• WCF with MANY database connections

  I'm working in the development of an ERP type .Net WinForms application consuming a WCF service. It's to be used by many small companies (in the range of 100-200). Database is SQL Server 2008 and the service will be hosted as a Windows service. Even thought there will be a single DB Server, our customer insists in having separate databases for each company. That is because of stability/support concerns (like DB being damaged or took offline for some reason thus affecting all clients). Concerns coming from previous experiences (not necessarily with same platform). With a single database, connections to the DB would be opened at service start up and pooling used, but, I'm not sure how connections could be managed in a multiple DB scenario: Could a connection to the corresponding DB be opened and closed for each service request? would performance be acceptable? If a connection is opened and maintained for each company accessing the system, what's the practical limit of opened connections (to different databases)? It would be very interesting to hear your opinions and suggestions for this situation. Tanks

• Updating database row from model

  Hey everyone, I'm haing a few problems updating a row in my database using Linq2Sql. Inside of my model I have two methods for updating and saving from my controller, which in turn receives an updated model from my view. My model methods like like: public void Update(Activity activity) { _db.Activities.InsertOnSubmit(activity); } public void Save() { _db.SubmitChanges(); } and the code in my Controller likes like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(Activity activity) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { UpdateModel<Activity>(activity); _activitiesModel.Update(activity); _activitiesModel.Save(); } return View(activity); } The problem I'm having is that this code inserts a new entry into the database, even though the model item i'm inserting-on-submit contains a primary key field. I've also tried re-attaching the model object back to the data source but this throws an error because the item already exists. Any pointers in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.   Hi I am trying to get a cookie from a site which I can do no problem. • Access problems with IIS 7 and a WCF service

  I have a Silverlight app that calls a WCF service, the service calls some stored procedures in an SQL db using Visual Studio 2008's Link to SQL class and returns the information to whatever called it. I have set up the compiled project (website with embedded app and the WCF service) on an remote IIS 7 server. I recompiled my local copy to use the WCF service that is now hosted on the IIS box and not the one on the local dev server that Visual Studio provides, if I use the local version of the website (hosted on the dev server, and using the remote SCF service) it is able to make calls it needs and display the information. However, if I use the website that is being hosted by the remote IIS server, the app will not get the information it needs from the service. On the IIS server I have the application pool and the website running under my credentials, which have access to the database. Users connecting to the webpage use anonymous authentication. Any ideas as to why I can only access the service when running from the dev server and not through the remotely hosted webpage are appreciated. If anything needs clarification, please ask.

• How to access widgets created within functions in later function calls in Qt

  So currently I have code, in C++, that creates a few QLabels, a QLineEdit, and a QCheckBox when a selection is made from a QComboBox. However, I would like to be able to access the widgets I have created in a later function to destroy them if a new selection is made from the combo box. I am able to access the objects created from using the Designer by doing ui-Object but i am not able to do that with objects created by using my own code. Can I do that some how, because I know how to work with that. In short, I would like to be able to dynamically create/destroy QWidgets based on selections made by the user. Is there a reference I should know of to do this, or any documentation? Or am I just completely going about this the wrong way? • Connecting to database suddenly started throwing exception for my website

  I have an MVC3 application hosted by third party hosting provider. The site has been running well for the past 3 months without any problems. Today suddenly the Application started throwing following Exception as recorded in my logs part of which is shown below. System.Data.ProviderIncompatibleException: The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string. --- System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The message is self explanatory and I first thought I should increase the connect timeout, but then the exception was still thrown suggesting the other part (Server Not Responding). I contacted my hosting provider and he said there was nothing wrong on his part. So I am stuck with a down website and don't know what to do. Any ideas why the provider is throwing the exception listed above. Also, is it possible for me to remotely connect to the database on the hosting server with limited authority. Any tools for that ? I don't have an exposure in database subject, except for application programming. regards, Nirvan

  Hey there, Here is my dillema... I have a directory full of .txt comma delimited files arranged as shown below. What I want to do is to import each of these into a SQL or SQLite database, appending each one below the last. (1 table)... I am open to C# or VB scripting and just not sure how to accomplish this. I want to only extract and import the data starting BELOW the 'Feat. Type,Feat. Name, etc' line. These are stored in a \mynetwork\directory\stats folder on my network drive. Ideally I will be able to add functionality that will make the software/script know not to re-add the file to the database once it has already done so as well. • Entering Content Into A MySQL Database Via A Form

  I've been working on creating a form that submits content into my database but I decided that rather than using a drop down menu to select the date I'd rather use a textfield. • Locking database edit by key name

  I need to prevent simultaneous edits to a database field. Users are executing a push operation on a structured data field, so I want to sequence the operations, not simply ignore one edit and take the second. Essentially I want to do synchronized(key name) { push value onto the database field } and set up the synchronized item so that only one operation on "key name" will occur at a time. (note: I'm simplifying, it's not always a simple push). A crude way to do this would be a global synchronization, but that bottlenecks the entire app. All I need to do is sequence two simultaneous writes with the same key, which is rare but annoying occurrence. This is a web-based java app, written with Spring (and using JPA/MySQL). The operation is triggered by a user web service call. (the root cause is when a user sends two simultaneous http requests with the same key). I've glanced through the Doug Lea/Josh Bloch/et al Concurrency in Action, but don't see an obvious solution. Still, this seems simple enough I feel there must be an elegant way to do this.

