  hi people i hope you can help a little bit , i appreciate your time look: i have a this desktop i7 2600, 8gb ram ddr3, board intel dh61ww, Geforce Nvidia GT520-cn 2Gb ddr3, i just install ubuntu 64bits 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-23-generic , i want to setup two monitors samsung led 22" and get start mi video card 1) i download and installed nvidia driver 295.59 and also try with 302.17 to apt-update and upgrade, apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r), apt-get remove --purge nvidia*, apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf blacklist vga16fb blacklist nouveau blacklist rivafb blacklist nvidiafb blacklist rivatv sh NVIDIA.run, sudo service lightdm start, reboot, nvidia-xorgconf 2)after reboot i get 800x600 and nvidia-settings say this. You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.   Hi, I have installed lucid on my Lenevo Laptop (Y 410 series , x86 platoform) and it is working fine. Now I have compiled kernel 2.6.37 from the downloaded from the kernel tree. I followed usual procedure of compileing kernel (make menuconfig,make. make modules etc). Then I created the initrd image using mkinitramfs and updated my grub using upadate grub command. Update-grub detects the initrd image of the compiled kernel. However when I boot from this kernel it gives me following error: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) -Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! root=UUID=/... does not exist and then it falls onto initramfs prompt. I have tried following solutions discussed in different ubuntu forums: 1. disable uuid and point root=/dev/sda8 (sda8 is where my kernele image resides (both default kernel and compiled one) from /etc/default/grub 2. compile kernel using CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y suggested here Still I am unable to boot from the compile kernel. Could someone please suggest me the solution ?

  I'm running the Xubuntu 12.10 on a Lenovo T520 laptop. If I plug a FAT formatted usb stick, it's mounted automatically, but if I plug in a NTFS formatted one, I have to mount it manually. How to make NTFS usb sticks to mount automatically when plugged? • Can't start system due to mdadm failing

  I used to have a 5-disk RAID5 partition, all working very well. I have then decided to add 3 more disks on it, totaling 8 equal disks. I've opened Webmin and just asked to add the disks. Then I've realized the three disks had NTFS partitions, wich mdadm didn't complain, so I tried to stop the growing to remove the Windows partitions. I've tried to remove a disk using the same Webmin, but (as you might guess and call me fool...), the system became unstable. By restarting the system, I've started receiving these messages: "udev[126]: timeout: killing '/sbin/mdadm --incremental /dev/sdh1' [311]" "udev[124]: timeout: killing '/sbin/mdadm --detail --export /dev/md0' [316]" I've formated the system disk, hoping to get a system up and running. I did that with all RAID disks disconected, so everything was fine. I then reconnected the disks, wich was also ok. And finally installed mdadm using apt-get. By reboot, the system has found the mdadm intention of growing the system, so the same messages appear again. I other words: I can't even reach a command prompt to do something. Any ideas of what to do? I believe I could turn off the system, disconnect the disks and look for the mdadm.conf file. Would that be a good idead? I'm no Linux expert, so I'm really lost here.

• after BIOS splash, will not boot -- asks me to select an OS, but it just reboots

  I'm running Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit. Everything has been working for several weeks. Yesterday, when I tried to boot up my computer, after the BIOS screen flashes I reach a screen with a black background that reads at the top: GNU GRUB version1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Then there is a box in which I can select from the following lines: Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) -- recovery mode Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) At the bottom it reads: Use the ? and ? keys to select which entry is highlighed. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. I have no idea why it started doing this and, worse, I have no idea how to get out of here. No matter which option I select, I can't get it to boot the OS. If I select either of the first two, it reboots to splash the BIOS and then I'm right back where I started. If I choose "Previous Linux versions" I get essentially the same screen with only two choices (which are the same as the first two choices listed above, Linux 13 MATE and the recovery mode). Again, choosing either one of those results in a reboot. If I try to run either of the memtest options, it reads: error: unknown command 'linux16', Press any key to continue... • "Unmet Dependencies" problem when trying apt-get install

  Anytime I try to install python packages using the command: sudo apt-get install python-package I get the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: linux-headers-generic : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-36-generic but it is not going to be installed linux-headers-generic-pae : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-36-generic-pae but it is not going to be installed linux-image-generic : Depends: linux-image-3.2.0-36-generic but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). This seems to have started when these same three packages showed up in Ubuntu's Update Manager and kicked an error when I tried to install them there. As I said, my machine normally dynamically allocates additional memory from the host machine, so I don't see why there would be memory restrictions at all...

• btrfs and missing free space

  I converted my ext4 partition to btrfs and deleted the save subvolume after doing so. Then I enabled the compression (lzo) of the filessystem in the fstab file and everything is correct so far. Then I forced the compression of all files using the defragmentation command with the parameter -c that the new compression is applied to all files. While doing so, I noticed that my ssd got completly filled up - before I had 6gigs of free space. No I got nothing left. easteregg@x201s:~$ btrfs fi df / Data: total=50.00GB, used=49.17GB System: total=32.00MB, used=4.00KB Metadata: total=24.50GB, used=9.86GB and easteregg@x201s:~$ df -ha Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 75G 60G 852M 99% / So now. How can I regain my free space. I expected to gain more space because of the lzo compression. And now! The fs is correctly mounted. easteregg@x201s:~$ mount /dev/sda1 on / type btrfs (rw,noatime,ssd,compress=lzo) Any ideas how to fix this issue?

