  • How does one programmatically download files from the web?

    How are files downloaded from servers in programming languages like C? I understand higher level languages have magic functions like "download_file_from_url()" but they don't help me understand what is actually going on. I'm a little familiar with sockets but network programming in general is still a black box to me. Thanks for any help.

  • Should I name the files in my solution all lowercase for SEO?

    I read that an SEO best practice is to use lowercase urls. Should I name my asp.net webforms project files lowercase as well? Visual Studio doesn't name default documents in new projects all lowercase. I'm not sure it matters since browsing to http://www.mysite.com/mypage.aspx will still work even if your page is named MyPage.aspx. Can somebody enlighten me on this?

    I am trying to create a blog using blogspot. It seems it is not possible to upload anything other than image files to blogspot. I want to upload a PHP file. I managed to upload the file to google sites, but it is coming as downloadable there instead of executing. Is there a work-around here other than buying my own server space?

  • Is there a static code analyzer [like Lint] for PHP files?

    Is there a static code analyzer for PHP files? The binary itself can check for syntax errors, but I'm looking for something that does more, like unused variable assignments, arrays that are assigned into without being initialized first, and possibly code style warnings. Open-source programs would be preferred, but we might convince the company to pay for something if it's highly recommended.

  • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

    I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works.   • Freebsd Secondary Group not allowing folder deletion

    TLDR: I have a user that is a member to a group as a secondary group. This user can delete files with 664 perms as a secondary user, but not directories with perms of 775. Details: I have a user. Lets call him ftpuser. I use him to upload and download files to my devbox. The user's primary group is "ftp" and is also in the group "www" as a secondary group. My web server runs as user www and group www, and I have proftpd (running as www and www) configured to drop all files into the needed directories as www and www (for file ownership) and perms 664 on files and 775 on directories. My problem is (tried with 2 ftp clients) the ftp client can delete the files, but not the folders. Filezilla returns 550 permission denied. The owner only can delete flag is not set, and I've triple checked the permissions and they are indeed 775. Its driving me nuts to have to log into my server to manually delete folders every time. Some of the folders and files are created by 1 of my php scripts, but the permissions are getting set properly when I check the files' properties. Directory and file creation works phenomenal. Can delete files, just not directories. Freebsd 9.0 Running in VirtualBox (32bit all the way around) Proftpd (running as www and www) as ftp server (tried using both dreamweaver and filezilla as the clients) Basic amp setup (apache,mysql,and php).

    I have some questions regarding generating keys for ssh access: (1) Supposed there are two computers running ssh server service and I have generated a pair of key files on computer A and copy the public file to computer B. Is it true that this is only a one-way key: We only gave computer A permission to access computer B, not gave computer B permission to access computer A? If I now want to ssh from computer B to computer A, must I generat another pair of key files on computer B and copy the public file to computer A? (2) If I would like to connect a single local computer to several remote servers, is it to generate a common pair of key files only once on the local and copy the same public file to the remote servers, or to generate different pair of key files on the local for different remote servers? (3) If I would like to connect several local computers to a single remote server, when copying the public files from different local computers to the remote server, is it to combine them together into a single authorized_keys file or store them in different authorized_keys files? (4) If there are several servers shared the same file system by, for example, NFS, how to generate keys and arrange the key files for accessing from one server to the other? Also how to still generate keys and arrange the key files for a local computer to access anyone of the servers? All the machines above are Linux.Please provide examples and commands in your reply so that I can better understand how to solve the problems. Thanks and regards!

I consider these OS X dot-files as useless turds of data as far as the rest of my network is concerned, and don't want to leave them on my Windows file server. Let's assume these dot-files will continue to happen. i.e. Think of the issue of getting OS X to stop creating those files, in the first place, to be another question altogether. Rather: How can I use Windows Explorer to find files that begin with a dot / period? I'd like to periodically search my file server and blow them away. I tried searching for files matching ".*" but that yielded – and not unexpectedly – all files and folders. Is there a way to enter more specific search criteria when searching in Windows Explorer? I'm referring to the search box that appears in the upper-right corner of an Explorer window. Please tell me there is a way to escape my query to do what I want? (Failing that, I know I can map a drive letter and drop into a cygwin prompt and use the UNIX 'find' command, but I'd prefer a shiny easy way.)