• Performance of inter-database query (between linked servers)

  I have an import between 2 linked servers. I basically got to get the data from a multiple join into a table on my side. The current query is something like this: select a.* from db1.dbo.tbl1 a inner join db1.dbo.tbl2 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl3 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl4 on ... inner join db2.dbo.myside on ... db1 = linked server db2 = my own database After this one, I am using an insert into + select to add this data in my table which is located in db2. (usually few hundred records - this import running once a minute) My question is related to performance. The tables on the linked server (tbl1, tbl2, tbl3, tbl4) are huge tables, with millions of records, and it is slowing down the import process. I was told that, if I do the join on the "other" side (db1 - linked server) for example in a stored procedure, than, even if the query looks the same, it would run faster. Is that right? This is kinda hard to test. Note that the join contains a table from my database too. Also. are there other "tricks" I could use in order to make this run faster? Thanks

• Loading GWT Messages from a Database

  In GWT one typically loads i18n strings using a interface like this: public interface StatusMessage extends Messages { String error(String username); : } which then loads the actual strings from a StatusMessage.property file: error=User: {0} does not have access to resource This is a great solution, however my client is unbendable in his demand for putting the i18n strings in a database so they can be changed at runtime (though its not a requirement that they be changed realtime). One solution is to create a async service which takes a message ID and user locale and returns a string. I have implemented this and find it terribly ugly (and it introduces a huge amount of extra communication with the server, plus it makes property placeholder replacement rather complicated). So my question is this, can I in some nice way implement a custom message provider that loads the messages from the backend in one big swoop (for the current user session). If it can also hook into the default GWT message mechanism, then I would be completely happy (i.e. so I can create a interface like above and keep using the the nice {0}, {1}... property replacement format). Other suggestions for clean database driven messages in GWT are also welcome.

• SQL Binary Microsoft Access - Combining two tables if specific field values are equal

  I am new to Microsoft Access and SQL but have a decent programming background and I believe this problem should be relatively simple. I have two tables that I have imported into Access. I will give you a little context. One table is huge and contains generic, global data. The other table is still big but contains specific, regional data. There is only one common field (or column) between the two tables. Let’s call this common field CF. The other fields in both tables are different. I’ll take you through one iteration of what I need to do. I need to take each CF value in the regional, smaller table and find the common CF value in the larger, global table. After finding the match, I need to take the whole “record” or “row” from the global data and copy it over to the corresponding record in the smaller regional table (This should involve creating the new fields). I need to do this for all CF values in the regional, smaller table. I was recommended to use SQL and a binary search, but I am unfamiliar. Let me know if you have any questions. Something pretty important (and probably basic) is missing the the thought process but after spending a weekend on google and in books I give up and turn to the SO community.

• Connecting a django application to a drupal database?

  I have a 3 - 4000 nodes in a drupal 6 installation on mysql and want to access these data through my django application. I have used manage.py inspectdb to get a skeleton of a model structure. I guess that there are good/historical reasons for drupal's database schemes, but find that there are some hard to understand structure and that there are some challenges in applying django models on the database. Some experiences this far are: node and node revision are intertwined and I solved this by using a OneToOneField (don't need the versions). This meens that the node's body gets accessible through node.vid.body, but it works. Foreign keys need to define the proper db_column to sort out the primary keys. Terms need to use an intermediary table with ManyToManyField.through. Drupal stores both the original and the thumbnailed/resized versions of any image as files in the files table. Does anyone have experiences in accessing drupal data in django? Are there better solution to for example the node <- node revision relationship? Drupal stores time/dates as unix-style timestamps in integerfields. Any recommendations? How about time zones?

  Here's what I need to setup...and I am not well versed in PHP/SQL...but this is what I'm trying to do. On the New User database, I will have a section where they can have information sent to their phone using the provider's default e-mail to text msg (i.e. [email protected].) New User: Input number: ______________(2225551212 format, no hyphens, etc.) Select Provider: (Drop-down menu with proper @provider.ext...) Then the formmail, when sent, if for specific user will get ($phone".@."$provider); or something like that and send a preset message like: $user."requested information on ".$product."on".$date." at ".$time."."; Is this possible? The $user, $product, $date, $time all are generated directly from the most recent input page for a database. Is this possible? Please help!

  I am trying to create and array of objects so that I can access them in a for loop in jQuery and I know that this works in Actionscript so what I am trying to do is convert my current knowledge to jQuery that will work.   For some reason, I can't get embedded firebird sql to work on Windows using C#/.NET. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B) I'm very new to SQL and Firebird in general, so I'm not sure how to resolve this issue. Anyone?
