• What can cause Windows to unhook a low level (global) keyboard hook?

  We have some global keyboard hooks installed via SetWindowsHookEx with WH_KEYBOARD_LL that appear to randomly get unhooked by Windows. We verified that they hook was no longer attached because calling UnhookWindowsHookEx on the handle returns false. (Also verified that it returns true when it was working properly) There doesn't seem to be a consistent repro, I've heard that they can get unhooked due to timeouts or exceptions getting thrown, but I've tried both just letting it sit on a breakpoint in the handling method for over a minute, as well as just throwing a random exception (C#) and it still appears to work. In our callback we quickly post to another thread, so that probably isn't the issue. I've read about solutions in Windows 7 for setting the timeout higher in the registry because Windows 7 is more aggressive about the timeouts apparently (we're all running Win7 here, so not sure if this occurs on other OS's) , but that doesn't seem like an ideal solution. I've considered just having a background thread running to refresh the hook every once in a while, which is hackish, but I don't know of any real negative consequences of doing that, and it seems better than changing a global Windows registry setting. Any other suggestions or solutions? The delegates are not being GC'd since they're static members, which is one cause that I've read about.

Not sure if this is the correct way to use SO, but here it goes: Now it is possible delegate OpenID to your Google account (not Google Apps). No, this is not using the demo OpenID provider using App Engine. This is your REAL Google account! First you need to enable your Google Profiles. Try to view your profile and edit it, there should be an option to set your Profile URL. You have two choices there: either use your Gmail account name (without the @gmail.com part) as your profile id, or a random number assigned to you. It's up to you to decide which one to use. Either way, that id is your profile id below. • Can't create an OgreBullet Trimesh

  I'm using Ogre and Bullet for a project and I currently have a first person camera set up with a Capsule Collision Shape. I've created a model of a cave (which will serve as the main part of the level) and imported it into my game. I'm now trying to create an OgreBulletCollisions::TriangleMeshCollisionShape of the cave. The code I've got so far is this but it isn't working. It compiles but the Capsule shape passes straight through the cave shape. Also I have debug outlines on and there are none being drawn around the cave mesh. • full duplex communication over the web w/o flash sockets

  A web application I'm helping to develop is faced with a well-known problem: we want to be able to let users know of various events and so forth that can occur at any time, essentially at random, and update their view accordingly. Essentially, we need to allow the server to push requests to individual clients, as opposed to the client asking the server. I understand that WebSockets are an effort to address the problem; however, after a bit of looking around into them, I understand that a) very few web browsers currently offer native websocket support; b) to get around this, you either use flash sockets or some sort of AJAX long-polling; c) a special websockets server must be used. Now, we want to offer our service without Flash. And any sort of servers must have some sort of load-balancing capabilities, or at least some software that can do load balancing for them. As of 2008, everyone was saying that Comet-based solutions (e.g., Bayeux) were the way to go for these sort of situations. However, the various protocols seem to have not had much work put into them since then—which leads (finally) to the question. Is Bayeux-flavored Comet still the right tool for jobs like this? If not, what is?

  I have googled but I can't find answers for these questions. Your advice is appreciated. centOS on vps with 512MB RAM, nginx, php5 (fastcgi), mysql5 (myisam, not innodb). I need to optimize this app created by some ex-employee. This app is working, but it's slow. Table: t1(id[bigint(20)],c1[mediumtext],c2[mediumtext],c3[mediumtext],c4[mediumtext]) id is some random big number, and is PK Those mediumtext rows look like this: c1="|box-002877|" c2="|ct-2348|rd-11124854|hw-3949|wd-8872|hw-119037736|...etc.. " c3="|fg-2448|wd-11172|hw-1656|...etc.. " c4="|hg-2448|qd-16667|...etc." (some columns contain a lot of data, around 900 KiB, database around 300 MiB) Yes, mediumtext "is bad", and (20) is too big... but I didn't create this. Those codes can be found on any of those 4 mediumtext's... //he needs all the columns of the row containing $code, so he wrote this: function f1($code) { SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c1 LIKE '%$code%' OR c2 LIKE '%$code%' OR c3 LIKE '%$code%' OR c4 LIKE '%$code%'; Questions: Q1. That query can be cached by mysql (if using a big query_cache_size=128M value on the my.cnf)? or that's not cacheable due to the mediumtexts, or due to the "OR LIKE"...? Q4. • Use iconv API in C

  I try to convert a sjis string to utf-8 using the iconv API. I compiled it already succesfully, but the output isn't what I expected. • looking for a license key algorithm.

