• Server taking too long to respond error

  Hi, This is my first post on serverFault and my first entry in to web server configuration. The hardware and software. CPU: GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.el5 Memory: 2Gb Background. I am running a small database (MySQL), around 1000 records with each record containing 44 fields. At the start of each day “00:01” the tables are cleared and populated with fresh data. The are 10 remote PCs all running Winodws XP and Firefox internet browser. All remote PC’s are connected to the internet using a min 4Gb broadband connection. Each remote PC runs a URL which displays a dynamic page of data which is refreshed every 20 seconds. This is a continual process 24 hours a day. I problem I am having is on odd occasions throughout the day the PC browser error with “Server taking too long to respond error”. What I am trying to find our is if I have the correct setting in the httpd.conf file on the server. Any help or advice anyone can provide would be very helpful. • Using GPO to collect data about VMware view activity

  Our security group wants us to begin logging data for external access to our view enviroment. At first we thought that view security would be logging all source ip's that are external in nature so if for some reason there is an intrusion we would have record of it there. Of course our firewall logs all that information but correlating it to view is sketchy at best with our current implementation. We know on viewdesktops there is a set of keys in VolitateEnviroment that contains stuff such as source ip and username, etc. We have a script in place that, when run as a logon script attached to a user account in AD collects the information as we need it. If we have a GPO run the same script the information does not get collected. We feel like there is a piece of the puzzle we're missing but we don't know what. If anyone knows what we're forgetting or misconfiguring that would be great, or if you have a better way of us collecting external source ip's for view specifically we'd be interested in that as well. • One single page showing 3 requests (also printing the headers)

  Someone in my studio designed a webpage some years ago, and now the client decided to change the server (he moved to a Linux Apache server running Gen2 SMP, 64 bits, PHP version 5.3.8, Standard MYSQL version 5). It suddenly started to do weird things. When clicking on a link that requires login, the page redirects you to the login page using header() function in PHP. Curiously, the page shows this: OK The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [no address given] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. I've been checking the logs, and it only blames of an inexisting favicon. I also checked the .htaccess, everything was correct (RewriteBase was / as intended, and the only stuff there is another rule that moves ^en/ requests to request?lang=en. Has anyone faced something like this? Edit: IE doesn't trigger these two headers. This is getting wierder.

• Why can't I connect to my home SSH (SFTP) server? What am I doing wrong?

  I am new to this topic of creating a SFTP server on one's computer. I would like to be able to access the folder on my Windows XP computer via SFTP from another computer or a phone. The following is what I have done so far: I have installed SSH Windows and everything is setup correctly because I can access it (the folder on my pc) via WinSCP. I however cannot access it from my phone. It doesn't connect. The phone can be on the same wireless network as the Windows XP computer, but I would prefer to be able to access this when not in the same network. Now, from what I have read and understood, the following is the information needed to connect: 1) Host Name: This would be my computer's ip address which I access by typing ipconfig in a cmd prompt (I access this easily on my computer because I simply put in localhost or 127.0.0.1) 2) Port Number: That would be port 22 (I have also added this to my router in the port forwarding section). 3) Username: This would be my Windows XP username. This however is my full name, including my middle initial followed by a period. I am wondering if this is maybe causing problems in accessing it from my phone, since the name has spaces and punctuation (the period). 4) Password: The password of my Windows XP computer Extra Info: When I say phone, I mean an Android phone and I am using an ftp / sftp app to access my pc via the phone's cellular network (I also tried the wireless, but that didn't work as well). I have tried more than one program. On one program it tells me Connection timed out and on another it tells me "timeout:socket is not established" Also, I know that I can use the site noip, but I prefer to connect this way first. Also, because I am new to this, I would like to look into what exactly noip is doing and if they would be seeing my files as they are transferred from phone to pc. • Optimize Apache performance

