• creating a google wave clone using php/mysql/jquery

  seasons greetings to all. i have a question that has been rather bugging me as of late. does anyone know how one can create a google wave clone using php/mysql/jquery as primary points of development. any ideas on how this might be possible and recommend any starting points? i have some time off work and it would be an interesting project to undertake as i want to use it in an e-learning framework next year. i will be testing the product on a XAMPP local server. i understand some of the technologies that google wave using but i am rather curious as to how these can be developed to a decent standard using php/mysql/jquery (i mention these three because i am quite adept at them). any links to resources best suited to an intermediate programmer would be appreciated. many thanks and God bless. so far i have this: http://konrness.com/javascript/google-wave-style-scroll-bar-jquery-plugin/

  Had a very bizarre situation yesterday where a local machine account couldn’t access SQL Server and was getting Login failed for user <user>. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <client ip>] along with Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. • Setup site folders on Apache and PHP [closed]

  I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle?

• How do I add a custom launcher?

  I started by searching guides. I found this guide but neither of the main methods works anymore in 11.10. The first solution, I have created the desktop file, however the file location given as .gconf-> desktop-> unity-> launcher -> favourites no longer exists. I can get to /home/sayth/.gconf/desktop but there is no longer a unity folder. The second solution described right-clicking the desktop and creating a launcher. Right-clicking the desktop no longer produces a "create a launcher" option. I manually installed geany 0.21 as the one in the repo's is outdated. It's installed and working correctly, and is executing from /usr/local/bin/geany. How can I add it to the launcher?

• Suspend after delay via SSH

  I know how to suspend after a delay by using: echo 'pmi action suspend' | at now + 1 minutes However, that only seems to work as long as I keep the console window open. Am I correct in assuming that the at commands are cleared when I close the console? This is an issue as I want to be able to log in to my computer via SSH, send the suspend command, then log out before it happens. Suspending immediately tends to freeze my local console window, which is inconvenient. Is there a way to send a delayed suspend command without it being cleared when I log out?

• Use a proxy which connects to the school proxy

  How to get my computer use a proxy ON my computer, which connects to the school proxy ? The reason I ask this, is because I need all programs on my computer, absolutely the whole system to go through the network, without having to use proxy authentication? Then I was thinking of a possibility to use a local proxy without authentication, to connect to the school proxy (with all authentication details), and then be able to make the system go through it? Is that possible? I've heard some stories about using IP-tables to make a transparent proxy, but I have no idea how to do that, as i am pretty new at all this. So, details, explanations and suggestions about this are very welcome! If you need more details, I'll provide them!

• Is it bad to have an "Obsessive Refactoring Disorder"?

  I was reading this question and realized that could almost be me. I am fairly OCD about refactoring someone else's code when I see that I can improve it. For example, if the code contains duplicate methods to do the same thing with nothing more than a single parameter changing, I feel I have to remove all the copy/paste methods and replace it with one generic one. Is this bad? Should I try and stop? I try not to refactor unless I can actually make improvements to the code performance or readability, or if the person who did the code isn't following our standard naming conventions (I hate expecting a variable to be local because of the naming standard, only to discover it is a global variable which has been incorrectly named)

• Phone crash when try to use vibration on Android

  Im developing an app that when you click a button the phone has to vibrate, the issue is that the phone just chashes. Saing that I need permitions to vibrate. I've already set this permition in the build.setting (android manifiest). • Apache on Mac Mavericks issue [migrated]

  Trying to run Apache so that I can create a testing server on my mac.When I start apache it starts, but it doesn't run (no connection to local host. Ill upload the unix,you'll see that after starting there is no processes, and I did a check to show you what was running on my port 80... I don't entirely know that means. • Under an Xampp install, I modify the apache httpd-vhosts.conf file and then my Apache server will not start

  I have read all the articles but still must be doing something wrong... I modified the httpd-vhosts.conf file to access the project I am working on... I have tried many different configurations and none work. My apache service will not start (I am on Windows 7)... any ideas would be helpful - here is the code I added to the conf file: DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/htdocs" ServerName localhost DocumentRoot C:/xampp/htdocs/socengv1" ServerName socengv1.local I have also tried this with NameVirtualHost *:80 command with no difference to note.