  There are alot of questions relating to license keys asked on stackoverflow. But they don't answer this question. Can anyone provide a simple license key algorithm that is technology independent and doesn't required a diploma in mathematics to understand ? The license key algorithm is similar to public key encryption. I just need something simple that can be implemented in any platform .Net/Java and uses simple data like characters. Written as Pseudo code is perfect. So if a person presents a string, a complementary string can be generated that is the authorisation code. Below is a common scenario that it would be used for. Customer downloads s/w which generates a unique key upon initial startup/installation. S/w runs during trial period. At end of trial period an authorisation key is required. Customer goes to designated web-site, enters their code and get authorisation code to enable s/w, after paying :) Don't be afraid to describe your answer as though you're talking to a 5 yr old as I am not a mathemtician.

• Custom UIButton for Iphone.

  I have an view in my App which has a number of buttons based on the number of items returned by the server. So if the server returns say 10 items, there should be 10 buttons and clicking on each button should call a different person. • How does MSN filter spam?

  I am trying to create a newsletter for our business. The last few days have been spent testing, and one of things I have noticed is that MSN seemingly randomly filters out some of my test messages. This is super-frustrating. I like the PEAR Mail MIME-package, and have been using that. I may send one email from one of our servers, resulting in the message getting through, and in the next minute, the same message sent from our other server ends up in the junk folder. Then if I add an attachment to the email, and the same message passes though the filter from the server that was previously blocked. I think. What the ####? Is this like throwing a dice, without me having any control over what is trash, and what isn't? I have sent email from several servers, all of which are shared. But I am unsure this is the problem. The problem is that it is seemingly random how MSN filters email. Some emails get through, and some other don't for seemingly irrational reasons. I am running out of ideas, but I am not giving up. Therefore I am writing to you for HARDCORE technical info on how MSN filters spam.

• Sharepoint designer is replacing french characters with &#65533;

  First of all, I'm not a web designer, I'm a programmer, so I'm working a bit out of my knowledge area. However, as the person in my office who has some working knowledge of French, I'm stuck with this issue. The Problem: Sharepoint Designer is replacing all French accented characters with the &#65533; (square box or diamond-? �) character. It doesn't appear to matter if I enter the 'é' character as alt-130 (in either design or source or as &eacute; Everything works fine when editing, but when the file is saved and loaded into a browser, it replaces the characters. When reloading into designer, the file shows the 65533 symbol. EDIT: More info. I use &#233; and save, close SP designer, Reloading SP designer will show the é (instead of the code) in source. Next reload will have replaced it with &#65533; Question 1: (more important) HOW DO I STOP THIS!? Question 2: (more interesting) Why does this happen? Charset is iso-8859-1

• Programming Technique: How to create a simple card game

  Hi, As I am learning the Ruby language, I am getting closer to actual programming. So I was thinking of creating a simple card game. My question isn't Ruby orientated, but I do know want to learn how to solve this problem with a genuine OOP approach. In my card game I want to have four players. Using a standard deck with 52 cards, no jokers/wildcards. In the game I won't use the Ace as a dual card, it is always the highest card. So, the programming problems I wonder about are the following: How can I sort/randomize the deck of cards? There are four types, each having 13 values. Eventually there can be only unique values, so picking random values could generate duplicates. How can I implement a simple AI? As there are tons of card games, someone would have figured this part out already, so references would be great. I am a truly Ruby nuby, and my goal here is to learn to solve problems, so pseudo code would be great, just to understand how to solve the problem programmatically. I apologize for my grammar and writing style if it's unclear, for it is not my native language. Also pointers to sites where such challenges are explained, would be a great resource! • php remove button keeps retreiving posted information

  Hi every1! im quickly finding im quite the beginner to php, so please bare with me! I have a quick problem, I have a remove button for a shopping cart and the code works for it everytime except for the last product thats in the cart. If a person pushes the addtoCart button the URL is reloaded with ?buyproduct=$productNumber and when the remove button is pushed the product is removed. Right so everything is good, but when you try to remove the last item, it keeps reading the product thats in the URL. so the quantity remains 1 for the current $productNumber. i've tried adding the action in the form method tag so that the page reloads without the ?buyproduct=$productNumber, which does work however there are page numbers and sections that were also in the URL and these get reset also. i know the remove is working because once the ?buyproduct=$productNumber is gone from the URL (which can happen for example if they go to another section in the catalog) then the cart can be completely emptied. • Should we have a database independent SQL like query language in Django? [closed]

  Note : I know we have Django ORM already that keeps things database independent and converts to the database specific SQL queries. Once things starts getting complicated it is preferred to write raw SQL queries for better efficiency. When you write raw sql queries your code gets trapped with the database you are using. I also understand its important to use the full power of your database that can-not be achieved with the django orm alone. My Question : Until I use any database specific feature, why should one be trapped with the database. For instance : We have a query with multiple joins and we decided to write a raw sql query. Now, that makes my website postgres specific. Even when I have not used any postgres specific feature. I feel there should be some fake sql language which can translate to any database's sql query. Even Django's ORM can be built over it. So, that if you go out of ORM but not database specific - you can still remain database independent. I asked the same question to Jacob Kaplan Moss (In person) : He advised me to stay with the database that I like and endure its whole power, to which I agree. But my point was not that we should be database independent. My point is we should be database independent until we use a database specific feature. Please explain, why should be there a fake sql layer over the actual sql ?