  I'm looking for ways to optimize our current web server hosted in-house. I'm trying to supply as much relevant information below. Please let me know if you would require additional information in order to assist. Server is running 1 single website, which is an online pizza ordering platform built on Zend Framework (ver1). On traffic stats from the last month aprox 6.000 pageloads per day, concentrated mainly around dinnertime. Around 1500 loads/hour peaks in that period. We recently upgraded from a 2/2mbit aDSL-line to 100/100mbit fiber, and we still have performance issues at dinner time. We assumed the 2mbit was the issue. Website is pretty snappy in low-load periods. • Apache 2 settings for high traffic website

  I'm having problems with the load on my website. It's an amazon ec2 server with 15Gb ram and 4 CPUs behind an LB. apachetop says I'm getting around 80 reqs per second which seems really low for this kind of server and the load ( given by top ) is usually around 15 but does increase to about 150 in 24 hrs. I'm seeing about 100 active apache processes at any time. Apache is in prefork mode. Mysql is used very little on the server and there are almost no static files. Here are my Apache settings: Timeout 20 KeepAlive Off MaxKeepAliveRequests 0 KeepAliveTimeout 3 <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 40 MinSpareServers 25 MaxSpareServers 40 ServerLimit 400 MaxClients 400 MaxRequestsPerChild 4 </IfModule> Can anyone advise on how to tweak the settings? Thanx! Edit: The config was gotten by trial and error. Any and I mean by a number, change to these lines make the load skyrocket in like 5 minutes. It literally jumps to like 200-300 in a matter of minutes. Especially MaxRequestsPerChild. I've tried with 10, 15, 100, 1000 and the load just skyrockets. About php - there are actually only a few php files which aren't really that expensive at all. They just spit some simple stuff out. If I turn on KeepAlive load also goes to space..

• How to find the reason for a weekly downtime on an Ubuntu web server hosted by AWS?

  We started monitoring our web server using Pingdom and found out that we have a downtime of a few minutes every Sunday at 0:00 UTC. The test runs every minute and checks if a successful HTTP response (code 200) is returned on port 80. The test fails due to a timeout (no response after 30 seconds). Here's what we've already checked – without success: Since we run our webserver behind a load balancer, I've set the Pingdom test on the load balancer's public DNS and the webserver's public DNS in order to find out if there's a problem with the AWS load balancer – both tests return the same result We set up Munin on our webserver. Everything looked fine even after the failure. Since the last failure lasted only 2 minutes I suppose Munin couldn't capture a potential problem (it only checks every 5 minutes) I have checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and /var/log/syslog for suspicious entries I have checked /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/crontab for suspicious entries I have searched for files created or last-modified during 0:00 and 0:15 using this method: touch -t 201209020000 start touch -t 201209020015 end find / -newer start -and ! -newer end (nothing found) Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Any proposals on how to find the reason for this behavior? It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on an AWS m1.large instance. Thanks!

• SSL configuration issue. SSL/IIS7 not loading all scripts/CSS on user's first visit

  Hi all, Hopefully this isnt a tricky one. I've got a web app that doesn't load all javascript/css/images on the first visit. Second visit is fine. After approximately 2 minutes of inactivity the problem reoccurs. These problems only started occuring after the customer requested SSL be applied to the application. Ajax requests stop working after 2 minutes of activity despite a successful page load of all javascript elements. Application timeout is 30 minutes - like I said, everything was fine before SSL was applied. All javascript and CSS files use absolute URLS - e.g https://blablabla There appears to be no pattern as to why certain files arent loaded. The firebug Net output shows the status for the failed elements as 'Aborted'. For example, site.css and nav.css are in the same folder, are declared after each other in the head tag yet one is loaded and the other is not. Both will load fine after refreshing the page (unless roughly two minutes have passed). An Ajax request also shows as aborted after two minutes. However, if i do the request again the Ajax request will succeed. Almost as if the first request woke something up. None of these problems occur in Chrome Any ideas? FYI this is a .Net 4 C# MVC app running under IIS7 but I'm not sure its relevant since it works in Chrome. Everything worked fine before SSL was applied. • What ports, besides 80, need to be available to send (only send) email using phpmailer to gmail over SSL?