  • Permissions nightmare - tried all I know

    Working on a new client's dev site, which is a wordpress install on a Plesk box. I have SSH root access, and FTP access through a separate account. What I've done so far Initially I couldn't make any changes to any files at all. The permissions on all the template files looked a little screwy (644), so I figured change them to allow group, and add myself to the group: CHMOD Recursive on the theme folder to set everything to 664 Quickly realised I'd broken it, set the folders to 755, kept files as 664 Ownership on all files is a mixture of root:root and 500:500 (there is no user nor group with the ID of 500 on the server). Added myself to the group 'root' so I could modify the files too The Problem This worked OK, in terms of being able to edit the existing files, so I began working. However, I can't upload to the directory, even having run CHOWN -R root:root templatefolder/ and being in the root group. I feel like I must be missing something obvious, and it's doing my head in. Questions: Files in the install owned by 500 with group 500 - I've looked in /etc/group and /etc/passwd and there is no user nor group with this ID. Is that left over from another developer's setup or the previous server (they moved recently)? Is being in the 'root' group enough, or do I need to own the theme folder as 'myftpuser' in order to upload and create new files? Like I say, I have edit access, so I got myself this far. I'm now questioning what to do next!

    I need to recover data from quick-formatted DVD-R. Please advise a free of charge option (cheap commercial tools will be ok either). Disk was partially recorded with Windows built in disk recorder and recording most likely was not complete. Afterwards I have inserted partially recorded DVD again and on Windows recorder's message box 'How to use this disk?' selected - 'use for CD/DVD player' and data was completely lost - as new recording session was started. Files of photos were recorded on disk. What I have tried so far: DiskInternals CD-DVD recovery - sees 5 jpg files but can't show preview. Tool is commercial - trial version does not allow to recover files. CDCheck - doesn't see any files and reports errors at attempt to scand DVD CD Recovery Toolbox Free - does not even recognize DVD drive ISO Buster - recognizes two files - one MP3 file for 99% of recorded size and one ARC file for about 100 KB MiniTool Power Data Recovery - Free Edition - does not see any files on DVD Stellar Phoenix CD DVD Data Recovery - does not see any files BinaryBiz Virtual Lab - sees DVD disk but needs license to browse content Please advise how is it possible to recover files from DVD.

  • Explorer.exe hangup during move large file into external drive

    During move large files (700mb+) to external drive formated NTFS via USB 3.0 I've noticed strange things about explorer.exe (I am using Windows 7 up to date) Sometimes after move file the explorer get stuck (ie. it can happen after few files during move of several large files) - moving window freeze and I am unable to kill explorer (via taskmgr, or cmdline TASKKILL). In command line I've got something like this (taskmgr shows that explorer.exe is still running - I've got the same PID every time I try to kill it and no diagnostic message): C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. If I try to run another explorer.exe process at this point, I got desktop icon and start bar back but I cannot open any explorer window After few minutes explorer.exe finally dies and I am able to rerun it without rebooting File that I moved have two copies - one local and one on the external drive (the original file wasn't delete after move); Both copies seems to contain the same data (same length and CRC info) If this happen during move of multiply files, only some files are moved and one of them have two copies (both locally and on the external drive) What can I do to fix those explorer hangs? Added: The same problem exist when copying files, it hangsup between large files Similar problem exist when I tried to use TotalCommander (x64): copying paused at 80% of one of files, TC didn't hung up (but clicking cancel in copying dialog box doesn't have any effect).   • Why won't Media Monkey add one particular folder of mp3's?