• Comparing RPG to C# and SQL.

  In an RPG program (One of IBM's languages on the AS/400) I can "chain" out to a file to see if a record (say, a certain customer record) exists in the file. If it does, then I can update that record instantly with new data. If the record doesn't exist, I can write a new record. The code would look like this: Customer Chain CustFile 71 ;turn on indicator 71 if not found if *in71 ;if 71 is "on" eval CustID = Customer; eval CustCredit = 10000; write CustRecord else ;71 not on, record found. CustCredit = 10000; update CustRecord endif Not being real familiar with SQL/C#, I'm wondering if there is a way to do a random retrieval from a file (which is what "chain" does in RPG). Basically I want to see if a record exists. If it does, update the record with some new information. If it does not, then I want to write a new record. I'm sure it's possible, but not quite sure how to go about doing it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Version control for PHP Developement

  Hello, I have been hearing a lot about the advantages of using a version control system and would like to try one. I was doing freelance web development in PHP for the past 2 years, two months back I hired two more programmer to help me. I will be hiring one more person soon. We maintain 4 websites, all of which are my own, which are continuously being edited by one of us. I learned PHP by myself and have never worked in any other firms. Hence I am new to version control, unit testing and all. Currently, we have development servers on our workstations. When we edit a particular section of a site, we download the code for that particular section (say /news/ or /movies/ or /wallpapers/ ) from the production server to the dev server, makes the changes locally and uploads to the production server (no code review / testing). Because of this, our dev server is always out of date from our prod server. Occasionally, this also create problem when one of us forgets to download the latest copy from prod and overwrites the last change. I know this is very very foolish, but currently our prod server is the only copy that has all the updates and latest changes. Can anyone please suggest which is the best version control system for me? I am more interested in distributed version control, since we don't have a central backup for all our code. I read about Mercurial and Git and found that Mercurial is used in several large open source projects by Mozilla, Sun, Symbian etc. So which one do you think is better for me? Not only version control, if there are any other package that I can use to make my current setup better, please mention that too :) Thanks and Regards, Vinod Mohan

• x86_64 Assembly Command Line Arguments

  I'm new to assembly, and I just got familiar with the call stack, so bare with me. To get the command line arguments in x86_64 on Mac OS X, I can do the following: _main: sub rsp, 8 ; 16 bit stack alignment mov rax, 0 mov rdi, format mov rsi, [rsp + 32] call _printf Where format is "%s". rsi gets set to argv[0]. So, from this, I drew out what (I think) the stack looks like initially: top of stack <- rsp after alignment return address <- rsp at beginning (aligned rsp + 8) [something] <- rsp + 16 argc <- rsp + 24 argv[0] <- rsp + 32 argv[1] <- rsp + 40 ... ... bottom of stack And so on. Sorry if that's hard to read. I'm wondering what [something] is. After a few tests, I find that it is usually just 0. However, occasionally, it is some (seemingly) random number. EDIT: Also, could you tell me if the rest of my stack drawing is correct?

• Temporary debug releases and final application releases

  I have a quick question regarding debug and release in VS 2008. I have an app i've been working on - its not yet complete but the bulk of the functionality is there. So basically i'm trying to give a copy of it now to the person helping with documentation - just so they can have a play and get the feel for what i've made. Now the question is how to provide it to them. I was told to just copy the .exe out of the debug/bin folder and put that onto USB. But when testing, if I run this .exe anywhere else (outside of this folder) it crashes. I've now worked out why this is: var path = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["PathToUse"]; var files = Directory.GetFiles(path); throws a null reference, so that App.config file is not being used. If I copy that file in with the .exe it works again. So actually my question is regarding the best way to manage this situation. What is the best way to provide a working copy to people, and, is there a reference on preparing apps for release - so everything is packaged together and installed in a clean structured folder heirarchy?

• Tricky file parsing. Inconsistent Delimeters

  I need to parse a file with the following format. 0000000 ...ISBN.. ..Author.. ..Title.. ..Edit.. ..Year.. ..Pub.. ..Comments.. NrtlExt Nrtl Next Navg NQoH UrtlExt Urtl Uext Uavg UQoH ABS NEB MBS FOL ABE0001 0-679-73378-7 ABE WOMAN IN THE DUNES (INT'L ED) 1st 64 RANDOM 0.00 13.90 0.00 10.43 0 21.00 10.50 6.44 3.22 2 2.00 0.50 2.00 2.00 ABS The ID and ISBN are not a problem, the title is. There is no set length for these fields, and there are no solid delimiters- the space can be used for most of the file. Another issue is that there is not always an entry in the comments field. When there is, there are spaced within the content. So I can get the first two, and the last fourteen. I need some help figuring out how to parse the middle six fields. This file was generated by an older program that I cannot change. I am using php to parse this file.