  Using phpmailer I keep getting a 110 timeout and "Unable to connect to host" when sending email from my web server. The authentication details are right and they work on another server I have (login, pwd, ports etc and gmail acct set up for SSL connections on 465), but it's failing on my new server. FIREWALL: I allow related/established, port 80 and a port for SSH on INPUT, then this on OUTPUT: 7906 474K DROP tcp -- any any anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:smtp 0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- any any localhost.localdomain yw-in-f109.1e100.net tcp dpt:submission 0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- any any localhost.localdomain gx-in-f109.1e100.net tcp dpt:ssmtp 0 0 DROP tcp -- any any anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:submission 9 540 DROP tcp -- any any anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssmtp This output chain works on my other server and disabling it doesn't get mail delivered either. WEB SERVER: Varnish (80) Nginx (8088) Drupal 7 PHP5-FPM APC MySQL All works beautifully, except for outgoing email. What else could it be? I understand phpmailer does NOT require a local MTA or procmail (this is sort of the point - I don't want the security or admin overhead of a full blown MTA on my web server). Am I wrong? Do I need an MTA as well? What local ports and programs are used to authenticate over SSL and route mail using phpmailer? Any ideas at all greatly appreciated - wasted a day on this nonsense already!

• Linux can dual display but windows can't?

  I have two monitors, one that is hdmi-to-dvi and the other vga-to-dvi. I have an AMD HD Radeon 6900 series graphics card installed. I got Ubuntu to display dual monitors, but then I restarted for an update and then Ubuntu wouldn't even boot in recovery mode, it just kept cycling forever...displaying something about "timeout: killing [filepath] [hexadecimal]. So I tried booting into windows (7-professional) and it crashed and displayed this after rebooting: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT-IN-NONPAGED-AREA. I went into Bios and reverted to the system defaults and ran system restore and it booted ok, but the dvi-to-dvi monitor would not display. I made sure my drivers were updated and catalyst was updated. Also through research discovered only one is for vga and the other is digital only, so I put the vga-to-dvi in the vga slot and so on. Neither windows or catalyst will detect the dvi-to-dvi montior. Any suggestions? Thanks. EDIT: Found out that booting into Ubuntu with only one monitor (using either monitor with either cable) worked perfectly fine. I could then add another monitor and it displays ok. However, it will, out of the blue, suddenly distort the display. At first I thought the computer crashed, but it is something with the video output from the GPU to the monitor because I pushed the power button and it would refresh every 5secs or so and I could see the "Ubuntu will power down in X seconds", even though it was horribly distorted. Any ideas what's causing this?

• SMTP Server setting on Windows 2008 R2

  I am very very new to this and just trying to configure SMTP virtual server. I have followed a few threads to get it all running, but the mails are not being delivered. What I have done so far - 1) Install SMTP server. 2) SMTP server Properties General Tab - IP address is set to 'All Unassigned'. Access Tab - Authentication is anonymous access. Everything else is left to Default settings. Delivery Tab - Outbound security is anonymous access. In Advance section, entered the domain name in the FQDN field, and localhost in Smart host field. 3) Created an Inbound Rule for SMTP service to allow connections to Port 25. When I try to telnet, everything works up until the point the mail has to be send. Now, the sender's domain is different to the receiver's domain. Not sure if settings have to be changed to allow that? I had set the Relay restrictions on SMTP server, but because I couldn't send the mails, I thought I might as well make it work without the relay first. The error I see while sending the mail is 451 Timeout waiting for client input. I used to get some other error before when I had Relay restrictions on. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks.