• How to Play PC Games on Your TV

  No need to wait for Valve’s Steam Machines — connect your Windows gaming PC to your TV and use powerful PC graphics in the living room today. It’s easy — you don’t need any unusual hardware or special software. This is ideal if you’re already a PC gamer who wants to play your games on a larger screen. It’s also convenient if you want to play multiplayer PC games with controllers in your living rom. HDMI Cables and Controllers You’ll need an HDMI cable to connect your PC to your television. This requires a TV with HDMI-in, a PC with HDMI-out, and an HDMI cable. Modern TVs and PCs have had HDMI built in for years, so you should already be good to go. If you don’t have a spare HDMI cable lying around, you may have to buy one or repurpose one of your existing HDMI cables. Just don’t buy the expensive HDMI cables — even a cheap HDMI cable will work just as well as a more expensive one. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI-out port on your PC and one end into the HDMI-In port on your TV. Switch your TV’s input to the appropriate HDMI port and you’ll see your PC’s desktop appear on your TV.  Your TV becomes just another external monitor. If you have your TV and PC far away from each other in different rooms, this won’t work. If you have a reasonably powerful laptop, you can just plug that into your TV — or you can unplug your desktop PC and hook it up next to your TV. Now you’ll just need an input device. You probably don’t want to sit directly in front of your TV with a wired keyboard and mouse! A wireless keyboard and wireless mouse can be convenient and may be ideal for some games. However, you’ll probably want a game controller like console players use. Better yet, get multiple game controllers so you can play local-multiplayer PC games with other people. The Xbox 360 controller is the ideal controller for PC gaming. Windows supports these controllers natively, and many PC games are designed specifically for these controllers. Note that Xbox One controllers aren’t yet supported on Windows because Microsoft hasn’t released drivers for them. Yes, you could use a third-party controller or go through the process of pairing a PlayStation controller with your PC using unofficial tools, but it’s better to get an Xbox 360 controller. Just plug one or more Xbox controllers into your PC’s USB ports and they’ll work without any setup required. While many PC games to support controllers, bear in mind that some games require a keyboard and mouse. A TV-Optimized Interface Use Steam’s Big Picture interface to more easily browse and launch games. This interface was designed for using on a television with controllers and even has an integrated web browser you can use with your controller. It will be used on the Valve’s Steam Machine consoles as the default TV interface. You can use a mouse with it too, of course. There’s also nothing stopping you from just using your Windows desktop with a mouse and keyboard — aside from how inconvenient it will be. To launch Big Picture Mode, open Steam and click the Big Picture button at the top-right corner of your screen. You can also press the glowing Xbox logo button in the middle of an Xbox 360 Controller to launch the Big Picture interface if Steam is open. Another Option: In-Home Streaming If you want to leave your PC in one room of your home and play PC games on a TV in a different room, you can consider using local streaming to stream games over your home network from your gaming PC to your television. Bear in mind that the game won’t be as smooth and responsive as it would if you were sitting in front of your PC. You’ll also need a modern router with fast wireless network speeds to keep up with the game streaming. Steam’s built-in In-Home Streaming feature is now available to everyone. You could plug a laptop with less-powerful graphics hardware into your TV and use it to stream games from your powerful desktop gaming rig. You could also use an older desktop PC you have lying around. To stream a game, log into Steam on your gaming PC and log into Steam with the same account on another computer on your home network. You’ll be able to view the library of installed games on your other PC and start streaming them. NVIDIA also has their own GameStream solution that allows you to stream games from a PC with powerful NVIDIA graphics hardware. However, you’ll need an NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console to do this. At the moment, NVIDIA’s game streaming solution can only stream to the NVIDIA Shield. However, the NVIDIA Shield device can be connected to your TV so you can play that streaming game on your TV. Valve’s Steam Machines are supposed to bring PC gaming to the living room and they’ll do it using HDMI cables, a custom Steam controller, the Big Picture interface, and in-home streaming for compatibility with Windows games. You can do all of this yourself today — you’ll just need an Xbox 360 controller instead of the not-yet-released Steam controller.   It’s been half a year since my last post.  My how time flies.  My new years resolution is to post more frequently.  After a short stint at a local company, which shall remain nameless, I’m back at Veracity.  Overall, Veracity Solutions is one of the best companies I’ve worked for, and I’m relieved to be back. So, this year, I’m going to do the following on my blog: Finish the Agile posts I started (IN MAY!!!). Blog about some code for a logging helper to make debug logging easier. Blog some resharper snippets to help with logging. Blog a Unity Container helper to allow you to specify dependency mappings with attributes on interfaces. If I can accomplish all of those, I’ll have done well this year, and since I’ve put this out to the public, I’m accountable for it, right? Technorati Tags: Agile,logging

