• Nautilus will not launch after update to 12.10

  I updated to Ubuntu 12.10 today from 12.04 using the graphical update tool. Everything seemed to be fine until I went to open Nautilus, and it would not open. Bizarrely, I am able to open a file that I happen to have on my desktop, but when I click on the launcher, it never opens. When I enter 'nautilus' in the terminal, I get this: (nautilus:8557): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_display_get_xdisplay: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) nautilus I am not a total novice with ubuntu or linux, but all I can tell is that there is some problem with X. Can someone please point me in the right direction as far as fixing this? I really don't want to have to do a fresh install. Thank you very much.

• SEO optimization for AJAX site and dynamic HTML canvas

  I have a site that uses AJAX to query the Last.fm database and then dynamically draws a graph of the results on an HTML canvas. In the search function, I have a command that sets window.location.hash to the search parameters. I also have a function that checks if a hash was provided in the url and if so, generates the page. For example, http://www.thenlistento.com/#!/led+zeppelin will automatically navigate to a search page for Led Zeppelin. My question is, how do optimize this set up for SEO? Can it be done at all? I've taken a look at Google Webmaster Docs and read over the hashbang protocol, but I'm not totally sure how to apply it to my situation..or even if I can at all. • Derive a algorithm to match best position

  I have pieces in my game which have stats and cost assigned to them and they can only be placed at a certain location. Lets say I have 50 pieces. e.g. Piece1 = 100 stats, 10 cost, Position A. Piece2 = 120 stats, 5 cost, Position B. Piece3 = 500 stats, 50 cost, Position C. Piece4 = 200 stats, 25 cost, Position A. and so on.. I have a board on which 12 pieces have to be allocated and have to remain inside the board cost. e.g. A board has A,B,C ... J,K,L positions and X Cost assigned to it. I have to figure out a way to place best possible piece in the correct position and should remain within the cost specified by the board. Any help would be appreciated.

• Physics engine that can handle multiple attractors?

  I'm putting together a game that will be played mostly with three dimensional gravity. By that I mean multiple planets/stars/moons behaving realistically, and path plotting and path prediction in the gravity field. I have looked at a variety of physics engines, such as Bullet, tokamak or Newton, but none of them seem to be suitable, as I'd essentially have to re-write the gravity engine in their framework. Do you know of a physics engine that is capable of dealing with multiple bodies all attracted to one another? I don't need scenegraph management, or rendering, just core physics. (collision detection would be a bonus, as would rigid body dynamics). My background is in physics, so I would be able to write an engine that uses Verlet integration or RK4 (or even Euler integration, if I had to) but I'd much rather adapt an off the shelf solution. • Graphics Driver problem, ATI Radeon HD 3200, small screen size and slows everything down.

  Regards. I am using a: 2009 Compaq Presario CQ40-415AU Notebook AMD Athlon X2 Dual core Processor 2.1 GHz 1024 MB L2 cache 3GB DDR2 RAM ATI Radeon + HD 3200 Graphics 256 MB, screen is 14 inch widescreen with resolution of 1280*800. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit on my laptop. It works brilliantly until I installed graphics driver. When I installed the driver, the graphics became slow. Everything slowed down. Even the splash screen resolution changed to something like 640*480. I have liked Ubuntu since 9.10 and for the freedom it provides and its versatility, but graphics problem remains the same. I even installed Ubuntu on a 50 GB partition with 6 GB swap partition. My HDD is 320 GB. Please tell me what is wrong.

• File Transfer using RDP

  I often use RDP to log into servers.   A couple of issues I have had is that its a pain to get files onto the server from my PC at times, and, if there is something missing from the servers windows install, I can’t simply pop the DVD into remote server in some unknown location on the internet somewhere. The other day I was curious if RDP actually had anything…since it did support shared clipboards, so I went for a look through the options and low and behold, *hidden* away….. Select Options… Go to the “Local Resources” Tab, then where it has “Local devices and resources” it sneakily has a “More…” button. Which then displays a drive selection box.  Select the drive you want …. Then on your server you will get….. Nice.  That is useful.

• First time shadow mapping problems

  I have implemented basic shadow mapping for the first time in OpenGL using shaders and I'm facing some problems. Below you can see an example of my rendered scene: The process of the shadow mapping I'm following is that I render the scene to the framebuffer using a View Matrix from the light point of view and the projection and model matrices used for normal rendering. In the second pass, I send the above MVP matrix from the light point of view to the vertex shader which transforms the position to light space. The fragment shader does the perspective divide and changes the position to texture coordinates. What I have tried is enabling polygon offset (i.e. glEnable(POLYGON_OFFSET_FILL), glPolygonOffset(GLfloat, GLfloat) ) but it didn't change much. As you see in the fragment shader, I have put a static offset value of 0.001 but I have to change the value depending on the distance of the light to get more desirable effects , which not very handy. I also tried using front face culling when I render to the framebuffer, that didn't change much too. The other problem is that pixels outside the Light's view frustum get shaded. The only object that is supposed to be able to cast shadows is the crate. I guess I should pick more appropriate projection and view matrices, but I'm not sure how to do that. What are some common practices, should I pick an orthographic projection? From googling around a bit, I understand that these issues are not that trivial. Does anyone have any easy to implement solutions to these problems. Could you give me some additional tips? Please ask me if you need more information on my code. • How do I install sensors-applet?