  Hi all, The root cause of my problem is not known to me, whatever it is, I experience frequent DNS failures. When it happens I cannot browse to my Gmail inbox. I use two DNS settings. One is the public DNS server offered by OpenDNS, and the other is Google's free DNS server. When this happens I switch from the active setting to the other one and the problem goes away. But there is a side effect to this. When browsing to Gmail fails to load, after switching the DNS I receive an error saying the security certificate the site uses is only valid for OpenDNS. This my wild guess at what is going on: OpenDNS fails to resolve mail.google.com to its IP, My ISP sends me a page showing search results for 'mail.google.com' Since I have received some sort of page instead of a timeout, the browser, mistakenly, binds the certificate it has cached for 'mail.google.com' to the new domain. This search page is not served by https so not exception is thrown by the wrong binding After switching the DNS, the domain is correctly resolved to Gmail server's IP and since his is on https the handshake is triggered. Now, because of the wrong binding, which passed quietly as no handshake was involved, I receive the error saying the certificate used by 'mail.google.com' is only good for openDNS I don't know much about DNS, less about https and the process of establishing a secure connection. How correct is my explanation? How can I delete the wrong association and/or the certificate? Thanks for listening. P. S. The problem goes away by itself, but sometimes it takes several hours before Gmail works again.

• Slow network interaction between 2 kvm host machines

  We have 2 physical machines, Host1 is a CentOS 6.4 kvm host and hosts ~7 kvm VMs all running Ubuntu 12.04 - all of this runs perfectly. Recently we've added a 2nd host system, host2, again a CentOS 6.4 kvm host with a view to running another couple of VMs and providing some failover against host1 should it be required. Both physical machines reside in the same cabinet in our DC, and are on the same subnet - let's say host1: 1.1.1.64 and host2: 1.1.1.81. Both have their gateway set to the DC gateway of 1.1.1.254 with no hardware firewall in between. On each machine, I have 4 NICs that are bonded together to form a single interface, which is then bridged to allow the VMs to access the network. All of the VMs are online, and all of them can successfully ssh into the hosts without any delay. Both systems can access the internet fine, and I can ssh into both systems from home without any issues. However, there is a real delay when attempting to ssh from host1 to host2 (or vice versa) and this obviously means that any action required on host2, that is controlled by host1 either takes forever or results in failure due to timeout. In the interest of keeping this post short, I've put my ifcfg files into a pastie: http://pastie.org/8081648 I've tried both adding a firewall rule in each machine for the other, and also disabling the firewall entirely, so that can't be the issue. I've tried troubleshooting this myself but can't seem to get to the bottom of it. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

  We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output.   I'm setting up a new dev Macbook Pro, and trying to replace bash with zsh. I installed zsh and can run it to change shell in a session. When I use sudo chsh -s /bin/zsh username I get the error message: chsh: Operation was denied because the current credentials do not have the appropriate privileges. Operation was denied because the current credentials do not have the appropriate privileges. AFAIK I have admin privileges on the machine. What could be causing this?

  I have a couple of Dell R610/R710 servers loaded with iDrac6 system management boards. I figured out how to log into the SM CLP with ssh. • Troubleshooting Windows Authentication problems (no challenge) in IIS 7.5?