• #iPad at One Week: A Great Device Made with a Heavy Hand

  I have now had my iPad for a little over a week. In that time, Apple introduced the world to its iPhone OS 4 (and the SDK agreement’s draconian new section 3.3.1), HP introduced is Slate, and Microsoft got ready to launch Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0. And through it all I have used my iPad. I've used it for email, calendar, controlling my Sonos, and writing an essay. I've used it for getting on TripIt and Twitter, and surfing the Web. I've used it for online banking, and online ordering and delivery of food. And the verdict? Honestly? I think it's a great device and I thoroughly enjoy using it. The screen is bright and vibrant. I am surprisingly fast and accurate when I type on it. The touch screen's responsiveness is nearly flawless. The software, including a number of third party applications, include pleasing animations and use of color that make it fun to get work done. And speaking of work, the Exchange integration is, dare I say it, robust. Not as full-featured as on a PC or Windows Mobile device, but still offering core functionality and, so far at least, without bugs. The UI is intuitive, not just to me, but also to my 5 1/2 year old, and also to my nearly-3-year-old son. They picked it up and, with just just a few pointers from me, they almost immediately knew what to do, whether they were looking at photos (and swiping/flicking along as they did so), using a drawing program, playing a game, or watching YouTube videos. The younger of the two of them even tried to get up on a chair and grab the thing today. He dropped it, from about 4 feet off the ground. And it's still fine. (Meanwhile, I'll be keeping it on a higher shelf.) I cannot fully describe yet what makes this form factor and this product so appealing. Maybe it's that it's an always-on device. Maybe it's just being able to hold such a nice, relatively large display so close. Maybe it's the design sensibility, that seems to pervade throughout the app ecosystem. Or maybe it's that one's fingers, and not pens or mice, are the software's preferred input device. Whatever the attraction, it's strong. And no matter how much I tend to root for Microsoft and against Apple, Cupertino has, in my mind, scored big, Can Microsoft compete? Yes, but not with the Windows 7 standard UI (nor with individual OEMs’ own UIs on top). I hope Microsoft builds a variant of the Windows Phone 7 specifically for tablet devices. And I hope they make it clear that all developers, and programming languages, are welcome to the platform. Once that’s established, the OEMs have to build great hardware with fast, responsive touch screens, under Microsoft's watchful eye. That may be the hardest part of getting this right. No matter what, Microsoft's got a fight on its hands. I don't know if it can count on winning that fight, either. But Silverlight and Live Tiles could certainly help. And so can treating developers like adults.  Apple seems intent on treating their devs like kids, and then giving the kids a curfew.  For that, dev-friendly Microsoft may one day give thanks.

• How do I execute a file from a FAT USB drive?

  I'm trying to install a portable app onto my USB drive such that it is compatible with both Ubuntu and Windows (specifically, a program called eToys). Support is already built into the app for both operating systems - there's etoys.sh for Ubuntu and etoys.exe for Windows. I decided to install onto a FAT drive since that can be read from both systems. This works fine for Windows, but for some reason I cannot execute etoys.sh on Ubuntu. The problem is not with the file - when the whole folder is copied to the local hard drive, the app works great in Ubuntu. But when I try to execute it from the USB, it opens the file in a text editor. I then tried running it from a terminal, but I got the message "Permission denied." I've had the same problem with other executables as well. Is there an easy way to execute things from a USB stick? Thanks! -- Derek

• U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

  Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

• Annual SQL Server conference in Poland - SQLDay 2014

  We had a great 3-days conference this year in Poland. The SQLDay (7th edition) is an annual community conference. We started in 2008 as a part of C2C (community to communities) conference and after that, from 2009 the SQLDay is the independent event dedicated to the SQL Server specialists. This year we had almost 300 people and speakers like Bob Ward, Klaus Aschenbrenner and Alberto Ferrari. • Apache Rewrites not working due to Akamai

  I have a website which is setup with akamai. My domain and subdomains are mapped onto an Akamai IP. I have written an Apache rewrite which does an internal URL X to another internal URL Y. This rewrite works fine as long as I am testing in my local setup or for those subdomains which are not mapped onto Akamai but directly onto my Public IP. My suspicion is that while rewriting the request apache is not able to resolve the IP of the app server correctly. When I add entries to my /etc/hosts file pointing the domain/subdomain to my internal IP the rewrites work. Now, I have a huge list of subdomains and it can grow as well. Is there another way to fix this problem without having to make entries in the /etc/hosts file ? I would much appreciate your thoughts.

• Missed environment variables in Eclipse Juno

  I recently moved from Eclipse Indigo to Juno. I installed the IDE in my Ubuntu 12.04 by downloading the archive from here. Then I created an entry in the unity launcher for Juno as I done before for Indigo. Here is what I wrote in ~/.local/share/applications/eclipse-juno.desktop: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Eclipse Juno Comment=Eclipse Integrated Developmentm Environment Icon=~/.eclipse-juno/icon.xpm Exec=~/.eclipse-juno/eclipse -vmargs -Duser.name="my name" Terminal=false Categories=Development;IDE;Java; When I run eclipse from the unity launcher, eclipse does not see environment variables that I set in ~/.bascrc. Instead, if I run eclipse from shell, it can see all the env variables. How can I fix the problem? Thanks a lot.

In my local business full page, I have a carousel with several images, so what I did is that on the container of this carousel i have written the following: "itemprop='photos' itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageObject"", i.e. <div class="tourism-product-media-gallery" itemprop='photos' itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageObject"> and then on each and every image i have written the following: "itemprop="contentURL"", i.e. <img src="@mediaItem.NormalImage" alt="@mediaItemCaption" itemprop="contentURL"/> But i am not convinced that this is the way it should be.