  I want to install sensors-applet onto my Ubuntu 12.04 computer. The instructions on this (and other) webpages says to enter this command in a command terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet This is a gnome applet and gnome isn't exactly obscure. Why can sensors-applet package not be found? Before you say "no", note that I was able to execute "gnome-panel" to add a bar/panel along the bottom of my desktop, add 8 cpu-frequency applets to the bar (one per CPU core), and add gnome-panel to my startup applications. So I've already done the basics, and believe all I need now is to be able to download and install the sensors-applet to have that temperature applet available on the panel too. See here.

• 12.04 Epson Scanner will not install dependency not met

  I'm trying to install Epson V100 scanner in 12.04. I downloaded files from Epson: iscan_2.29.1-5~usb0.1.ltdl7_amd64.deb iscan_2.29.1-5~usb0.1.ltdl3_amd64.deb iscan-plugin-gt-s600_2.1.2-1_amd64.deb from Ubuntu Software Center via double click on the file or from the terminal "dependencies not met" error occurs. What can I do. Apparently 12.04 is not able to process these files. Does anyone know where I can download older versions of the above files. I can not access avasys.jp from my location in China.

• Upcoming User Group Events in 2011

  At a recent customer event, someone asked me if Oracle had any plans to re-create the Hyperion Solutions Conference.  Unfortunately the answer is no.  With so many different product lines it would be challenging and costly for Oracle to run separate user conferences for every product line, and it would create too many events for customers with multiple products to attend.  So Oracle Open World is the company's main event for showcasing what's new and what's coming across all product lines.  If customers find Oracle OpenWorld too overwhelming or if the timing is bad, there are a number of other conferences, which are run by Oracle user groups and include a number of sessions focused on Oracle Hyperion EPM and BI products.  Here's a sneak preview of what's coming up for conferences in 2011 where you can network with other Hyperion users and learn what's new and what's coming in our products. • Build a custom Ubuntu based distribution

  I am working on making a custom Ubuntu 11.10 based distro.(64 bit) I am adding non open source packages, replacing packages, changed user interface from Unity to GNOME, and more changes. My system is ready, and I want to create a redistributable image for my distro. When you go to system settings - system info, you see a logo with the Ubuntu name and logo, but I want to change it to the name and logo of my distro. Also, in the boot menu, I want to change the boot entry names, and the GRUB background. And I want to change the name Ubuntu from every possible location. Also, I will be sharing it with people, so I want to make my own software repositories, like linux mint has, or any other distro has, I will purchase server space for that. Also, the I want to customize the wubi installer like linux mint did and if some uses the customized tool to install my distro from Windows, they should see the name of my distro in add or remove programs page. Any help will be appreciated!

• Are there any non-english programming languages? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Non-English-based programming languages Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I'm going to anyway. Without fail, every programming language I've ever seen, used or heard of has it's keywords based around English. if, else, while, for, query, foreach, image, path, extension, the list goes on, are all based around English words. Are there any languages, or ports of languages that base their core keywords based on non-english words to lower the wall for non-english speaking programmers? This is mostly for intrest (English is my first language so it's no problem for me). Are these languages popular locally (I.E. might a software development house in Germany use a programming language based in German over one based in English).

• Purple Screen then Black Screen while Booting from CD or Windows Install

  Whenever I try to run Ubuntu from my internal CD drive, I see this screen minus the Ubuntu Text: Then the screen goes black, not even the internal light stays on. Sometimes it restarts itself, other times the black screen is indefinite until I restart the laptop myself. I'm on an HP Quad-Core AMD A8-3500M APU with 8 GB RAM and a Radeon AMD 6620g Discrete-Graphics Card. (HP dv6-6145dx) This is my first time using Linux, I am not too technically-inclined so any simplification would be welcomed. I am good at following technical instructions though which is how I was able to partition my hard drive and change the boot order to allow the internal CD drive first. Thanks in advance!

  I have a Dell Inspiron 3521 with hybrid ATI/Intel graphics. (AMD Radeon 7670M / Intel HD 4000) using Ubuntu 14.04 with open source drivers for graphics. (xserver-xorg-video-ati) I read that Ubuntu 14.04 with the linux kernel version 3.13 supports auto switching between graphics and dynamic power management. Is it correct? Anyway, if it is true, I dont think that it is working in my system , because fan runs constantly and battery backup is less than 2 hours. lspci | grep -i vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