• how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Can't mount my USB Drive

  ~> sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/Disk Did not find any restart pages in $LogFile and it was not empty. The file system wasn't safely closed on Windows. Fixing. I have a USB Hard Disk and Windows can't detect it. So I tried to open it up on Ubuntu using gparted. Gparted detects the NTFS partition, so everything seems to be fine (note, though, that the total size of the files in this disk is over 1 TB). I tried to mount it using: sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/Disk But I got: Did not find any restart pages in $LogFile and it was not empty. The file system wasn't safely closed on Windows. Fixing. Then, the process just sits there blinking. Any ideas on how to fix it? It's taking forever ( 10 minutes), should I wait or cancel it and do something else? Thank you in advance.

• How would I broadcast a subdomain/virtual name on a local server with people connected to the same network

  I have a server connected to the router which has ubuntu 12.04. It is has apache/mysql/php all installed ready to go. the folder structure is like this: /var/www -- this isnt the root -/libs -/logs -/public - this is the root -/vhosts - all subdomains go here I have a folder in vhosts named mysite. I went into /etc/apache2/sites-available and created a file and here are the contents - (vhost file). and I also added an entry in /etc/hosts file containing: 127.0.1.1 mysite.dev and I also did sudo a2ensite mysite i tried accessing the site from a computer via mysite.dev and our public ip into the server but i was not able to view it. the public directory in the structure above does display on all computers when i try our public ip. but for anything added in vhosts the site wont show. there is no domain attached its just our ip. I tried changing the port from 80 to say 9999 in the mysite file in sites-available and tried myip:9999 but that didnt work either. what am I doing wrong? edit: i forgot to mention that the server is dmzed on the router.

  I've been struggling with this one for a few days now. I've got a test app set up to connect to LinkedIn via OAuth. I want to be able to update a user's status, but at the moment I'm unable to interact with LinkedIn's API at all. • Help with SVN+SSH permissions with CentOS/WHM setup

  Hi Folks, I'll try my best to explain how I'm trying to set up this system. Imagine a production server running WHM with various sites. We'll call these sites... site1, site2, site2 Now, with the WHM setup, each site has a user/group defined for them, we'll keep these users/groups called site1,site2 for simplicity reasons. Now, updating these sites is accomplished using SVN, and through the use of a post commit script to auto update these sites (With .svn blocked through the apache configuration). There are two regular maintainers of these sites, we'll call them Joe and Bob. Joe and Bob both have commandline access to the server through thier respective limited accounts. So I've done the easy bit, managed to get SVN working with these "maintainers" so that when an SVN commit occurs, the changes are checked out and go live perfectly. Here's the cavet, and ultimately my problem. User permissions. Through my testing of this setup, I've only managed to get it working by giving what is being updated permissions of 777, so that Joe and Bob can both read and write access to webfront directories for each of the sites. So, an example of how it's set up now: Joe and Bob both belong to a group called "Dev". I have the master /svn folders set up for both read and write access to this group, and it works great. Post commit triggers, updates the site, and then sets 777 on each file within the webfront. I then changed this to try and factor in group permission updates, instead of straight 777. Each folder in /home/site1/public_html intially gets given a chmod of 664, and each folder 775 Which looks a little something like this drwxrwxr-x . drwxrwxr-x .. drwxrwxr-x site1 site1 my_test_folder -rw-rw-r-- site1 site1 my_test_file So site1 is sthe owner and group owner of those files and folders. So I then added site1 to Joe and Bobs secondary groups so that the SVN update will correctly allow access to these files. Herein lies the problem now. When I wish to add a file or folder to /home/site1, say Bobs_file, it then looks like this drwxrwxr-x . drwxrwxr-x .. drwxr-xr-x Bob dev bobs_folder drwxrwxr-x site1 site1 my_test_folder -rw-rw-r-- Bob dev bobs_file -rw-rw-r-- site1 site1 my_test_file How can I get it so that with the set of user permissions Bob has available, to change the owner and group owner of that file to reflect "site1" "site1". As Bob belongs to Dev I can set the permissions correctly with CHMOd, but It appears CHGRP is throwing back operation errors. Now this was long winded enough to give an overview of exactly what I'm trying to accomplish, just incase I'm going about this arse-over-tit and there's a far easier solution. Here's my goals 2 people to update multiple user accounts specified given the structure of WHM Trying to maintain master user/group permissions of file and folders to the original user account, and not the account of the updatee. I like the security of SVN+SSH over just SVN. Don't want to run all this over root. I hope this made sense, and thanks in advance :)

• Why does Gnumake from parent directory behave differently?

  I am stumped as to why when I do a gnumake from the parent directory it behaves incorrectly, whereas, if I cd to the subdirectory and do gnumake it works correctly. The file names are R303717COMP_148A2075_20100520.txt (the middle section is unique per file).