  I know that there are thousands of reports of people having trouble getting Integrated Windows Authentication to work with IIS, but they all seem to lead to web pages that don't apply or solutions that I've already tried. I've deployed dozens of sites like this before, so either there's something bizarre going on with the server/configuration, or I've been looking at this too long and not seeing the obvious. Simply put, everything works perfectly on my local machine, but falls apart on the production server, which as far as I can tell has the exact same configuration. On the local machine: The machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, IIS 7.5. The site has been tested successfully, using both IIS and the VS Web Development Server. The IIS site config has all authentication methods disabled except Windows Authentication. The local machine is not on any domain. The Providers set up are Negotiate and NTLM (not Negotiate:Kerberos). Extended Protection is Off. All browsers tested (IE, Firefox, Chrome) show the challenge prompt and allow me to log in to the localhost domain with my (local) Windows account. All browsers tested also work using an opaque local IP address - so the browsers themselves don't seem to care whether the site appears "local" or "remote". I've added a display line to the web page which shows the currently-logged-in user and it shows exactly what I would expect (whichever local user I logged in with). On the remote machine: The server is running Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS 7.5. Loading the web page results in an immediate 401.2 error: You are not authorized to view this page due to invalid authentication headers. No challenge prompt ever appears. The IIS site config has all authentication methods disabled except Windows Authentication. The remote machine is not on any domain. The Providers set up are Negotiate and NTLM (not Negotiate:Kerberos). Extended Protection is Off. On the remote machine (remote desktop session), the same error appears in Internet Explorer regardless of whether the domain is localhost or the external IP address. If I try to view the remote web site from my local machine, the error is still 401, but a slightly different 401. No subcode, with the text: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. The Windows Authentication IIS role feature is installed. The WindowsAuthentication Module is added (at the Server level). The exact same error occurs if I turn off Windows Authentication and enable Basic Authentication. The site does load if I turn off Windows Authentication and enable Anonymous (obviously). I've already followed all of the troubleshooting steps on Microsoft Support: Troubleshooting HTTP 401 errors in IIS I've already tried the workaround shown on another Microsoft support page (supposedly to force NTLM as the only method). Last but not least, I tried turning on FREB for 401.2 errors and the results don't seem to tell me anything useful, all I see is the following warning: MODULE_SET_RESPONSE_ERROR_STATUS ModuleName IIS Web Core Notification 2 HttpStatus 401 HttpReason Unauthorized HttpSubStatus 2 ErrorCode 2147942405 ConfigExceptionInfo Notification AUTHENTICATE_REQUEST ErrorCode Access is denied. (0x80070005) ...this seems to just be telling me what I already know (that it's simply rejecting the request instead of negotiating the credentials). The trace does indicate that the WindowsAuthentication module is correctly loaded because there is a NOTIFY_MODULE_START line with ModuleName = WindowsAuthentication (and various other ASP.NET follow-up events - [un]fortunately, no interesting errors or warnings here). Can anyone tell me what I might be missing here? Quick Update: I'm a little uncomfortable sending a whole Wireshark dump as it would reveal IPs, URLs and other stuff, but I did a side-by-side comparison of the HTTP responses from localhost and the remote server in Fiddler, and it seems fairly self-evident what the problem is: Localhost: HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized Cache-Control: private Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate WWW-Authenticate: NTLM X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Sat, 17 Dec 2011 23:42:34 GMT Content-Length: 6399 Proxy-Support: Session-Based-Authentication Remote: HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized Content-Type: text/html Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Sat, 17 Dec 2011 23:43:13 GMT Content-Length: 1293 Aside from a few seemingly-inconsequential differences like cache-control, the main difference is that the remote server is not sending the WWW-Authenticate headers back to the client. So, I guess that narrows the question down to: Why is IIS not sending WWW-Authenticate headers when Windows Authentication appears to be installed, loaded, and exclusively enabled?

  Hi We use Kentico CMS and I've exchanged emails with them about a web garden deployment. We have a single site running on a server with 8 cpu cores. In line with Kentico's advice, we have not altered the application pool web garden setting from the default i.e. it is set to a maximum number of worker processes of 1. Our experience is that the site only uses one of the cpu cores - the others are idling. When I emailed them about this, their response was that the OS/IIS would handle this and use other cores as necessary even though the application pool only has a single worker process. Now, I've a lot of respect for the guys at Kentico, but this doesn't seem right to me? Surely, if we want to use all cores, we need to permit eight worker processes (and implement session state storage in SQL server)? Many thanks Tony

• Remote Desktop fails without error message

  Hi, After rebooting my server Windows 2008 R2 server, I can't log into the remote desktop anymore. When I try to connect, the remote desktop zooms through different status messages, the last of them being "Configuring remote session" and then reverts to the initial Connection dialog again without giving me any error message. The server is seems to be up, since it's still deliverying web pages. Also, it does seem to be accepting my credentials. Is there any way to see why the connection fails? I've browsed through my system's even logs, but could not find anything related to remote desktop. Perhaps there's some hidden troubleshooting mode? Thanks, Adrian Edit: In the meantime the server has come back online. I'm not sure if it did so on it's own or if tech support did because I have not heard from them so far, but the problem is solved for the moment. It's a bit disappointing not to know the cause of thep problem though.