    I'm using the latest and greatest version on Media Monkey (free version) and it won't find the mp3's in one particular folder in my music tree. It can see all the other files in the tree and the folder shows up when I click Add/Rescan files to the library... I have full control over the folder and all the files in the folder. The files play in Windows Media Player. The files play in Media Monkey if I right click and play from the context menu. All the tracks are at least 2 minutes long and over 5MB long and Media Monkey is set to ignore files shorter than 20KB and include all files regardless of length. There was an issue in that the that the genre of the tracks was set to "Classical" and the option that allows you to browse the classical music independently of the other music isn't enabled in the free version. It's a Gold version option only. I hadn't spotted that my other classical music was also missing from the library (I have rather a large library). Once I retagged the music with a different tag and tried to add the files again it reported that it added the tracks, but they still didn't show up in the library.

  • How could I embed formatted XML source in WORD documents?

    I'm writing a documentation with WORD that contains XML source code (whole files) as examples. The way I'm embedding the currently XML is quite cumbersome and doesn't seem to me as really maintainable: I'm finishing the editing of the document in WORD and create a PDF from it using Acrobat next, I open my XML files (2x input files, 2x generated output files) with IE and print them with the PDF printer supplied by Acrobat now, I open up Acrobat Pro and attach the four XML-PDF files to my original document The problem with that work flow for me is that it involves too much manual labor in order to get the documentation done. What I've tried up to now is not really satisfying for me: converting each XML to PDF and appending them like described above opening the XML files with SCiTE, copy as RTF and paste into Word playing around with the LaTeX packages minted, pygments and listings (I could write the docs with LaTeX too) but found some unsolvable problems in each of these packages I'm searching for a way that produces my documentation more automatic. For example embedding the XML files including formatting of IE (which I find quite readable). The files should be included by reference so that I don't have to paste the XML sources manually every time the XML changes.

  • NTFS 'Owner' missing when accessing hard disk from external USB adapter

    I have a hard drive with Windows XP SP3 installed on it. When the drive is connected through the standard SATA connector inside the laptop, everything works as expected. However when I remove the drive from the laptop and connect the drive to the external USB adapter, almost all files / folders lose the 'Owner' field contents. I was wondering why could that be. I've tried two USB adapters and this happens on each. I could take the ownership of all of the files, but this would overwrite the Owner value (the Owner value that is present when the drive is accessed through standard SATA connector in the laptop). //edit: if the hard drive is used through the USB adapter, I can't access most of the files, at least until I take ownership of the files (/folders). This is how it looks like: HDD inside USB adapter: HDD inside laptop: (note the Owner column) //edit: some of the files on the first screenshot have Owner field filled up. That's because I took the ownership of those files / folders to be able to access the files on the hard drive. //edit2: also, if the hard drive is connected through USB adapter and if I've took the ownership of some files by the 'ddd' user, then if i login as a different user (lets say 'eee' user), the owner field is _still_ empty: ddd user: eee user: eee user can't access the 'ddd' folder. Both users have Administrator priviledges.

  • Why is there no /usr/bin/ in windows? Would it be dangerous to the entire Program Files to the path?

    I am a Linux user spending some time in Windows and I'm trying to understand some of the Windows paradigms instead of fighting them. I notice that each program installed in the traditional manner (i.e. via orgasmic installers: Yes, Yes, Yes, Finish) adds the executables to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe and then adds a shortcut to the Desktop / Start Menu containing the entire path. However, there is no common directory with links to the software, i.e. C:/bin/bar.exe which would link to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe. Therefore, after installing an application the only way to use the application is via the clicky-clicky menus or by navigating to the executable in the filesystem. One cannot simply Win-R to open the run dialogue and then type bar or bar.exe as is possible with notepad or mspaint. I realize that Windows 8 improves on this with the otherwise horrendous Start Screen which does support typing the name of the app, but again this depends on the app having registered itself for such. Would I be doing any harm by adding C:/Program Files recursively to the Windows path? I do realize that there will be name collisions (i.e. uninstall.exe) but could there be other issues?