I followed the instructions given on the node.js azure site: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/nodejs/ and using web installer 4.0 it says I have successfully installed these tools: Windows Azure Powershell Windows Azure SDK for Node.js - June 2012 Windows Azure SDK for .Net (VS 2012 RC) - June 2012 IIS Recommend Configuration The problem I am experiencing is that when I run the site using powershell e.g: start-azureemulator -launch it goes ahead and runs IIS Express, and after several minutes IIS Express crashes with the following information: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: iisexpress.exe Application Version: 8.0.8298.0 Application Timestamp: 4f620349 Fault Module Name: iiscore.dll Fault Module Version: 8.0.8298.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 4f63b65c Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00021767 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.28 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: f66d Additional Information 2: f66d807b515d6b2dc6f28f66db769a01 Additional Information 3: 7b2f Additional Information 4: 7b2f6797d07ebc2c23f2b227e779722e I am running 2 instances each time, and both of them crash one after the other. Is anyone experiencing something similar and fix this issue ? Is their an upgrade I need to do ? I've run windows update but it says I've got all the latest updates etc. Can I tell the powershell cmdlet to use IIS 7 instead of IIS Express? I'm guessing its something to do with IIS Express on my machine. I did some hunting around and found this person here who experienced a similar problem: https://github.com/tjanczuk/iisnode/issues/149 I've got a cron job running every 1 second, to check if any website totals need to be updated. Could this be causing IIS Express to crash? Cheers

• Inserting "null" (literally) in to a stored procedure parameter.

  I'm trying to insert the word "Null" (literally) in to a parameter for a stored procedure. For some reason SqlServer seems to think I mean NULL and not "Null". If I do a check for IF @LastName IS NULL // Test: Do stuff Then it bypasses that because the parameter isn't null. But when I do: INSERT INTO Person (<params>) VALUES (<stuff here>, @LastName, <more stuff here>); // LastName is 'Null' It bombs out saying that LastName doesn't accept nulls. I would seriously hate to have this last name, but someone does... and it's bombing the application. We're using SubSonic 2.0 (yeah, it's fairly old but upgrading is painful) as our DAL and stepping through it, I see it does create the parameters properly (for what I can tell). I've tried creating a temp table to see if I could replicate it manually but it seems to work just fine. Here is the example I create: DECLARE @myval VARCHAR(50) SET @myval = 'Null' CREATE TABLE #mytable( name VARCHAR(50)) INSERT INTO #mytable VALUES (@myval) SELECT * FROM #mytable DROP table #mytable Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

• Setting Parameters from another Parameter In SSRS

  I was able to get this working is SSRS 2008, but do to the fact that my company only has 2005 servers I need to downgrade the report to 2005. The idea is for a given person name there are two key fields EntityType and EntityId So I have a parameter from a dataset where the Label is the Name and the value is EntityType_EntityId I use the split function to take the left and right sides of from _ In 2008, I set the query parameters of the dataset to the split function and it works In 2005, I set the Default Value of each Report Parameters Now when I run the report and put textboxes showing the value of the parameters, the values are shown correctly but the query does not run. I am guessing that this is a lifecycle issue being Get Name Parameter Run Report THEN Set Parameters = Split of Name But the problem with that is the second time I run the report I should get result and I do not. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. I guess I can pass in the underscore delimted string to the stored procedure and parse it there, but my question is can this be done in the report? Reason being other callers will pass in the parameters as two seperate values.

  Dear all, One notion that has been prevalent mostly as rumours for many aspiring programmers is that the testing phase of the SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle) is not that challenging and interesting as one's job as a tester after a period of time becomes monotonous because a person does the same thing repeatedly over and over again. Thats why many have this complexion of looking for a developers job rather than that of testers. Don't testers have a space for themselves in software companies to grow..? Please feel free to express your views for or against this. How true is that, could you please give e.g.'s of instances( need not be practical, even theoretical would suffice) which actually contradict this statement wrt a tester's career specifically wrt the SAP domain. E.g.'s from other domains are also welcome. This question is not meant to hurt someone's feelings who is in the testing domain. Its just that for e.g. in my case I want to know what actually would be the challenge's a tester could also face in real life situations.Something that would make their job also interesting and fun-filled. I myself am pro-testing and also interested in pursuing testing as a profession in a sw co, just curious to know more about it so...:) Thanks..:)
