing, but do you really want to rely on a free service in production? There can be other issues with this approach like if your chosen SMTP gateway is down or there are connection problems? Again there can be some specific requirement that, you want to send email via a company’s mail server, from inside their firewall. CloudMail solves these problems by providing a small client library that you can use in your solution to send emails from you application and a Windows Service that you run inside your companies network that acts as a relay. • Access Control Service: Home Realm Discovery (HRD) Gotcha

  I really like ACS2. One feature that is very useful is home realm discovery. ACS provides a Nascar style list as well as discovery based on email addresses. You can take control of the home realm selection process yourself by downloading the JSON feed or by manually setting the home realm parameter. Plenty of options – the only option missing is turning it off… In other words, when you setup your ACS namespace and realm and register identity provider, there is no way to keep the list of identity providers secret. An interested “user” can always retrieve all registered identity provider (using the browser or download the JSON feed). This may not be an issue with web identity providers, but when you use ACS to federate with customers or business partners, you maybe don’t want to disclose that list to the public (or to other customers). This is an adoption blocker for certain situations. I hope this feature will be added soon. In addition I would also like to see a feature I call “home realm aliases”. Some random string that I can use as a whr parameter instead of using the real issuer URI.
